Well not get the bulls eye. Storm tracker 6 double scan showing most of our region just dealing with light snow right now. However we do have a pocket of some heavier snow in parts of lancaster and Chester County. You can see that area of purple right north of route 41. Thats an area of some steadier heavier snow between route 30 and route 10 and its just kind of sitting there. This system will really be getting cranked up in the overnight hours and thats when well see the potential for the heavy accumulating snow. That being said, i want to share this photo that was tweeted to me from marisa from lancaster, pennsylvania. This is route 30 taking taken about a half hour ago. You can see how Road Conditions are going downhill. So for this evening as we get the snow showers, you do want to be careful but between about 9 oclock and 10 oclock, now until 10 oclock tonight were looking at for the most part light snow showers. Be careful for some slick spots and especially the bridges and the overpasses and the surfaces that are untreated. But that storm system will really get cracked up in the overnight hours. A much bider view on Storm Tracker 6 live double scan slowing what im tracking, low pressure thats off the eastern seaboard, its northeast of cape hatteras. It is deepening that means its strengthening very quickly. It will be rolling up the eastern seaboard and if you look right here you see the bands of some heavy snow across boston, across long island. They will start to pivot back into our region later on tonight and through the day tomorrow. This really tells the story. Once again its all but location. We have Winter Weather advisories in effect for our far western suburbs. This area will not be seeing that heavy accumulation. We have winter storm warnings in effect for the bulk of the viewing area including philadelphia and trenton and millville where the snow will begin to pile up tonight but the blizzard warnings in effect for parts of ocean county monmouth counties and into long island and new england. That will get really the hit the full impact of that storm system but the ingredients are all there. Its how they come together that will determine what we get. For details on that lets head over to add cam joseph. Adam. They have to come together perfectly at the right time overnight tonight but we do see that arctic air is in place. This wasnt here the last go round when we talked about no strong High Pressure supplying cold air for a storm. This go round it is different its only 10 in burlington, 28 in boston and philadelphia right now just 27 degrees. But that track is key as to exactly how fast this storm explodes to our east. It deepens rapidly and just how far to the east or how far to the west it will start to stall and slow down but will it be too far away from us to wrap a lot of those bands in . There is what we have to watch overnight tonight and any shift in the track will bring big changes to the forecast late tonight. So, as we take a look at the time line between now and 10 oclock, again just some light snow showers around and if you see the snow showers expect the roads to be slick. Between 10 oclock tonight and 10 oclock tomorrow morning that is our opportunity as that storm passes by and develops to give us even more significant travel with slick spots and snow covered roads and potential for that heavy snow especially east of philadelphia and then between 10 oclock tomorrow morning and 2 00 p. M. , thats when the snow tapers from the southwest to the north and east. From lancaster to lakehurst thats about 120 miles. Were going see a difference between as low as 3inches and as high as 18inches in our viewing area. That is a large span of very low totals to high totals and again, any shift could really throw these numbers off this way or that way but right now were going to go with reading, wilmington, dover all points west three to six. The greater philadelphia area, lehigh valley, southern new jersey, six to 10. 10 to 14 around trenton to chatsworth manahawkin and then 1418 before those blizzard warnings are in effect. Meteorologist cecily tynan comes back shell break this down even further for you monica and also talk about the rest of the week in that sevenday forecast. Thanks adam. Lets head to the jersey shore and dann cuellar live in Atlantic City tonight. Hi dan. Reporter hi, monica. It has been snowing and sleeting in Atlantic City over the last hour. The wind gusts have been picking up. Weve clocked gusts 20 miles an hour. Theres an inspector from military affairs taking down those flags which have been taking a beating in the last hour. Mayor don guardian says theyve been closely monitoring weather reports which vary from 4inches to over a foot of snow here in Atlantic City. Overall he says they are taking no chances, theyre preparing for the worst. If it slows down were going get