everything except tell time. many owners have been complaining the phones didn't spring forward to daylight savings time. in fact, some fell back another hour making that owner two hours behind. the iphone clock had trouble on new year's day. remember that, at the end of the daylight savings time in november, we had troubles with that as well. we will talk to john about what's going on with the iphone and pretty sure he has an idea. we will talk about spring cleaning because it's something we tend to do this time of year. kind of shaking off the cold and winter and make our homes more homely. and for that, we have to clean the electronics. good morning. >> good morning. >> and the first thing that amazes me windex can be bad. >> exactly. and the same thing for the generic glass cleaners. glass is different from the screen. a lot of electronics have even if it looks like shiny glass, it to not. there's a protective coating and ammonia and alcohol in the things can crowed that and you can end up -- cay road that and you can end -- corrode that and you can end up with nasty lines and residue on the screen. >> some cleaners build corrosion and build up on the electronics over the course of time. >> absolutely. they can. >> when you talked about the dos and don'ts of spring cleaning for our electronics, you say start outside in. >> yeah. you know, you will want to start just dusting down you know, for the most part, you can use a very lightly damp cloth to wipe off the residue and everything. but as you move toward inside, it is just as important as the outside because a lot of electronics generate heat. you may notice the metal pins which is meant to dissipate the heat. lower the heat the devices, better it operates. that's where the -- you have to be careful to make sure you do it scwently because the fans and moving parts are in there. you don't want to have them break apart. >> not only the physical cleaning and the removal of dust, but you might want to think in terms of babbing up the devices because what's inside the computer literally inside the computer is just as important and we need to keep the information safe. >> absolutely. a lot of times, people come in and ask how and you i do need to back up? and it sound hokey but the stock response is hop are you willing to lose? because if you are willing to lose everything you've done today, you only have to back up once a day. but if you want to -- if you want to back up you have to look for a more invasive solution something like time machine or something like that that does backups all the time. >> you've showed us the caned air and why not to use windex. with a can we use? >> the things are specialized products for cleaning. you have specialized wipes and some come in individual containers like moist towelettes and same thing in a bigger container has all our -- you just pull it out. if you have a spray that is designed for cleaning screens on tvs you don't want the cloth for the tv, you use antitantic cloth. if you end up with paper towels or things like that, they will leave lint and dust behind. and you may not notice it right away, but if you are spending your time in front of the things, staring at the screen, you will start to notice these things. >> dusty screen here on the laptop. you want to demonstrate? i don't want to ask you to demonstrate with the windex but with a do you use? would you use the wipedown cloth or go after this with a little something a little wetter? >> >> it has the residue, you need to get a little bit of. >> look at that. >> something wet. >> yeah. it has the nasty residue. this is what starts to happen when you use the ammonia based cleaners. it coroads the away the cover. >> in terms of using cleaning the iphone, you want to clean this, is it best to go with the wiping cloth and wipe it down? >> the phones we have them with us all the time up against our skin and they can get dearthy. so make sure it's good idea to wipe it down frequently especially if you have a cold or something like that. >> can we show this screen one more time because this is kind of gross. >> this is what the ammonia does. >> that's what it does. >> it will strip away the screen there, and it will be able to get -- makes it harder to see. >> this is on our website to check out late he ever. john a pleasure having you in. >> thanks. >> continued success. megan. >> thanks so much. well, with each passing day, more images and reports of the devastation in japan following friday's earthquake but now there's growing fears of
