giving day, many of you are participating in the turkey trot. an annual event towards a great cause. we will hear more about that and there's time to get involved. it's a great way to go out for a run before you stuff your face. we will tell you all about the turkey trot and also, the maryland zoo. you have not had the opportunity to go check it out. >> i've seen that rabbit. >> they have brought in a giant rabbit. they have a great program coming up called breakfast with santa and there's so many great things going on at the zoo. they have wonderful programs all year-round so we will from last week, we had you ready for two stuffing recipes yesterday it was a sweet potatoe casserole and today dosh apple cake coming up a little later. we got the entire gamut for you covered. you take care of the turkey, and everything else is taken care into we went grocery shopping for our thanksgiving fixings yesterday and we got home and realized no turkey. so, that's on the list. >> it's all right. before we get to the fun of the day, we want to tell you about a consume are alert. what toys could be trouble under the christmas tree. we are thinking about christmas shopping. we will find out what consumer advocates say about this later on this morning when the u.s. public interest research groups released the annual trouble in toyland report. video from the latest from last year's toys, the group considers the most dangerous for children. the report list is what researchers say are toys that post choking hazards and toxic chemicals and other problems. something you certainly want to look out for. this is one-- since we are on the subject of shopping, most will say they hate the dressing rooms when the lighting is so severe. but soon, that could all be a thing of the past. some of the stores are trying to something a little new this holiday season. abc2 news checked it out. >> reporter: in the battle for your holiday bucks, retailers have plenty of gimmicks. there are the early bird specials, the clearance clearance priet closed but when you can get it online, why bother braving the crowds at the stores. wait until you see this. at macy's in midtown manhattan, retailers tested out the magic mirror. one part fitting room and one part online catalog. geared at getting shoppers more and more dissatisfied with retail shopping back in the stores. first, you take your picture. and in my case the mediocre one and scroll through all the clothes in the store's catalog. with a flick, a flick, a flick of the wrist, i virtually put them on. yes, that part could use fine tuning. and then stretch them out to fit me. but here is where it gets really cool. not only does the computer pick other accessories that look good with your outfit like a personal shopper, but it lets you ask your friend in realtime what they think. >> you can save this to an e-mail and have your friend pick it up and look at the session you are in and say i like that pink dress or the black skirt or whatever it happens to be. >> reporter: j.c. penney has taken the concept one step further. putting everything they sell from clothes to electronics to furniture in the five more fixtures. they have been in stores across the nation for a year and the company is planning on adding even more. >> i think the consumer now is expecting to have options when they walk into a store multilevel options of purchasing, and this really brings that platform into the store. >> reporter: the interactive mirrors and e mailable info may seem high tech, 73% of global shoppers think it will be in dressing rooms by 2015. and in other words, finding the clothes on the rack this holiday season and taking your clothes off to try them on is just so last season. abc news. >> i is dimming out the sun and clouds will thicken and bring in some of that back towards the west. want to highlight the wind forecast. southwesterly flow pumping in warm weather approaching 60 at this hour. but that will give way to a shift of the wind and the cold front. you can see how the arrows do turn direction with the west to northwesterly flow getting in here for tonight and tomorrow. it looks like a much cooler setup even for thanksgiving. we could mix in showers, the real rain with the thanks giving event will be after most of the festivities. that's good news for us. this's the cold front to the west. and cold air in the other side, but the surge of warm wind we deal with this morning. into the mid part of the day. around the nation, active weather pattern. our front extend to the gulf coast just west of new orleans. and it pushes on in through looks like mississippi, alabama and getting 4e6y -- heavy rains across be central sections of -- sections of tennessee. look at this mess to the west. they had record snow in seattle yesterday. and for them, 2 1/2 inches is a big deal because by the coast, they rarely get that real surge of cold air. it's usually up in the mountains. in the mountains, blizzard conditions expected with a few feet across the ski resorts and central and northern rockies. snow and ice problems extending to the northern plains