walloped. If not then were still going to prepare for several inches. So, i think right now were thinking six to eight teen inches but were going to be prepared for the worst. Our Police Department has brought in two live transport that are usually used by the army. Youll recognize them as Army Vehicles and theyre good for a foot or 2 feet of water in the event we need to move people for emergency. Reporter back live here on the boardwalk which as you can see is a ghost town, theyre concerned about high tide as you heard the mayor was talking about those personnel vehicles. Theyre concerned about the tide coming in and then freezing up and not being able to go back out which is why those personnel carriers will come in handy. Well be here through the night with live reports. For now back to you guys, back into the studio. Dan thank you. Kenneth moton is live from manayunk tonight and kenneth the mayor of philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter had strict warnings for residents in the city today. Reporter thats right, rick. The snow emergency goes into effect in less than an hour, so the signs are up right now notifying people that places like main street in manayunk here is a snow emergency route. Dont park here. Right now the streets are looking okay in this section of the city but we know thats about to change. Its no secret during or even after a snowstorm the hills of manayunk arent the best for travel. Slipping and sliding patches of ice, you know, all over the place. Reporter you dont want anything to do with that. Nothing to do with that. Reporter the Streets Department spent the day treating streets throughout the city but the tough work will come during and after that major blast of winter. Strong winds and plummeting temperatures are expected to deeply impact the citys snow fighting efforts. So, with that snow emergency in effect starting at 6 00 p. M. Comes a serious warning from mayor Michael Nutter. There will be heavy continued, strict and severe enforcement on our snow emergency routes. Reporter vehicles must be removed from all snow emergency routes like broad street before 6 00 p. M. Or owners will be ticketed and towed. This is serious business. Your car your vehicles parked on a snow emergency route while our Public Employees are out fighting this storm is disrespectful to their work. Reporter in manayunk we found people picking up last minute supplies. They say its time to hunker down. Youre not going to try to drive, no, not at all. I dont think cabs are going to take people back and forth you have to kind of settle in and stay where youre going to be or where youre okay being for the next two days. Reporter not a bad plan. The city is reminding Vehicle Owners that there are garages offering a five dollars flat rate for parking. You can mind list on our web site, six 6abc. Com. Time now for a check of our action news traffic report right now. Matt pelman in the traffic center. Its been a long day and an even longer night perhaps. Were okay being here for the next few nights right i hope so. Good evening rick and monica. This evening youre going the make it home okay but the snow is coming down and it is slowing here on 422 westbound a little bit of slush out there as well. Those are our sl words slow going from the saint gabes curve. Weve been talking about the slow speeds and slushy conditions on the 30 bypass through downingtown. Just to the north of that theres a crash on the pennsylvania turnpike eastbound approaching the downingtown interchange with some slowing headed toward that accident scene as well. In Upper Providence delco watch out for a wreck along dog kennel road by rose tree park. In New Castle County a downed tree closing barley mill road. Stay on Lancaster Pike 48. A crash on wilmington minor 141 southbound side approaching james. As far as dart goes theyre run on a normal schedule tomorrow but expect delays. Doing fine right now. Njt already has 10 to 15 minute delays. Theyre cross honoring tickets and then tonight at 8 oclock all new Jersey Transit service will be suspended for an indefinite amount of time. Again, that goes into effect at 8 oclock tonight. Patco and amtrak on modified schedule. Septa regional rails running on normal schedules but saturday schedules tomorrow. Thats right, especially areas to the north and east. Storm tracker 6 live double scan showing we have a few snow showers developing right now. The main event is really later on tonight. As we zoom down to the south dover right now through fortescue really the mouth of the delaware bay were seeing some light snow showers, a little bit of mixing in with some rain. Also beginning to develop near salem and newark delaware. This was the area i showed you at the top of the show near coatesville, route 41, 322 thats the heavier burst of snow showers. Just kind of sitting there but this storm system will really get cranking up later tonight and thats when everything will start to develop and get a lot heavier. But were live right now taking a look honeybrook pennsylvania in Chester County where the snow is falling already coating the ground. Tonight most of the roads are just wet but the Road Conditions will be deteriorating late tonight and early tomorrow morning. One thing you need for big snowstorm, you need cold air and we have plenty of it. Allentown its 19 degrees, philadelphia 27, millville 29, trenton 23 and reading currently 22 degrees. And its beginning to get windy. Winds out of the northeast makes sense noreaster. 