East. We cant sit back here and just pretend were the goalie and well stop all of the shots. Reporter the bombings followed the arrest of the main suspect from novembers terror attacks in paris. He was taken into custody alive in belgium four days ago. Unclear if this is related to that arrest. Alison what a terrifying day. Lets get over to lisa evers in times square with more on how new york city is responding to the attacks. Reporter the Police Commissioner is telling us theres no specific threat against new york city, but the nypd is not taking any chances. They are beefing up patrols and their presence and working closely with local and federal Law Enforcement partners to protect the city against any terror threats. Mayor de blasio and Police Commissioner bratton walked out of nypds times square substation for a briefing on the latest security measures. Going about their business, people in the city knowing the nypd has their back and understanding how important it is to never let the terrorists dominate us or influence us, but in fact to stand up for our way of life. Reporter police estimate nearly half a Million People use the subway corridor in times square every day with a location remaining a top terror target. Now 50 Police Officers will be dedicated to blanketing the area a with regular coverage underground in addition to high visibility on the streets. Its about confidence, the idea that the public can feel confident in the city, that we will do everything to try and occurring. Reporter he says the nypd is constantly monitoring counterterrorism methods and doing drills so they can quickly mobilize additional Police Officers when they feel necessary. And everyone in new york city is noticing the enhanced security. What you saw this morning and throughout the day, if you were of force on the part of the nypd. What you saw if you were a citizen or commuter today was a large sign of reassurance and protection. Protection. Reporter the mayor is telling us the nypd has thwarted about 20 terror plots since 9 11 and that it is still important for people, despite the fact theres no specific threat at this time, is very important for all new yorkers to remain aware. You know the drill. If you see something, say something. Im lisa evers, fox 5 news. Alison absolutely. Thank you so much. Im joined by manny gomez, former fbi special agent. Today. Thank you for having me. Alison seems theres no accident that this was brussels, really a strategic attack there. Absolutely. This is where the European Union is, where nato is. Everybody thinks of brussels as large part of what europe is all about. To strategically hit it next to American Airlines sends a message to us all here that if they could do it here, here. If they could do it there, they could do it here. Alison this isnt a particularly large city. While it has a lot going on, it seems theres amazing attention on the city for potential terrorist connections or potential connections to the islamic state. Whats going on in brussels right now . Seems like a hotbed. They have tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of middle easterners that live in this tightknit community. The fact this person that was sought after for weeks after the paris attack was caught on friday and he was living basically hiding openly amongst them, nobody knew, nobody saw anything, nobody said anything. It doesnt make sense. Belgium needs to do a better job to get into the community, to get human informants, to be more alert as to what is the pulse of that, as you said, is a hotbed for terrorism and guess what . Its going to come overseas. Alison thats the one question on many minds today. If they were behind there, they were not on top of things, because these things are happening overseas, is america prepared for an attack here . We are definitely prepared. Since 9 11, weve thwarted a dozen attacks in new york and countless in the u. S. In total. We have learned our lessons since 9 11. We continue to be proactive. They are still reactive. They are lightyears behind us. Theres no guarantee we cannot be attacked as we saw in San Bernardino, but we thwarted numerous attacks. Well continue to do so. We have the best capabilities, resources, in the world, i dare say, between the nypd and the new york office of the f. B. I. Alison thats wonderful to hear. It put some people at ease. Im sure everyone is thinking could we be next . You always think back to 9 11. Sure. Were the biggest target in the world. Make no mistake about that. We have the best defenses in the world as well. The resources that we have that the government has given us, the lessons weve learned since 9 11 and we continue to learn, are second to none. That doesnt guarantee we wont be attacked. However, were in the best against one. Alison wonderful. Tonight. Thank you. Alison heres what else is happening. The fbi suddenly backing off its push for apple to unlock the iphone of one of the San Bernardino attackers. Someone outside might have discovered a way in. If the method is effective, it would likely allow the fbi to