Breaking news on long island where a wild scene unfold ld overnight in Suffolk County. It was a trail of destruction and a suspect in custody now. Today in new yorks Katherine Creag is in patchogue with the story. Kat . Reporter here in patchogue, michael, Police Spent Hours here. A Police Officer just left a little while ago. This was, as you said, a wild scene, bizarre chain of events that stretched across Suffolk County for several miles. It started out in holtsville, west of where we are. According to the police department, there was a crash between two cars in holtsville. On the long island expressway near exit 62 going eastbound. There are reports one of the drivers got out of the vehicle on foot and started running toward a parking lot. Stole a truck and took off in it driving several miles east towards patchogue. In the middle of all of that, a Good Samaritan reportedly was hit by a car as that person tried to paramedics rushed that person to the hospital. The driver in the original crash ended up here where we are in patchogue at route 112. Were told the driver hit a Police Cruiser and crashed a truck he had stolen. He has been taken into custody. In fact, we saw a Police Officer taking down that person. Were waiting to get an update from police. Taking a little longer than usual, michael. Accident reconstruction teams were on the scene trying to retrace what led to the crash that resulted from a person possibly being ejected from the vehicle. We saw a crumpled black vehicle at the scene that was towed away on a flatbed about 15, 20 minutes ago. Were hearing this was the rumt of a police chase between a vehicle and Hillside Police. Vehicles appears to have tumbled on to i78 that were on the other side of. Thousands of people in the bronx are concerned after the legionella bacteria turned up in the water system at a housing complex. Its the melrose house. The Health Department sent notices that hot water in one building did test positive. Now in the last six months there have been four cases of legionnaires disease reported at that housing complex. According to our partners at the bergen record, an investigation by the manhattan d. A. s office suggests the agency quietly spent 1. 75 million in legal fees. Thats more than it spent during the George Washington bridge lane closure probe. Records suggest that they redirected 1. 8 billion to rebuild the pulaski skyway and other new jersey roads. The work on the bridge that will replace the Tappan Zee Bridge is halfway done now. Said to be on time and on budget. Youve seen the construction on whats called the new, new york bridge going across the hudson. Its going to start to go up as well as across. With the help of newly installed cranes, workers will begin constructing the bridges 419foot towers. Contractors did this. Its a full mockup on how the work will be done on dry land. Workers expected to reach the top of the towers by next summer. This is a 4 billion project and its expected to be finished sometime in 2018. Uber drivers can now move forward with their lawsuit against the car servi for denying them full benefits of employment. A federal judge in california granted class action status to their lawsuit. This is where the driver ended up. According to the car lot owner, the car lot owner said he had never seen so many Police Officers in one place. It all started around midnight. There was a crash between two cars in holtsville on the l. I. E. Near exit 62 going eastbound. Were told one of the drivers got out of his vehicle on foo and start to go run toward a parking lot where he stole a tractortrailer and took off in it driving east towards patchogue. In the middle of all that, a Good Samaritan reportedly was hit by a car as they tried to chase the driver. The driver in the original crash ended up here at patchogue. He crashed the tractortrailer into a utility pole at at route 112. He tried to break into the office of the used car lot and we just talked with the owner of that car lot who said this. Broke in here. Theres blood and what not on the walls. He said to the police as i understand, he was looking for and then they caught him down the street. Reporter the car lot owner showed us this. The suspect broke a glass door to get into the office. He believes to look for keys to steal another vehicle. The suspect ended up at a deli next door. They quickly arrested him. Saw a crumpled black pickup truck being towed away on a flatbed a short time ago. Again, were hearing this is the result of what theyre calling a Short Police Chase between a vehicle and Hillside Police. So far, Hillside Police not saying much on this or what possibly led to it. Police say ramon grabbed the victim as she was entering her apartment on west 172nd street sunday morning. The woman fought back and ramon took off. 4yearold in serious condition. A car hit the child in canarsie last night at east 84th street and avenue l. Police are investigating right now. The child is being treated at kings county hospital. New Health Concerns in the bronx after the legionella bacteria turned up in the water system at a housing complex. Health Department Said notices in one building. Two other buildings tested negative. Five other buildings in that complex. The in the last six months, four cases have been reported at that housing complex. As a precaution, the Health Department ordered the hot water shut off in the affected building at 681 cortland avenue. Each apartment will get a water filter. City says people are safe to use the cold water for drinking, cooking and bathing. Officials believe the discovery is not related to the previous outbreak. New jersey is reporting its first death from the west nile virus since 2013. The state department of health tells our news partner at the bergen record that the 64yearold died. Its one of several cases reported in new jersey this year. Symptoms of west nile include sudden high fever, muscle pain and a headache that worsens. And he told the officers and detectives he was looking for keys to take one of the cars. Reporter the broken glass that you see there, the car lot owner says the suspect broke a glass door to get into the office to look for keys to steal another vehicle. There are new Health Concerns in bronx after the legionella bacteria turned up at a housing complex. The Health Department said notices that hot water in one building in the Melrose Houses tested positive. Two other buildings tested negative. Test results were outstanding at five other buildings all in that complex. In the last six months, four cases of legionnaires disease have been reported at that housing complex. Now, as a precaution, the Health Department ordered the hot water shut off of the affected building. 681 cortland avenue. Each apartment will get a water filter. City says people can use cold water for drinking, cooking and bathing. Thats little consolation to people who live there. Fear for my life. I dont know if theyre saying the truth or lying. The hot water runs in the same pipes like it doesnt make any sense to me. Thats the one feeling of one tenant. The city says the discovery is not related to the previous outbreak. Police are searching for a suspect they say raped a woman and tried to attack two others in the same night. Surveillance video shows the man running away after he raped a woman last sunday. He dragged the victim into an alley of rockaway boulevard in canarsie. They released a sketch of the suspect. But he uses a tshirt, to cover his face. We have to be diligent and really be paying attention when were walking. Scary to know that we never had anything like that in this neighborhood. Because his face is hard to make out, police hope somebody recognizes the blue and White Hawaiian shorts he was wearing, similar to the ones pictured here. The nypd says newly released numbers says this summer was one of the safest in the city. The number of homicides and shootings has never been lower since the department started tracking them back in 1994. The nypd credits its allout initiative which put extra officers in high crime neighborhoods. The Department Says its taking steps to tackle the number of Homeless People out on the city streets. In the last three weeks, officers have identified about 80 homeless encampments and visited 50 of them. Many were cleared of debris and bedding. Many of those homeless refuse offers to go to shelters. The Bronx High School rocked in a gas explosion last month is expected to be ready for the first day of classes. Students return to john f. Kennedy high school in marble hill next week. Officials say a worker testing a gas line lit a match that caused the blast. It blew out the walls and windows of several classrooms on the sixth floor. The city says damaged rooms will be sealed off. In new jersey, a new investigation suggesting the Port Authority is running up a huge tab to pay lawyers after being accused of improperly using toll money to fix the pulaski skyway. The agency quietly spent 1. 75 million in legal fees. Thats more than it spent during the George Washington bridge lane closure probe. It would take the mta at the current pace, 52 years to repair all subway stations according to the Citizens Budget Commission. The Watchdog Group finds 76 of the 468 subway stations to be in good repair. Manhattan and the bronx each have 14 of them and queens 7. The Citizens Budget Commission also found 33 stations need work and more than half of their structural parts. They found the 52nd street stop in wood side is the most dilapidated. Pagliano would not answer questions asserting his constitutional right against selfincrimination. The Clinton Campaign said they encouraged pagliano answer questions. Two other clinton aids will testify before a Congressional Committee starting today. Clinton will testify in october.