and thanksgiving outlook will shift the pattern eastbound. look at this. from 50s to 60s this morning to single digits and below zero in montana. it's going modify by the time it gets herech today, 66 for be prepared for major backups near the maryland, delaware border. construction crews at newark toll plaza in delaware and officials say that could lead to traffic backups as far as harford county. that's 20 miles. officials urge you to leave as early as possible as wednesday. and it's expected to be particularly busy out there on the roads. now if you are headed to grand more's house, you need to take care of your car but just like we said, leave early and take care of yourself and in the process and get plenty rest before getting behind the wheel. regina with triple a is in and is wide awake to give us tips. we talked about people getting their car ready. having the kid taken care of, and we often neglect ourselves because we have so much on the minds. >> absolutely. this time of the year probably more so than ever. you get enough sleep. aaa our foundation for traffic safety recently conducted a study that found that although 85% of motorists say that it's totally unacceptable to drive while drowsy, excuse me, that is unacceptable for that to happen. a vast majority, 40%, acknowledge they themselves have driven while sleepy. so it's a very dangerous act and we want to make motorests aware of it. get enough rest. >> and you talked about drowsy driving as slip of the tongue driving while drunk but there are similarities between the two aren't there? >> very much so. just like alcohol, or drugs, driving while drowsy certainly can impact your reaction time, your awareness, and your overall judgment. so, again, very similar effects and unfortunately, sometimes the same tragic results. >> we have tips for you this morning. and in addition to getting plenty of sleep, doctors will tell you you need between 6 and 8 hours of sleep. that's a good rule of thumb. might want to err toward the side of 8 hours before the long drives. but the next tip there, schedule breaks. >> absolutely. if you are driving for a long distance as many people will be during the thanksgiving holiday, encourage motorists to stop at least every 100 miles or every two hours or so. stretch their legs and refresh themselves and get back on the road. >> and treat your travel times like it's your job. you want to work on a normal schedule. >> absolutely. so, that's to say if you are normally asleep at night you don't, although we do want motorists to avoid the congestion, if you are asleep at night don't make it the time you are driving because that's not what your body say customed to. >> you want to stay overnight. and this is something men with guilty of. we want to push through to the destination because we can rest on the backside. >> absolutely. not necessarily true. you want to take the breaks and it's great to drive straight through but if it means maybe spending the night over at a hotel or somewhere to make sure you get the rest, that's probably better. >> err on the side of caution. if you are sleepy,. >> pull over. absolutely. stop, pull over switch 15-year- old jennifer claybrook. she disappeared one march afternoon telling her mom she was going out for a jog. abc2 news brian kuebler explain where and when police found her. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: at john carol every year they remember the memorial is peppered with a pictures of classmates and staff that have passed on. but in a tale not used to make willing headlines, the story of jennifer claybrook refuse to the fade. >> it shocked me, and it is still-- it's overwomens me to think about it. >> reporter: patty murphy 19 campus minister as teacher she knew every student every staff member. jenny, though, jenny is more than just a memory. it was the spring of 1983. >> they were in shock, just totally in shock. >> reporter: jennifer claybrook was a freshman at john carol. your typical teen always challenging her parents. constantly fought with her mother, sometimes even ran away. >> but without fail, she always contacted mom. >> reporter: on the evening of march 4th she told her mother she was going out for a run. at first w. jenny didn't come home, her mother assumed she ran away again. 48 hours past, and a normal childhood indes cryings was a panic. her mother called police. for four days, police scoured the town look for jenny and it was only by gut an officer found her. off duty, the officer close to the investigation went out for a walk near where he knew jenny's group would visit. >> they went walking in the area he lived in the area to an abandoned property that was within close proximity to where jennifer lived, and that's when he found her. >> reporter: jenny's body, lifeless, sitting upright against a fence strangled. >> she had died from strangulation. and basically was left there and abandoned. >> reporter: detectives was one of the original investigators in the case. he remembers going out to the scene. it was a cold rainy afternoon. >> i can guarantee he was with the