Gentleness of your words and generosity of your spirit, we see a living example of jesus teachings. Reporter the pope spoke with urgency when it comes to the Climate Change crisis, a solution for which he says cannot be left to a future generation. His next stop was a Worship Service for 450 bishops to hear him, taking time out to observe the jewish holiday and acknowledging the clergy sex abuse scandal, how difficult the years have been and how they have his full support while emphasizing mistakes of the past cannot be repeated. I know how much the wounds of these last few years have weighed on your spirit. We have to hope that such crimes will never repeat themselves. Reporter coming back live to the mass that he is presiding over at washington, d. C. , tomorrow another very busy day. He will speak before congress and in another subtle decision, instead of having lunch with lawmakers, he made the decision to actually have lunch with Homeless People in d. C. Before coming to new york. Dari thank you. Lets continue our Team Coverage tonight with fox news correspondent rich edson in d. C. Rich, between all of these fabulous events, the pope had time to interact with the public. Electric. We saw kids and babies being brought to him. Tell us what it was like. Absolutely. Especially for one little girl along the route who broke the barrier, a fiveyearold girl, ran towards the pope. Security services went to carry her back to the other side of the barrier. The pope gestured to bring her over. Security services brought her to the pope, had a quick conversation, passed a letter that had to do, according to local reports, with her concern for immigration, and the pope continued on his journey. 11,000 onlookers on the south side of the white house earlier today. At the white house in his Jeep Wrangler popemobile. Everywhere he has gone, not only have there been massive crowds, excited crowds, cheering for the pope, many trying to break the barriers, but all throughout the city, real passion for the pope. The city very much shut down because of the popes visit. A security barrier throughout the circumference of the white house blocking anybody that didnt have tickets to get into the area from getting anywhere near the white house earlier today. Its been pretty much gridlock in washington, d. C. , much smaller downtown in d. C. Than in new york city. So we feel it a bit whenever you close down a significant part of the city like they have today. Hes a short trip up north of where we are at the basilica of the Immaculate Conception where hes speaking in front of 25,000 people. Excited crowds, massive crowds everywhere hes been. Dari thank you. We appreciate that. Gridlock in manhattan. Dari lets talk street closures beginning. Well stay with that throughout the popes visit. The big problem, areas tomorrow will be around st. Patricks cathedral, the papal residence and the u. N. Steve dont bother trying to catch or drive a bus around central park, Madison Square garden, the 9 11 memorial, the papal residence or our lady queen of Angels School in east harlem. Dari lets get to dan bowens with more on the closures and last Minute Security checks that are being done. Reporter pope francis will be staying at a townhouse madison. He is a pontiff who is revered for his dedication to simplicity, but when it comes to security and this historic first visit, its about as complicated as anything new york city has ever seen. Get a good nights sleep, mayor de blasio whispered to Timothy Cardinal dolan on the eve of pope francis arrival. Both leaders will be very busy thursday and friday. First thing it will be in his company again. I love him. I consider myself close to him. I will feel honored to have been part of the conclave from when he came. It will be good to see him. Reporter as the city prepares to see the holy father, many people are seeing some of the preparations. The garbage cans removed from the sidewalk near st. Patricks cathedral. No parking signs are posted in several neighborhoods. Nypd cinder blocks are in place and a chain link fence borders central park west. Im so eager to show you the city that i love and this church that i cherish. To be able to do that will be one of the thrills of my life. Reporter he will be blanketed with 6,000 officers on duty during the twoday trip, adding a wrinkle to the beefed security measures, the visit coincides with the u. N. General assembly, bringing together 90 percent of the worlds leaders. This is a week of faith. Reporter commuters will be praying the Additional Trains and subways added during the papal visit will ease the burden of the street closures. Mr. De blasio plans to attend many of the events, including the Prayer Service at st. Patricks, interfaith vigil and mass at msg. As the city opens the arrival, its an amazing moment, a moment to recommit ourselves. Reporter there will be plenty of extra mass transit into the city, path trains, lirr, nj transit, all will be running additional service. One final fun fact about the townhouse where he will be staying on east 72nd, it was donated by former mayor of new york city hugh grant back in 1975. Back to you. Dari good to know. Thank you. If you have steve the baseball world mourning the death of a legend. Dari yogi berra passed away. He was 90. Russ salzberg joins us with more on the yankee icon and your friend. Russ i tell you what, one of the very best things to happen to me in this business was having a friendship with the one and only yogi berra. Today is a rough one personally. When i was with him yesterday afternoon, i kind of knew the end was near, but i did not expect it to happen this fast. However, i felt better this morning after getting an email from Dennis Hamill that said it aint over til the legend dies, yogi berra leaping do the arms of don larson