Infant death syndrome. It is one cause for sudden unexplained deaths. Sids usually involves a situation where an apparently healthy baby less than a year old dies without any determining whether a death is due to sids can be complicated and usually involves an autopsy and investigation of the death scene, a review of clinical history. Sudden unexplained infant suffocation. The risk factors for sids are sleep environment. Adam how common is it . Dr. Chan in the u. S. There are many of these are unexplained. As i mentioned, some risk factors are the same. Last year in the u. S. There were about 1500 cases of sids in the it is the leading cause of death months of age. This . There is a matrix of things that what causes this . Dr. Chan it is not entirely clear. Combination of factors, environmental, developmental, that involves control of the heart rate and breathing and sleep and awake cycles. There have been studies that have looked at risk factors for putting babies at increased risk of sids. One of the strongest risk factors is putting babies to sleep on their stomachs or face down, that is not recommended. Mother s smoking during pregnancy or babies being exposed to environments with tobacco smoke increases the risk of sids. Having babies sleep on soft surfaces are with loose clothing or material in the crib, cosleeping or sharing a common bed can be a risk factor. There has been investigation of whether overheating is involved. Adam what is one of the number one things a parent can do . It is a Lightning Strike in some ways. Dr. Chan we recommend parents follow the American Academy of pediatrics guidelines could the mother should get routine prenatal care and avoid smoking or using tobacco.
