"baltimore" magazine comes on once a month. this is a great issue because not only does it have the best places to work but also the top singles, so it's always fun to see who's out there, who's single. they did something neat this year, single in smallta-more. it's like two degrees of separation and everybody knows everybody so that's nice for the magazine. >> so you had an alum? >> my husband was in this. that's how i scoped him out. i read "baltimore" magazine and said i've gotta have him. either that or he works a few desks away. >> oh, there he is. [ laughter ] did you hear about this guy who sleep talks and what he said? do you believe it? >> i actually do. i would be sad if it wasn't true because it's so funny. it's such a cool, little story. so if it's made up, i would be disappointed. >> so his wife tapes it and plays it back. >> elephants in thongs. >> enjoy it. you don't see it every day. we'll be heading to washington live and talking to the transportation secretary. he's been in the job, and it'll be a year tomorrow. they are making a huge push for texting and driving and talking on the phone and driving. we'll check in with ray lahood to see what the government's doing about it because it is a huge problem. i want to get to a personal note for both megan and myself. we want to say so long to bill tooey. he was an outstanding man and he's going to be missed in baltimore county. >> always available, always professional and sad to see him go, but he'll be a success no matter where he is. now a look at the weather. here's justin with the news of the day coming up. we still have a winter weather advisory. you woke up this morning saying where is it. you talked about ice and it's not here. it's here now. it's making a return and now that we've got school and everything else on the way, you have to deal with a sloppy mess until 1:00. northern baltimore, carroll and northern counties westbound. they did close school in allegheny back into the mountains. as far as we're concerned, an average setup this morning. now we build in just a cold rain mixing in with sleet around and north of the city then turning to snow. we have relatively mild road surfaces. now we're sitting at 33 in rowland park and show you 34 degrees with sleet now falling at owings mills at the harbor school. check out the radar. more pick and blue showing up there. even that green around baltimore. just a delay on the radar to catch up to what is happening on the backside of this complex storm pattern. temperatures staying in the mid-30s then maybe minor accumulation and glazing on the minor surfaces and car rooftops. otherwise, we get this out of here this afternoon and evening. and then the next big storm brings us heavy rain. we'll talk about that in a bit. it is 9:04 and back to you. you want to talk about a bank buster. the president responding to public rage over the financial crisis. he cracks down on banks, something we haven't seen since the 1930s. wall street didn't like it one bit yesterday. viviana hurtado has the tough day with our money. >> reporter: the president says the americans are worried about the economy, i get it. he will travel to lorraine, ohio, which he visited two years ago. many say they will believe the economy is recovering when the unemployment rate, now at 10%, dropped. >> you still hear in the news today little hopes and hints of a recovery, but personally, until we see people back to work, we don't quite see a recovery. >> reporter: much of main street is it furious with the wall street banks that nearly brought down the global economy with the business practices then continue to pay out big bonuses after receiving billions in federal bailout money money the president says he's angry, too, and yesterday unveiled new rules to stop the bank's risky behaviors. >> we cannot keep making shareholders make money if the bank wins but taxpayers foot the bill if the bank loses. >> reporter: the regulations would impose limits on how big a financial institution could grow and keep commercial banks from running high risk hedge and private equity funds. many, including treasury secretary tim geithner believes that in reigning in the banks, the president's plan could hurt the economy. >> we want them to be profitable. if we do things to make them less profitable it could rebound back on us badly money. >> reporter: another issue for the president, abc news has learned there might not be enough votes in the senate to reconfirm the federal reserve chief ben bernanke. viviana hurtado, abc news, washington. the president will make his first visit to our city since taking office next friday. he'll be in town to address a house republican retreat at the renaissance baltimore harborplace hotel. the president's trip to baltimore will be his first appearance in the city since he spoke when the inaugural train stopped by on his way to washington. unlike that speech which attracted 40,000 people, the president's upcoming visitor will take place before an invited audience only. megan? another after-shock has hit haiti sending earthquake survivors into the streets in the middle of the night. people in port-au-prince said the brief tremor thursday night was not as strong as several others more than a week ago. patients are facing up to 12- day waiting lists at clinics. the u.s. navy is working to add 350 more crew members to its hospital ship and will increase the number of beds and operating rooms on board. that brings us to the navy adding more patient care aboard the u scht ns, which is the baltimore-based comfort ship. the floating hospital is anchored off the coast of haiti. the navy says the additional 350 crew members over the next several days will enable to quadruple the number of beds to nearly 1,000 and also increase the number of operating rooms from 6 to 11. commanders on the floating hospital are also sending medical teams ashore to help with the casualties and evaluation as well as triage. dozens of stars right now rally together tonight to raise money for victims of the earthquake. you've been hearing about this. it will be a two-hour event called "hope for haiti." it will be hosted by george clooney in los angeles and wyclef jean in new york. the huge musical acts set to perform tonight include bruce springsteen, mary j. blige, stevie wonder to