a bizarre case, derrick. >> reporter: bizarre indeed. you witness what appears to be a kidnapping in broad daylight with dozens of people watching. what would do you? citizens in stafford faced with just such a question yesterday. authorities said they did the right thing even though what appeared to be a kidnapping turned out to be something else. the video is very disturbing in a target parking lot in virginia. two women and a man struggle with a teenager. she was screaming i don't want to go. eventually, she's overpowered and forced into a mini van, which pulls off. a number of horrified witnesses call police. >> a nationwide amber alert had been issued. thanks to the efforts of the fbi, the jacksonville police department, the florida highway patrol were able to locate this individual. >> reporter: it turns out those so-called abductors were the girl's family members located in florida. they were passing through virginia on their way to a move to florida, a move that the teen did not want to make. a very different story than the one the video surveillance portrayed. >> certainly every indication showed to us that she was being taken against her will. >> reporter: the video also shows people walking or driving by the scene. no one physically intervened, but several did call police, and authorities here say the system worked. >> first and foremost, we don't want any citizen to be injured in this type of situation. the fact that numerous witnesses called the stafford county sheriff's office was exactly what they should do. >> reporter: an apparently happy ending. this incident remains under investigation. authorities in stafford county, including the commonwealth attorney, are pondering whether any charges should be filed against the family. it's believed the trip originated in rhode island. they've not been publicly nid. >> derrick ward live in the newsroom. thank you, derrick. one man is dead after a stabbing at a metro station. it happened at about 3:00 a.m. at the congress heights metro station along the 1200 block of pennsylvania avenue. police do not have a spektuspec. the identity of the victim has not been released. police are looking for a sexual predator after attack near another metro station. this happened friday around 6:30 p.m. at the greenbelt metro station. police say a 15-year-old girl had just left the station and was walking through a metro tunnel when a man started talking to her. she kept walking. he followed her on a foot path that led to a neighborhood and sexually assaulted her. some metro riders say more security is needed at the metro station. >> i think it's dangerous. things keep happening between here and college park. it should be more secure. it's not secure at all. even after the incident, there's no one here. i think something should be done. >> the teenager described her attacker as a hispanic male in his 30s, heavy set with dark curly hair. she says he 4 a dark reddish complexion and a tattoo of a snake on his arm. today british airways workers walked off the job again. cabin crew members walked off on another strike. it's part of a dispute over pay and staffing during long flights. the workers launched a strike last monday. they're picketing again because talks collapsed last friday. it's affecting many flights to and from london's heathrow airport. in march seven days of walkouts cost british airways $63 million. >> the top kill was a bust. bp is moving on to its next plan for stopping the oil leak in the gulf. the top kill plan involved plugging the well with mud, but it wasn't enough. this next plan involves capping it with a funnel like device t could take four to seven days. meanwhile, more oil is leaking into the gulf. bp officials admit they must do better. >> we're putting a lot more of the control, a lot more of the authority, and a lot more of the people much closer to where the action is. >> the only surefire solution is to drill a relief well, but that could take until august. bp's chief operating officer has been getting death threats. >> there is also rising concern about the effect the spill will have on the seafood industry, both in the region and here locally. guests along the waterfront this weekend were wondering how the disaster will affect products and prices. but row after row of fish, crab, shrimp, and oysters and even the louisiana specialty, the crawfish, proved there is no immediate concern. locally, we're enjoying a good harvest from the chesapeake bay. one local merchant worries about the impact the oil spill will have on his business later this year. >> my main concern with the crabs will be in the wintertime because that's where i get them from november until end of march. you know, so that's quite a long time. i don't know what i'm going to do at that time. >> we're shrimp people and shellfish. right now they're all right. >> the hope is that both sellers and buyers of fresh seafood will continue to do all right as everyone keeps an uneasy watch on the cleanup in the gulf. 9:05 right now. 76 degrees outside and warming up quickly. actor dennis hopper has died. we'll take a look at the defining moments of his career. >> the nba final,set. dennis hopper, one of hollywood's most famous bad boys, has died after a battle with prostate cancer. hopper shot to stardom with the 1969 film "easy rider." he both directed and co-starred in it. hopper also had memorable roles in "apocalypse now," "hoosiers," "blue velvet," and "speed." his personal life was plagued with problems. he was married five times and struggled with alcohol and drugs. >> alcohol and drugs caused me to hit bottom. i went insane hearing voices, some classic stuff. >> hopper was last seen in public in march when he received a star on the hollywood walk of fame. dennis hopper was 74 years old. met owe riders are in for another day of delays on the orange line. there is no service between the east falls church and west falls church stations today or tomorrow. the service disruption is related to the dulles metro rail project. metro will be running free shuttle buses between those stations. you should still add an extra 40 has been cancelled. the 17-year-old has been found. it turns out she was with her family the entire time. the girl was taken by force from a target in fredericksburg. police found her early this morning in ft. lauderdale, florida. this surveillance video from the target parking lot shows her family taking her against her will. authorities say the family was moving to florida and stopped in virginia. the teen told police she did not want to move. the family members had to force her back into the van while she kicked and screamed. the stafford county sheriff's office is investigating. prosecutors will meet to decide whether to file any charges. a teenager assaulted near a metro station in prince george's county, and this morning the man who did it is still on the loose. police hope the victim's description will help lead them to her attacker. news 4's darcy spencer reports. >> reporter: police say a 15-year-old girl was sexually assaulted about 6:30 friday night along a foot path near the greenbelt metro station. they say the teenager was leaving the station when a man attempted to talk to her then followed her as she walked from the station toward the foot path leading to a neighborhood. owazo uses the foot path