end of october. this year, it's october 3rd. >> look at you. going to buy some cards. >> we have a big event coming up to help lupus. this is a great event. scotty garceau, his daughter, we are going to go out there and raise money again. >> great cause. >> yes. >> coming up this morning: we're going to talk about tomatoes. do you like them? >> c'mon. >> you're italian. my husband doesn't like tomatoes, but he likes tomato sauce, pizza. crystal is here from wegmans. she's going to talk about adding tomatoes your plate. >> it's national resume month. we'll talk about resume tips on how to keep them updated and nice and fresh. let's get to our hot topic today. remember when you used to check your hotel room and your mom scoured the sheets for bedbugs? bedbugs are biting back big time. not only have the critters invaded new york, but they're now here. next week, the baltimore city health department will begin a series of community meetings on voiding and treating bedbugs. just as abc2 news sheryl connor tells us, the blood-sucking critters have turned up at frederick county at a library. >> reporter: most of us heard the old childhood saying "don't let the bedbugs bite" and fortunately they never did, but that's changing. 446 bedbugs found in 2010. that's up from 83 last year. they leave behind red marks on the skin. to combat the problem, the city will hold a series of public meetings, starting with the question, what are bedbugs? >> i don't really know. i guess little creatures. >> reporter: people in frederick county are curious about the creatures after they turned up at a library, workers fumigated all branches in the system after bedbugs were tucked inside books in urbana. library officials say material from the book drop and carts from the building's circulation room have been locked inside a truck parked outdoors. so the sun can bake the bugs. >> immediately bagged up all the materials in any proximity to that book. >> reporter: some parents are thinking twice about bringing the kids back too soon. >> a little nervous. the three of them were in story time on the rug playing with different things in there. >> reporter: the bedbug problem claimed a high-profile name, nike. the store near new york's fifth avenue shut down due to bugs. they turned up inside google's offices and the empire state building. >> it has everything to do with trucking. we have found that bedbugs are hitching rides, being transported back and forth into offices, into stores. >> reporter: the national infestation prompted this bedbug conference in illinois, including an expo of pest-sighting products. they're moving beyond beds. >> i don't want them in our house, that's all i know. >> if you want to know more ways to prevent bedbugs and how to treat them, baltimore city has organized a series of meetings, the next one will be scheduled for next wednesday at noon. for the situation in frederick county, exterminators will treat all of the counties eight libraries. the patron who dropped off the book they brought back was infested with bedbugs. >> so gross, isn't it? >> over the weekend, i went to a hardware store in canton where i live in o'donnell street. little mom and pop shop, the man and woman working there said they've been bombarded with people coming in for sprays for bedbugs because so many people in the neighborhood have them. i said "what if i have them?" they said "you'll know." . i think it's a great idea the city's having a meeting to let people know what they are. >> do you want people to stop traveling to new york for a while? do you think they'll stop going to manhattan? >> no way. >> here's justin. >> we have summer-like weather here, right? we have ourselves maybe some of the heat to help out. put everything outside today, next couple of days. there'll be one little caveat, we'll talk about that in a moment. we're talking about the end of summer today, sort of. the autumnal equinox, 11:09 tonight. warming up between 85 and 90 degrees over the next three afternoons. 52 days at 90 so far this year. we may add to that list before the week is done. we're now up to 69 in baltimore. mid- to upper 70s once you push down to the south. the real heat is sitting far away. we should make it to 76 in the afternoon. we could very well reach that before this hour is done. we'll be warming up in a hurry as we pump in a warm air mass. probably not record territory. this day mark in 1999. sunrise at 7:40. we're looking at daylight shrinking up here. we will have full use of the sunlight, plus the warm air mass to our south, plus the fact that the sun will dominate a good chunk of the day. clouds back towards the west, those had start filtering in this direction with the frontal boupdry. showers and thunderstorms toward the afternoon. it'll really about the heat. temperatures across the deep south, let's show them to you. upper 90s. memphis hit 100 on monday. 98 yesterday. you'll see widespread 90s from atlanta, 95, 92 charlotte up towards detroit, they hit 90 yesterday. we were stuck in the upper 70s, near normal. we'll change that. that heat builds in our direction. it'll modify a little bit. while we're in the upper 60s, there are widespread 70s and warmer temperatures to be had towards the southwest. at least early afternoon, mostly sunny skies, clouds will build in, we'll watch a line of showers and thunderstorms try to approach the mountains to the west and maybe clip the western suburbs late in the day after 4:00 or 5:00 until early this evening. 