after catching his perfect game in the 56 world series. No. 8, yogi berra. Russ ten times a champion as a player, three times a most valuable player, 15 years an all star. After serving in the navy in the dday invasion, he made his yankees debut in 46. He retired in 63 and was named yankee skipper. Despite leading the bombers to the world series, he was fired after the season. He went to the mets as a coach for seven seasons, once more taking his team to the world series. Fired in 75, he returned to the bronx as a coach, won two more world series championships and became yankees skipper again in 84 and was fired the following season. That was his decision. He and george steinbrenner. Yogi refused to set foot in the stadium for 15 years. In 88, he was honored with a plaque in monument park. When you have Something Like this, youre either dead or going. Reporter in 98, the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center and the stadium opened at montclair university. A visit would lead to a reconciliation. Having him coming back to be part of the yankees where he should be. Reporter steinbrenner apologized and in 99, berra returned. Its great to come home again. He threw out the first pitch caught by joe girardi. On teams loaded with stars like dimaggio and mantle, he led in runs batted in for seven seasons. He was inducted into the hall of fame in 1972. I always loved the game of baseball. I gave it everything i had. Russ following his playing days, he would become one of the games most respected statesmen and popular pitch man. But it was his famed yogiisms that made him an american icon. Its deja vu. It aint over til its over. Nobody goes there anymore. Its too crowded. Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical. I didnt really say everything i said. We had fun. We became good friends. Russ i was fortunate enough to walk the field with yogi before the doors were closed on the old Yankee Stadium and talked about memories. For you, what is your no. 1 memorable moment for yogi berra inside Yankee Stadium . My first game. Russ got to be no. 1. Without question, the most unaffected superstar there ever was, is or will ever be. What ill remember most, i saw him every weekend for the past 18 months. Each time i watched him treat every one of his aides and attendants as if they were the superstars. I miss him already. I know that i am not alone steve its sad. Russ a special guy steve you were tight with him. Thats really sad. Dari we need more people like that. Russ the world was a better place with him around steve people on social media paying their respects dari samuel l. Jackson tweeting steve all right. And yogis story, life and career are being remembered at the museum in little falls. Mac king will talk with fans in the next half hour. Dari some business news. Time is running out for Credit Card Companies and retailers to adopt more secure Chip Technology technology Islamophobia Steve not everyone will make the deadline. Alison morris joins us to explain whats behind the holdup. Dari these kids want to sound perfect when they perform for the pontiff in just a couple of days. Were going to take you to a okay. Steve the deadline to switch to chip credit cards is a little more than a week away. Dari a lot of people dont have the cards and many retailers arent ready to take them. Alison morris is here to explain whats going on. Youd think everybody would want steve weve been talking about this forever. Its ridiculous. The deadline is october 1st. Not only people dont have just talking about chip cards in 2015. Its unbelievable. Here in the u. S. , were one of the only countries that doesnt use them. The rest of the world has been using them for decades. The real issue, it boils down to money. It is expensive for the banks to issue the new cards and for stores to install new chip reading terminals. So they have dragged their feet until now. Only 63 of americans nationwide are using emv cards and 47 percent of retailers are expected to accept them. Reporter thats changing. Starting thursday, october 1st, more americans will have emv or chip cards and stores will have the right equipment to accept them. By october 1st, retailers need a migration to emvequipped point of sale terminals. That means that theyre on the hook for any fraud if they dont migrate by that date. Reporter why the switch . Chip cards are safer and more secure than Magnetic Stripe cards. After the target data breach, the Credit Card Companies decided it was time to make their cards harder to hack. Reporter youre less vulnerable to having your data taken than you would with a regular Magnetic Stripe card. Instead of passing your credit card information to the merchant, what it does is it passes a unique transaction code that the merchant gets and if a hacker gets into and tries to reuse, they wont be able to use it. Its basically like stealing an expired password. Reporter the cards are tough to copy. They make it harder to counterfeit the physical credit card because of that chip thats in there. Reporter in spite of the october 1st deadline, some stores and banks are taking their time with the chip upgrade. If you dont have one of these chip cards, youll probably get one by the end of the year. Reporter theyre taking the chance that theyll be on the hook if youre hacked. This doesnt change consumer liability. The only thing that will happen if you swipe instead of using the chip is you wont get that extra protection that that technology provides. Reporter so a couple of things to keep in mind when you get your chip cards if you dont have them. Stripes. If you are without a chip terminal, you can still use your card. Most of the cards will be where you insert the card and a signature. The card issuers are expected to introduce these eventually, but its about easing in. Its expensive. They dont want to prevent people from spending money. Dari especially with the holidays are coming up. Steve thats why aprs are so high. Reporter it would be smart to get the chip and pin. Steve lets talk about the weather. 