[laughter] well, shut the front door! good night, everyone. . this is 9news now. sweltering, blister, today s heat caused serious problems. many of those affected were at today s memorial day parade and kept emergency crews working non-stop. andrea mccarren live from northwest washington on the latest to what happened to all of those folks. andrea. reporter: even at 11:00, check out the temperature behind me. 86 degrees. earlier today it was hotter, more humid, and that made it dangerous for thousands in the parade. one by one marching band members were loaded on to stretchers and taken to area hospitals. didn t even have any symptoms and all of a sudden, boom, they re out. re ....

later. anita? all right, anny, thank you. now to the other top stories in d.c. how the oppressive heat disrupted memorial day parade ares for a lot of folks. in loudoun county, virginia,a deadly warning about distracted driving. one man is dead is that right. reporter: one man dead and two others in critical condition. police say it s all due to distracted driving. this is definitely a tragedy. my heart goes out to the families. reporter: virginia state police say a witness saw one of the drivers use a hand held device just moments before the crash. that driver, 36-year old died at the scene. in the other car were jose and his wife, anna castro. both are in critical condition. rout 9 is also known as charlestown pike. it s popular among commuters and people getting to and from the racetrack. the challenge you have, is you have a to-lane road, cars going opposite directions. there s little margin for error. i m armando trull in northwest d.c. where someon ....
hello, jim, not just people watching parade, but participants in the parade. you remember that a lot of these marching bands are high school students and they re wearing the heavy uniforms made out of wool, the hats and the bass drums and the tuba. we have a whole bunch of young people there just enjoying the cooling tower that the d.c. fire department has put up, trying to get everybody cooled off as they try to get everyone in a safe situation down here because it has been a situation where temperatures have reached very dangerous conditions. i am joined by pete perringer, d.c. fire and ems. can you tell us what the preparations were for heat and normally, i mean, this is like the fourth of july. it couldn t be 50 degrees and raining. liquid gold proved its worth, but we had a couple of cooling stations where the paid pa raid started. of course, they were staged and i don t know how long before the parade and by the time the parade ended at about three or four hours ....
