On a sunday when we have big political news as well as breaking weather stories. Yeah, look at the shots of vehicles stuck in the mud in california after a huge rainstorm. That brought floods, road collapses, and several deaths. And now, a second storm is moving in. We mentioned rob is back with us. Hes just back from the storm zone. Hell have the forecast in a few minutes. We begin with president trump, striving to restore order to an administration that has dealt with plenty of turmoil. At his private resort in palm beach today, the president will be interviewing at least four candidates to be his new National Security adviser after he fire his first appointee and the second choice declined the job. Hes trying to revert to campaign mode. He held a Campaign Rally. A bona fide Campaign Rally on saturday in florida. Clearly luxuriating in the adulation of the large and enthusiastic crowd there with air force one right there in the background. 9,000 attending the rally. Well, the president s weekend here in florida has been a sharp contrast to his turbulent week in washington. The president turning to campaigning to get a boost from his supporters. While hes facing cheering fans, many of his gop colleagues are facing angry voters at town halls across the country. This is a state where we all had great victory together. Reporter back on the trail and back in his element. Just 30 days into his presidency, donald trump debuting his 2020 campaign in florida. I want to be among my friends and among the people. Reporter it looked a lot like 2016. The same Campaign Play list. The familiar signs. And a supportive crowd. Its about 4 00 in the morning, and my goal was completed. Im the first one on line. With all the talk of cracking down on immigration, were seeing a dramatic increase in the number of people trying to cross the border into canada. Were watching scenes of immigrants and their families, with young children, fleeing the u. S. , crossing illegally, all hoping to begin the process of emigrating there as refugees. And abcs eva pilgrim is at a Border Crossing for us this morning in upstate new york. Reporter dan and paula, this is one of the crossings people have been using illegally. You can see here the road is closed. Just on the other side, the Royal Canadian Border Patrol is waiting for anyone that might come this way. There have been so many people using this to cross into canada, they have actually carved out a path right here in the snow. Its very painful. Reporter this morning, immigrants in limbo, desperately fleeing to the north. Families with small children making the trek on foot in the snow, dragging everything they own. Canadian Border Police making arrests. But assisting those who make a refugee claim. We made it. And were happy with that. Reporter the number of Asylum Seekers illegally crossing along the quebec border skyrocketing. In january, 452 incidents. An increase of 230 above the same month in 2016. All our resources are pretty much booked. Theres almost no space left. Reporter the influx really picking up in november. Election night, the canadian immigration website crashing. Now, uncertainty across the country, fueling fear after recent immigration raids and continued debate over the president s executive order banning refugees from seven majority muslim countries. Well never be divided. Reporter large pro immigration rallies in texas. And in new mexico. Here in upstate new york, a steady stream of people using these closed roads to illegally cross into canada. Canada allowed nearly 40,000 Syrian Refugees into their country in the past year. In a joint news conference, with president trump, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promising that canada will remain open. We continue to pursue our policies of openness without compromising security. Reporter so far this weekend, immigration lawyers say there have been a steady stream of people crossing into canada. They say it does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Dan and paula . Lets start with the president s meetings today with the potential National Security advisers. Why has this job been so hard for donald trump to fill . The biggest problem is he had a guy he wanted for the job. He mentioned it at his press conference on thursday. Admiral bob harward. And he said he didnt want to take the job. He said it was personal reasons. Theres also certainly concern about the chaos at the white house. Another person he was looking at, david petraeus, he pulled himself out because he was concerned about whether or not he would be able to appoint his own staff at the National Security council. And i gotta tell you. Theres a lot of talk of basically loyalty oaths that you have to take to be in this administration. There was somebody in a senior position at the department of housing and urban development who was walked out after getting the job because it had been found out he had written things, said things critical of donald trump during the campaign. And you talk about possible chaos at the white house. We have seen discontent and chaos to say the least at the town halls across the country. Many voicing concerns about the trump administrations connections with russia. So whats next in the congressional investigation into this matter . You have the house and Senate Intelligence communities looking into this. The investigation that seems particularly serious is the one in the Senate Intelligence committee. One challenge, those committees do much of their work behind closed doors because they deal with so much classified information. So its still up clear how much of this investigation will be in the public where well all see it. Lets talk about the rally yesterday. Where we saw the president , as i said before, really, clearly enjoying his time with his supporters. He was apparently trying to change the subject after all of the turmoil we have seen in the last couple of weeks in washington. Do you think he succeeded . Well, i dont know about that, dan. I think theres another reason for this. Certainly, he wanted to change the subject. Certainly he wanted to get on a more positive note here. But theres also a personal psychological thing going on with the president. He loves this stuff. He gets energized by it. And, you know, the white house can be an isolating, maybe even lonely place, especially when everybody outside in washington seems to be out to get you. There he is, back in campaign mode. Among adoring fans. I think it was a part about for his own for himself, getting the mojo back to a degree. It looks like on that front at least he succeeded. Yes, i think so. Residents are cleaning up after a storm caused a devastating punch. Creating widespread flooding and property damage. The storm has been linked to the death of at least five people. Now the state is bracing itself for round two. Marci gonzalez joins us now from San Bernardino county with the very latest. Good morning, marci. Reporter good morning, paula. Some of the damage theyre already dealing with is pretty astou astounding. Here you can see where part of major freeway this is interstate 15, washed away in the storm. Those are chunks of the roadway down in the river bed. Right now, there is a team up there busy making