Pras has a new widely claimed political documentary called sweet mickey for president and his candidate won. Take a listen. We need someone to inspire the people. I called my family and w thas like, you know what . You need to run for president of haiti. I read on he intn net that you used to wear diapers. Thats the artist not the actor. President . Are you running to become the next president of haiti . Wycliff jean is running for president. They say you lack a definitive plan to bring haiti i guess there wont be other fuji album. Welcome, pras my ichel, thank you for joining us. Tell us about your life blood from haiti. Growing up in brooklyn, i always used to hear negative things about haiti. So, even though i wasnt connected with haiti personally, but iwised to hear the stories at home. And so when wycliff and i got together to start the fugees, we wanted to represent haiti. And the push for the film arted after the devastating earthquake in 2010. You saw what it did to the countrotyou loved so much. And thats when you started saying you needed to get involved, right . Right. I wanted to get involved and do a documebtary. I wasnt quite sure what it the idea to tap sweet micky for press. And by tapping, you mean a musician who performed in diapers. You told him to run for president. I told him he should run for president and he said okay. Why did you think a musician would be a good president . Well, i just thought people had an affinity to him and he could aspire to people. He changed the Political Landscape haiti. Thats the one thing he did. So thats kind of what i was running on. Its all about hope. Itas about people wanting their votes to be heard. And thats what the whole movie is about. So its not just about being haitians but a human being, the fundamental rights we all should have. And thats to vote. And we saw at the end of the clip, your former bandmate, wycliff, said i guess there wont be another fugee album. This created a rift, didnt it . Yeah, he was running for president and i supported the other friend. And i guess he felt a little betrayal going on, but i just felt like michel was a better candidate for the 15 million haitians in haiti. Next year marks the 20th anniversary of that iconic album the score. What does that mean for you . Will there be a fugees reunion . I dont know. Thats the p. C. Answer, i dont know. Im not a politician. I dont know. All right. Well, talk a little bit about the history of the fugees. Theris was just this group that had music on his head. It changes everything. Yeah, i had great bandmates. Wycliff jean, lauryn hill. We wanted to represent haitians and give haiti a better look, a positive look. Thing with fugees stood for. And the music at the time, the world responded to it. Listen, its been an honor and privilege to be able to do that. And that helped me to go do what i did for michel years later back in 2010. Glt oria steinham just released her latest book in 20 years. And we sat down with ms. Steinham to talk about my life on the road. Gloria, thank you for joining us. We know you have a busy schedule. But we are excited about your travels on the road. Yo pur first book in more than 20 years. I found that surprising. Why write about your life on the road . Its been the most important part of my life yet i was not writing about it at all. People or issues along the way. Suddenly i realized this is a way of life and something we all need. Its in our genes and bones that as human beings we follow the crops, the weather, we need both a voyage and a home. Have you been journaling at all . No. Its interesting is that i do not have to its so intense being on the road, i have never been able to keep a jurn. And even when i try to keep notes they are the wrong notes. So i depend on my memory to kind of selfselect what is important. And then i have to go back and research again and talk to the people who were there. Im amazed at your memory, really. I dont know if i could put the book together. You talk about your gypsy fathers life and your childhood with your mother and sister traveling with him, living out of trailers, washing up in motels, never settling down. You never imagined you would begin your story with his story. Why . Well, you know, i had rebelled against that life, i thought. How we all say, im not going to be anything like my parents and it turns out we are . So you know, i dont think i realized how much it had influenced until i sat down to write. And thats one of the rewards of writing you find out about yourself. And what did you find out about yourself as you were writing . I think in my ways i have been trying to balance two things. One, my mother had no journey of her own long before i was born. She had given up her very unusual and promising career as a journalist. So she didnt really have a journey. And my father, in his rebellion, i guess, i dont know, but he only had no home. Its a balance between home and the road that i want and many of us want. Over 20 years, two decades, you talked about spending only eight consecutive days at home. Is there anything that have learned a long the way to apply today today. I did learn the importance of birds nests. So after many years of treating my apartment like a hotel room with a bunch of cardboard boxes and possessions and so forth around. I would love for them to make a home that i love to come home too too. It really feels like home, so it was about achieving that, that balance. And i did not have that, partly because women are told to culturally, make a home for your you dont make a home for yourself as a single woman. And you do and must. As you crisscross the countries like individual folks as well. You have spoken to students, priests, taxi drivers, bikers, there are so many stories to sum up here, but have you really sat down to think about one perhaps story that stuck out more for you than others . No, im not sure i can pick up one its not really wrong, but you have to listen to that persons stories. And you might say democracy begins with balancing listening and talking. So if you are in the situation where you if you have power, you need to talk. And if you have less power, you need to talk, which is not easy either. And theres a kind of magic when it is in balance and youre learning because you empathize with each other and learn about the other persons life. Theres a lot to be learned by just closing your mouth, right . I wish politicians would have to have two years on the road as a requisite to any political office. Because they would stop saying the American People as if its one clump and see the incredible divorcety. Specifically in yours book you talked about traveling here why advocate for