apple. Former toronto mayor rob ford lost his battle with cancer. He died today after undergoing treatment for an aggressive form he was just 46 years old. And the city council has tobacco. The law will ban chewing tobacco everywhere, even by Major League Baseball players at Yankee Stadium and citi field. Ban. All right. Were back after the break with a look at why americans work so many hours a week and audrey has the forecast. Hi. Milder temperatures are sitting just to the southwest. Readings are in the 60s from d. C. To atlanta. Coming up. Alison and a visit to the supermarket is different than dad. How Grocery Stores are evolving to meet the new demands of shoppers. I am ready to be cured. Are you ready . Ask your hep c specialist alison welcome back. Audrey puente is here. Everyone is so excited to see you. Youre bringing spring for us. It is the spring feeling. Tomorrow temperatures will soar to above average readings. Today we were normal. These are readings we expect at this time of year. Highs mostly in the 50s across the area with 55 as the high in central park. We were a little cooler to the northwest, like in monticello where the temperature was at 48 degrees. Right now were still sitting at todays high in central park of 55. We hit that at 2 00. Readings are in the 40s across the island because of the southwest wind flow that is keeping temperatures down across our coastal sections. These numbers, mostly inland, are warmer than yesterday. Well see the numbers soar again tomorrow afternoon as our highs will be above average. Thats courtesy of a southwest wind flow which is coming in 10 to 15 miles an hour sustained. It will be slightly breezy tonight. And tomorrow well have the winds slacking off a little bit. Across the northeast, we have readings in the 50s around our area and out towards portions of pennsylvania and towards the nations capital. Well seeing mild weather with temperatures in the 60s. Well get a taste of that tomorrow as we are expecting highs in the 60s in many locations around our region. Theres a cold front sitting to our north. Thats where were seeing some precipitation happening. I think thats where its going to stay. If anything, the front will sag to the south a little bit and provide the Hudson Valley with cloud cover. Its going to get tricky with forecasting your temperatures. With cloud cover, the temperatures will stay cooler the next focus will be on this area of low pressure located out to the west. This will make its way across the nation over the next couple of days and bring our next chance of precipitation by thursday. Before that happens, were expecting a nice mild surge of air to come in. Temperatures will be in the 60s and the 70s. Not only here but across the southeastern states. Tomorrow. Nice and warm across texas and south florida and temperatures in l. A. Will be in the mid 70s. Well go mostly cloudy tonight and thats how well start out our day tomorrow. Lots of clouds in place. I think well break into sunshine from the city southward. As that front hovers to the north as i mentioned earlier, clouds are going to stick around across sullivan, ulster and Dutchess County and as far south as orange and putnam. Not much warming happening there being well be socked in with the clouds. Areas south of the city, well see readings in the 60s and maybe 70 across interior new jersey. Thursday, much of the same story. Its going to flirt with coming southward. That means more cloud cover up to the north of the city and south of the area, well see more in the way of sunshine. Then the area of low pressure i pointed out on the west coast arrives thursday night. That will bring the next chance of precipitation. In the meantime, were expecting mostly cloudy skies tonight. Temperatures pretty nice. Well be in the mid 30s to mid 40s, which is nice for this time of year. Tomorrow, well have more sun to the south. More clouds to the north. Temperatures hovering in the 60s, which is above average. We could see a 70degree reading across interior new jersey. We stay in the 60s a couple of days. Rain into friday. Temperatures in the 50s but a few degrees above normal for this time of year. We look like winter when we started off the week. Well feel like spring. Alison what an improvement tomorrow. All right. Do you laugh at the idea of a 40hour workweek or wish you days . Youre not alone. The latest statistics show work 50 hours a week or more. Why are we working so much . Jessica formoso is working overtime to help us find the answer. Reporter why do you believe people work like crazy . Well, its a function of a few things. One is that companies laid off a lot of employees during the late 90s, and they havent hired off. There are people working two jobs or a job and a half. Reporter the executive Vice President and chief Human Resource officer for time, inc. , says people are always taking on more responsibility. Its the responsibilities they have. Its the desire to get ahead. Its the desire to keep their job and sometimes the reality of what their role is. Reporter according to the labor department, the