>> 6'2". >> how are your legs fitting? >> not at all. >> reporter: it's possible to use a laptop, not comfortable. >> 30% less room than before. >> with these seats, discount airlines could squeeze in a lot more passengers. >> after 20 minutes in this seat, i'm starting to lose feeling on my backside. >> will the airline compensate the passengers when their knees look like this? >> i, personally i couldn't do it. >> what about everybody that is overweight? >> try to lose some weight. >> reporter: these seats haven't yet received federal approval, the faa told us while they do test for safety, they have no requirements for seat size or leg room. >> i'm 6 foot tall. >> what do you think? >> it hurts. it's very painful. >> it's unclear if this is the future of discount flights, but for me, i'm ready to get off this plane. >> would you try it? >> if it's like $5 to go to california? imagine that? whoa. watch out for turbulence though, that's gotta hurt. >> i don't think that'd work if you're claustrophobic. >> this is our hot topic on today's facebook fan page. we posted the following question here. would you be willing to take a slightly more uncomfortable seat if you didn't have to pay near as much to fly. >> sheila wrote: it's depend on the length of the flight and what's the discount. to save 50%, maybe. >> if you'd like to share your two cents on today's hot topic, head to our facebook fan page. we'll share more comments throughout the rest of good morning maryland at 9:00. now to a topic that affects everyone: shopping, some find it relaxing, pleasurable, others say it's a hassle and pretty stressful. wait until you hear about one new shopping trend. it's called shopping on a deadline, all you need is an online connection, appetite for shopping. take a look. >> it's 12:00, in offices across america, these shoppers are going nuts. >> the online store just opened and the clock is ticking. in just seconds, yes, seconds, designer dresses, shoes and hand bags get snapped up, by buyers looking for a steal at bargain basement prices. it's the web version of the ultimate sample sale. >> you get caught up in the fever of the moment, people love it. it's like gambling on the horse races. am i going to get it? i want it. power of competition. >> it's called deadline shopping, the idea is simple, customers with high end designer labels with a limited supply. membership is free, but in order to get in, you have to be invited by a member. >> people want a deal, but they also don't want the exact same deal everybody else is getting. the brilliance of these sites is that you and a few people have stumbled on the fabulous finds. >> reporter: this is where the magic starts at new york's brooklyn navy yard of all places. in this hot, dusty, 200,000 square foot facility. what some fashion addicts call the holy grail. >> how do you get people to buy clothing they can't touch, they can't feel and they can't try on? >> well, i think it's a couple things, one is that it's appointment shopping. we have turned shopping into an event. >> that's for sure. >> shopping on guild has turned me into a better multitasker than before. >> uses two of my major interests. saving money and shopping. >> today guild has nearly 3 million members on track to do up to a half billion dollars in sales this year. guild was founded by two fashionistas, classmates at harvard business school. >> you don't know how many are left, you only have a limited amount of time. >> the prices are unbelievable. they're there for a day, but not the following day. you know that, unlike a store, if there's nothing left, you're like "not a great experience." with this you know if you get there too late, there'll be nothing left. >> reporter: each and every item sold is photographed at the guilt warehouse with a team of stylists working around-the-clock, that's key, but there is one issue. buyer's remorse. >> i think it's cute, it's fun, different than anything i have. >> definitely needed it. >> yes, just like a need to drink in our diet cokes a day, like that. that's how much i needed it. >> the business model works the company such as guilt group because the designers have excess merchandise more than any department store can actually sell. i've done it before, i think it's awesome. >> do you get caught up? do you buy stuff you don't need? >> i personally don't, i can see for example, how that woman was. i was telling you, a friend of mine bought something from guilt group that didn't fit, she sold it on ebay and made money off it. prices are so much lower than what somebody would pay in the store. they send out e-mails alerting you which designers have deals that day. >> like scalping. i'm going online today and doing it. >> they have mens stuff. >> membership only. >> i'll invite you. to be honest, you don't really need that. i didn't know anyone and they invited me. >> i was lost until i heard about megan's friend. i think i like the idea. guilt-tripping. >> buy it cheap and send it on ebay, brilliant. >> might be illegal, i don't know. >> you buy it, you can sell it, that's the way ebay works, right? we can't really flip the storms around, very active pattern across the atlantic, two, two, category four storms right now. julia just joining the party, upgrade this morning 135 mile-per-hour winds. the good thing here is that julia stays out in the open waters of the atlantic. no immediate threat to land. a lot of churned up surf across the flack. hurricane egor, winds were 155 