maim a few and alicia keys. you can catch it right here on abc 2 starting at 8:00. for the first time in a long time, all of the orioles are scheduled to appear at fan- fest tomorrow. remember last year they all had to be there because it was the day before the game but fan- fest will be right at the convention center. we have 60 current, future, and former oriole players and coaches at the convention center. this will be sponsored by the sarasota convention and visitor's bureau. you can get autographs, learn how to buy season tickets and find out how to turn a double play with one out. all this for ten bucks for adulls, and cheaper for kids. texting, applying makeup, eating, all of the things many of us do while behind the wheel of a car. >> distracted driving has cost thousands of lives, and now a warning from the government. plus it is saving the lives of cancer patients. we'll have more on the breakthrough technology being used right here in our hometown. all right. some people sleepwalk, but this man, he talks. stay tuned to hear what he says. it's pretty funny. >> we're on a rampage to persuade people that they can't text and drive, can't use a cell phone and drive. 6,000 people lost their lives last year as a result of someone texting and driving or some form of distracted driving. and we just need to get cell phones out of the hands of people while they are driving. we need to get blackberries and these distractions away from people while they're driving because they take their hands off the wheel, take their eyes off the road, and you cannot drive safely while you are texting. you cannot drive safely when you have a cell phone up to your ear. you simply can't. we know that that is true, and we have a good public service ad up on our web site. distraction.gov that people can watch, and we also have a very strong advocacy group that's called focus driven all over america persuading people that in order to drive safely, you have to put these devices away. >> secretary lahood, we, here in maryland last year, they made it illegal to text and drive. it was a huge campaign. while it is illegal to text and drive, you can't send one but you can read one. do you think that that's gonna be changing, that the laws will keep evolving and that this is a baby step? >> you know, i think having good laws with good enforcement is absolutely critical to solving this problem. and your ability to drive safely and read something like a text message is just inhibited by the fact that you're taking your eyes off the road. and so i believe congress will pass some laws, maybe a law with good enforcement that really prohibits people from texting, from reading a text message from, using a cell phone. we know that click it and ticket, we know that safety belt laws have been very effective. we know getting drunk drivers off the road with good .08 laws have taken drunk drivers off the road. we know that good laws will get these devices out of people's hands so they can't read a text message. they can't send a text message, and they can't use a cell phone. we will save lives and prevent injuries if laws like these are enacted. >> all right. quickly, give us the web address again. >> distraction.gov. lots of good information. the 30-second public service message, and a way for people to learn a lot more about this issue. >> secretary lahood, happy anniversary. tomorrow you've been on the job for a year, right? >> that's correct. thank you very much. it's been a great opportunity for public service and to really provide some of the safety opportunities for people. >> all right. take care. thanks for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> all right, jamie. here's the story of the day here. this guy evidently doesn't just sleepwalk, he sleep talks. his woman -- the wife is sleeping with him and she hears him spouting off weird words in the night so she whips out a recorder and starts taking notes here. nick watt listens in from london. list ton what this guy's saying in his sleep. >> reporter: adam leonard goes to bed every night with his wife karen and a voice- activated recorder. >> reporter: the audio is real. the video? our re-enactment. adam who married karen last summer apparently talks a lot in his sleep. >> reporter: as a lark, karen began posting adam's outbursts every morning on a blog. nearly a million hits later, the couple is on the talk show circuit. >> it was actually something i was putting up for myself and my friends. it didn't occur to us anything like this would happen. >> reporter: now they are selling t-shirts emblazoned with adam's utterances. is this for real? >> proceed with caution. >> reporter: apparently we only sleep talk during light sleep when our brains are chewing stuff over. there have been cases of sleep talk confessions leading to divorce. so far, everything adam leonard has said is just gibberish, pretty funny gibberish. >> i wake up in the morning and the first thing karen does is ooh, i've got to tell you what you said. >> reporter: how do we know that you're not making this up? >> i mean, i don't know how unless you spend the night with me. [ laughter ] >> reporter: thanks but i think i'll just read the blog. nick watt, abc news, london. >> all right. what do you think? letting it sink in now you. do you think it's legit? >> i hope so. i think it's very funny. yes, i do. what a weird thing to make up. >> yeah. baltimore's list of top singles is out. two of charm city's most eligible in our studio right now. we'll meet them when we come back. absolutely, but right now it's time for today's birthday. this is when we ask you to send in the pictures and tell us about your family's birthdays and you do. george scarborough from elkton turns 85 today. george, you share the same birthday as some celebrities, diane lane turns 45. and former "seventh heaven" star beverly ann mitchell turns 28. happy birthday, george. if you have anyone coming up in your family with a birthday, send us a short little e-mail attached with a photo of a friend, family member, co- worker whoever it is, tell us who had he are, where they are from, how hold they will be if you want and give us the info and we'll put it on the air. give us a few days to do it ahead of time. interestingly, we came in and it was dry and the radar in a moment showing