flight home. overnight she expressed thanks in a letter written to an italian organization that supported her. she thanked all italians who "shared my suffering and let me survive with hope." knox left the prison she's been living in for four years last night. the president of the italy foundation said inmates were chanting for her at the prison. an italian appeals court threw out knox's and her former boyfriend's convictions for the murder of meredith kercher. they threw out crucial dna evidence used to convict them. knox and her boyfriend have always maintained their innocence. >> we are thankful for the support we received from all over the world. people who took time to research the case and could see that amanda and rafael were innocent. >> meredith kercher's family released a statement that read "we respect the decision of the judges, but we do not understand how the decision of the first trial could be so radically o r overturned." >> a crowd of family and supporters cheered halfway around the world as knox was acquitted. the group began to chant she's free, and we did it. members of the group friends of amanda were overjoyed by the verdict. >> i feel like passing out. i'm so overwhelmed. it's just -- it's amazing. tlling it's great. >> this is what we were waiting for. we're very happy. we'll take her any way we can get her. >> knox and her family are expected to return to seattle. her supporters say they're planning a boisterous welcome home celebration. happening today, the trial for the so-called underwear bomber is expected to begin. he was hauled off a flight from amsterdam to detroit on christmas day 2009 after trying to set off a bomb stitched in his underwear. the young nigerian is expected to denounce america as the enemy of islam while representing himself at trial. a man accused of attempting to fly model airplanes filled with explosives into the pentagon and u.s. capitol pled not guilty in court. rezwan ferges appeared in a massachusetts court for a bail hearing. his lawyer asked for more time to prepare. undercover agents posing as al qaeda operatives delivered him explosives. the attorney says the case against her client was, quote, orchestrated and facilitated by the government. the anti-defamation league will hold a thank you ceremony for the agents. farooq ahmed was arrested last year after being part of a terror plot. he took pictures of metro stations and made suggestions on how to kill the most people. he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. the assistant director of washington's field office will accept the award. some drivers getting out of a speeding ticket after one of prince george's county speed cameras mistakenly issued citations. 23 drivers were cited for driving on high ridge road in bowie. the problem is the cameras are not supposed to be in operation on the weekend. the drivers will have the ticket waived or be reimbursed. it is not a county-wide problem, and the camera has been reprogrammed. researchers for the department of health say there is still no definitive link between an army base and a cancer cluster in the surrounding community. for years they've been studying claims the rate of cancer is higher in the area around ft ft. detrick in maryland. in an area about a mile around the base there is an increased incidence of cancer, but they can't pinpoint the cause. >> the problem they have is the data is not consistent. they don't have enough systems in place to actually evaluate it properly. >> we live in a farming community where a lot of things have been put down over the years. so i think it's jumping the gun to say we're looking at exposure from ft. detrick before we even find out where the cluster was before we can assess what the exposure might have been. >> many believe years of chemical weapons testing in and around ft. detrick is the cause of the cancer rate. however investigators say finding out the cause will take more time. the defense is expected to call final witnesses in the trial of a fairfax woman accused of killing her granddaughter. dela rosa's lawyers argue she was insane when she threw her grand daughter off a sidewalk at tyson's corner last december. park rangers testified that dela rosa attempted to take her life in a car crash two months before the tyson's incident. a suspected illegal immigrant arrested in prince william county died while in custody of the immigrations and customs enforcement bureau. workers at the farmville detention center found anibal ramirez in custody. he was diagnosed with liver failure. delays on metro over the holiday weekend. metro will close the three stations along the green and yellow lines. shaw, "u" street, and columbia heights, for track work. the stations will shut down at 10:00 on friday and reopen on tuesday morning. shuttle buses will operate between mt. vernon square and georgia avenue stations. buses will replace trains between east falls church and west falls church. crews will be working on the dulles rail project. those two stations will shut down friday at 10:00 and reopen monday morning. the tsa is buying new equipment that will allow it to check airline passenger boarding passes for alterations, called identification technology. the scanners verify the boarding passes match. tsa says it will help passengers move through check points faster and improve overall security. the machines will be in place for testing next year. getting through airport security is about to get easier for select travelers. the program is called when he check. under the new program, tsa agents will assess passengers who volunteer more information about themselves before a flight. those passengers would be sent to secured lanes for