32 end in trenton and 21 in wilmington so the wind chills are generally in the teens across most of our viewing area. Allentown the wind chill, though, has dropped down to 4 degrees so its certainly cold enough for snow. This is something we dont show on action news very often. This is the water vapor imagery and this shows at 5 oclock in the morning you see just a little bit of the action with the water vapor off the coast but look at what happens between then and now. You can see how this moisture is really blossoming. Youll notice, too how it begins to pivot. Thats whats called a negative tilt in the trough and that is what will steer that low pressure up the eastern seaboard and keep it from just heading out to sea. You can also see how its directed towards new england and that is really the area thats going to get buried with some heavy snow and blizzard conditions. So, future tracker showing around 11 oclock tonight, this is when well see the bands of the heavier snow begin to develop across new england and begin to work to the south and the west. So trenton around 11 oclock some heavy bands of snow and theyll begin to also work into our western suburbs. By 6 oclock tomorrow morning we are really in the heart of it especially east of philadelphia. Its still falling at lunchtime. Then the snowfall cuts off pretty quickly in the afternoon as that low pressure continues to roll away from us. Future tracker showing wind gusts a big part of it. By 8 oclock wind gusts Atlantic City more than 40 miles an hour. Winds will cause problems at the shore. There is moderate coastal flooding expected between high tide and 2 oclock in the morning, wind gusts up to 45 miles an hour. That could bring some limbs down, cause Power Outages and also this is a very light fluffy snow. Blowing and drifting snow will be a concern with reduced visibilities. So expected snowfall, the northwest suburbs 3 to 6 inches, youre missing out on the bulk of this. Six to 10 around philadelphia into south jersey. 10 to 14 interior south jersey and then parts of ocean and Monmouth County 14 to 18inches of snow. Bear in mind if that track changes even a little bit that will have a big impact on the numbers. Ill have an update on action news at 11 00 but the five day at 5 00 showing that morning snow the wind 30 degrees. Look what happens behind it. 29 degrees on wednesday. Thursday increasing clouds, 32. Some snow showers thursday night into friday morning. 38 degrees. And saturday the high only 26 degrees. Well let you know if it warms up at all coming up in the full accuweather 7day forecast. All right. Great skiing weather but not for you cecily. No, its not. Stay off the slopes, try to get a little break. You sit out. Action news at 5 00 continues with more coverage on our noreaster when we come right back. Stay with us. Our coverage of the the approaching noreaster continues tonight. Communities have declared snow emergencies ahead of what accuweather is predicting to be a very busy overnight into tuesday. Public transit and Philadelphia International airport is also being impacted by the approaching storm and there are also several School Closings posted for tomorrow. Theyre running at the bottom of your screen. New jersey is now already under a state of emergency in part due to a blizzard warning that was posted for ocean and monmouth counties. Governor Chris Christie made that declaration earlier today. State offices and schools dismissed early. They will likely remain closed in those two places tomorrow. Drivers are umped to stay off the roads in jersey unless absolutely necessary. Residents in the philadelphia region use the calm before the storm to clear snow from driveways and sidewalks. Penndot is following suit. Crews will work around the clock treating roads with salt and when its all over the plowing operations will begin. Delaware folks stocked up on essentials during the calm before the storm as well. Action news at an acme here in wilmington. Milk frozen food, vegetables that were that baskets along with isnt he shovels and sidewalk salt. We have live team coverage. Reporter david henry standing by in trenton are you preparations in the garden state. Matt pelman has Road Conditions but first lets begin