days, we'll look back at his life and legy with his co-star henry winkler "today," life and legy with his co-star henry winkler "today," wednesday, october 20, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning, welcome to "today." we allemember anita hill's testimony at the senate confirmation hearing in 1991. that w explosive and it triggered a national debate. >> anita hill claimed that thomas made inappropriate sexual comments to her when she served as his aid. now in an unusual twist, 19 years later t supreme court justice's wife virginia has left hill a voicemail asking her to apologize for what she said. now she's released a statement saying she stands by her testimony. we're going to tell you what else he had to say. also ahead thi morning, a case in canada that's making headlines all around the world. the commander of that country's largest air force base caught leading a chilling double life has now admitted to a string of brutal murders, sexual assaults and break ins and prosecutors say he videotaped his crimes. and a new warning on potential dangers of -- let's begin with a request for an apology by anita hill. >> reporter:early two decades after one of the most dramatic supreme court confirmations in american history. clarence thomas's wife is now trying to get her husband's accuser to apologize for those allegations sexua harassment. anita hill is having none of it. >> members of the committee, my name is anita f. hill. >> reporter: almost 20 years later, a bizarre reopening of hill's comments clash. it began over the weekend, when clarence thomas's wife virginia a political activist left a message on the office voicemail of anita hill. the message said i would love you to consider an apology sometimend some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. so give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. i did place a call to ms. hill at her office, extending an olive branch to her after all these years. in hopes that we could ultimately get passed what happened so long ago. anita hill turns the message over to campus police. they called in the fbi. hill tells nbc news, i certainly thought the call was inappropriate. i have no intention of apologizing because i testified truthfully about my experience and i stand that testimony. virginia thomas known as ginnie is active in tea party politics and founded liberty central, a nonprofit organization which promotes education, civil discourse and activism, focused on protecting core founding principles of the united states. it was 1991 when anita hill testified that thomas made crude sexual comments to her in the workplace. >> he got up from the table on which we were working, went over to his desk to get the cokes. looked at the can and ask who has put pubic hair on my coke. >> it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way dane to think for themselves, to have different ideas. >> thomas offered to take a lie detector test. three years ago, hill talked to lester holt about the experience. >> i was portrayed as crazy, i was portrayed as someone with an arkansas ax to grind, i was portrayed as someone who was in love with clarence thomas. >> reporter: now she has reopened one of the most emotionally charged political confrontations in supreme court history. >> andrea mitchell in washington for us on the story. it'sive after the hour, re's ann. what's on the mind of voters with just 13 days to go until the midterm elections? wee going to get some insight into the new nbc news "wall street journal" poll. >> reporter: well, in this year of political frustration, candidates often add to that by ducking questions or sticking to attack lines and we saw more of that in aouple of key debates and voters are telling us where they think the country is going. election say is already here for voters able to cast early ballots in roughly two dozen states. those decisions locked in, while gloomy -- 59% told us the country is on the wro track. when the president took office, 51% said government needed to do more, but today a flip. 50% say government is doing too much and that frustration plays out in key races like florida senate where marco rubio leads. >> from the stimulus package to the threats of tax increases to obama care, everything that has happened over there has made it harder not easier for jobs to be created. >> i think obama care was off the charts, was wrong, it taxed too much. >> reporter: on most issues, democratic congressman kendrick meek disagrees with rubio and cris. >> they're advocating is tax cuts for the superwealthy. >>eporter: turning to a senate fight in illinois. >> there's no debate that there's corruption in illinois. >> reporter: congressma mark firth was a top loan offer when he bank dealt with crime figures. >> well known convicted felons. >> mistakes are made and unfortunately there are people you wish you had never done business with. >> the state treasure you arer called out kirk who exaggerated about parts of his navy duty overseas. kirk claims he came under fire. >> why would you make all this stuff up? were you shot at or not. >> he criticized my navy record when he me -- >> reporter: christine o'donnell is trailing democrat chris coons. >> one of these indefensible separatis is the separation of church and state. >> he went on to state that creationism should not be taught in schools. >> where in the constitution is the separation of church and state? >> reporter: and it gets a little bit more complicated because o'donnell, her campaign and other tea party candidates like sharo angle has argued that the specific phrase separation of church and state does not appear in the constitution and the idea as we know it today developed over time. regardless of those nuances, you can hear the reaction from