Know. He basically helped establish our sense of sort of soul rhythm. Reporter forever bearing his creative soul, he released four albums in 18 months and had been touring. Tmz reporting he was forced to take a break recently because of flulike symptoms. He may have known the end was near, saying at recent show, quote, wait a few days before you waste any prayers. President obama offering sympathy saying prince, quote, few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly or touched quite so many people with their talent. Several celebrities also speaking out. Katy perry tweeting just like that, the world lost a lot of magic magic. Long live the king. And lenny cravitz, my musical showed me the possibilities within myself a few of the many sympathies being expressed. Steve the heavyweights weighing in. Jen it was prophetic when he said save your prayers for days to come. Steve add on thing to say. Jen tmz was the first to break the news. Harvey levin spoke to us a short time ago. We know that the Sheriffs Office where prince died is going to get in touch with the authorities in illinois where prince made an Emergency Landing last friday to find out what it was that caused him to go to the hospital. His reps, when we broke the story, told us he had a bad case of the flu. Honestly, that never made sense to us because he was flying home from atlanta after doing two concerts. He only had 48 minutes to go on the flight. It seemed weird to us at the time and not what we had heard he would go to the hospital, make an Emergency Landing, for flu symptoms. We had heard it was much worse than that, that he was in bad shape, and he has been making multiple trips to the pharmacy over the last couple of weeks as well. So it seems like there is something much more chronic, whether this is a disease or something thats selfinflicted, we cant tell you. But it does seem like it was much worse than the flu. Steve joining us now, rob shooter. Jen a lot of questions as to, you know, why this happened, how it happened. The familys not really releasing any information. Thats whats making it more interesting and strange and really putting out some rumors out there. Theyre saying nothing. Theyre saying no details at all. We know he passed away this morning. We know he was found in an elevator. The fact that the publicist has not mentioned anything has meant that a lot of rumors are now out we were talking about the camera. Prior to this hospitalization illness friday, no one had him on the radar of anyone who was ill. Its like a creepy thing to admit, but we often know celebrities out there who are not doing well and in the media, in the gossip columns. We prepare for this to happen. This came out of the blue. Everybody was scrambling to get the reports together. The information is still really limited. Normally you can find a cousin, aunt, nephew, who will tell you something. Shutdown. Steve in your experience, is he well insulated . How long is it going to take until the real story starts to trickle out . I think soon. He has a ton of music he hasnt released. I know the family are going to want to protect that. Theres a lot of money at stake. Thats a cool thing to say but its a fact about when celebrities die. Well be carefully watching. Steve a list of top 10 [indiscernible talking over something happened here. I think well find it out. At the minute, everyone is shocked and sad. Jen this is coming after the loss of david bowie. Steve glenn frey. We saw him a week ago. He did have the cold. People thought he was under the weather. Steve he wasnt a drug or alcohol guy. I saw him out once in a club in l. A. He was drinking water. Vegan, great shape, really looks after himself. Something steve we appreciate it. Thank you very much. As the democratic race seems to be settling down, the republicans are doing anything but that. Trump inching closer to the nomination, but his opponents and officials are unwilling to accept it. With donald trump comfortably in the lead, the never trump wing of the Republican Party is in a scramble. Mathematically eliminated from getting 1237 delegates, ted cruz and john kasichs main job now getting that magic number before getting that magic number before the republican convention. Im not going to reach 1237. And donald trump is not going to reach 1237. Reporter this as the Republican Party hosts the annual Spring Meeting in florida where theyre formulating a plan to figure out how to handle an open convention. The point is if it takes one ballot or it takes five ballots, its going to the nominee is going to be the person that gets the majority of the delegates on the floor of the convention or sooner perhaps. Reporter now the focus is on the five northeastern primaries on tuesday. Pennsylvania, maryland, connecticut, rhode island and delaware, all states where trump is