Nearly a foot of rain fell on the houston area overnight including flooding major interstates and stranding fans of Houston Rockets in the Toyota Center until early this morning. The president says the federal government will help in any way possible. I will anticipate that there will be some significant requests made. We will expedite those requests to make sure that both search and rescue operations where necessary but also recovery operations occur as efficiently and as quickly as possible. Investigators say Richard Conway drove his mother to this m mcdonalds parking lot last week where she allegedly killed a man and shot the mother of conways children. She was arrested last week in connection with a shooting here at the mcdonalds in waldorf. Now, the victim, Navy Reservist robert mange and his wife expecting to pick up her children. There was a longstanding custody dispute. Police say Caroline Conway the grandz mother of the children killed robert mange and seriously wounded his wife krystal. Detectives say the prince georges officer Richard Conway helped his mother before and after the shooting at mblg mcdonalds. Richard conway was off duty when this crime occurred and detectives are looking into the possibility that his firearm was used in this case. And it has not been located. From the air and in the light of day, the streets of houston look more like canals after flash floods swept across the area overnight. More than ten inches of rain in some areas in just hours. The floodwaters overwhelmed dozens of city streets. Response teams carried out more than 500 high water rescues throughout the niceght and into the day. Just use common sense. Veronica, explain all of this rain. A lot of folks know its wet not just through this area but areas to the north of there. The big question, why . Well, its partially the result of an el nino pattern where you get the water temperatures in the eastern as well as in the Central Pacific warming so much so that it takes the jet stream and it amplifies it, really dig itsself down over the southwestern states keeps launching storm after storm system and intensifies those storms as it drives them eastward through texas, a lot of rainfall north into missouri oklahoma, even kansas and arkansas as well as louisiana. And we have seen just that. Unfortunately, it doesnt look as though this pattern is going to change very much as we go through the next week and a half to two weeks. Now, well be getting a short break today with most of the rainfall just east of that area. But of course they need to really have days to dry out and allow the water to recede.
