which brings the storm inland over the next 6 to 12 hours right over new orleans, potentially as a category 1 hurricane. we're talking about temperatures or winds upwards of 80 to even 90 mile per hour right around the city of new orleans. we're watching this one very, very closely but a long duration event, biggest threat is going to be the wind and, veronica, we're talking about the winds out there right now, not just the wind, but the biggest threat, the rain and slow-moving storm system and, again, that water with that easterly fetch that will be making its way, giving a huge storm surge of about 6 to 12 feet for the diration of this storm system. again, you heard doug say more landfall right around louisiana to new iberia. doug? >> yeah, again, the bigger threat here, the other big threat is going to be tornadoes. tornado watch in effect until 7:00 local time here. we have already seen a couple tornado warnings still in effect towards the western portion of the florida panhandle and parts of alabama, too. mike sidel along orange beach right now where we are still seeing some of the winds and the waves starting to come on. mike sidel right now in orange beach, alabama. >> we've been buffeted of wind gusts up over 50 miles per hour. the strongest winds coming with the squalls and rotating in around isaac. we're well northeast of the storm and squalls coming off the southeast of the gulf of mexico. just off shore of the buoy here in orange beach, we have wave heights 16 to 18 feet. out here they're running about 10 to 12 footers and the next high tide coming in tomorrow morning around 10:20. not a whole lot of tidal range here, but, again, that will chew up more beach. we will get the beach erosion and wind erosion from the winds sustained right now running at 35 miles per hour. inland areas, the impact like over louisiana. heavy rainfalls expecting 6 to 12 inches of rain. everybody is headed for the hills, but they'll be back for labor day weekend. this is a long duration event. thus, these beaches are going to be chewed up and we expect little in property damage out here because the winds are not going to gust extremely high. back to you. >> all right, that's the report from down in that area. over a bit to the east in tampa, florida, the republican national convention is now under way in earnest. it was delayed, of course, one day by the storm. late this afternoon, delegates nominated mitt romney as their candidate. he will officially become the nominee when he makes his acceptance speech on thursday. the keynote address tonight will be provided by rising gop leader chris christie, the governor of new jersey. mitt romney's wife, ann, is another of the night's main speakers and she'll offer a personal view of her husband, the candidate. virginia is one of the critical battleground states in this election. bob mcdowell will speak tonight and outline the repubcan platform of which he's the chairman when he takes the stage in tampa. aaron gilchrist is in tampa and he caught up with the governor today. >> we did, jim. i should mention first that the roll call is just about done and we're on wisconsin, obviously, wyoming will come after that and the roll call will be complete, but the magic moment, if you will, happened just a short while ago. take a listen. >> new jersey! 50. romney! >> and with that we saw over the top pop up on the screen, meaning enough delegates had been delegated and voted for mitt romney to take him over the top. that number 1,144 votes to become the official nominee of the republican party for the president of the united states. of course, as you said, jim, that nomination won't actually go into effect until thursday when mitt romney accepts the nomination. so, as the roll call wraps up here and there will be a little recess, the biggest part of the program, some of the big speech will happen in the evening today. virginia governor bob mcdowell, as you noticed, he will talk in the 8:00 hour and we got an opportunity to sit down and talk with him about a few different things and we began with what he will say to this convention tonight. >> we'll showcase some of the things that the republican governors have been doing and why states with republican governors are doing a little bit better. we talk about the american dream and some of the policies of the current administration that have not been helpful to job growth and things that mitt romney will do to make it better. >> virginia figures very prominently in this election. >> it does. we're finally getting some attention. for 40 years they ignored virginia because it was deemed that the presidential race level to be a pretty safe republican state. >> i think that we're getting attention now. i think virginia is a swing state. both candidates have been in virginia the last month and said, if i don't win virginia, i won't be president. they have confidence with the republican team and attorney general and we can marshal the troops and provide the leadership in the state to help them win. >> that said, what, if any, type of pressure does it then put on bob mcdowell to deliver to virginia? >> well, i think we have to be able to deliver. i don't feel pressure. i think if we outline the ideas. the