10 degrees above normal and not nearly as cool overnight. the full moon will appear full overnight. lows back down to 66 degrees. jumped ahead of the schedule. we're back at 85 north and west. that'll be the better chance of having scattered showers and thunderstorms. if you're watching us on the eastern shore, you'll probably see a dry day with temperatures about 87 in easton, skies turning partly cloudy. friday we'll talk about that in the next half hour. >> think people will stop going to the bronx? >> maybe. >> all right, when it comes to getting a job these days, you need to take advantage of every advantage you can get. especially on your resume. ravens players are known for their generosity in giving back to their community. one player helped a local family adjust to their new way of life. susan g. komen race for the cure, race to your computer and sign up to be one of the largest events in the nation to battle breast cancer. we'll be right back. tax on everything you buy? that's in andy harris' unfair tax plan. 23% sales tax. a 23% sales tax will cut my business in half. would be devastating. andy harris' 23% sales tax absolutely makes no sense. 23% sales tax would really make things unaffordable. that's too high for the average american out here. i don't know how we would manage it really. don't like that idea. we can't afford andy harris' idea. i'm frank kratovil and i approve this message. with the navy midshipman playing notre dame in 2012, the fighting irish will have a real home field advantage. the two programs will be played in dublin, ireland. now to the story of the fanny family. they're your typical family, but for almost a year, dad has been confined to a wheelchair. abc2 news lamont williams has a story on how the family is getting a well-deserved gift from ravens running back willis mcgahee. >> reporter: we have a connection on the football field, just being part of a great group of guys, i love to play sports. >> reporter: joe sclefani is a former football player and ravens fan. a disc in his lower back bulged and compressed his spinal cord. the pressure from the bulging disc, along with an abscess, left joe quadriplegic. for joe, his wife monica and two daughters, living in a home not handicap accessible made life more difficult. >> we're in desperate need of these renovations to our home to make it liveable, to make our lives normal. >> reporter: during joe's playing days, noway knowing the football he played would be the tie that binds his recovery. a makeover was made on joe's home to make it accessible to his knees. >> they'll see their daddy not confined to a medical bed or a wheelchair, they'll see daddy in a wide open space, interacting with them and having the ability. and you don't make a difference, there's something wrong if you have the ability. >> i know what it is to be on the outside of the game. >> reporter: for that, joe is grateful. >> c'mon, that's a great story. remember, about 2.5 months ago, the girls who were part of the boys hope girls hope were surprised. megan was right there doing it all. extreme makeover home edition. the time is here to move that bus. sunday, extreme makeover debuts its eighth session where we can finally see the inside of the home, but before extreme makeover moves that bus, we're going to go behind the build with a special one-hour show right here on abc2. megan? we have a couple new things, first of all a team tailgating area this year. teams that have reached a certain threshold, we'll get in touch with those teams, then we also have a school challenge, for new schools, the school that has the most participants and one that raises the most money. they'll get a banner to walk in the race. those are two of the newest things. >> for those who have done the race before, there are certainly things that stick with them. the parade of think, i always get choked up seeing. how would you describe this whole experience to somebody who's never done it before? >> the race itself is very moving. you see survivors there, you see people with signs on their backs, walking in memory of or in celebration of. the parade of pink kind of kicks things off in the morning. that is, all the survivors, and then people that are also celebrating and so it's a real celebratory event and they walk to moving music, and walk past the main stage. it's a very emotional kind of journey. >> we've been looking at video of the race. that's a huge crowd that comes out. how does maryland do in terms of raising money for breast cancer? >> we're one of the largest affiliates, even though we're small maryland. we're one of the largest, the top ten in the country. we estimate that we'll have 30,000 people there and our goal is $3.2 million so we can beat last year. we're a pretty big race compared to others throughout the country. >> what is it that gets to you about the race? >> i think whenever i see the little ones with the signs on their backs that say in memory of my mom. that's just really, tears at your heart strings. so, it's just a matter of all the people that are there. if you've never been there before, it's amazing. you just can't, when you tell somebody 30,000 people, they can't visualize that until they're really there. it's so moving. >> isn't it true that in memory of my mom, because of things like this race, it's now being replaced and my mom is a breast cancer survivor? >> the rate of survival has increased so much, it's because of the money that is given to research and for programs for early detection. so that's, you know, that's all part of the money that we raise is to help with those programs. >> and we were saying, you can go the day of, however, it will cost $10 more, so register now. >> give us your website. >> www.komenmd.org. click on race for the cure. >> the money stays in maryland. >> it does. 25% goes to national research. >> we're looking forward to the big race. 11 days. >> that's it. >> thanks for coming in. >> thank you, so much, megan. while we're walking, let's walk some more. let's walk for loopupus. we'll show you how after this. >> card-giving? [laughter] >> it's a holiday to get back to work. coming up: first off, the job postings. we just see where the job is and "oh, i'll send them a resume." they don't read them. you have to read the job postings carefully. that's what