often and found the attack alarming. do you consider it to be dangerous? >> if you're alone, yes. but if you're with a bunch of people -- because i do, every time i am on this path, doi move with people. i try not to be by myself. i'm a little bit shocked that at 6:30 it did happen. i'm very worried, being that it happened to somebody that young. >> reporter: the foot path is on the back side of the metro station. if you're coming from inside the station, you walk through a tunnel to get there. the path connects through a neighborhood and a community park. there are surveillance cameras inside the tunnel facing both ways. it's unclear whether the cameras may have picked up the attacker or if he ever entered the station. riders say more security sneis needed on or around metro property. >> it's dangerous. things keep happening between here and college park. there's a lot of students around. i think they should be more secure. it's not secure at all. even after the incident, there's no one here. i think something should be done. >> reporter: darcy spencer, "news 4 today." that teenager described her attacker as a hispanic male in his 30s, heavy set, dark curly hair. he has a reddish complexion and a tattoo of a snake on his left arm. more violence in prince george's county this morning. two people are dead in separate shootings. the first one happened in suitland around 7:25 last night. police say a man was shot in the 6700 block of oth road. he died in the hospital. police have not released any information on suspects or a motive. and then in riverdale another man was shot to death near a gas station. he was discovered around 9:30 last night in the 6600 block of riverdale road. that man died at the hospital. police have not yet made any arrests. a fender bender turned into a tragedy on the beltway overnight. one of the drivers was killed when he was hit by another car. this happened at about 3:00 this morning on i-95 at richie marlboro road near district heights. police say there was a minor crash between two cars. they pulled over. one driver walked out to check on the other and then was hit by oncoming traffic. police have identified the man as 29-year-old carlton smith jr. of laurel. the crash shut down all lanes on the outer loop northbound for several hours. another try, another failure. a live look at that massive oil leak in the gulf. it is still gushing untold gallons of oil. bp admits its top kill experiment was a bust. now the oil company is turning to another plan b, but success is not guaranteed. nbc's jay gray reports from venice, louisiana. >> reporter: after 41 days, there's only one thing that seems clear in the gulf right now. >> we have been unable to overcome the flow from the well. >> reporter: after determining the top kill was not working late yesterday, this morning crews are now working on the next option to try to get some kind of control of the leak. >> reporter: this operation should be able to capture most of the oil. but it will not seal the well. >> it's just put this terrible, sad, disheartening pall on everyone's existence here. >> reporter: at the bell chase seafood festival, there's a growing fear that their way of life, along with the shrimp, fish, and oysters, is slip agwai. >> we're just absolutely heart sick about the environment. >> reporter: an environment under attack by thick, dark crude. a community desperate but unable to fight back. >> it's almost like we're sitting on our hands but not because of lack of volition but just because we don't know what we can do. >> reporter: it's looking more and more now like no one is sure what to do to stop the oil as the largest environmental disaster in u.s. history continues to grow. jay gray, nbc news, venice, louisiana. today thousands will honor military men and women who have lost their lives defending our country. motorcycles will roll through the district in a couple of hours as rolling thunder holds its annual memorial day weekend rally. bikers are already streaming into the city for the start of that rally. they're actually at the pentagon. you see the parking lot packed. rolling thunder honors american prisoners of war and those missing in action. yesterday they held a rally at the navy memorial. today's rally will leave the pentagon at noon today and arrive at the lyndon memorial around 12:30. virginia congressman randy forbes will lead the ride and speak during a special ceremony at the lincoln memorial. the national memorial day concert will take place tonight. last night hundreds of people got a chance to sit in on the dress rehearsal. ♪ as high as a flag on the fourth of july ♪ >> the annual event honored american veterans and current members of the u.s. armed forces. this year's concert features actors joe montegna and gary sinise as well as the national symphony orchestra. it will be broadcast live from the west lawn [ static ] we continued watching breaking news in prince george's county. three people have been found dead inside a house there. they apparently were overcome by fumes coming from a basement generator. >> this happened in the 3600 block of 38th avenue in hyattsville. we're joined by mark brady with the prince george's county fire department. mark, thanks for joining us. can you start and tell us what happened. >> about 9:15 this morning we received a 911 call reporting someone having difficulty breathing at that address in the hiyattsville area. paramedics dispatched to the scene. upon their arrival, they found two people unconscious. they were soon declared deceased, and a third person was soon located after that. upon further investigation, paramedics found a generator running in the basement more than likely providing a large amount of co, which overcame the residents and eventually took their lives. >> mark, at this point, do we know anything about those people? do you suspect this was a family? >> you know, again, we're very fresh into this incident, and because these are unattended deaths, the local law enforcement will be assisting the fire department in the investigation of exactly what happened, who was the person that called 911, why was the generator running in the basement, were they out of electricity? if so, for what reason. so there are a lot of questions yet to be answered. we're working with local law enforcement to find out exactly what happened. >> mark, a lot of smoke detectors double as co2 detectors these days. was there not one present in the house or not working? >> we're going to be looking into that. what we find is most homes in prince george's county have a working smoke alarm. however, co alarms have not really caught on yet. it might be to the expense of them where people don't really feel they need them. really, as a resident, it's the only way to detect the presence of carbon monoxide in your home because carbon monoxide, as we all know, it's a by-product. you cannot smell it, see it, or taste t that's why we call it the silent killer because it overcomes -- suffocates you from the inside out basically and what it does. it happens, and you don't even know it's happening. >> all the more amazing they were able to make a 911 call. to avoid a future tragedy like this for other families, what would you say if you're feeling any of these symptoms that apparently at least one of them was able to feel and call 911?