ahead in the polls. Thats what i brand her. You know the story as well as anybody else. A lot of problems. Reporter Hillary Clinton was unfazed. I will not be responding to the crazy stuff he says. Reporter breathing a sigh of relief as she has her partys nomination within her sights. Bernie sanders took the day off from the campaign trail spending time at home in vermont. Alison morris brings us the short and tragic life of robert peace. Man was born to a single mother in just outside newark. In 98, that brilliant young man defied the odds and started his freshman year at Yale University. In 2011, five weeks shy of turning 31, he was shot and killed in a basement on smith street in newark. Just two years ago, robs yale roommate jeff hobbs wrote a novel about his friend, the short and the tragic life of robert peace. This is their story. This was where we lived when we were randomly paired as roommates freshman year. We met on the fourth floor on movein day. Guns n roses was playing, sweet child of mine. Reporter this is where jeffs story with begins in august of 1998. They were too very different young men. Family in delaware. Rob raised by his mother jackie in south orange, new jersey. His father in jail for murder. It wasnt until robs funeral 13 years later that jeff started putting their story on paper. I set out just talking to six or eight core Family Members and friends and everybody rob had a lot of friends, six to eight people can turn into 75 or 80 people very fast. And as all the stories came together, it seemed like there was some value, some positive value hopefully in telling the story of his life and that is death. Rob is his name. We called him by his middle name. Home from the hospital back on june 25th, 1980, a little bundle. My sister was very happy. Two or three years old, became very inquisitive about Different Things that i thought was ahead of his time. He would wait in the window for his dad on the weekends when his father would come to take him. That changed when he was seven. His father arrested, accused of killing two female neighbors. His incarceration a huge hole in robs life that he rarely spoke about. I had no idea how much in pain he was over his father, his father not being there. We always knew he was in prison. We werent sure, not until we became adults, what exactly he was in prison for, but we know he wasnt there. Reporter jason met rob in the fourth grade. Their parents had sent them to Catholic School so they can get rob showed brilliance from a young age. We had the geeky, nerdy kids, but he made it cool. He wasnt just like a bookworm. He had a swagger about him, was really confident. He had a broad smile. He was a humble person. I dont think he realized how special, how important he really was. He was the one Family Member that would always be there. He was so smart. Im three years older than him and he is helping me with my math homework. You just put it right there. Reporter robert peace came into his own academically and athletically at st. Benedicts prep in newark where he started high school in 1994. Well take you there after the break. T look good. No, not you. Ordinary fuels can clog your engine with dirt. It s like lugging this around. It s dragging down your fuel economy. [ breaking glass ] but over time, using new and improved bp gasoline with invigorate helps clean up that dirt, like hundreds of scrubbing brushes. [ scrubbing bristles ] so that means a cleaner engine, which helps you get more miles per tank. I ll be here if you need me. New bp gasoline with invigorate. Reporter welcome back. Tonight were bringing you the story of robert peace, a brilliant young man who defied the odds, leaving newark, new jersey, for the ivy league. His journey to Yale University took flight while he was in high school at st. Benedicts prep. Reporter st. Benedicts prep young men largely serving newarks minority community. A lot of single parent homes and a percentage of them, the absent dad is incarcerated. We pray for peoples hearts. Reporter this father has been the headmaster since the 70s. That peoples hearts be changed. Reporter the boys run the show here. [inaudible] its high risk. When you put that kind of responsibility in the hands of kids, who have partially developed brains, it doesnt always go smoothly and, therefore, when there are mistakes, when it goes off the tracks, you have Something Real to discuss and to debrief and kids can learn from it. Bruce davis is the Senior Leader at st. Benedicts. Robert peace held the same role 20 years ago. Rob was kind of the voice in the morning meeting that kind of commanded peoples attention. Reporter rob was a key player on the varsity water polo team. Africanamerican guys swimming, playing water polo was really rare. He loved it and was good at it and had a good time doing it. Reporter while he