unaware they were the intended targets of a massive car bombing. 19-year-old mohammed osman mo h hammud triggered the bombing. the suspect believed it was a real device. >> reporter: court documents showed that the sting was in the months in the making. he told them that he had been drinking of a violent jihad since he was 15 years old. >> the individual that was arrested because he chose portland because it was the place where this stuff doesn't happen. >> reporter: while the bomb wasn't real, mohammed's intentions were real. he said he wanted whoever is attending that event to leave either dead or injure brian moore, nbc news washington. mohammed is expected to make his first court appearance monday. if convict ted, he faces life i prison. the united states and south koa are male students at the school on monday on school grounds in a stairway during the school day. six juveniles have been arrested since the incident was reported the daafter happened. still, there are some concerns that though much of the time that elapsed was on the thanksgiving holiday, no notification went out to parents. >> security has been among the concerns of the parents since the new salvation army did a lot for me in the past when i had three young kids. they helped me g furniture, pa i my electricity bill. they have been good for me. >> reporter: as she greets shoppers, some drop coins and cash into the ttle but some pass her by. according to salvation army reports, giving is way down in the national capital region, more than 30% down in the first 8 days of red kettleundraising compared tos la the year. so far, givers have dropped nearly $160,000 into the kettles. that's a $74,000 decrease. there has beenn 80% drop, more than $99,000 at giant stores after chain executives limite the days and hours bell-ringers could stand outside their stores this holiday season. >> we are looking at the economy as being one of the key factors involved. the start of
