can be sent to sweden to face sex crimes allegations. swedish prosecutors want to question assange. two former wikileaks volunteers claim that he raped and sexually assaulted them. assange has fought the extradition since december, 2010, when police arrested him in britain. new this morning, fire forces two families out of their homes. the fires in northwest d.c. and in silver spring both happened around midnight. we were there when firefighters arrived at the first house on n street in northwest just before midnight. the fire damaged a bedroom and the back porch. the row house next door also had smoke damage. no one was hurt. just after midnight, firefighters were called to this house fire along hale place in silver spring. we're told it started in the kitchen. no one was hurt. the cause of both fires are under investigation. a police officer facing charges in the deadly shooting of a culpeper county woman. this morning we are hearing from her husband in a news4 sclie exclusive. a special grand jury delivered a four-count indictment against officer daniel harmon wright. he shot and killed 54-year-old patricia cook during a confrontation in a catholic school parking lot in february. cook was unarmed. virginia state police originally said harmon wright fired his gun when cook rolled up her window on his arm and dragged him through the parking lot. a special prosecutor says that was a mistake. cook's husband tells us he's relieved that harmon wright was indicted. >> on one hand it feels relief, and on the other hand, it's showing me that progress is going on. that the system does work. >> harmon wright's mother was also indicted on three counts of forgery of public document. police say bethany sullivan was the culpeper police chief's administrative assistant when the force hired her son in 2006. harmon wright is being held behind bars. he's due in court on june 8. the transportation safety board of canada is leading the investigation of a midair deadly collision in northern virginia. u.s. investigators revealed the two planes involved are owned by employees of the faa and the ntsb. the crash happened monday in fauquier county, virginia. two people from one of the planes died after it crash-landed in a wooded area and caught fire. the pilot of the other plane survived. he remains in the hospital this morning. his name and his condition have not been released. the army says a local soldier is one two of men killed on memorial day in afghanistan. 51-year-old chief warrant officer john pratt of springfield, virginia, was killed monday when his helicopter crashed near kabul. 26-year-old captain john brainard of maine was also killed in the crash. the defense department is still investigating the cause of the crash. the decision 2012 ballot is officially set. mitt romney has locked up the gop nomination with an easy win in texas. but the milestone is being overshadowed a bit by one of his biggest supporters. angie dpgoff has more on that. >> reporter: good morning. on a day that mitt romney should have been celebrating his ticket to the november ballot, he was instead deflecting new drama over president obama's birth. first, let's start with texas. romney won nearly 7 % of the vote and earned at least 88 delegates. according to msnbc, that gives him 1,174 delegates, 30 more than he needed. the victory party didn't last long. romney's choice to celebrate the win at a fundraiser in vegas with donald trump is draw something major heat this morning. especially after the real estate mogul made these comments on cnbc's "squawk box." a lot of people are questioning his birth certificate. they're questioning the authenticity of his birth certificate. i don't consider myself birther or not birther. but there are some major questions hereby. >> romney responded by saying that he does not agree with everything his supporters say but that he still appreciates their votes in november, unfortunately, the embarrassment didn't end there. what's belong with this picture? romney's new iphone app called withmitt misspelled america -- it says amercia. either way it is wrong. as you see, it's not exactly the perfect start for the nominee. back to you. planned parenthood is shelling out serious cash to go after mitt romney. >> mitt romney says -- >> planned parenthood, we're going to get rid of that. >> romney is saying he'll deny women the birth control and cancer screenings they depend on. >> it is spending $1.4 million to run this ad in three battleground states including virginia. that's more than three times what the group spent during the 2008 campaign. the group says it plans on spending much more in the future. planned parenthood says it wants to use romney's own words to undermine his support among 65-year-old woman out alive from the rubble following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake in northern italy. firefighters say she shouted for help as they searched for survivors. rescuers are using dogs to search for missing people. the quake killed at least 16 people. it is the same area where another quake struck just days ago. 16 after the hour. this morning, police are searching for the person who mailed a severed human foot to the headquarters of canada's conservative party. police in ottawa were called shortly after a receptionist opened a blood-soaked box. another body part was discovered when police intercepted a second suspicious package. police in montreal recently discovered a severed torso in a suitcase. detectives in both cities are trying to figure out if the cases are linked. jurors in the john edwards trial will deliberate for an eighth day in a sign they may not be close to a verdict. they told the judge of their upcoming scheduling conflicts over the next two weeks. the judge warned the jurors not to talk in small groups outside the jury room because it could interfere in their reaching a decision together. john edwards is accused of using nearly $1 million in campaign contributions to hide his pregnant mistress during his presidential run in 2008. he denies the charges. in another high-profile trial, four young men are -- who are accusing former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky of child sex abuse are asking a judge to keep their real names from the public. lawyers for three of the victims filed motions to prevent their identities from being released. the fourth victim is asking to use a different name during the upcoming trial. the judge could rule on the request as early as today. sandusky faces 52 criminal counts of child sex abuse of ten boys over a 15-year period. he has repeatedly denied the allegations. jury selection is set to begin next week. the former rutgers university student convicted of bias intimidation is apologizing. 