this half hour with meteorologist adam joseph. As we take a look at live double scan we have a few snow showers around the region especially through Chester County, Montgomery County thats coating the ground in spots but as we take a look at the radar its beginning to fill into the south and east of philadelphia. The low is taking shape just to the east of the shore line of new jersey and near the delmarva and as we take a look at the radar and put on the warning mode here for you on double scan live youll see that winter storm warnings are in effect from philadelphia, east into southern new jersey, right on the brink of new york city and thats where you begin with blizzard warnings for ocean county in new jersey, new york city, all of southern new england for the shores of connecticut, rhode island cape cod and up to the shore line of eastern maine. That is where they will take the brunt of this particular noreaster as it slows and throws a lot of moisture into southern new england. That is where they could see up to 2 feet, a large area, anywhere from bangor maine down to the edge of new york city and were on the fringe of the storm as it develops to our north and east. So we will see some snow but were not going to get the brunt of the storm or those blizzard conditions theyre expecting in southern new england. Nonetheless, as that low develops to our east overnight tonight, the winds will howl out of the northeasterly direction which typically batters our shore and that will be the case again tonight. So high tide, between midnight and 2 00 a. M. , thats when the winds will crank up the most so were expecting moderate tidal flooding that is from 11 oclock tonight through 7 oclock tomorrow morning. When i come back well talk about really the fine tuned effect of the storm and how fickle it will be and those snowfall totals coming up in the full accuweather 7day. Thank you adam. Lets take a live look at conditions along i95 north and southbound right here near penns landing and as you can tell traffic is moving along at a pretty good clip right now, but travel conditions will deteriorate as the storm continues to come closer into our region. Visibility will be a problem as well. But right now traffic is moving without any problems here on i95 near penns landing and of course well get an update on the travel situation from matt pelman in just a few moments. Right now youre taking a live look at Road Conditions through our live mobile6 camera as it rolls along westbound on route 70 here in new jersey and again roads seem to be just wet maybe a little bit of snow buildup but not impacting traffic at this point. And good news there but thats going to change of course later this evening and tomorrow. South jersey is going to be among the hardest hit regions so well keep an eye on it for you, make sure you have the very latest. Matt pelman with the very latest in our traffic center. How we looking matt. You know this evening guys, were going to be all right. Just hang in there. Tonights going to be fine. Tomorrow might be a little bit of a different story but this evening here and around the city most of our roadways are damp at worst or even dry. As you get farther north and farther west youre seeing some slushy conditions on some of the highways but were also seeing along 95 a broken down vehicle, northbound side by girard avenue taking out the right lane. Police on the scene causing extra slowing as you come out of center city this afternoon. But in the downingtown area, yes, some slushy conditions leading to really slow speeds on the westbound 30 bypass and now on business 30 lincoln highway, theres a crash just to the west of downingtown so do watch out, it is slippery out in this neck of the woods. Also had a crash on the turnpike eastbound approaching downingtown. Looks like the speeds through there are starting to pick up. In delaware a downed tree in New Castle County blocking off barley mill road. Stay down on Lancaster Pike instead. Wilmington manor crash along 141 southbound direction approaching james street. Camera time here in bellmawr camden county. This is the 42 freeway. Again mostly dry at this point. Youre looking okay here on 42. On the new jersey turnpike speed restrictions are up now 45 Miles Per Hour is all youre supposed to be doing in each direction even though in some spots like here a lot of the roads are mostly dry. On the mass transit front njt okay right now just some 10 to 15 minute delays. Its 8 oclock tonight when we have our final departures and then we expect service to remain suspended on new Jersey Transit throughout the day tomorrow. Well check it again rick and monica coming up at 6 oclock. All right. Thank you, matt. Now lets take a live picture from harrisburg where pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf is holding a press conference right now to talk about the