people there that day and they hoped for a different outcome. >> reporter: in the days and weeks that followed, detectives poured all their resources into finding jenny's killer. they he knew jenny was running with an older crowd. detectives tell us even adults. the group often partyed in the very same spot where jenny was found. >> immediately, potential sus spent emerged. >> reporter: dehe -- suspects emerged. >> reporter: they looked at the way she cas killed, strangled and choked to death and left in a upright position. it's or a lay crime of passion often the deadly results of an argument when the killer snaps. >> what ever the relationship was, something deteriorateed for that moment and emotional levels rose to out of control. and then, minutes later, jennifer was dead. >> reporter: but after weeks turned into months, and months into years, jenny's murder remained unsolved. eventually, her case went cold. >> the fact it's cold case means that it happened a long time ago and we don't have an arrest, but it doesn't mean we forgot about it. >> reporter: sergeant swam has left the department. and the case has been hand over to cold case detective ed smith. >> it's difficult. it's very difficult. it's an emotional thing. >> reporter: smith has invested himself in to the case often reading the case file at home retracing every last step following up every last lead. he often goes back to the scene. >> we are a hundred yards behind where the house existed. >> reporter: hoping to find answers to a case that continues to haunt detectives old and new. >> we have dreams for our children, and at 15, my gosh, you are at the threshold of the rest of your life and that was stolen from jennifer and her mother. >> reporter: stolen from a grieving mother and a community that 27 years later still remembers. >> jennifer lee claybrook. >> when her name is read and picture is flashed, we remember we don't know what happened to her. >> reporter: her lone yearbook photo a remind easer young life taken. a story that still needs an ending. in fluffier but this is how big they get typically. >> you said somebody could technically have this as a house neat they could. rabbits can make really good pets if you work with them. they can be litter box trained and they are prettyee affectionate. i like the phlegmish giants because kids can't smush them. people get the teeny rabbits to have as pets, and they are scared to death of your children that come running at them. so happy to see them but they are prey animals. you sturdy rabbit and that's the best option for a pet. if you want a rabbit, contact the house rabbits society. >> she is a cool girl. enormous. >> she is one of the animals that you can see at the zoo. and you can see her on zoom mobiles and she may be at the new event coming up in december. >> tell us about that because i think a lot of people don't think about going to the zoo in the winter but you are open. >> we will be open this year. it's the first time in a few years we will be open this wient winter. we have events throughout the winter. we have the new winter hours. we want you to check the website every day to make sure we will be open. it's weather dependent and we are thinking thursday through mayorton. >> they are 5k runs and start a variety of times. you can go to the website and check out the times that the races start. it's become really family tradition throughout central maryland. >> it is. what do you hear from people who participate. this is going on for years. so, year after year a lot of same people and same face show up. what do you hear about how much fun it is. >> it's amazing. we have people who live in california and come all the way out here to visit family and participate in the run every single year. they just enjoy it. it's a family event. everybody comes out. you will have, you know, i think last year we had one group that had 13 family members that participated. >> and how much does it help the program. does it allow several kids to go to camp and how much does it help? >> last year, the harford county race raised 30,000 dollars and towson raised over 50,000. >> in one day. >> yes. >> wow. >> in one day. >> awesome the turkey trot. can people register if they are my mind is not made up, maybe won't get in front of the television and eat all day. how can people still get involved. >> they can come to any one of the centers and register at the centers all the way up through thursday morning. thursday morning they can register at the race. >> okay. so all the information is up there on the screen. if you want more information, it really is a fun run. and it's not long. it's something that everybody can do. you don't have to run. you can walk it. >> we have walks as well. so you know usually a run and then a family walk or fun walk. >> probably about 40 years old i would think. >> how long you and your husband been married. >> 40 years. >> 40 years. 