excelled academically and athletically, he was smoking pot. Glenn cassidy confronted him about it and is one of the few people with whom rob spoke about his dad. All of a sudden out of nowhere, he blew up at me. His response was i havent had a father in my life all these years. Why do i need one now . It was a struggle for him. He was a struggle through school here, not academically, but in other areas of his life that he was always battling, always battling these demons that afflicted his heart. And it continued at yale. Reporter rob was accepted to yale, able to attend thanks to the generosity of charles collie. So impressed with rob, he bankrolled his college education. Charlie was an enormous help to dozens of kids here and rob was one of them. In fact, that man that helped him to go to yale just died this morning. Just died this morning. Reporter are you serious . Yep. Reporter rob continued playing water polo and excelling academically. He took up one of the most difficult majors. I think there were only 20 or so people majored in molecular biophysics each year. He turned his marijuana habit into a small business, selling out of his dorm room. Theres no moment you realize your roommate is dealing drugs. It was casual, just a lot of people coming by to sit and hang out, download their days. Reporter that small between the streets of newark and yales castlelike campus. Its hogwarts, literally. Youre walking up. Theres a gargoyle on the rooftop. Reporter Ernie Gonzalez met rob at yale. They grew up on opposite sides of newark and in college bonded over the two worlds they struggled to live in. You hold a lot of secrets. Youre dying to get along with people. How is rob going to share the fact that his father is in prison when people would say they were going to go out. You wouldnt have the money. Thats part of the reason you sold drugs is because you got tired of not being able to go out. Reporter finances didnt keep rob from making films. Diverse friends, athletes, actors, hipsters, international students, people on the dining hall and maintenance staff. If he ever felt like he didnt belong or struggled with that, he certainly didnt struggle with the work. Reporter rob was tapped to be one of yales prestigious societies. But ernie, now a psychiatrist, believes all of the networking and socializing kept rob from dealing with the things that were troubling him. I think rob felt like he had to live up to a certain standard and he had to be the strong guy. He had to be the popular guy. And i think that lends itself to not being able to admit that you have a problem or you feel depressed or that you struggle with the fact that you cant see your dad or youre dying to graduate so you can give your mom a better life. Reporter rob went back to newark after college, drawn by the need to give his mother a better life. He struggled to find his way. Returning to st. Benedict to teach and coach, working as a baggage handler at the airport and trying real estate but never giving up the drugs. I had three friends. Doing the drug game. And they were all having issues. Just a market the market in newark was bad. The last time i interacted with him was because he needed money and i gave it to him. I didnt give it to the other two guys, but to him. He had the best head on his shoulder. Reporter thats the last time you talked to him . Yeah. And i should have been a better friend friend. I should have been a better friend. Him. I was trying to get my house in order. Point. I was in therapy trying to figure everything out. I wish i had reached out to him. Reporter a short time later, rob was killed in the basement that was may 18th, 2011. He was on smith street in the basement apartment and it was an apparent drug deal gone bad. And he was shot. I got up out the bed so i wouldnt wake up my husband. I ran to the bathroom. I closed the door and she was hysterical and they shot him. Who . Who did they sean. They shot sean. Hes gone. Reporter while the peace family was stunned, many of robs friends and mentors were not. He got involved in this kind of numbing himself, i think, with the marijuana situation. Reporter did you know . Oh, yeah. We talked about it. We used to talk about it. Its going to kill you. Its going to kill you, rob. It did. Reporter were you surprised, not that he passed, but that it no. Not at all. Reporter after robs death, jeff fielded a lot of tough questions about why he wrote this book. How can you stand there and tell me theres a positive message in the story of a man who had so many gifts and was given so many gifts and died because of some bad decisions. Reporter a tough question with a lot of different answers. From my perspective, its a teaching book. Its a teaching book. We need to communicate more with our youth and to find out whats going on with them. Just to know his story