recent deaths, six soldiers from the 159th combat aviation brigade who died in a bombing thursday in afghanistan. overseas, troops also paused to pay tribute. at this base camp, a waffle fallen heros and an empty table setting to serve as reminders during wartime. back loam in hard-hit joplin, missouri, residences digging out from last week's deadly tornado even took time to remember the fallen. somber reflection, along with patriotic ceremonies across the country, marking this memorial day. michelle franzen, nbc news, new york. >> u.s. park police are trying to figure out what caused a woman to lose control of her car and slam into a tree in the washington parkway this morning. it happened just before 3:30 in the northbound lanes before the parkway north of route 92347 laurel and the crash killed the driver of the car and shut both direction of the parkway for more than four hours. police still have not identified the female driver who was killed in that accident. some of metro's train cars could be to blame for delays throughout the transit system. a metro board member says the britta 4,000 series metro cars are hurting on-time performance and that type of car has the worst record for breakdowns along the entire metro fleet. metro board member is calling for the transit agency to fix those cars especially since metro would have to use the cars for another six to eight years. so there they were up in baltimore about as regional a competition you can get. we're talking about men's lacrosse, the terps of maryland and the university of virginia. it was tough and we still don't know who won. >> we do, actually. >> i don't. >> i do. lindsay does, too. >> and the maryland men's lacrosse team haven't won a championship since 1957 and the unseeded terps face number seven virj who won it all. it was a back and forth battle, but in the end the cavaliers took advantage. uva gets the win 9-7. let's go to baltimore. against maryland first year had john tillman, fourth quarter and the terps trailed 6-5, and it's tied at six and take another look, ryan young comes up big time and ties that game up. then uva would strike quickly after that. colin, this guy, briggs had the game of his life and scored five goals today and sweet goal here and uva wins it 9 to 1k37 they capture the national championship and their first win since 2006 in the championship game shot at the national championship game. >> my uncle was the first national championships in maryland in 1937 and he was on the last of 1975. let's go. >> virginia lacrosse teams have won four national titles, trying to make it five today. this t-shirt says one love, a foundation named for yeardley love, the virginia women's lacrosse star allegedly murdered by hugly. >> it played a part in making them more focused and more disciplined and recognizing as he said we have to do this for her memory. we can't just continue on being lax. we have to be strong and we have to be committed and focused and i think the results are starting to show on the field. sdwloo some fans came a long way for the love of lacrosse. this group travelled from central new york, once syracuse lost, they adopted the terps. >> i'm a cuse fan and graduated 30 years ago and i have friends in the baltimore area, so absolutely, if the team will be my team, i'm definitely going root for the terps. the maryland virginia 4, a pair of gop women seem to be zeroing in on president obama's job this weekend. the president's focus, though, has been on filling the nation's top military job. emerging hip-hop star sean kingston is fighting for his life after a weekend accident. on this memorial day as michelle franzen reported, u.s. troops fighting in afghanistan took time-out to remember their fallen comrades. it was a flag raising ceremony at dawn at the u.s. base in kabul and at another base in eastern afghanistan, soldiers enjoyed a traditional cookout, but a special table was set in the middle of a dining hall and it featured an empty plate and chair in memory of those who have been killed in combat. more than 1,060 military men and women have been killed in afghanistan since the war there began ten years ago. today two republican women with charisma and conservative views looked a lot like they were campaigning for president. the question is whether michele bachmann or sarah palin will actually run. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: thanks. good evening. palin and bachmann are taking attention away from declared republican candidates and tim pawlenty and newt gingrich, but taking on an get in, the better the chances for barack obama. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. when sarah palin left washington today she moved on to fort mchenry in baltimore and from let family traveled to gettysburg. there is a new report that suggests that real toll of the earthquake in haiti might not be quite as catastrophic as the haitian government initially reported. that number is nonetheless, exceedingly severe. the report was commissioned for the u.s. government by the agency for international development. according to the associated press those findings suggest that no more than 89,000 people were killed in the quake in 2010. the haitian government put the death toll above 300,000. the report also suggests that fewer people were left homeless than the united nations has estimated. there has been no official reaction yet to that report. coming up, mother nature puts on a dramatic water show. not everyone twont ocean city for memorial day, we'll stop by other well-known shores. well, kind of a hot one out there. i hear everyone saying it seems too soon for it to be this hot, but we're never satisfied, are we? >> no. i don't think anybody ever is. you gets a day that's 82 and no humidity and everyone loves you and then it goes on 96 and then, it's, like, what are you doing? we still have three weeks of spring left and it definitely felt more like summer. you what we need here? we need one of these on our beaches to give us a little bit of water. take a look at this. you saw this video earlier. this was out of australia of a water spouts and just amazing the amount of water that this things was picking up, too. and a lot of other foul out there, and any kind of creatures that live out there in the water and yes, literally dump them on land so you have heard of raining frogs and raining fish, that's how it happens. what a boom shot that is out there. the record at bwi, 98. they hit that risked 98 degrees so today will be an un, fishl record. the record dulles is 95. winds out of the north at 9 miles an hour and not enough of a breeze to cool you down. look at these temperatures, 95 in frederick and 95 in fredericksburg and 93 in leonardtown and you add in the humidity and you get the heat index and rung upward of 100 degrees and 102 in baltimore and 92347 quantico and 106 degrees down toward fredericksburg and that's why we have the heat advisory in effect for today and overnight and into the day tomorrow as well and a couple of things you need to be reminded about. always check on the elderly and a lot of times they do have not air conditioning and they just sit in those rooms and make sure you're checking in on the elderly and remember the pets as well. bring them inside and give them a little ac and drink plentied of water and help people around you do the same. no rain to talk about. we're not going see any rain over the next day or so. better chance of rain and the best chance of rain coming up on wednesday, but this is going to be a dry pattern. a little bit on the warm side over the next couple of days. no cloud cover from the great lakes down through portion of north carolina and we're not going see clouds overnight and into the day tomorrow either, frontal boundary, just to the north and watch which way this front goes, back to the north. high pressure dominating and we're going to stay very hot during the day tomorrow and actually a little bit more humid tomorrow. that's where we're going to see the problem with the heat index of 100 to 105 degrees during the afternoon. we will see a frontal boundary start to come down during the day wednesday and most of wednesday will be dry and there could be showers and thunderstorms late in the day, maybe at 6:00, 7:008:00, wednesday night and as this front moves on down, i do think we'll see a very nice end to the week and temperatures falling back down into the 80s on thursday and friday. mostly clear, hot and humid, and winds will be on the light side. tomorrow morning, mostly clear. humid once again with areas of fol fog, and that's around i-45 in the morning and you'll see and by 9:0010:00 you'll walk outside and you'll feel it. you'll start to feel the sweat building up your body. mostly sunny tomorrow afternoon with the heat advisory and with the heat index warmer than it was today at 1 thoun 105 degrees and actual temperatures, 90 to 95 and as we move on through the next couple of days and if we hit 92 on wednesday that will make it the first official heat wave of the season and 89 on thursday and then i think it looks like a fantastic day on friday and then we'll just call it a fantastic friday with a high temperature of 86 degrees and as we move on through the weekend, i think temperatures stay in the 80s with only a slight chance of a couple of showers so it looks like a fairly dry and fairly warm pattern a little bit more like summer than late spring. of course, coming up this friday, we'll be out in somebody's backyard. you love that picture. it's like the biggest picture ever. we're working on this, but we want to come to your backyard and do the weather live. this week we'll be in fairfax county, i memorial day baseball at president barack obama marked this memorial day with tributes to the nation's war dead. he spoke with arlington national cemetery. and placed a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns. it caused heat-related illnesses, half a dozen people including members of a marching band had to go to the hospital. others had to be treated as well. sarah palin and congresswoman michele bachmann spent this memorial day appearing to be campaigning for president, neither woman has yet declared herself a candidate, though, for the republican nomination. a deadly crash in loudoun county might have involved a distracted driver. that happened happened just before 7:00 on route 9 near daley farm lane. julie carey has more on the police efforts to step up enforcement on a busy road. >> reporter: a loudoun county deputy targeting aggressive drivers