It is inspired by the life of africanamerican prize fighter jack johnson. No one takes a hit in this play. Tracie strahan thkes a look at this in todays episode of positively black. Battles in the boxing ring are framed against the struggles of early 20th century racism in the new broadway play, the royale. Its loosely based on the life of africanamerican boxer jack johnson. But instead of punches, it uses a unique percussion to tell the story. Chris davis stars as jay, the sport jackson and we have winston the trainer here. Lot of people are talking about tris play. For you, first new york play. Yes, yes. You werent terrified going on stage . I wasnt. Like i said, i trust my cast members and the story and the work that i put into this moment in my life. Its a unique story. You talk about balts noteiust in the ring but just in live. Were talking abodt the racism that this character is up against at that hetime. Wit has a unique with your sister. Tell us aboutatthat. My sister represents the trother part of america that doesnt have the opportunity to reach the level tsat i have as a champion. She is the one trying to enlighten me on the consequences of my achievements. Even though they shuchbt be whe you want o be the best at anything you want to do. Thats really his goal. He wants t anbe the champion of its the other voice in my head saying dont forget and remember emieople youre leaving behind and the sacrifices that are there. I talk about the percussion of this plly. How do you do a boxing play and nobody gets tot . What do you do . The hits. Nobody gets punched in the face. Ask my trainer. The hits and the punches are in the dialog. As khris was saying, part of the battle is the battle inside of his head. S sister represents the struggle that black people have gothne to, to find identity in america. He uhes the metaphor of the hot comb and how trying to become something you arent and how painful that is. Thats a blow. Thats a punch. The audience gets it. Im wondering, clark, when you rst read the script, what was your thought on it . Weve seen rocky from everything else. What struck you about this one . What marco had put, he author, he placed in the directions were that there were no punches thrown and that everything was done in pools of light. I thought, i want to see how this works. How can you have a boxikg match where no one is going to throw any punches . As a person who loves theater, and this is reaf lly theater, the story is being thrown out to us tell, i thought that this going to be a bit of a challenge. Lets judge this young man in his new york debut. The stage that youre liking . Everything. His enthusiasm, his willingness to try something out new. And also his r tolve to say, well, that doesnt work for me. So i think that hes solid in his craft and in his opinion for what needs to be said arnd done. I think hes a ten. Before we go on every night, i tell him champ, lets go. Im feeling that. Hes our champion. Now, for me, hes our champion. We want to let every yobody know that youre playing at the mitzi new house center at lincoln center, the royale. Khris, ill give you the last word on this. Why should people see th s as more than a boxing play . Because tk issues thaiswere raising in this play are still relevant today. The food line rom 1905 to 2016 are still relevant. Thats why i wanted to do the play. Message, powerful message to the audience with an old story. Thats why irehink they should see it. Thank you for coming on to spar with me today. It was a knockout. Kai wright is an editor with the nation, h ting an 8week long podcast in partnership with wnyc. Welcome kai. This is the discussion that goes on in new york city. Its 8. 3 million residents evry day. Its a discussion oa wha neighborhood is coming up, what neighborhood to get into. This is things that youre exploring. Tell me how it came about. I live in bedstuy, in brooklyn, ive been there a ttle over a decade. I can remember the change that happened on my block. Right. Over the course of that became a fancyrpeace to live, where people wanted to buy homes, flipped these brownstones. You felt this wave coming into the neighboood and the tension that came from that. I and others were wondering whats going on . What drives this kind of change . Is it a good thing, a bad thing . How do we interact with each other . You explore how it happens. Some are saying, its a nice place to live and they start buying homes. Its much more complicated than that. It is. There are people obviously that are dedicated to finding a neighborhood that has had poor investment or there hasnt been a lot of investmen and they think they can extract a lot of money through housing. Once that happens, theres a whole industry of people who move us into and out of the neighborhoods. There are winners and losers in that. Both financially and culturally. Its caused a lot of tension in the city. Its caused a lot of cultural tension in the city and people seeking homes and people o arerying to keep their homes as the prices go up. Right. This is really one of the great debates in new york city. We have people, when areas improve, how can you be against e area improving. As you point out, there are people that will call that home before who suddenly find theyre not welcome in their own neighborhoods. Not welcome. Often are violently pushed out. Violence is a big word. The people we profile in the first elesode is a woman, one of my neighbors in bedstuy who woke up one day and the house she was living in had been sold and she had been living there for 30 years as a renter. In order to sell it, she had to get out. The new buyers wanted her out. The process of trying to make her move over the next year was really horrific. E lived without water and gas. It was just a constant harassment. Thane problem was, she could not find a place in the neighbod ood anywhere near the rent that she could still pay. So there is a cost to an improving neighborhood that doesnt take into accoulknt the people who have been there many years and by lding it.