20-year-old dharun ravi was sentenced to 30 days in jail for using a web cam to videotape his roomma roommate, tyler clementi, kissing a man and sharing it on the internet. clementi committed suicide days later. on tuesday, raffi's lawyer released a statement saying he was sorry for his thoughtless, stupid, insensitive, childish choices. he will begin serving his sentence tomorrow. a child is recovering after falling nearly 20 feet from a rock climbing wall in florida. emily davis fell saturday during the marylandins/braves game -- marlins/braves game in miami. the harness that was but does not have engravings on it. federal health officials say the fake also has misspelled words on the blister packaging. the real aderal is orange or peach and has letters and numbers on each side of the pill. aderal treats attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as well as narcolepsy. the fda says consumers should consider the counterfeit unsafe, ineffective, and potentially harmful. a stay at the disney village, and almost $900 in disney gift certificates. on memorial day, brendan pulled a name out of a hat. the winner was liberty hope steele, the 2-year-old daughter of 25-year-old making its ways. the government rested its case yesterday. federal prosecutors accuse clemens of lying to congress about his use of performance-enhancing drugs. that was more than four years ago. this trial was supposed to last four to six weeks. we are now in week seven. the nationals will hope to end a two-game losing streak in miami tonight. the marlins beat the nats 3-1 yesterday. miami has now won the first two games of this three-game series. the nats are now 29-20 on the season and still in first place. the marlins and mets are a game and a half behind them. back here in washington, soccer fans will have a chance to see one of the world's best teams compete tonight. brazil takes on team usa at fedex field. more than 60,000 people are expected to pack the stadium for that game. this will be the 17th meeting between the two teams. the u.s. has won just one of those games. and that came in 1998. wizards fans will have their fingers crossed tonight as they find out if they'll >> all right. thank you very much. 5:32 now. the stage is set for decision 2012. a blowout win in texas gives mitt romney the delegates he needs to secure the republican nomination. instead of focusing on his win, romney is having to deal with some controversial comments by one of his biggest supporters. tracie potts joins us live from capitol hill with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the birther controversy following mitt romney and donald trump as they campaign together. but first, romney is celebrating victory after that long, bitter primary race. he's now got 30 more delegates than he actually needs to win the republican nomination later in the summer. in las vegas, he not only slammed president obama, but he was also talking about donald trump and campaigning with him and fund-raising with him. romney testing his message to undecided voters. >> independent voters aren't making up their minds right now. we've seen in past campaigns they make up their minds very late. >> reporter: he's gotten some criticism for hanging out with donald trump who has been talking yet again about president obama and whether or not he was born in the united states. that birther controversy following romney as well. he's turned over his own michigan birth certificate to reuters to the news agency which requested it after some birthers brought up the fact that they believe he was born in mexico but actually that birth certificate pretty clearly shows that mitt romney was born in detroit. >> tracie potts live on capitol hill. thank you. and romney's win has pundits thinking about his v.p. choice. that has the spotlight back on virginia governor bob mcdonnell. he got behind romney long before it was clear who would win the nomination. the governor's popularity and virginia's key role as a swing state puts mcdonnell on many vice presidential short lists. for now, the governor is not taking the bait. >> anybody who get a call for the party's nominee and says you can help our country, our party, of course, you'd listen. i've got the best job in america. the job held by thomas jefferson and patrick henry. i'm not looking for anything else. >> he told wto p that he is not being vetted by the romney campaign and is planning to finish his term as governor which ends in 2014. today the newest d.c. council member will officially take his seat. kenyan mcduffie will be sworn in as a ward 5 council member. he bob a special election this month and -- he won a special election this month and will replace harry thomas jr. he will resign after admitting to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in government funds. mcduffie worked on public safety issues for mayor gray before running for office. this morning, a metro worker has life-threatening injuries after being trapped under a train. this happened at the shady grove maintenance yard. the train there somehow hit the worker and pinned him underneath. rescuers used large equipment to lift the train and free him. we're told that man was conscious the entire time. metro is investigating and has notified the national transportation safety board about this incident. things have gone from bad to worse for facebook shareholders. the social network's stock took another tumble yesterday. fell about 9% to hit a new low of $29 a share. that's down about 23% from its ipo less than two weeks ago. facebook's market value has plummeted about $20 billion since that initial public offering. that's according to reuters. one week and counting until a casino dubbed one of the largest in the country opens here in our region. news4 got a sneak peek inside maryland live at arundel mills. listen to the stats here -- it is $500 million, the cost of the complex, the size of three football fields. it includes 3,200 slots, six restaurants, plus it has retail and live entertainment space. the casino will have a late night opening wednesday at 10:00 p.m. maryland live will close regularly at 2:00 a.m. during the week and 4:00 a.m. on the weekends. >> that's when we come to work. who can stay up that late? you're going to want to avoid when you're out 15 before the hour now. last night's thunderstorms have left music fans with just one last chance to say good-bye to the go-go creator, chuck brown. police tried to clear the crowd outside the howard theatre when heavy rain and lightning moved into the area. hundreds were waiting in line for brown's public viewing. the 75-year-old died on may 16 after entertaining fan for decades. the viewing was the only chance some people had to pay their respects to the music legend. >> you have people that was waiting out here for a long time. you know, people that went to work, got off work, kids babysited, you know. they're standing out here in the poring rain. >> the crowd got rowdy when police closed the venue. extra officers were called in to defuse tensions. the doors opened later, and the viewing continued. brown's casket will be moved to the washington convention center. a public memorial service will be held there tomorrow. the ceremony begins at noon. the public is urged to use metro because of limited parking in the area. virginia tech is a step closer to adding new surveillance cameras to improve campus security. the university in blacksburg hired a northern virginia company to install a video security network with as many as 2,500 cameras across campus. the contract with x7 systems integration is worth nearly $1 million. university police have talked about a centralized security camera system for years. campus safety once again became a prominent issue in december when a campus police officer was shot and killed. d.c. police how it video helps solve a murder. they say dwayne brisbane was stabbed to death earlier this month along florida avenue in the shaw neighborhood. investigators say brisbane of driving home when he got into an argument with a man in the street. they say he stabbed brisbane who then crashed his car while trying to drive to the hospital. police are offering a cash reward of up to $25,000 in this case. it looks like voter will get to weigh in on maryland's same-sex marriage law. opponents submitted $11 -- 113,000 signatures to that petition -- to petition for that law. that is more than twice the number needed to make the issue a referendum on november's ballot. maryland's law legalizing same-sex marriage does not go into effect until january. an aide to former maryland governor bob ehrlich convicted in a robo call scheme must pay $1 million in damages. prosecutors say julius henson's telephone company made deceptive calls on election day in 2010 to democrats in expect some major traffic headaches if you plan on using the wilson bridge from maryland into virginia this weekend. all the threw lanes of the inner loop will be closed for paving work. construction should start tomorrow night. weather permitting. crews will reduce the lanes to just one lane between the wilson bridge and telegraph road. by friday night, though, all the threwlanes will be close -- thrulanes will be closed. everything should be back to normal for monday's commute. if you're one of millions of virginia's commuters to use e-zpass, v-dot wants to know what you would think of using a monthly fee. the agent is considering proposals on implementing a $1 monthly charge. it says it needs the money to keep up with costs of operating the program. it hopes to make a final decision on completed a multimillion dollar safety improvement project. special rail guards have been installed to help trains move between the tracks. that reduces the risk of derailment. the ntsb recommended the improvement after a train jumped the tracks at mt. vernon five years ago. that project cost about $57 million. the district's chief financial official says the city can't afford the proposed changes to d.c. taxi cabs. the "washington examiner" reports natwar gandhi says the mayor's 2013 budget did not include sufficient funds. he says the district would need to spend $670,000 next year to implement the plan. the current proposal calls for hiring new inspectors, requires drivers to install panic buttons, paint their cars the same color, and accept credit cards. the bill would fund the changes using a new 50-cent surcharge. starting next month, those who rely on unemployment benefits will lose them in the district. the employment director says nearly 1,700 people out of work in the city will use up their extended unemployment benefits by june 9. d.c. officials urge everyone on unemployment to look for a job. many are already using tools at the jobs center? northeast washington. seven other states yesterday. the bush-era law requires that all students be proficient in reading and math by 2014. exempt states still have to promise to improve how they prepare and, evaluate students for college and careers. 19 states have been granted waivers this year. 18 others and the district have also applied for waivers and could receive approval in the coming weeks. today mark the beginning of a new era for d.c. high school sports. mayor vincent gray will announce that for the first time all d.c. schools will compete for the same championship. the newly created d.c. state athletic association will allow public, charter, and independent schools to play again each other for championship games. that includes one of d.c.'s biggest crowns, the turkey bowl, which takes place every thanksgiving. girls and boys lacrosse, country, and soccer titles will be up for grabs this fall. winter and spring sports are not covered by the new rules. today, 50 of the nation's brightest