on route 9 trying to make sure there is not a repeat of what happened last night on this narrow, but busy road. a road that carries hundreds to the charlesestown casino. that's where a vienna couple was headed at 6:30 when a yaris plowed into their forerunner. virginia state police are looking into a warns report that the yaris driver who was killed was preoccupied with his cell phone just before the crash. this is the couple that survived in the forerunner. anna castro and jose castro rivas was wearing seat belts. castro got the call that her mother had been airlifted to a fairfax hospital with a broken ankeel. >> they got lucky because they had a bigger vehicle and i think that if they would have had a small irone, i don't know if i would be telling this story right now. castro's husband jose was treated and released early this morning, still very shaken and he didn't want to appear on camera, but with his step daughter translating, described the terrifying crash. >> remember, and i was driving and i was taking pictures of the scenery and she yelled at me saying lookout! >> within seconds, the vehicles collided. the couple was trapped and jose was eventually able to climb out a window and free his wife. the driver of the yaris, 31-year-old satish, died at the scene. the accident shows how dangerous texting while driving can be. >> this is something that shouldn't happen because you never know when somebody else is going to be distracted because of a cell phone and they're putting their life in danger and those around them. >> the stepped up enforcement by the loudoun county sheriff's department was scheduled to last through the end of the memorial day holiday. in view of the latest accident no viewiot whether that special enforcement might continue. near% val, julie carey, news 4. >> this is at least the second fatal accident on route 9 in recent months. three men were killed there back on christmas eve. a local pastor was killed when he lost control of his motor vibingel and hit a tree. that accident happened near mile marker 20 in triangle saturday afternoon. elija alexander bird was traveling southbound on a 2008 harley davidson motorcycle. police say speed may have been a factor in this crash. bird lived in dale city and was the pastor at open arms pentecostal free will baptist church in woodbridge. he was 59 years old. congress could take action to keep potentially dangerous rental cars off the road. new york senator chuck schumer bruced a bill that would stop congress -- involving recalled vehicles. he says rental agencies should be held to the same standards as dealerships which don't lease out cars until all potential hazards have been fixed. gasoline prices are going down and apparently will continue to do so. today the national average for a gallon of regular unlead side $3.78. that's down 6 cents from last week. here in the d.c. area, prices are still a bit higher than that. $3.85 a gallon in d.c. and that's still down a penny from yesterday and down 8 cents from last week. drivers say they're happy that prices are dropping, but they say they still got a long way to go. >> ecstatic because i'm a recent college grad and i don't have that much money to be spending for gas so when gas prices went down that added more money into my pocket for food, bills and what not. so -- >> aaa expects prices to keep dropping as the summer continues and possibly, they say to about $3.55 by july fourth and even $3.25 by mid-summer. they say that might >> sounds good. thank you, doug. singer sean kingston is in a hospital after an accident on miami beach. his watercraft hit the palm islands bridge yesterday evening. a female passenger was also hurt. kingston's publicist says he is now stabilized. the 21-year-old jamaican-american singer rose to fame with his 2007 hit "beautiful girls." medical experts are warning about the impact of a growing shortage of prescription drugs. experts say medication shortage is not a new concern, but they say it is getting worse. health care providers say more than 200 drugs are now in short supply. they affect things such as cancer care and heart surgery. doctors and patients are being forced to delay surgical procedures while hospitals hunt for substitutes. the shortages are attributed to recalls, production problems and fewer problems that make the same drug. lindsay is coming up next with our sports report. memorial day baseball, nats against the phillies and one of the toughest holes for the congressional u.s. open. >> maryland and virginia playing for all of the maefshls in the national what a joy to have this regional thing with maryland and virginia playing for the championships. >> and playing in baltimore and battling this intense heat. i don't know how the players felt about that, but this was a matchup that had such a great storyline no matter how it unfolded. the unseeded maryland terps have not won a championship since 1957. their opponent uva just five years fresh off of their last title win, but tom starcha had suspended colin brigs for side's game because of what he said were, quote, team matters. he scored five of uva's nine goals and led the caves to another national championship title. let's go to baltimore. >> clear the space and clear your hands every time! why not us?