last night, down to 145 this morning. it's still holding a very formidable girth across the central section of the atlantic. this is expected to be an active season. water temperatures are running about a degree above normal here in the tropical atlantic. the purpose of these hurricanes is actually to redistribute heat around the planet. they're doing their job of taking the excess heat, spreading it out into the atmosphere and it's definitely running its course with the category four storm. this one, egor is going to be a threat to bermuda, almost a direct hit this weekend, but by that point in time, it should be down to a category three or category two, still going to be a very potent system for them, still going to propagate big waves across the east coast. that's it, we get waves, not any weather out of that system. we have to shift our focus on storm number three with a name in this one, karl with a k. may pail in comparison to the two category four hurricanes. this one is having an immediate impact on the western portion of the caribbean and karl does appear to be making landfall later today or tonight in mexico's yucatan peninsula. 65 miles per hour success stand winds and running very close to the border between belize and mexico. runs through the yucatan today. southern gulf of mexico tomorrow. back to a hurricane status, making second landfall over the weekend. no threat to texas, three active tropical systems across the atlantic basin. this is what we expect, this is what is normal for us. high of 79 degrees, running pretty close. we hit 89 yesterday. 65 on the thermometer right now, we will catch up with the sunshine. we're expecting dry weather at least until thursday night or friday, today's two-degree guarantee, pretty much on target with where we belong at 78. a gorgeous day to get outside and enjoy maybe an extra run or taking the dog for an extra walk. tonight we'll slip it back down into the 60s after we're going through 76 degrees in westminster. right now i'm going to go online and buy stuff and flip it on ebay. >> you'll get a good deal. let's move on to yesterday's primary voting in maryland. two of the hottest races ended up being nail-biters. baltimore city, the race for state's attorney, too close to call. gregg bernstein has a narrow lead over patricia jessamy with 49% of the vote. 1400 votes separate the two right now, however, there are still thousands of absentee ballots that haven't been counted yet. last night, both candidates, they met with their supporters, they said they feel confident and ran a good race. reports are that the absentee ballots will start being counted on thursday. we will, of course, keep you posted. the race for democratic nomination for baltimore county executives, that was one of the closest primary races in decades in office. so, for this morning, this is what we know. kevin caminates has 52% of the vote. bartonfelder 44%. both camps gave up bead -- up beat reports last night. the winner of this race will take on republican ken holt. we'll keep you posted throughout this show with races if anything comes in. if mr. right or mrs. right turned out to be mr. or mrs. wrong, what should you do? >> we have advice on where to go for help. also ahead this morning: we'll tell you all about ron ayers and vickie wayman, they're coming to the african-american cultural festival. charles young will tell you what to expect this weekend. >> if your resume was chiseled on a rock, maybe it's time to update it to paper. cross the ts and dot the is. my commute home to the eastern shore every night only takes an hour but that's more time than congress spends reading massive spending bills, it's crazy. that's why i wrote a law that requires 72 hours to read every bill. i read the big bills and i said no. no to the $3 trillion budget, no to the bank bailout, and no to the health care bill. at home you would never pay a bill without reading it neither should congress. i'm frank kratovil and i approve this message because i'm proud to be ranked one of the most independent members of congress. here's what you should be watching: your cable bill. because you could be paying way too much. stop spending more for second best. upgrade to verizon fios and get tv, internet and phone for just $99.99 a month for a year. and here's a special bonus: you'll also get the fios tv movie package and epix -- free for 12 months. and with this offer, there's no term contract required. if you don't love fios, cancel at anytime with no early termination fee. fios gives you the best channel lineup, superior picture quality and more hd... plus internet rated #1 in satisfaction, speed and reliability. last chance. offer ends october 2nd. get fios tv, internet and phone for just $99.99 a month, plus the fios tv movie package and epix, free for 12 months... with no term contract. call 1.877.797.fios. that's 1.877.797.3467. call the verizon center for customers with disabilities at 800-974-6006 tty/v it's time for fios. let's get back to your two cents on today's hot topic. we showed you this new seat they're thinking about putting on airplanes now. it's a saddle, looks like, almost like a bike, doesn't it? all right, here's what we're hearing from you. kathy wrote in: what a stupid idea. are we going backwards? if you'd like to share your two cents on today's hot topic, head to the wmar facebook fan page, drop us a comment. we'll share comments throughout the rest of our morning show. divorce is painful and on