students, many of them were law students in that audience, presenting another political moment for us to keep talking about. > former virginia governor kim kaines the chairman of the democratic national committee. governor kaine, good morning. if 59% of americans are saying that this country is on the wrong track with democrats in charge, what are you going to do over the next 13 days that you haven't done already to convince voters to keep democrats in charge? >> well, it's important for us to continue to talk to democrats and the american public about the achievements of the administration. we are not where we want to be yet, but, ann, after a decade of losing jobs and losing family inme, the american economy is growing again and for nine straight months private sector has added jobs. we see in the nbc "wall street journal" poll among registered voters, we still have a gap to close among likely voters and the president's numbers are also improving and with the president out on the trl, we have a real good case to make. >> look at how the president's been trying to close tha gap, he's been campaigning with college students, he's appeared in mtvown hall and now he's about to appear on the daily show. this has a feeling of sort of a last ditch las minute effort. if young voters were so important during the last election, was it a mistake not to woo them sooner? >> you have an easier time getting a message to young voter, it's pretty simple, you tued out in record numbers in 2008 and we have done the largest expansion of the student loan program in american history without spending an additional penny. an we have don important credit card reform that has helped young voters, so we have their attention, we're reaching out. th >> let's talk about what you're really up against because this swell of enthusiasm around the tea party, karl rove recently said that members of the tea party are amazing, but as an organization it is not sophisticat sophticated. if the tea party is not sophisticated, why is it so difficult for your party, the democratic party to convince voters otherwise? >> i don't think -- i mean we're not trying to convince voters whether or not the tea party is sophisticated or not. >> what i'm trying to ask you is why does the tea party have the democratic party on theropes, if in fact the tea party is not sophisticat sophisticated. >> that's not the way i look at it, ann, when people are hurting it's always going to be tough, american history has shown that. but i'm talking to you from iowa "today," i have been doing even in the congressional district in iowa where the polls have been going in e democratic candidates' favor. we have seen the governor's race here in iowa go from a double digit race down, our candidate was down to a single digit ce, and all over the country, whether it's pennsylvania, florida, california, colorado, washington state, we're seeing polls in democrats favor. we still have more work to do, but you want to hit election day on an upcycle wch we believe we are. it is not 7:12. >> for more on the mood of voters heading into the midterm election, let's bring in chuck todd. i want to look at the latest poll numbers on president obama, 49% of people disapprove of the job he's doing, that's about the same as lost month, but i don't see democratic candidates coming up with bumper stickers in the last two days saying our president is no less popular than he was a month ago. >> what you do is you go inside them. what you hea and ann's question to chairman kaine abo young voters, when you break the numbers down, on one hand you look at it and say the president is not doing well and that's why in those areas the swing districts are hurting. the people he's doing the best with arehe people who say they're the least likely to vote, those are young voters, those are african-americans. what you do is dispatch the president in specific areas like they're doing, college campuses. >> how do they approval numbers or disapproval numbers at 49% compare to recent democrats heading into elections. >> they're higher than where clinton was in '94 but don't let that miss that issue, which is among white voters, it actually about the same or lower. what it is is that the president with african-americans and with hispanics does very well, better an either president bush or president clinton. >> when all respondents were ask the question whether they prefer contrac democrats or republicans, 43% said they prefer democrats, 50% say they want republicans. do those questions accurately predict an outcome when people actually go into a voting booth, not when they're faceded with a generic question? i said sure. >> reporter: bosley won the tony in 1960. it was there that he met his first wife, but after 16 years of marriage, she died of a brain tumor. he met his second wife patricia car when she guest starred on "happy days jshlgsz. >> reporr: after happy days, he became the prit and complete with down east acnt, he appeared as sheriff amos tucker on "murder she wrote." and tom bosley was one of those working actors hollywood could always count on. >> i remembered an acting teacher i had in chicago who said to me, you'll make it if you've got the patience to stick with it. because our business is one of staying power. >> reporter: bosley offered this thought about how he would like to be remember. >> as a good father, a good husband, and a damned good grandfather. >> reporter: and one of tv's most famous father figures, still in reruns. for "today," george lewis, nbc news, los angeles. >> awe. i was watching youtube this morning trying to find more information. he said, quote, my wife says my tombstone will say here lies who -- >> what a terrific voice. i go to interview him once and he's such a great man. >> he was