repairs. This morning, crews in hardhit california scrambling to clean up and get prepared. As another storm gets ready to strike. The sacramento area inundated. Interstates turning into rivers. And in maxwell, the Sheriffs Department issuing new voluntary evacuation orders as rising water takes over the town. Farther south, a muddy mess in malibu this weekend. This highway forced to close. In other parts of the state, the storm that hit friday dumping up to five inches of rain causing damaging mudslides, leaving cars, semis, tractor trailers stuck. The downpours causing this freeway to crumble in San Bernardino county taking this fire truck with it. And crews worked saturday afternoon using heavy machinery to remove that fire truck from the river bed below. The damage now estimated at 3 million just from that road collapse. Cleanup as more than 30,000 customers are still without power. Statewide, the death toll from the storm now rising to at least five. While in fresno, crews scrambling to plug more than a dozen leaks in city levees, before theyre hit with a second round of torrential rain today. The race is on along this freeway. Despite all the damage, theyre hoping to have most of the lanes of traffic open in time for the monday morning commute. Dan . That is a big goal. Lets hope they succeed. The next storm is pointed right at northern and central california. We have flood watches and warnings happening. The radar, seattle and San Francisco rains. But the core of the heaviest rains begin tonight. And splash all through tomorrow. Were looking at two, three, four, maybe five inches of additional rainfall over saturated ground. Yes, this mansion fire could be seen for more than seven miles away. Dozens of firefighters coming out to combat this inferno. At times, struggling for access to water. This morning, investigators trying to determine the cause of this blaze at a multimillion dollar mansion in the d. C. Area. Within minutes, fully engulfed. Towers of flames shooting high above the home. The thick black plume of smoke visible for miles. This mansion a mile from cia headquarters, reportedly occupied by Embassy Staff of the united arab emirates. It was amazing how quickly it spread throughout the house. They were, you know, very shaken. Oh, my gosh. Reporter the call for help going out just before 8 00 a. M. Saturday morning. By the time firefighters arrived the fire has gone through the roof. Sounds like propane let loose through the house. Reporter walls collapsing. Forcing firefighters out of the home. This will be a defensive operation. Reporter efforts to extinguish the flames hindered by limited access to water. And hydrants. I have no water. Unable to supply water at this time. Im going to have to shut you down until i get water. Reporter the fire burning for three hours. Gutting the 6,000squarefoot home. The people inside and two dogs escaping safely. When listening to the radio communications, there was a hydrant less than a quarter of a mile from the home. There may have been difficulty getting the tankers positioned nearby. But with propane tank explosions, this fire was burning hot and fast. The large home is a total loss. Paula . Dan . So frustrating for the firefighters. You can hear it in their voices. Absolutely. Iraqi troops started moving on the western part of the city following u. S. Air strikes. Mosul is the last isis stronghold iniraq. Government forces took the eastern side of that city last month. Officials say this new fight may prove to be more difficult. More breaking news. Another new twist in the assassination of the brother of north Korean Leader kim jongun. Malaysian police say theyre now looking for four more suspects in the death of kim jongnam. Police have arrested several people, including a woman who says she was tricked into taking part in that murder. And norma mccorvey, the anonymous plaintiff in the historic roe v. Wade case legalizing abortion, has died. She was unable to get an abortion back in 1970 in texas. She never did have an abortion and didnt participate in the legal battle. Later, she went to being a vehement abortion foe. She was 69 years of age. And the blind sheikh has died in a federal prison. In north carolina, where he was serving a life sentence for plotting to launch terrorist attacks in the u. S. The man, an egyptian, was convicted of plotting a war of you are bar terrorism. A group of middle School Students in florida in serious trouble, after one of them threw a piece of wood at the president s motor cade on friday. Investigators say one of the kids confessed and implicated four others. Police say charges will be filed against these children. A 75yearold woman back on dry land this morning, after being plucked off a cruise ship by a coast guard helicopter on saturday. Video shows the delicate and dangerous rescue operation about 100 miles off the coast of north carolina. The coast guard says the woman was in diabetic shock. According to local reports, she is expected to be okay. Great. They do heroic work. They do. Were grateful shes okay. And were grateful for the harrowing work they do on a daily basis, saving upwards of ten lives every day. So our thanks go out to the coast guard this morning. We want to turn to a murder mystery still unsolved after two years. Police in scottsdale, arizona, not giving up the hunt for Allison Feldmans killer. As her family marks two years since she died. And ron is on that story. Hey, ron. Reporter hey, dan. Well, allisons family is not giving up hope that her killer be found, this as police try to find a key clue. Taking an unusual step in their investigation. Scottsdale, arizona, detectives going door to door. Collecting dna samples in their search for the killer responsible for Allison Feldmans murder two years ago. Ive lost sleep over, sure. Reporter defective john heindelman has been investigating allisons slaying from the very beginning. A case with no arrests and no suspects. But one key piece of evidence. The killers dna. This person could be incarcerated in another state that we just havent figured that out yet. It could be somebody thats never been arrested. It could be somebody thats only arrested for a misdemeanor. Reporter with no dna match in the database, Scottsdale Police are asking members of the community to voluntarily submit a sample of their dna. At this point, its used as a ruleout method as well as this could be our person. Reporter the request raising legal concerns by some. This, to me, is a textbook random and arbitrary search that is unconstitutional and unlawful. Reporter for feldmans loved ones, its a welcome sign that police are not letting her case go cold. Theyve been true workers in trying to find her killer. Reporter the Family Gathering at a vigil friday to mark the twoyear anniversary of the 31yearolds slaying. Its been two years since the last time i spoke to my best friend. But we will get justice. Investigators doing these dna comparisons because they collected a sample from the person they suspect is the killer who they say was cut in the act of the crime. Theyre asking neighbors for those samples because they believe Allison Feldman may have known her killer. Theres a 10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, a break in this case.