that when i say im going to australia or zambia, people say, thats great. But then i say im traveling the same amount of time in this country and they are like, it must be that i am inferior to new york or whatever. But i dont think they recognize the incredible richness and universally known people here in new york. We started studying when columbus started, which is such a mistake. One last question for you, gloria, for those of us who are travel across the record and across america. What piece of advice would you give to them on how to get started basically . Well, i think almost all of us can afford it one way or another. But i would say spend at least a couple days in a row as soon as you leave your door, just be open to whatever happens. Well remember that. To take it all in when we step out the door. Gloria steinem, appreciate it. Great to hear from her again. First book in 20 years. Wow. Coming up on today in new york, nothing says fall like cider. Well celebrate cider city i was not aware of how much acidity was in my diet. I was so focused on making good food choices, i had no idea that it was damaging the enamel of my teeth. I wanted to fix it, i wanted to fix it right away. My dentist recommended pronamel. He said that pronamel can make my teeth stronger, that it was important, that that is something i could do each day to help protect the enamel of my teeth. Pronamel is definitely helping rme to lead the life that nothing says fall like apples and new york is a weeklong event starring cider, if you will. Here to tell us about cider brews is carl from cider mill in new york. Thank you for being here. Thank you for having me, gus. This accompanies food and meals and theres a tasting menu that comes along. All week theres over 45 restaurants, menus, pubs featuring cider. They are pairing it with food. They have cider makers coming in. All over the city, every kind of venue, every style of cider offering special pairings and food items. Now we think of pairings, i think of wine. We talk more about beer now. I have never thought about it with cider, is it the sort of thing the donuts, yes, but cheeses as well bring out the flavor. Absolutely. Traditionally cider made in countries like spain have cuisines built around the cider. Go to northern france and enjoy cheeses like this from lucys way washed in a cider from up in the Hudson Valley. Or this lorenzos cheese soaked in cider. This is traditional in northern france. They have some to go great with their funky ciders. Here in new york we are reviving this tradition and adding value to something thats already been available in the Hudson Valley. This is a big history from our colonial settlers to all that. What do you contribute this renaissance and interest . Up in the Hudson Valley, theres been these producers of apples for a long time. And the economic challenges of just being an apple farmer are merely related to a great degree by doing the value added product like cider. We have an organization in glennwood up in Hudson Valley. Its a cider incubator notforprofit focusing on helping farmers grow. And they have worked with the governor to help us get organized and get some funding to bring these new products to market in an organized way. And in terms of the city and even jobs, what is going on at the Hudson Valley. It looks like good and drink. Its a destination for a lot of people looking to start businesses and hire people. What are you seeing up there . It drives tourism because people like to go and eat and drink. When you have highquality food and beverages, it changes the game. And every kind of business, ours, for example, where a 100yearold family farm, for 100 years they have been a successful Farm Business and we have added the element with cider and hired three or four more people in the last year or two. It helps remove the economy. Im seeing a bunch of bottles here. What are the different forgive me, i dont know a lot about it. Different flavors where its like wine, some are heavier and sweeter. Its the wine of the apple word. People think of cider as the beer alternative but it is more like a wine as you press the fresh fruit. You get juice and all these, farmbased businesses are using fresh apple juice to ferment. How do you treat this . The red label can age in perpetuity. If its in a can, drink it sooner because the can is a different product. But it is like wine in the same way. These are all made in new york . The laws were changed recently to help spur this growth. In the last three years we went from a handful of cider makers to over 60 in new york. Now you see new york events, later we have a free event on orchard street called the Lower East Side festival. Orchard street, appropriately named. And we have all these cider makers and eventuales going on around the city. Jimmy and so what is your favorite . If people are familiar with the can style, which is nice and sweet. That comes as a sixpack. Or try Something Like this different, it comes in a champagnestyle bottle and you will see its a little cloudy and will be dry. A lot of people are surprised by that when you taste something. It is like champagne when it is fermented. Thats very nice. Not too sweet either. It reminds me more of a very dry champagne. Thats one style youre going to see. Youll also see styles, this is made exactly like a champagne and a little sweeter. Wow. Youll see different styles across the board. And those are appropriate where the vendors show off their cider. This goes through the 15th. It does. Well check the forecast including our top stories and this reporter two pedestrians are injured and three others are dead after accidents last night. There was one in denver that went to a yoga studio where veterans can come together to where the veterans get the sense of comraderie. Are you seeing that from this Younger Generation in iraq and afghanistan . It is incredibly important. You have to meet the veterans where they are. And this is definitely a different generation of veterans that are very sophisticated and raised on the 12hour news cycle. So they understand and have natural leadership skills honed in the military. Some need basic services and help in the area of health care, homelessness and employment, etsz. But a lot of them are high functions and need to be helped where they are. That means giving them services and support they need to advance and to contribute to society at large. Veterans want to come home to reintegrate in society and we need to support them in that. We can support them coming out to this parade on wednesday. We expect over 500,000 observers. So this is a national impact. The largest celebration of service in the united states.