states preparation for the storm. Hes issuing a disaster emergency proclamation and that will clear up resources for communities expecting the most snowfall in our area. Wolf says pennsylvania is also prepared to help other states as well. In addition were working closely with counterparts in other states. As i say some of the other states i think are going to get hit more harder than we are. But were working with them and thats what we do as pennsylvaniaians. We obviously take care of ourselves but were also good neighbors. Of course the new governor just sworn into office several days ago. Were continuing to stream his News Conference from harrisburg on the noreaster. Thats live on our web site right now at 6abc. Com. State of delaware is on the western edge of the storm meaning snow totals will be less in the first state but deldot still not taking any chances. Crews rolled in and out of the maintenance yard here in christiana filling up with salt. If we get whats forecast, it will be well be plowing through the night and dealing with things pretty much all day tomorrow and also dealing with drifting issues as we continue to clean up. Officials are also asking drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Of course that gives crews an easier chance to clear the snow. And like many other students in our area, kids with the Red Clay School district in delaware were let out of school early today. Buses and parents lined up to get their youngsters home in plenty of time before the very heavy snow starts falling. All right well, action News Reporter david henry live in trenton, new jersey, tonight and david of course a mass exodus from the capitol city after governor christie closed state offices ahead of the storm today. Reporter yeah, thats right, rick, nobody here but us chickens. The state workers cleared out about four hours ago. The city of trenton says it is preparing for up to 20inches of snowfall but the question now is how ready are we . Were ready to hunker down for the night if we need tomorrow. The flurries throughout the day were just a taste of whats to come. Cleaning the car was a breeze compared to the back breaking work ahead. People planned ahead stocking up over the weekend. The salt, more salt, more water, more, you know, food, junk food, yeah, junk food fix. Reporter thats was need to survive. Yeah. Reporter state workers were sent home around 1 00 this afternoon clogging the roads with an early rush hour. The city is trying to get everyone offer the roads earlier to give road crews the room to move. Mayor jackson is urging residents to move their cars before the heavy stuff hits. Once the snow gets around three to 4inches they would put their cars in Neighborhood School parking lots that will be opened to them so that we can plow the street from can you shall to curb. Reporter new Jersey Transit will slut down at 8 oclock tonight which has people moving up their travel plans. Willy sturgis wishes he had stayed put. Where are you coming from. Im coming from fort myers florida. Reporter why did you do that . [laughter] thats what my family said, are you sure you want to go back there. Im like yeah, thats where i live. Its my home here. Heres melissa on whats happening in our area. All right, melissa whats happening . Sharrie we are anticipating the snow showers and the heavy snow that comes in later on tonight. So i just want to show you the grassy coating we picked up early today. You can see light fluffy stuff on the grass from the clipper system that moved through earlier today. But outside we have snow showers overhead. The main event moves in as we get into the rest of tonight and into tuesday. The roads are mainly wet so youre not going to have any issues on the road until that storm system strengthens off the coast and works its way eastward. The secondary roads are going to be an issue. As you look over and pan over to my left, the sidewalks are definitely untreated on the other side of the sidewalk. Give yourself extra time especially as this storm system moves through. Temperatures sharrie only in the lower 20s which means we have wind chills in the lower teens and these numbers will keep on crashing as that cold air rushes southward in anticipation of the snowstorm on the way later on tonight. Thats the very latest on monument road. Ill send it back inside to you. All right, melissa, thank you. All right, thank you sharrie. Of course it is a necessity every time it snows, you have to shovel and clear your sidewalks and driveways. Have to do it every time and there are things you need to do to keep in mind to make sure are you shoveling the right way. For instance, shoveling can be more strenuous to the heart than being on a treadmill actually so to reduce your risk of injury do not shovel first thing in the morning. Thats when more heart attacks occur apparently. Heavy lifting and