Presence can live on forever. For the parents, every post, every text message, every voice mail, its all precious, especially after thew cold february night, one year ago, a night they still struggle to process. I just heard gunshots. I dont know what building it came from, but i heard kids screaming. Im not staying here. Im going to go in there and see whats going on, sir. That night. That night, i dont know what to call it. Its a horrible night. It changed my life. Squeezing me. The wedding just weeks before their deaths marked a happy union in the families. Now its grief that reinforces i had three children who were murdered. They were murdered by islamaphobia. Reporter the families believe craig hicks murdered their children over fear of muslims. But the police say its over parking spaces. Dias car in his wifes spot. Three spots away, his wifes car in free parking. The two spaces in front of hicks apartment, empty. This was very insulting for all of us. We know our children better. We know our children, theyre not about arguing with anybody about parking or anything of that nature. Its more important that this crime is declared a hate crime to you, than anything else. Yes, i think calling crimes different names than the reality means a green light for more crimes to happen. Not called a hate crime yet. Reporter they say evidence proving this will come out in court, but in the meantime, they point to the brutality of the killings as confirmation. What was going through youre mind as you were reading that . I never talked to anybody about it. My only condolence is that i told her truthfully, and honestly, they did not suffer. It was swift. Some say it was execution style. It was execution style for my daughters. He shot top of the head, through the brain stem. That means no chances. Reporter that wasnt the case for dia, who was shot multiple times at the front dure. His mother will never forget, learning a month after the shooting, that her son was in fact, still breathing as the killer went to leave. For split second i thought there is hope we can save his life. My mind, and then he continued, and he shot him again. That last shot killed me more than that first shot, many shots. If hes down there and helpless, why is that last one . Prosecutors are seeking the Death Penalty. What do you think about that . We as families are talking about that. We havent made decisions. I do not waste a second of my life thinking about him. How are you dealing with your grief . Sometimes i wish i went with them. I blame myself. Why i didnt go. Why didnt i go . I think she survived because god had made her to survive. We could not live without her. Because im done with one day. I cant wait to join him. I have to continue in it. Thats what god wanted me to do. I obey his order, but its prison. [ music ] reporter in sharing this life sentence, they lean on each other the most. The state says they have all the evidence they need, and they will seek the Death Penalty in this case. Prosecutors from the state are handling this case. But the fbi also did its own investigation. They say they have completed the investigation. They passed their findings along to the u. S. Attorneys office, who is working with the department of justice to see if this will in pact be labeled a hate crime, and if craig hicks will face murder charges. We sat down with the chief of police there. Take a look. Investigations take time, even preliminary investigations take time, and that was certainly the case here, and for grieving families waiting for information about a loved one, and suspecting the worst. I so wish that we could have gotten information to them more quickly on that night we talked about why they initially thought this was over parking. For the parents of deah barakat, yusor, and Razan Abu Salha their parents are proud of their posts, and many look around here, and are inspired. In death, your facebook profile becomes your selfmade memorial. This is deah barakats last post. It shows them giving out free dental supplies to the homeless in downtown durham. As the young couple worked to become dentists, this was razan used her art to help. She loved looking after them. So happy to do things. To do signs and banners for deahs charity activities. I have pictures of him. He sent me texts that we raised 1400. He was so happy. And the poster was nice. Deah included the hashtag downtown smiles. And one year later, the post brings smiles to his parents and inlaws. These children were raised in faith to believe. Youre not a good friend unless you are to your friends what you are to yourself. So many of their chirps online posts are calls to help others. Since theyre murders, a Global Movement has lived on, under winners. Fact that if you live right, and you die for who you are, and we believe they died for their faith, that you won. Because our faith says that you go to heaven. You gave the ultimate sacrifice. Reporter in the past year, young people have built habitat for humanity homes in their food drives. We want, as a university to do everything we can. Reporter scholarship funds raised in their honor now helped seven students at nc state, and chapel hill. I am a dental student at unc, and i need your help. Reporter but this may have the most lasting affect. Deahs impassioned plea to bring free dental care to Syrian Refugees in turkey. Before his death, deah worked to raise 20,000 for the trip. That online fund raging surged to more than half a million. Deahs father went last summer, helping to bring smiles to more than 800 patients. Mostly children, the syrian civil wars smallest, and most vulnerable victims. We are the lucky ones. There are so many more terrible situations than us. You lost three kids and you called yourselves the lucky ones. Compared to others, yes. When i look around me, god blessings is endless. All right, turning now to weather, and it was a cold day outside. Our high was 40 degrees. It was our coldest day in nearly three weeks. But ive got five days on the sevenday forecast that are just as cold, if not colder. Its in the 30s out there right now. The sun is down, and its going to get even colder tonight. Weve got windchills in the 20s. So as you head out tonight, temperatures down to about 30 at 8 00. That will feel like 22. So well continue with temperature over women, as we go hour by hour. You can see the few clouds we had today. Well lose those, looking for clear skies by tomorrow morning, and youre out the door thursday morning to work and school. 20 will feel like 14 degrees. Thats not even the coldest morning on the sevenday forecast. So a big area of low pressure, and some snow up to our north, but still wrapping around that cold air. Weve got a small chance of rain and snow. Thanks to this area of low pressure and obviously, the snow out in front of it. Coming our way on friday. But tomorrow, another cold day. And generally sunny, as we get you through the day very quickly. Just not a whole lot going on. A pretty nice day if you are inside a heated building. I want to talk about the small here we are friday morning, clouds start to increase after a sunny day thursday. Notice some moisture developing out of the south of that area of low pressure, and from lunchtime on through the afternoon its going to be a quick hit of either some light snow, maybe a dusting, mixing up with some light rain, maybe some light sleet, but its not going to last long. Its outof here by friday night with very little impact. But remember, its still going to be cold on friday. Just like it will be cold tomorrow. So tomorrows our sunny day with temperatures again right around 40. Theres that area of low pressure, and mainly south and southeast of the triangle, getting that isolated rain, maybe some light snow with minimal impact. Then we get into this weekend, where temperatures drop even colder. Some of us not above freezing all weekend long. That will set the stage for what we could see monday and tuesday. A larger area of low pressure bringing moisture up from the south, combining with that cold air from the north. Thats a classic set up for us, out, we could see snow starting monday afternoon, and evening. Then turning to rain, giving us a wet, and cold day tuesday. So snow then rain. And cold the whole time. Again, a high tomorrow of 40. Same place we were today. Even colder friday with a high of 39, and a few snow flurries. Again, some of us not above freezing all weekend long. Our coldest morning, 13 degrees on sunday. Our coldest day, sunday afternoon, we dont get above 30. Then well keep an eye on that system coming at us monday and tuesday as we eventually start to warm up. So our 3degree high tomorrow is 40. Thats exactly where we were today. We forecast 41.