is getting out there. There are other seans in this city, in this county, that need that positive influence, that influence that could reach out to them and say you dont have to do that. I just hope it brings something positive out of a negative. Going through, what was rob into that he shouldnt have been into, things like that, then it can start and should i have seen that somewhere, well, then i can start to think about what am i seeing in other students that maybe i can recognize as being a similar type of trend. Reporter do you see his life as tragic . Its a tragedy in the classic sense. You have this epic figure with this education whose life is cut short. In that sense, its tragic. Yeah. Anytime somebody that age loses their life, its tragic. I guess what im saying, i dont think it i dont think robs tragedy is any greater than the tragedy of the unknown person who gets killed on 11th street. I think thats tragic as well. The point was just to experience him, his friendship, everybodys life matters. Rob didnt need a book written about his life for his life to steve a couple of days it was too warm. Yesterday was a little too chilly. Today was spot on perfect. Nick it really was. Just a beautiful day. The wind not a big factor. Weve had a couple of breezy days in the past. Today was okay. 71 in new york city. There you go. 76 in albany. It was 73 in town. These are hourly observations. We have 74 washington, d. C. And 74 coming in from pittsburgh. Real nice weather. Tomorrow even milder. Upper 70s around here. We have some showers well be watching. The first batch, west of scranton, back to about williamsport, these scattered showers will be heading off to the north. I dont think well be worried about those. They might clip northwest new jersey and potentially maybe sullivan county, orange county, up north, if they hold together, but the big chance for showers will be tomorrow afternoon. Watch on the movie loop. You can see the trajectory of where the showers are headed, basically this way. I dont think well have much of this tonight. I dont think these showers that will survive in northern virginia. Well look for a lot of clouds tonight. A little sun the first part of tomorrow morning before the clouds really win out, and then comes in mid to Late Afternoon tomorrow and into a good chunk of tomorrow night. Right now its very mild. The highs were in the mid 60s today. And montauk is at 59 right now. They have cooled down, but were about a three to 10 degree temperature scale warmer than we were just 24 hours ago. Wind continues out of the south. It will be a southsouthwest wind. It will be diminishing. Weve seen speeds 15, 16 miles an hour. Tonight, 5 to 10 miles an hour past the midnight hour. High pressure is offshore. Thats why were getting the southerly airflow, one of the reasons. The other is a storm center off to the west with a cold front moving along. Along the front there are showers and storms and heavy rains into louisiana. We could see locally heavy downpours tomorrow afternoon into the first part of tomorrow night as the cold front moves through with the thunderstorm activity. High 70s to 80 in the area tomorrow ahead of that front. Notice behind the front cool in minneapolis to chicago. 60s to 50s there. Well see some of the cooler air arrive, but it wont be as cool. Saturday, close to 70. Sunday will be the coolest day, into the lower 60s. 70s to atlanta tomorrow. We have 80 for much of texas through the Desert Southwest where it pushes into the 90s. We have 60s coming in from the pacific northwest. Heres your forecast showing the clouds taking over tonight. Theres not much grinding out as far as any precipitation until we get into the afternoon, about 2 00, 3 00 in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms will start to fire. The threat will go through a good chunk of tomorrow night. Clouds saturday morning. Then the sun rules by late morning into the afternoon for a beautiful rest of the day and its nice on sunday. A lot of clouds tonight. Its mild. 58 in the city. Lower 50s out to the suburbs. The winds diminishing out of the south at 5 to 10. Limited sun in the morning. Showers and thunderstorms will be around. Cant rule out the morning but its afternoon and into tomorrow night well see most of that. Clouds and sun saturday. 69. Sunday, 63. 72 monday. Showers return tuesday. Well stay in the upper 60s. Slightly cooler wednesday. 64. Back to 68 on thursday. Steve thank you. In fox 5 health news, lots of people dont Pay Attention to the nutrition facts on food labels. Experts say its because the information is confusing and theres plenty of room for improvement. Jennifer joining us, nutritionist lisa drayar. Lets talk about a new label. Steve the new one is so old. We have a graphic. On the left side, you see the current nutrition facts label.