top of that, it can be lengthy, confusing and expensive. fortunately there is help in our community available, that's where scott comes in, here's a lawyer at the bar association of baltimore city. thank you so much for coming in. >> thank you for having us. >> let's first start with the assistance that is available in the community. a lot of people in this situation have no idea where to turn. >> if you don't know where to go, call the lawyer referral service in baltimore city. 410-539-3112. it's a service where we have volunteer attorneys who answer the phones from 9:00 to 4:00, they'll listen to what your problems are, not just divorce, but any kind of legal problems and we'll refer you to an attorney on our panel who concentrate on that area of the law. you get a free consultation, but if you're watching this program and you're a channel 2 viewer, it'll be free if you let us know it's channel 2, how you got our name. >> oh great, okay, good. when you're in this situation, any money you can save is a good thing. let's talk about, i've seen stories in the past where people can get a divorce online, maybe not the best idea, but when too you need a lawyer? >> in maryland um, you're not going to get a divorce online, you have to show up in court at least once to get a divorce. there's three parts to the case, there's either divorce itself, children, custody, visitation or support. alimony, marital property, tensions. if you've been married a short period of time and you have no children, you really don't need an attorney. there's nothing to fight over in terms of children or property. most of the clerks offices have forms available, in your local jurisdiction, if you rent there, they can help you fill out the forms. understand in maryland it's either fault or no fault. most people in that situation, married for a short period of time, will proceed on no fault grounds, it's a one year voluntary separation. if they can't agree it's voluntary, once you've lived two years separate without co-habitation, it's a short divorce. people call me all the time "i've been married for a week, can i get an annulment?" no, you have to get a divorce. annulments are only if the marriages are legal. if you've been married for a substantial period of time, you have children and property, you need an attorney. you'd be making a terrible mistake trying to do it on your own. you'll miss filing deadlines, you'll fail to respond to discovery, and when you do get your day in court, you're not going to be able to testify about anything except involving the children, actually and you're going to be at a loss. >> really quickly, give us one or two tips if you're hiring a lawyer, one thing you should look for and one thing to look out for. >> if you're going to hire an attorney, i always suggest you speak to at least two or three. it's worth it, you have to find someone familiar with that jurisdiction, you know, we have 23 counties in baltimore city, you're better off finding somebody familiar with your court, familiar with your judges. you don't get a jury trial in a divorce case. if the judge is going to decide, you're a master of that court. interview two or three attorneys first. >> okay, really quickly, give us the number, the hours of the operation for the referral service incase somebody's sitting at home thinking "i could use that." >> 410-539-3112. anybody can call from throughout the state. hours of operation from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. monday through friday. >> good advice. >> all right, thank you. and it's important for all of you to understand that everyone's issue is unique and not the same. hypotheticals given by scott just now are just examples, not advice. if you need further assistance, contact the lawyer, referral and information service. speak to a volunteer attorney. 539-3112. if it's determined your issue refers referral to an attorney, they're providing free-30-minute consultations to all channel 2 viewers. head to baltimore county this weekend, we're going to preview the african-american cultural festival coming up next. it's a celebration of the 14th annual african-american cultural festival coming to towson this weekend. it's great to have you. 14 years. >> 14 years. >> you don't look like you're 14. >> i'm a little older than that, but i've been involved with the african-american festival since the beginning. every year it gets better and better. we appreciate you highlighting it for us. >> he's the promoter of the great festival. i heard this is one of the best festivals going on. >> it is. it's really a 12-month process we go through and get all of this together and then all the happens on september 18th this year. we want all the people to come out, 10:00 to 6:00 p.m. a lot of food benders. >> stop it right there, how did you line those two people up? >> he's one of the great jazz and uh, artists from you know, back in the day and very, very great uh, music that he plays. and we also have vicky wines, she's coming on at 2:00. come out early stafrjs late, enjoy the day. >> also have an idol winner from baltimore county coming. >> participated in the first baltimore county idol and um, she can sing! >> that's great. >> we want people to come out and hear her also. she really performed well and made it through all the different stages. >> buffalo soldiers will be there. >> yes. and this year, we are also having something to do with the mortgage um, housing uh days, foreclosures, we're having