>> reporter: reaction of a community that feels happy and in a certain way united by this historic day. as you know, the hispanic community is not a monolithic block. there are conservatives, democrats and republicans. i think every latino in this country has to feel proud. now they see latinos are on the radar screen even at the highest court of the land. after next year's census, i thick a lot of people will be surprised how many hispanics actually live and produce in this country. >> as you said in fairness to the latino community, they all don't think wh one mind. they are as varied as anyone else. a lot of republicans voted for sotomayor. will that shore up the republican vote in the latino community? what impact might that have for those republican senators? >> reporter: there are nine. i think the biggest surprise i had was john mccain voted against sotomayor. he never voted against a supreme court justice in the past. he, until his last election, was seen as one othe leaders of immigration reform in the country. obviously, he had to step back from that leadership as he assumed the republican nomination for the presidency. i think regardless of how you feel about how the outcome of the election last november, there is no doubt the overwhelming majority of latinos that supported barack obama helped him in no small way become the next president of the united states of america. the question is will this vote have a long-term implication and impact on latino voters come 2010 and further? it all depends on how i think members of congress and the senate deals with immigration reform with the health debate. with a whole lot of other issues that areffecting day in and day out the purse andonras tiof aspirations of latinos in this country. no different than anybody else. >> absolutely. an historic day. joe diaz beigar. one senator returned to the senate floor today to cast her vote for sotomayor after recovering from a bad ankle injury. she broke it in three places last month after slipping on stairs at her church. she underwent surgery july 27th and has been in physical therapy since. esh she reiterated her support. good evening, bob ryan, form center 4. a lot of clouds and a little bit of rain around here. i think we've got delightful air coming in for one day. right now in washington here 78 degrees. u see all we had was 0.04 inches of rain. it continues in salisbury and the beach areas. that area of low pressure talked about yesterday is moving off. clear as we go through the nighttime hours. really delightful day for the now almost middle of august. a refreshing day. heat will be back. also beach and voting. everybody heading out to the beaches tomorrow. i'll join new a couple of minutes. > we have breaking news tonight from the entertainment world. john hughes died suddenly of a heart attack while taking a walk in new york city this afternoon. among hughes' many credits, "the breakfast club," and "ferris buhler's day off" and "home alone." prince william county pice respond to claims they used excessive force when they used a stun gun to subdue a man at a baptism. maker renovations for the upcoming school year. >> surprising information about the effectiveness of a rapid swine flu test. controversy over the latest creation of a spanish toy be real, learn to be emotional. >> video from youtube of the gunman who shot a dozen women before killing himself at a pittsburgh fitness center. george sodini wrote a rambling blog to vent his frustration of not being able to connect with women. it showed mounting anger over loneliness and detailed his deadly plan. three of the women shot tuesday night were killed. minutes before he opened fire he made a cell phone call to his mother. they won't reveal what he said during that conversation. a hacker attacked a popular social networking service thursday morning and no one was able to tweet a thing about it. twitter experienced an outage at about 9:00 a.m. because of a denial of service attack which hackers overwhelm website servers with communication requests preventing legitimate traffic from getting through. twitter status blog reported the site is back up, but advised users might experience longer load times, slow speeds and time-outs until the service is back at almost 100%. facebook also seemed to be having trouble and is investigating. how reliable is the test for swine flu?
