We have the glazing on top of the snow. The sidewalk has been cleared another dusting of that sleet. That s pretty much the way it s going to be for the rest of this morning, this back and forth between sleet and maybe even some freezing rain from time to time. It is 19 degrees outside right now. I know most folks with limited or no meteorological background whatsoever are saying, 19 degrees, why isn t it snowing . It is because we have a ton of warm air aloft right now. That is causing the snowflakes to melt as they hit the warmer air aloft. Then when they hit the colder air, they refreeze and turned into sleet. And turn into sleet. If we had just a little bit of cold air, that s when it would turn into freezing rain. It remains very slippery here in concord. I am meteorologist a. J. Burnett. Back to you guys. I was just checking out doppler radar. There is a certain setting that it can be set to. It is what is called a correlation coefficient. I know that probably doesn t mean a lot to a whole lot of you. What i can see from it is that precipitation is melting above 6000 feet to 15,000 feet. What that tells me is, ok, we have that push of warm air coming in a loft in aloft, where the snow melts above our heads, and that causes it to turn into a raindrop. Are standing, 19, 20, 21 degrees , depending on your location, that raindrop will tend to refreeze. You have one chance to be a snowflake. Once you have melted, you have to turn into something frozen appellate of sleet or some freezing rain a pellet of sleet or some freezing rain. Traffic in hooksett moving slowly. This is not a giant storm. However, it is the first one of the year. We have kind of been lulled into a false sense of security. Christmas day, it was nearing 60plus degrees.