the glad bag guy. we'll have more on tom bosley's legacy in our next half hour. heh heh heh h! >> reporter: there's evidence of a 2 1/2 year rampagef break ins, he stole more than 200 pairs of derwear. >> i think "todatoday is nation getting a good dose of reality of just how evil people can be. >> reporter: he posed in girl's underwear, all while still in their bedrooms. many of his victims never even knew he had been there. >> there was a sense of pride in what he was doing, he wanted to keep records so he could relive the moment. >> reporter: williams had risen to be a decorated officer in the canadian air force, even flying the queen of england back in 2005. but his sense of depravity was a dark secret he successfully hid from even his closest coeagues. >> he wasn't the type of perso who gave -- >> there's a healthy aspect of even the sickest person who doesn't want to risk rejection by sharing what their most intimate problems are, and in this case it turned murderous. >> reporter: prosecutors hope it will end only if the former concern is locked away for life. >> pat brown is a criminal profiler and author of "the profiler" my life hunting serial killers and psychopaths. good morng to you. you said this guy does not fit the typical profile, why? >> well, he actually -- his personality fits the typical profe of a sexual sadist, so all the things i'm hearing about him, how he conducted his crimes, the photography, all that stuff, that actually does match a sexual sadist, but wh what's terriy unusual is that he had such great status in his life. he had risen so high, because even sexual sadists who are doing better than most serial killers in the sense that serial killers have probls keeping their jobs, their girlfriends dump them and they move from place to place. sexual sadistssually have -- >> they called this guy mr. by the book, he was detailed oriented in his public life and now we know that he kept journals and pictures of the crimes he committed. what does that tell you about the state of this guy's mind? >> he is extremely organized and he loves to have a lot of control. that's his whole thing, total control. and i gue he got to the point where he wanted have total control in a depraved way of individuals so he documented every sgle step that he took. when we go on vacation, we take pictures of the entire vacation, this is a picture of the airpor the hotel, the food, and we have some souvenirs and we relive those moments that we had this great vacation. and he love this is stf, when they took his scrapbook away which they have done now, and when he was in court, he got one last chance to peekwhen they were showing the pictures, he was looking down, but then he looked up to see those so he could see one more te what he had done. >> he had done 80 break ins in two neighborhoods where he live. are you surprised that investigators didn't find him earlier? >> the pulsing takes if you don't stop to talk to ann curry, it takes about 15 seconds from start to finish. and then you can just add, keep pulsing as iadd about a quarter of a cup. of water. you roll this out. >> a lot of times people say don't work it too muchith your hands, is that still the case with this kind of a thing. >> you just cut it into about one by two inch squas. it doesn't matter. you can do it 3 1/2. i don't really bother to cut it with a ruler, but in case you're uneasy about it. >> this is normally made with apples, but you've gotears this morning. >> not normally, it cane pears, it can be quints, it can be apple. i have been making apple pies every single weekend. i have virtually tons of apples on my property. >> i peel and cut into wedges and some dried fig. two tablespoons of lemon juice. a tablespoon of flour. thatlour thickens the juices while it's bake very important to put some flavor like that. and a little bit of nutmeg. >> fresh nutmeg is always best. >> it is. >> sometimes people keep them for two -- >> okay now let's get started, what do we dothen? >> and we'll scrape that off. always scrape. and then you arrange these beautiful, beautiful squares, cut your pastry, all this pastry into squares, chill them, so that they're easy to handle. >> how long do you chill them. >> just until they're hard. >> 15, 20 minutes. >> and make sure nothing's hanging over the edge and then just lay these in little bit of an overlapping -- >> i see, so that it overhangs a little bit. >> you're not building out really well, and you can just cut it into squares like that. >> this looks like when you bake it, it's going to be really pretty. >> and we have egg mixed with a little bit of cream. this will get it browner than if you just did eggs. you can do egg and water. >> so there's like a little tablespoon of eam? >> caller: i recently filed bankruptcy due to job loss and mounting debt and because of this, i also lost my eligibility for my student loan, which will soon compound my financial difficulties as my current loans which are not in default will soon come out of defermentnd i will not be able to affordhese payments. my question is, when will i earn back any eligibility for my student loan. >> i need to ask you if you have federal and private loans or which ones do y have? >> caller: i believe they're all federal. they're all stafford and private loans. >> that's very good ws. because the stafford and perkins loans you actually are still eligible for. with the plus loans, you have to wait until those loans are discharged. bankruptcy, it's really a horrible thing when you have student loan debt because it's not going to get discharged unless you really show undue hardship and it's a very difficult thing to prove. the other thing you should look at is income based replacement plans. try to work out a repayment plan, look at the calculators