40 years of wonderful. congratulationses. >> i have to give credit to my mother's old neighbor who gave us the original recipe. >> right here. >> uh-huh. >> what do we have and what do we have to look forward to. >> you start out with the apples placing them up and add to the about five tablespoons and sugar two teaspoons of sin mom and let that marinate. and then you mix your dry ingredients together which would be your flour and your sugar, and not the sugar the flour and bake powder and salt. set that aside. and then. >> these are ultra digsal ingredients. >> right. >> things you have at home. >> right. >> and that has to heap lot in putting this together because we want to make a great cake and we don't vet to get exotic or go to specialty stores to find ingredients. >> the time is spent cutting up the apples and there's no icing so it makes it simpler. >> that's where we are. apples are diced and we have everything that is cinnamon. >> it's just cinnamon and sugar around winds up sort of marinating the apple as they leech out juice. >> and this is sort of the -- is this where we call a bunt cake. >> aid tube or angel food pan and the best are the remmovable core. and they are still produced by cuisainart and fabber. >> wiewf that and you dump and pour. >> the steps involve a layering on batters on the bottom and aels and that's three times and end with batter. so tough get that in the bottom a little first. and it's a heavy batter so. >> i was going to say. that looks thick then a traditional cake batter. >> it is and you have to spread it around because you are putting in about a 4th to begin with. when you get that in the bottom. >> even it out. >> as much as you can. >> in 40 years of this recipe, 40 plus years of this recipe, have you changed anything. >> no it's been the same. it's been the same. when i asked my old neighbor the other day where it originally came from she thinks it came from one of her children's mother-in-laws. and many years ago. >> so we will put the apples in and layer it that way right? we will look at temperatures pushing into the low 60s. around central and southern maryland. easton at 60, 62 annapolis. and we are lag behind in towson and sykesville and ellicott city at 48. we are looking at the warm air surging ahead of the frontal bondry. line of rain is break up to the west. but there's the threat as it does bump into the warm and moisten viernlt as some areas did have fog this morning. we will hold some of the showers together. we have to keep that in mind from the lunch hour through about mid-afternoon. after that, we will shift our winds from the warm flow this morning to a much colder setup and that colder setup will have reinforcing shots of cold air through the holiday weekend. from lunchtime into four we expect showers and once that swings through, we clear it out tonight and temperatures do tank back into the mid-30s. nothing unusual but a change of the warm pattern we have right now. and computer models are a little split for thursday but appears as if rain is going to try to move in during the morning hours. main batch to the west is showing up here. i believe a warm front will swing through and that could enhance the east wind off the chesapeake and atlantic to make it wet n morning with a band of rain and we do expect a heavier rain with the next storm to come in on friday morning and then really take our dib into the weekend. 66 today. that's the two degree guarantee and there will be the threat of an afternoon shower but this evening and tonight we clear out and we will drop it back down to 36. tomorrow, temperatures will aim for about 50. that's around baltimore. do expect 40s mainly outside the beltway and we will be a chilly day and a sunny to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. back 38 overnight and looks like that warm air trying to push in here. but really a struggle with the developing showers on thanksgiving day. the heavier rain on friday will lead to falling temperatures through the 40s and behind the storm is low 40s and yes, charlie, maybe your first state of maryland snow shower. >> and i do look forward to the snow. i am like you. >> oh. >> your cars will be slashed. >> probably. before we go, we want to leave you a story. every parent know monsters are under the bed or in the closet responsible for sleepless nights. >> as john berman tells us, one little boy recruited his scary friends to help him become a fighter himself against something even far scarier. >> reporter: this is a monster, one of the monsters good monsters doing great things. so who is aiden? a face behind the scary looking clown mask. >> you are goofy admit it. you are a little goofy. you are just a little goofy. >> reporter: aiden is a 5-year-old boy in clearwater kansas who likes to dress up and loves to draw pictures of monsters. they don't make you scared. >> no. >> reporter: does anything make you scared? >> no. >> reporter: not even cancer. just two month age was diagnosed with leukemia. >> i started crying and my son started crying too. >> for five hours we thought it was death sentence. >> reporter: it was not and his cancer treatable. though it requires chemotherapy antibiotics and painful trips to the hospital. aidan drew me a picture. what's this?