same ideas i ran in 2009 by the jobs and school and roads and energy and spending and government reform and protecting individual liberty. that's what i talked about. >> now, you can expect to hear more about all those things during governor mcdowell's speech tonight, as well as him hammering away at president obama at this point as he tries to make the case for mitt romney, as will every speaker we hear from tonight. more on what you can expect from chris christie and it looks loo thick nominating process has been completed. wyoming has cast its votes for mitt romney. we should also note that ron paul has made a significant showing here. he won three states in terms of getting the majority of the votes for those states. for now that's the situation live in tampa, vance, back to you. >> thanks. a plea tonight from the woman of a man who was brutally attacked. she is hoping the surveillance video released today will help police find the people who brutally attacked her husband. pat? >> wendy, it now appears this man was beaten to the edge of death for a credit card. a credit card the suspect couldn't get to work. a big clue in this high-profile, capitol hill attack. and a heartfelt plea from the victim's wife. >> absolutely critical that people watch the video and that we unconscious by a passerby who calls 911 for help. since that day, he has been in the washington hospital center where he's undergone two brain operations. his wife says he is improving. that he is responding. >> one of the greatest moments we had is that i wrote him a message, i didn't read it to him, but it said, can you put up two fingers and i just held it up for him and he did it. that is a huge, huge step from where we were. >> if you know anything about that car, if you know anything about this case, d.c. police want to hear from you. live on capitol hill, i'm pat collins, new 4z. >> thanks, pat. we switch gears now in a big way because there's some big news out of redskins park. one of the most popular players on the skins has been cut from the team. we're talking about chris cooley. >> he was one of the good guys. stayed outf trouble, great player, represented the city well. >> he's been one of the most significant contributors if you look in terms of over time the news certainly comes as a shock to me. >> i thought it would be a big mistake if they cut chris cooley and now that they cut him, i say, yeah, go get him dallas. >> dan hellie in the newsroom now. we don't really want him to go to dallas, do we? >> let's hope he doesn't geto the cowboys. that wouldn't be good news. not only more popular selling more jerseys over the last eight years but produced at a high level when he's been healthy. this season, however, he did not fit into the redskins' plan as a starter. he was making a starter salary. cooley a two-time probowler and holds the all-time reception record with 428. matter of fact, he ranked 19th in nfl history on the career receiving list for tight ends. mike shanahan called the decision to release cooley as tough as it gets. the redskins did inform cooley was coming saying they would trade him. once a trade couldn't be worked out, they allowed cooley to break the news to the media. >> this organization has changed my life. in every way for the better and i appreciate it. i've loved every minute of playing here. it's been, it's been a good ride. it's been a pleasure. >> an emotional moment for cooley there will be a market for a tight end with cooley's credentials. he is only 30 years old, but doesn't sound like coolerk y will rush into a decision. he will likely wait for the right opportunity. we will have more on chris cooley and a new kicker in town for the redskins coming up at a 6:00. coming up a gas line explosion sends flames shooting 50 feet into the air. what happened moments just before may reveal what caused this inferno. >> do not grieve for me, because now i'm free. police and family in prince george's county giving a heart wrenching good-bye for one of their own. the young man growing up who of planned parenthood funding. in congress, ryan voted to ban all federal funding for planned parenthood and allow employers to deny women access to cancer screenings and birth control. and both romney and ryan backed proposals to outlaw abortion even in cases of rape and incest. for women... for president... the choice is ours. i'm barack obama, and i approve this message. honors and final good-byes for a fallen officer. the funeral services were held today for 23-year-old adrian morris. the prince george's police officer killed in a car crash while pursuing suspects. today family, friends and hundreds of officers from across the country came together to pay their respects as jackie benson reports, two words heard often today were thank you. >> adrian was a little man with a big heart and a larger than life dream. like many other jamaicans who migrate to the united states, he carried with him the passion to achieve, not just for himself, but for those who would look for a symbol of such possibilities. >> reporter: the world that 23-year-old adrian morris was so proud to be part of, honored him with the best it has. there is no greater respect than that shown for a fallen officer