It came to rest very close to some icy waters. As mark barger reports, for so many reasons the end result could have been much worse. Reporter the md80 jet skidded off the runway crashed into an embankment through a chainlink fence resting just feet before the icy waters of chesapeake bay. The runway is about 7,000 feet. Approximately 45,000 to 5,000 feet down the runway, the aircraft veered to the left. Reporter passengers quickly evacuated the plane and ran onto the icy, snowcovered runway. Only a few of the 127 passengers and five crew members on board suffered minor injuries. I think the pilot did everything he could to slow the aircraft down. Obviously the pilot and the copilots good efforts were reflected in the fact that there were only minor injuries. You know, everybody had our seat belts on. It wasnt really that bad, but it was pretty scary. Okay sir. He is he comes up hes leaking fuel on the left side of his aircraft heavily. You said hes leaking fuel . Affirm. His wing is ruptured. Reporter pilots on the runway near the crash site alerted the tower that the plane had torn open its left wing and was leaking jet fuel. Port authority, port rescue and firefighting crews applied foam and the situation was under control. Reporter news of the crash quickly spread on social media. Pictures from the scene popped up on twitter, instagram and facebook all giving a glimpse of how close the plane came to crashing into the waters at the end of the runway. Now investigators from the National Transportation safety board will work to determine what went wrong as those on board the flight are thankful for all that went right. Mark barger, nbc news.
