Organizers also collected items to create care packages for local First Responders. At a ceremony in clayton firefighters and ems spent the morning honoring their comrades who died. The department rang a bell and held a moment of silence for each flight hijacked. First responders say it is the least they can do for the fallen heroes. In the fire service in general and Public Safety we there are training aspects we go through to help prepare us for incidents and the willingness to go is just our job. Everyday we put our uniforms on, our patch. In several local communities pieces of the twin as memorials and reminders. Reporter some who come here are too young to remember. Others remember all too well. Horror, disbelief, a feeling of patriotism, fear. Reporter 15 years passed since this beam from the north tower crashed into ground zero. In chapel hills several events honored those who lost their lives 15 years ago today. 2996 flags, one for each victim, were placed around the bell tower at the center of uncs campus. Regardless of every racial tension or ot together not just to recognize one another but to recognize people who have come before us and have lost their lives. On friday, rotc students and Community Members participated in a step run climbing 2076 steps, the same number in the twin towers. For many of us, memories involve sitting in front of a television. I remember going back and digging for people. I remember the smell. I remember the faces, the faces when we were helping people, people with ashes on their faces. They just had no hope. Reporter johnson says safety on cement 11, 2001 as a member of the nypd. He went inside buildings and helped people across brooklyn bridge. He watched the twin towers fall saying they looked like they were melting. He recalls the horror of seeing people fall in the debris. He was among those finding survivors in the rubble. He remembers the hope in the weeks that followed. He hopes there is still a piece of that today. I would love for everyone to moment to take advantage of this moment to remember that there is hope, that we can love without discrimination, and i find that the more you judge, the more you stop loving. The more you stop judging, the more you can love. Just to know that we all are in this together and we all have value. Johnson says his work as a mentor is like being a First Responder and sometimes what is important is not respond but how you respond. A recently hired firefighter in durham says attacks motivated her to apply for the position. Today she shared with derek lewis how inspiring it was to see First Responders rushing toward the towers as so many people ran away. Reporter a firefighter for ten years old when she watched the attacks happen on tv in school. We all went down to the cafeteria. At this time everyone was in there. We were all looking at this one small tv. There were a lot of people crying. I didnt understand what was going on. Then we saw the second plane hit. Thats when annie knew something was wrong. At 10 years old she saw the attack responders rushing towards danger. I just thought about all those firefighters that went into that building, both buildings. Their mind was on those people. 15 years later when annie gets that call, her mind is on saving people. Being there for somebody when its their worst day ever, you know. We dont get calls when everyone is having a good time. And paramedics died when twin towers collapsed. While that might set fear in some, their braveness inspires annie. That kind of sacrifice, what greater thing could you ever think to do with your life than to be in a position to be willing to do Something Like that . Reporter annie like the hundreds of firefighters who got that call the morning of september 11 knows when shes on a call, she is not alone. Youve got each others backs. That gives you confidence because youve always got somebody with you. Reporter annie is starting her career at this fire station where her father retired four years ago.