expedited screening. it begins next year atlanta, detroit, dallas/ft. worth, and miami. apple will introduce its new upgrade in smart phones, but the question remains, will it be the iphone 5, and who will be able to get prosecutor told nbc news he will definitely file an appeal. former prince george's county council member leslie johnson whorb johnson, who pled guilty in a criminal probe, asked to postpone her hearing. right now her hearing is set for october the 13th. letter attorney filed paperwork seeking a delay because of, quote, scheduling conflicts. jack johnson was scheduled to be sentenced september 13th, but it was postponed to december 6th. council is expected to set up a task force to examine the council's ethics guidelines. it would take a broad review before drafting a new ethics code and giving it to the mayor and council. ethics reform has been a hot topic after several members violated ethics. fannie mae knew about trouble years ago but did nothing to stop them. that's a report from a government watchdog group. the report from the group finds problems first surfaced as far back as 2003, but it claims fannie mae did nothing to stop the alleged abuses after news reports first surfaced in 2012010t. their accused of violating laws with false foreclosure documents. the president's visit to a solar panel manufacturer. members of the president's cabinet were worried about the financial health of solyndra, which shut down just months after receiving a $550 million loan. the emergency room physician who treated michael jackson the day he died said that jackson's personal physician dr. conrad murray never disclosed he gave michael jackson propofol. murray was desperate to bring him back to life although it was clear that jackson had not been breathing for hours. they said that propofol can be a serious life-threatening drug when taken without precautions. >> propofol can cause severe lung collapse, respiratory collapse, breathing collapse, and it could cause threw 2-year-old angelyn ongdok off a sky walk at tyson's corner last november. she suffered from depression, but defense claims her daughter's pregnancy pushed her over the edge. park police testified dela rosa tried to take her own life in a car crash two months before the tyson's incident. a man died while in custody of customs immigration and enforcement. i.c.e. says that workers at the farmville detention center found anibal ramirez unconscious on saturday morning. he was hospitalized and diagnosed with liver failure, and he died on sunday. an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of his death. the drink four loko is now being forced to relabel its cans after the government said the alcoholic malt drink is misleading consumers. the federal trade commission told fusion projects, the makers of four loko, to show that one super size can contains as much alcohol as four to five cans of beer and what should be considered servings because of the metro will be honored in a ceremony today. the anti-defamation league is holding the ceremony for the agents. farooq ahmed was arrested last year after joining what he believed was an al qaeda plot to bomb the transit system. he took pictures and video of several metro stations and made suggestions on how to kill the most people. he was sentenced to 23 years in prison, the assistant director of washington's field office will accept the award. this morning researchers for the department of health says there's no definitive link between a local army base and a suspected cancer cluster in the surrounding community. for years the government has been studying claims the rate of cancer is higher in communities around ft. detrick in maryland. it did show a slight increase in lymphoma based between 1992 and 2008 in an area about a mile around the base, but they cannot pinpoint the ruts. >> the problem that the data they have is not consistent, and they don't have enough systems in place will be present along with donald trump for the opening. chris christie could join the presidential race as early as today. the new jersey governor has been mulling a presidential run after several high profile republicans have pleaded with him to get into the race. it could dramatically reshape the 2012 presidential race. christie is reportedly asking top republicans to hold off on any especially dorisments. a shakeup for michelle bachmann's staff as she tries to revive her campaign. four staffers have now left her campaign. bachmann said the departures were planned and have nothing to do with her slumping poll numbers. three of the staffers are returning to her congressional office. marylanders are almost split on whether to allow same sex marriage. 41% of voters favor allowing same sex marriage while 49% are against the legislation. the split appears to be on racial lines. of those who approve of gay marriage, 51% are white. while those that disapprove, 59% is african of a woman. police say the 56-year-old woman was inside her kitchen when the man opened the sliding glass door. he reportedly grabbed her from behind, threw her to the floor, and tried to take off her clothes. police say the woman fought back and the suspect took off. investigators say the woman and neighbors gave a good description of the suspect. congress is putting the immigration debate in the create jobs usa fund. starbucks and several institutions are teaming up for the venture. ceo howard schultz called the fund an engine for job growth that has now stalled. it's designed to give entrepreneurs access to credit so they can hire again. starbucks foundation gave $5 million to get the fund started. starting on the 1st of november, start bucks customers will be able to donate to