i see happening with clients. i sent my resume out but didn't get any response. let me see the job postings you're sending them out to. you don't have this requirement and this skill set, so how do you expect them to respond. >> to those giving back, let's say 20 years. it's all changing, used to be one sheet, and that was it. >> in the past five or six years, the whole industry has changed tremendously. if you haven't put together a resume in that amount of time, go to your local library or bookstore, get out a resume book and look the the changes or approach a professional like me. >> how often should you tweak your resume? >> for every job you're responding to. that's very important. >> what do you mean, scan for keywords? >> once again, keywords, this is one of the ways that employers determine who they're going to bring in for an interview. they have special scanning software. they'll put in a certain number of keywords. if your resume doesn't have a certain percentage of those keywords in it, they won't look at it. >> that goes back to the point i was making about advertisements. keywords can be anywhere in the advertisement. i'd say most of all they occur in the responsibility section. if you're an administrative assistant and one of the job responsibilities says scheduling and planning, those are keywords. >> i also heard, don't put the date that you graduated from college, because that kind of gives away your age. >> it's okay if it's like in the last five years, but if it's previous to that, if you graduated in 1970, don't put it. it opens yourself to age discrimination. and as much as we don't want to believe it occurs, it does. >> don't put your picture on the resume. >> right. unless you're an actor or somebody like that. it opens the company up to legal discrimination charges. you weren't hired because of the way you look, i don't know. >> personal attributes. >> yeah, personal attributes are things that, things like you know, very communicative. you have great interpersonal skills like you and megan do or you're passionate about your work. and actually, you can find these in the job advertisements because um, for a job advertisement like an engineer, it might say they want somebody who's analytical, great problem solver. if you have that built into your profile on your resume, that's a good way to answer. >> i'm going to put you on the spot. tell me about something coming to your office, here's my resume, you changed it all around and they haven't been able to land a job, fixed it and they have a job now. >> i just had a client um, within the past month that that happened to. this person, i'm not going to say their name, but they were in marketing and they were entry-level marketing. when i asked them to send me the job they were looking at or jobs they were looking at, every job they were looking at said "minimum qualifications five years in marketing." well they didn't have that. so you know, you can't expect to be taken for a job if you keep applying for jobs that you don't have the minimum qualifications for. somebody else, i'll give you another example, somebody else recently was applying for a government job, the government job requested, i don't remember the exact um, letters on it, but it was something like icat. i actually googled it myself because i wanted to see what it was. i googled the letters. sure enough it came up and said you had to have been in the government, had to have a certain kind of background. this person didn't have it, they were doing all this work to get ready for a government job and nobody would look at it. >> they applied to the wrong government. all right, you're wonderful. national resume month, everybody. megan's picking up the tab. megan? >> that's right. resumes for everybody. >> all right, we keep talking about healthy eating, but sometimes it's hard to do and maybe you don't know which foods to eat. coming up, there's one particular food that's not hard to find and more than just good for us. the tomato could be the best fruit or vegetable. we'll find out which one, coming up. we're scooping up heat here. check it out. sunshine, really about the wind direction. when you see that there, it's from the south, it's a warm one. already up to 69. we'll be pushing upper 80s today and approaching 90 for the next two days. we have more on the forecast and more good morning maryland, so please, stick around. >> the guilty ones always have your number on speed dial. >> the da's way off on this. >> it's incredible of how you're always so sure of people's innocence. >> you're really wearing red sneakers to arraignment? i worry about you. >> they love me. yo! see everybody loves me. >> not including your ex-wife, i guess. >> ego alone. >> too good to date them my own age. >> a brand new show we'll be watching tonight at 10 :00. the whole truth. we'll talk to two of the stars right now. how are you guys? >> excellent. >> we're good. >> the whole truth and nothing but the truth. you're going to play the defense attorney and marra's going to play the prosecutor part. how's this going to apply? >> well you know, the cool thing about the show and this hasn't been done for some reason in the age of procedurals, um, is that you follow both the prosecution, marra, and defense, me, and prepare cases. you see it played out in court and it comes to some interesting danoma and it's interesting. usually not a dayas macinaw. >> i'm just making fun of rob saying danoma. >> is this going to be audience participation show? will we be guessing along with the plot? >> hopefully, yes. hopefully people will be involved and have their opinions on who's right? where the truth is. >> shifting their opinions. maybe you'll be reading from one side and thinking and switch allegiance to the other and back and forth until the danoma. >> the second mention. >> listen, what was your favorite courtroom drama growing up on tv?