and his family. because she lost a beloved son, her family now grows much bigger. it includes every member of the prince george's county police department and all police officers than a police officer to me. he was a -- he was more than an explorer to me, he was my little brother. >> reporter: his final resting place in davidsonville, maryland, stretched for miles. it said thank you for the sacrifices made by you and your family. thank you for giving your life to protect the citizen of prince george's county. you will never be forgotten. jackie benson, news 4. now, let's head back down to new orleans and team 4 meteorologist doug who is tracking the storm and how soon it will come to shore there. >> yeah, it does look like we're coming to shore here overnight tonight, that's the track from the national hurricane center right now, wendy. some of the latest computer models are just starting to keep this down to the south of the coastline here, not bringing it into the new orleans area, but, still, that doesn't matter a whole lot. we're still going to see hurricane force winds here and right now winds gusting upwards of tropical storm force which is about 40 miles an hour. that's what we've seen here officially at the airport a they saw a wind gust of 43 miles per hour. take a look right now you can see a very angry mississippi river and you can see the bridge crossing the river into the city and that flag still blowing in the wind. what we're going to continue to see is very strong winds moving in and also very heavy rain. take a look at the radar picture and what you see here is that storm just off the coast right now. once again, making its way in and across the area. we are seeing some of the hevier rain bands right now coming through new orleans, but also out towards the east, in through portions of eastern louisiana and in through alabama and western portions of the florida panhandle where we currently have tornado warnings. this entire warning under a tornado watch right on through the night tonight and potential for tornadoes most likely through the day tomorrow. that is going to be a real concern here. most land falling hurricanes are really over the past couple of years, they've spawned about 3,500 to 100 tornadoes with the hurricanes that made landfall, including katrina which came through here seven years ago. not just about seven years ago. watch this track as it makes its way over new orleans here and making its way onshore. overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. that date significant. august 29th. that is seven years to the day that katrina made its way onshore. this storm will be a completely different storm than what katrina was. katrina a fairly fast mover and we saw the biggest problems here only because the levees broke and those levees will be tested, once again, but this time, not only from storm surge, but also from the potential for ten to maybe 20 inches of rain in some spots. that's what they're calling for. and, once again, winds gusting over 80 and even 90 miles an hour that coming from the official forecast and, of course, the national hurricane center. we'll continue to watch it for you and we'll be here all night tonight. as of right now, things just starting to ramp up, so, no real reports of damage down here just yet but we'll be here for you right through the night tonight and we'll come back tonight at 11:00. right now, we'll send it inside to veronica and, veronica, as we were talking about here, this is really going to be a huge rain producer and a huge rain producer for many parts of the country that really, really do need it. >> that's right. that the midwest. that is exactly where it looks like a lot of this moisture is going to be tracking northward. take a look, though, at some of the rainfall totals that have already been coming into louisiana. harvey, louisiana. close to four inches of rain already. it's a sizable storm with just the northern most part of those bands now making their way through southern louisiana, areas of southern alabama, mississippi and the panhandle of florida still and even a tremendous amount of those tropical rains, some starting to feed through south carolina. here, pretty quiet for our day. we had rain early on, not very much, and 91 was our temperature, expect the temperatures to go down a bit as we cool off and deal with comfortable conditions coming up and then right back up for the end of the week on friday. going to be a hot one. 88 is your temperature now. northwest breezes coming through quite comfortable at 16 miles per hour. there you can see just how warm it is everywhere. we cooled to the low 80s to the north and west and still in the upper 80s to the south and east and here's your rain from earlier today. meanwhile, the humidity, at least for the next few days, i think, will stay low with that dew point temperature around 60 degrees and that is very comfortable, folks, for a summer day around here. we have the sunshine on tap for tomorrow and high pressure moves in and that means even more sunshine coming our way, but, again, that moisture that will be making its way northward up into the midwest first for late friday and saturday and that is that drought stricken area and areas of the corn belt that really need the rain. here i think we'll see it arrive on late sunday, early part of the day on monday. 