New yorks finest have a case of the nypd blues, low morale according to a new survey by their union, the pba. On a scale of one to ten, officers who took the survey rated their morale at a 2. 5. 87 said the city has become less safe in the two years since mayor de blasio took office. The mayor insists overall crime is down almost 6 . Hes begin his officers new bulletproof vests and Better Technology technology. Theyre continuing to drive down crime. They are working aggressively to get guns off our streets. They have a lot to be proud of and were very proud of them. But when new yorkers hear police dont feel safe, they sure dont even. Its not good. The overwhelming majority of officers surveyed said they 96 of officers said the relationship between police and the public has gotten worse and that more new yorkers are resisting arrest. According to the pba, 6,000 of its 24,000 members responded to the survey. Mayor de blasio has had a rocky relationship with police, some of whom feel he does not have their backs and turned their backs on him after two officers were killed on duty in their patrol car. The union has also been angling for bigger raises. And officers have now been working without a contract since 2012. I dont put a lot of stock in that survey. While the mayors reaction was dismiss sieve ivedismissive, it was quite different than Police Commissioner brattons reaction. It echoes the survey that we shared with you back in 2014. Bratton explains thats one administration is retraining officers, improving their equipment and increasing patrol strength for the first time in more than a decade. Some believe, though, its going to take a new contract and a pay raise to bring morale back. Crews still working to re repair this water main break that has left some hoboken neighborhoods without water. Tonight we investigate why these breaks are happening more often and why it seems that not much is being done to prevent them. Suez water telling us People Living in hoboken should expect water main breaks to continue at an average of two a month until the city replaces the aging pipes. Theres obviously a major infrastructure problem that theres no funding for. Reporter the agreement made with suez only allows for about that leaves little left over for sfruf infrastructure improvements. Simply they do not have the dollars to invest in the system. Reporter the contract with suez has eight years to go. In a statement hoboken mayor says we have hired financial and engineering experts and are look into options to either renegotiate the existing contract or bid out a new contract. Meantime, a spokesperson for suez says crews continue to work dill igently to make repairs. We have to Work Together to work with the crews to look at the infrastructure and see what needs to be repaired, make the recommendations and then act on that accordingly.