cold morning air are a dangerous mix. Also do not eat a heavy meal just beforehand or drink coffee or smoke. Those things spike your Blood Pressure and your heart rate. But do warm up before you start shoveling. You can walk around or march in place for several minutes. Time to get another look at the al important snowy accuweather forecast with adam. Yeah and this storm is going to be very fickle and very hard to fine tune at the very end. Something were conning to track and follow as we go through the evening hours. As we take a look at double scan live radar right now were dealing with light snow showers in the western suburbs and south of wilmington butter butter but east of philadelphia towards the coast very little going on right now. We start into delaware and you can see a mixture from smyrna with some light snow showers and then sleet pellets in dover. Get down to milford where the temperatures are still too warm to support frozen precipitation in the form of light rain but were seeing the snow and sleet. It is starting to accumulate on some of the roadway surfaces the sidewalks so be cautious there. Also in the western suburbs of philadelphia, Chester County, Lancaster County there was a batch of snow that developed just to the north and west of chadds ford. Thats pushing to the west of 222 now but some slick spots in parts of montgomery, chester, Lancaster County and also southern parts of berks county so if youre heading out this evening its very scattered with these snow showers but if you see them, take it slow. In fact, we got a picture into our twitter page, were on twitter on facebook please follow us throughout the storm for any updates this evening. This is if downingtown and you can see just a light coating of snow fell this afternoon. Not a whole lot so far. As we look at the temperatures, it is plenty cold. 27 in philadelphia, 19 allentown, 24 in trenton. You factor in that northeasterly wind at speeds of 17 in allentown, 22 in philadelphia, 20 at the airport in Atlantic City, that truly drops the wind chill. In fact, feels like seven in allentown, 13 in philadelphia, 18 in millville and right now the wind chills at the shore only 20 to 25 degrees. As we look at satellite and radar, what makes this forecast so complicated is that were not tracking a storm thats already developed with all the moisture pulling up from the south. Were waiting for this storm to blossom and most of the time when they blossom to our east it is too late for us to get a lot of snow out of the storm. That is why new england will take the brunt of it cause its a little too late for us but as it develops and deepens overnight east of Atlantic City it should throw some of that moisture back in off of the ocean by 11 oclock tonight overspreading philadelphia late tonight early tomorrow morning. How far west, thats the question. There will be a sharp cutoff of where its snowing and where its not snowing tomorrow morning. Continues north and east at 10 oclock tomorrow morning and then by 2 00 it is pretty much out of here. And as you take a look at the expected snowfall totals, three to six is what we have in those far northwestern suburbs, all of delaware right now, philadelphia, Allentown Glassboro Millville to the south six to 10inches. 10 to 14 through Burlington County northern Atlantic County and where the blizzard warnings are in effect for northern eastern parts of monmouth and ocean county 14 to 18inches of snow but something to keep in mind here. When youre talking about lancaster our western viewing area, lakehurst at the shore eastern viewing area thats 120 miles and youre talking about a spread of three to 18inches in that 120 miles and as this storm is now just getting going any minor shift on its intensity on its traffic could bring a major change to that forecast overnight tonight and that is why be a little wary because the storm has yet to really blossom. 31 miles an hour the wind gust in philadelphia, 34 in Atlantic City. That continues to have those speeds right through 11 oclock tonight. So coastal concerns will be coastal flooding at the times of high tide around midnight tonight. Wind gusts 45 miles an hour. Blowing and drifting snow because the snow will be so fluffy in nature, its very light, not that heavy wet snow because those temperatures are now back into the 20s. The exclusive accuweather 7day forecast, morning snow tomorrow afternoon clouds and windy 30 degrees. Improving conditions tomorrow afternoon. Then brisk and cold, a bright day on wednesday at 29. Clouds build thursday, 32. Could be a few light snow showers early on friday morning before a very cold weekend sets up with highs just in the 20s. And another round of snow showers could be possible early on monday morning so right now what were doing is now well say where are you blossoming, where are you developing. You saw. Quite a workout.