85 degrees for tomorrow. 95 there as your heat for friday and there is the big rains coming in. any day that i think would be a little soaker around here from isaac and tropical rains coming this way, i think that would be monday with showers and even some thunderstorms. we'll be back with doug, of course, in a couple of minutes. >> thanks, veronica. still ahead, the first day of school began with loudoun county with an arrest at one school campus. one day after the storm delay, delegates to the republican national convention got to work. one local virginia delegate ready for her moment in the spotlight now. the report coming up. president clinton: this election to me is about which... candidate is more likely to return us to full employment. this is a clear choice. the republican plan is to cut more taxes on upper-income... people and go back to deregulation. that's what got us in trouble in the first place. president obama has a plan to rebuild america from... the ground up, investing in innovation, education... and job training. it only works if there is a strong middle class. that's what happened when i was president. we need to keep going with his plan. president obama: i'm barack obama and... i approve this message. a substitute teacher at a middle school in loudoun county, virginia, was arrested today and charged with said barnes was act aing like she was intoxicated. she has been working with the loudoun county area for less than six months. school officials there say she won't work there any more. all eyes on the gulf of mexico as hurricane isaac makes his way towards land. new orleans and other parts of the gulf coast are getting strong winds and heavy rains. conditions are only expected to get worse. late this afternoon the u.s. coast guard closed the mississippi river to all traffic between new orleans and baton rouge. it will be closed through at least tomorrow. roll call is now completed and mitt romney oicially has enough delegate votes to become threpublican nominee for esident. here's a live look iide the convention in tampa where in just a couple hours we'll hear from mitt romney's wife, ann and new jersey governor, chris christie. aaron gilchrist and julie carey are live inside the convention. >> they just wrapped up the roll call and we're now in a recess and sort of the exciting moment of the afternoon where we listened to the states and territories assign their votes. the final count today was 2,061 votes for mitt romney and 190 vote did go to congressman ron paul and julie carey you have been watching some of the local delegations and how they went through this process, right? >> kind of their moment in the sun. that voting process wrapped up 20 minutes ago. it is important to point out that the official nomination won't hap until thursday. let's take a look right now at those spotlight moments for the local delegations. the district of columbia cast 19 votes for romney. from maryland, 37 votes were added to the total and after that later in the count, virginia governor bob mcdonnell who will speak later on this evening announced 46 of the commonwealth votes would go to romney and three of them went to ron paul. not a unanimous vote and virginia was among a handful of states that still had poll delegates. now barbara helped get the roll call process started. she was one of three romney campaign leaders to give speeches here today. she is the co-chair of virginia's campaign and he has come to the commonwealth to help her fund-raise and today she returned the favor with these words. >> mitt romney with humility, grace and delgence has succeeded at everything he's done. as a governor with a cabinet that was 50% women, turning around the scandal-plagued olympics as a businessman, as a husband, a father, a grandfather and a trusted friend. he is a man uniquely prepared and committed to lead america at this critical point when we can do so much better with the right leadership. >> and that was one of two brief, but high-profile moments for barbara comstock today. she gave a speech early in the afternoon up on the stage and putting barbara comstock and a lot of women front and center, that is also part of the romney campaign strategy and kind of an underline but understated theme today, they want it make that connection with voters and there is one more big moment coming up later tonight for that. >> that's right. ann romney will be one of the featured speakers in the 10:00 hour tonight. of course, part of theert there is to reach out to female voters and also to really start to paint a picture, a personal picture of mitt romney. that is something that his wife could only do in a lot of ways. so, we'll hear from her, again, in the 10:00 hour and chris christie giving the keynote speech about 10:30 tonight is what we expect. he will take president obama to task in his speech. chris christie not once to mince words, the governor of new jersey and this should be a speech that should fire up the folks who are here in the convention hall. of course, we'll watch all the speeches happening tonight, julie and i will.