78, warmer. Dari its a nice day. First day of fall. Nick welcome to fall. What a beautiful first day. But not feeling like fall. The temperature is above average. More of the clouds being suppressed to the south. The ridge of fair weather is in control here. Now, rain way off to the west. Thats not coming anytime soon. Well stay in the dry area for two to three more days. The concern is this. Something is going to get going here and it will slide up the eastern seaboard or come close to the new york city area. Parents are turning to Natural Remedies to keep kids healthy during the cold and flu season. Some experts are skeptical. Steve joining us dr. Devi from the nyu school of medicine. There is a push we want to go more natural, holistic, organic, but does it work . It depends what youre looking at. This is the category of alternative or complimentary medicine. Aroma therapy is the idea youre taking herbs, plants, flowers, using extracts, diluting it and breathing it in or rubbing it on your body, like when you get a massage and you notice the scent. It doesnt seem to be harmful, but whether it protects you from colds and flus is more controversial. There are studies that show that these oils can kill bacteria or kill viruses, but on a surface, not necessarily the bacteria that really infects you and make you sick. Thats the danger there. And because theyre not approved by the fda, theyre not regulated. Steve there seems to be a little wishful thinking. It would be great if it works. We need more research. Of course. With the research, the difficulty is because theyre not regulated, we cant mandate a lot of the research. From one supply to another, there could be different amounts of the active ingredients. Dari i think on the other hand when it comes to Natural Remedies and, like, not fighting colds, per se, but lavender can be very calming. Of course. Yes. Dari eucalyptus can clear your sinuses. And that sort of means it could be helpful. I do think these things sometimes help people with stress. They do feel better and maybe that strengthens their immune system. Under the respiratory topic, some people have allergies to the peppermint. Its something to keep in mind that you might have worsening of this in a few cases. Steve lets talk about this. Fruits and vegetables and may be sabotaging your weight loss plan. We have a very broad definition of fruits and vegetables. Thats the problem, right . So this is exactly. We through potatoes in there, theyre not so bad, but the idea that the way we eat them as french fries, mashed potatoes mixed with butter, sour cream, thats what makes them unhealthy. For people who are using that as their main source of fruits and vegetables, the problem is they gain weight rather than lose weight. That can lead to other problems. Dari i found it to be so interesting that in one study, it says that potatoes and tomatoes account for more than half of the u. S. Vegetable consumption. Sure. Tomatoes are the same thing. Tomatoes can be healthy. When we have it as ketchup, youre adding the sugar into it and everything else, its the processing of the food that makes it worse. The ones that tend to be better, blueberries, those tend to improve weight loss. If were thinking about weight loss, blueberries, strawberries, apples, pears, grapes, theyre the best bet. Steve the less processed the better. Exactly. The studies, its difficult to test. A lot are selfreported. The person is telling you what theyre eating. The people who eat the healthier fruits and vegetables may ares healthier. Dari like exercise. Not the same as just taking anybody who doesnt have fruits and vegetables and giving them a specific fruit and looking to steve right. Dari all right. Thank you. Steve its hard to eat right. Youve got to do it. It can be more discouraging. Things you thought were healthy werent. Hard. Steve we appreciate it. Dari and now its fall. Beginning the nesting season. We may get close to something still on sunday with that storm off to the south. Still not convinced. We still have the clear sky for tonight. That will no problems there. Mild. 78 new york city. Hanging on to 80 at newark and allentown. Low 70s at belmar. Low 70s across long island to 69 at montauk. Back to 78 up in the Hudson Valley with a northeast wind that will continue and become more northerly. Lets look at the big picture. The country. Theyre going that way. Were not expecting those to come in our direction. The other area were watching is this area off the southeastern part of the United States. Eventually a storm is going to form there. It will start drifting slowly northward and be an impact into the carolinas into virginia the next day or two. Then it may migrate further northward. Well be on the Northern Edge sunday. That could bring rain or showers towards central and southern new jersey, increase the wind along the coast. We could have a bit of some beach issues going on over the weekend. 79 in the city again tomorrow. Probably about 80. Im thinking 80 in a chunk of the area tomorrow. 70s to chicago. Minneapolis, 70. A lot of the country is looking at temperatures quite warm. 90s through texas. 80s in florida. 101 vegas. 90 in l. A. 80 in san francisco. Heres the futurecast. The sky stays clear tonight. We stay clear tomorrow. Well look for sunshine and temperatures stopping up around the 80degree mark or so. A little front passes to the east. As we head into friday, well watch the wind shift off the ocean again. Sun, clouds. It will be cooler, but in the middle 70s. Well wait to see what happens over the weekend.