there and see what you can do. >> now let's go to an e-mail. she writes, i have a 529 for both of my grandchildren, one is for a 15-year-old tenth grer, about $15,000 and the other is for a 6-year-old and h i is approximately $3,500. should i put them in my daughter's name? >> ellen, a fabulous, fabulous grandma. not only because she started the 529, but because she is asking this question, which is very, very important. here's the thing. she doesn't have to put it in anyone else's name. please don't, actually do not. th would be the worst thing you can do. if you put it in the child's name. everything, all of the money in the student's name is going to be considered toward the financial aid package. if it's in the parent of the student, her daughter's name, that will factor into financial aid. the grandparentsassets, all of them are not condered if the financial aid process on the fasfa form. be very careful with the stool. contact the school, contact the financial aid office. be careful when you defer. and wait until the granddaughter is in school. >> i want to get to this nex phone call. alex is calling in from new york. alex, good morning. what's your qution? >> caller: i'm 32 years old and just resigned from my prior company to take a better offer with a startup. my question is how to handle the 401(k) at my prior company gen that i still have about $40,000 in loans left. my main question is whether i should convert that traditional ira to a roth and take the tax hit this year and can that be counted towards my maximum contribution for 2010 or just leave it as it is now? >> this is a hand scb that you can use, what we're encouraging people to do is don't just think about your face. think about your hands. >> hands show age? age spots, that's something that people really get upset about. you use a daily hand cream and you won't get those age spots. >> these have anti-inflammatory properties. anything that causes inflammation in the body puts stress on all your systems including your skin and that will cause you to get more wrinkles. just use more spice i general, especially cinnamon and ginger. >> thank you very much. we're stirring the pot in an italian favorite. bob ehrlich's 24 years in politics. in congress ehrlich voted with george bush 90% of the tim protecting the special intests. as governor, ehrlich cut education, increased college tuition by 40%, and vetoed an increase in the minimum we. and after losing his election, bob ehrlich joined a lobbying firm and got paid $2.5 million to represent casin and wall street banks. bob ehich--24 years of putting the special interests first. this morning in "today's" kitchen, our chef has jus returned from his acclaimed cooking school near verona. and he's going to show us how to make two delicious rizsottrisot. what a great, hearty meal. >> we're going to make two of them. >> a lot of people are afraid because they think it takes too long. >> it takes 20 minutes once the rice goes in. we don't have time to make a complicated dinner. >> that's good to know. >> but you have to have the right kind of rice. i have a few gins in this bowl here. the outside of the kernel is slightly -- these are sauteed onions. the first is mushrooms, we have soaked them in water, and wn they'rereconstituted, they puff up. stir these in, add a little bit of salt, a little bit of pepper. if you had porcini, that would bereat. this is so that it can start soaking up the flavors of the rice and then we start adding liquids. >> so the rice will absorb the flavor of the butter and the mushrooms. and this liquid tt we kept that the mushrooms were soaking in, we put them in a little pot here. and this is the liquid we're going to start using to make a rice. you add just enough to give it sort of a thick, soupy consistency and then you stir. and while you do that one, i'm going to work on this one over here. this is butter nut squash and we would make it with a pumpkin, it's an italian pumpkin. >> that almost sounds like an - >> okay, all right. so here wedd the rice as well. and we stirred it. and here we're going to add some broth, this is just the meat broth. you know the whole thing about stirring risotto, it's not just so that the rice won't stick to the pot. it's because stirring creates friction between the rice kernel. the most importanthing to learn is it's creamy not because of any of the ingredits you put in, and it's not because we're putting in a lot of butter or cream, it's because of the kind of rice you use. so you've got to stir so that that starch dissolves away. and you wait to add more liquid until it's just like that. and then you add just enoh liquid to make it soupy. after you put the mushroom liquid in here, we're going to continue. then you just keep on going for 15, 18inutes. and then, at the end, we're going to add a little bit of butt and cheese. this is a risotto that's finished, it's butter nut squash with a little bit of parsley. and this is the mushroom one. >> we have a hungry crew here. >> okay. and so it's -- i can do that if you want. >> so do you want to do this -- you want to do it when it gets burned at the bottom, you wan to be very careful. >> you just keep stirring. and gets creamy when you add the mushrooms. >> thank y so much. >> still to come, entourage star adrian grenier stops by to talk to hoda and kathie lee. cloudy skies. kind of thick and hazy. 56 degrees the current temperature. chilly though. we'll talk to tom shortly about the weather. 9:57. it's october 20, 2010. in "news 4 today" pope benedict xvi has named archdiocese don whirl to the college of cardinals. he designated a world relief statement calling it an honor for the archdiocese of washington. he celebrated mass at st. matthew of the apostles at 9:00 this morning. how's the weather?