uh, a program that people can have housing classes and different things about foreclosures and what have you. we want people to come participate in that also. >> my buddy, randy will be out there? >> randy will be out there. radio one is one of our sponsors. he did an uh, first baltimore county idol for us. >> how many people usually come out? >> usually between 60 and 70,000 people on that day and uh, promotion with um, television stations like yours. we get the people out. >> that's great. >> very proud of what's going on. >> very proud of what's going on, want the people to enjoy the day. great weather on saturday. want everyone to come out, enjoy the 14th annual baltimore county african-american cultural festival. >> african-american cultural festival going on right there in the patriot plaza. if you want more information, go to www.aaculturalfestival.com. great crowd, great weather, have a great time. megan? >> sounds like a good time. for those of you trying to find a job, you might know that your resume should be the first thing you tackle, but coming up, what areas of that resume should you focus on first when updating it? we have the five places to concentrate on to help at least open the door to finding a job. and kids are getting high on one of the most popular medicines in our homes. but will officials make cough medicine a prescription drug to solve the danger? listen, since we're on the topic of resumes, no one better to talk to than our friend debbie. we're talking about updating today. >> yes, we are. >> you guys laughed when jamie said "when's the last time you updated it?" and i said recently. >> you need to make sure that you're giving the employer what they need. and the best way to do it is to update it. >> this isn't the no brainer stuff like the address and telephone number. >> you'd be surprised how people forget to do that. you've moved, you have to change your address, you're, a lot of people do e-mail. they change their e-mails and forget to change it. then employers send things and it bounces back. i'm one of those people guilty of doing that. i did it about a year ago. >> those are good ones to keep in mind. there are five areas, let's go through those. these are career goals. >> right. have your career goals changed? a lot of times i've seen people that want to transition now from one career to another. they're burnt out. if your career goals have changed, you need to change and update your resume. in order for a resume be effective, i know i state this all the time, it's so important, you need to meet the employers needs. if the employers needs are different because your career goal is different, then change your resume. >> okay, good. and you also say work experience plus achievements. >> right, of course you need to add and keep all your current work experience current on your resume, but the other thing is achievements. resumes or achievement days. if you don't keep your achievements current. employers don't know what you'll contribute to their bottom line. that's what it's all about. >> i was wondering, how's that different from number three? professional development? >> let's say you went back to school and learned some new skills because either you're transitioning or trying to get a better position within what you're doing. you need to write that down. did you become certified in something? did you get a license in something? maybe you were a high school graduate and you started taking college courses. add that on. it's very important, it shows growth, it shows interest. >> update that personal information. >> don't be like me with that. >> that when when they call you and the number's disconnected. where'd you go? >> i was just thinking that today by one of my professional organizations i haven't heard from recently, i said "i bet i forget to send them my new e-mail address." >> good things to think about. sometimes the resume, you look past that. >> number five is crucial these days. keywords. >> oh wow, people ask me this all the time. there are so many applicants for so few jobs out there, employers can't handle all these applications, so a lot of times, they're putting them, scanning them and they put in specific keywords that they're interested in, for instance if you're in sales, the keyword might with consultative sales or solution selling or relationship building. if you don't have these kind of keywords in your resume, nobody's even going to look at it. so, what i suggest to my clients is if you want to tweak your own resume, which you should always do, even if it's built professionally from someone like me, then go to the job announcements and see which keywords keep cropping up and take the ones that are actually strengths of yours and put them in your resume. that doesn't mean just dump them, you need to make sure you have the achievements that back up these keywords. >> debbie, always good to see you. where can people reach you. >> oh, sorry. >> the right one. >> my website is www.amazingresumesmd.com. >> resume looking amazing, jamie, she's great, isn't she? >> thank you, deb. teens are now looking for common medicines to get into their systems. >> generation of young people choosing to abuse medicines. >> one of the most popular medicines to abuse is in our medicine cabinets. kids are robotripping on cough medicines. >> 9:37. we're taking a look outside right now. temperatures 65 degrees. sunshine over baltimore. i keep asking the question, what am i going in here?