standard is to work 40 hours a week. But do we . How many hours do you work a week . About 45 to 50. Reporter how many hours do you work a week . Maybe id say 80. The average number of hours people are putting in the office is probably somewhere between 40 and 50 hours a week. I think thats a pretty good average. People are plugged in all the time, so theyre working more hours than that. Today we live in a world that revolves around technology. For many work isnt over when they leave the office. Are you constantly checking your office . Correct. Even at night. Reporter why . Youre not working. Its client service. Its new york city. Its the way we work. Instead of working less time, were more productive people. Reporter the question is can people work less hours and still get work done . They say, yes, its possible. One easy way to reduce your workload and for the nation to reduce its workload, the number of hours it works, that is to figure out how to manage time alison great stuff. Dr. Mike woodward, author of the you plan joins me. What is going on with everyone . The people in the story, some are working 80 hours a week. What are we doing . Were without a doubt one of the most hardworking, productive countries in the world. The average american works 47 hours a week. As you mentioned, nearly a third of us work more than 50 hours a week. You know what . The problem is are we doing a lot of activity or are we getting stuff done . Alison are we getting stuff done . Thats the challenge. Heres the thing. Look, were in the digital global world. These are extended our work lives. Alison some of us have two of them. And then we try to multitask on them. If you dont have the conversations with your family, with your bosses about how do you manage this, youre not going to turn it off completely. But how do you blend it into your life, blend work and life together as opposed to balance, alison balance isnt the right thing. How do you blend so youre doing better in both places, work and home . Some of the folks that were interviewed are probably working in Financial Markets overseas. Time zones are taken into account. Have the conversation with your family. When youre sitting at home, are there times when you wont be honest and its away, gone, so its not causing a distraction. Maybe theres times late at night, were back on and working. How do you blend it in and make sure its in a healthy way, not distracted way. Point. You talk about multitasking. We say we do it because we think it sounds good, but its a bad way to go . Theres so much science that its a myth. The fact is for the most part multitasking will extend the done. It will cause more accidents and it will make you less productive and decrease the quality of your output. Myth. Focus on one thing at a time. Alison amazing. Im always trying to multitask. Maybe im not getting anywhere. Thank you for the great advice. We can use it. An historic baseball game in cuba today. Russ joins me next to talk about that. More than just another exhibition game in cuba this afternoon. What a big day. Russ you know what . You could tell it was different from the moment everybody showed up. It was 50,000 fans in havana. Let me tell you, it was more than a game. Youre talking about a team visiting this communist island for the first time, a major league team, since 1999. And the president was there. It wasnt just the president , you know. I saw one thing that poignant to me, i saw the president with rachel robinson, her husband the first guy to break the color barrier. There she is with the first black president in cuba. Its pretty historic. Alison it was important event played a baseball game. Russ it was not important. It was won by the Tampa Bay Rays and it was a blurring game, but in particular, the cuban fans who stayed around to the end, it was special because in the bottom of the 9th inning, reyes hit a home run for the Cuban National team. You see it there. Alison they got on the board. Russ yes. For those people to see that and to see the happy faces, it was kind of fun. It was fun to watch. What this does for the future, you know, commissioner rob man manfried was there. He said hed love to see a team in canada, another team in another country and that country to me would be cuba. Or mexico or someplace like that. It would be interesting. Alison i was going to say cool to watch. You see the president with his sleeves rolled out, hanging out, talking on tv. You dont see that every day. To me, what struck me, theres a player on the tampa rays, verona, and hes the first cuban player to defect to be allowed to come back and play. He saw his family. You see him there after the game talking with players on the National Team he played with. Alison an amazing day. Russ it was a special day. It tells you it was so much more than just a baseball game and to see that in light of the terrible stuff that happened over in belgium today. It tells you how much international how Important International relations are. Alison it was a nice diversion to have that. Thank you so much. All right.