how one storm off the coast. we get a resurgence the last couple of hours. the winter weather advisory's holding tight for northern baltimore, carroll counties. most of the area regardless of what falls out of the sky will land on and turn into wet roads. not expecting much of a problem out there except far north and west where there may be some minor stickage. wintry mix extended into the early afternoon. here's maryland's most powerful doppler radar. green's showing up and it does appear as if outside we have sleet and rain mixed in. occasionally the radar's showing the stuff not reaching the ground. you head back towards westminster. watch what's happening up here in tawnytown and just to the north of manchester and hanover, york, pa. we're beginning to mitch in on the ray -- mix in on the radar with the pink and blue shading. more of that mix and plain old snow. so we pulled this back and you notice while we were dry during the overnight and early morning hours, there was my ride in at 3:20. we were watching the storm back to the west, the original california storm actually fade away and send its energy to this explosive development off the coast. as that coastal system stole most of the energy, we dried out. we get one more enhancement here. watch the radar light up and fill in over the last couple of hours. central pa getting some snow. essentially we're looking at that warm push or cloud level. because of this strong storm off the coast, starting to pull down along this boundary itself. we're filling in that energy field and getting in more of that moisture. that's why we have the light precipitation and look how impressive that storm is. nice comma shape and almost looks like an eye trying to develop. there is a rapid development with the system pulling away from the coast. all it's doing is pulling in the energy from the original system. that's the reason we expect to have that light band of wintry mix and probably more sleet and snow as we lead from the late morning and afternoon. roads primarily stay wet but we'll have more flakes coming down. don't be surprised if you see it or hear the ping on the window. we'll take you back to the advisory zone from northern baltimore, too back from carroll county. again, maybe an extra burs burst with some of the grassy areas. even howard county, columbia into the mix at 35 degrees. annapolis should be mostly rain with your temperatures holding to near 40. for tonight, turning partly cloudy. then more of a, how should i say, we'll get to 43 under a partly cloudy sky. next storm comes out of california. i'll give you a quick peek here and i'll show you the maps in the next half hour. rain's trying to develop sunday afternoon and reach 46 degrees. heavy rain, we could get 2 to 3 inches leading to localized flooding with monday's high at 52. we'll cool back into the middle and latter part of next week. remember, you can catch us online at abc2news.com. check out the latest of maryland's most powerful doppler radar right there on your computer screen. a new weapon used to treat cancer. you may have seen it last night on "grey's anatomy." >> it's being shown right here in baltimore. we'll tell you how it works when we come back. [ male announcer ] mark your calendar. the "verizon fios days to save event" is here. a limited time opportunity to save $20 a month, when you sign up for fios tv, internet and phone for the great low price of $89.99 a month for one year with a two-year agreement. with 100% true fiber optics, you'll get an amazing hd picture, blazing fast internet, plus, crystal-clear phone. all for just $89.99 a month for one year. discover a whole new entertainment experience that goes beyond cable. it brings facebook and twitter right to your tv. cool widgets let you check sports, weather and traffic without interrupting your show. it's no wonder fios tv has three times more very satisfied customers as comcast. get three amazing services for only $89.99 a month for one year with a two-year agreement. don't wait. jump on this limited time offer and save big now. call 1.877.4fiostv. call the verizon center for customers with disabilities at 800-974-6006 tty/v. this is beyond cable. this is fios. i've removed the tumor and placed the catheters. now i'm going to flood the abdomen with heated chemo. >> you saw this last night on "grey's amatny" with a new treatment known as heated chemo. guess what? it's not tv fiction. that very treatment is being used right here in baltimore with patients with advanced abdominal cancer. the results are promising. >> she works out. >> reporter: matt fought the toughest battle of his life as a 9 scp 11 firefighter. he had no idea he would be fighting for his own life several years later. >> i went to the hospital and i tell you what, it was the most excruciating pain i ever had. >> reporter: pain that would reveal something much more serious. doctors found a tumor in his appendix. chances of survival were slim. with an experimental treatment involving heated chemotherapy gave him a second chance. >> they cut you from stem to stern. i like to call it they filet and sautee you and that's what they do. they cut you open, take out the tumors, and then when it's done and the big thing is the heated chemo that they give you. while you are still open, they circulate for 90 minutes chemotherapy solution throughout your whole abdominal cavity. >> reporter: it kills cancer cells more effectively and more importantly, it can save lives. >> we are talking about people who go back to a normal quality of life, normal life and live for a long time. many have been cured after they have been told to go home and die. >> reporter: that's what happened to iris with appendix cancer that filled her belly with fluid. she was only given a few months to live. >> i just felt as though i had to fight, and that's what i did. >> reporter: she underwent the aggressive treatment and is now healthy, enjoying retirement with her husband. >> i consider myself a miracle as well, so it means so much to still be living, still being able to go about your everyday normal life, and i've been able to do that. i thank god for that. >> the majority of patients that need this operation don't even know that it exists, and it's not even being offered by doctors. when it's offered, the insurance denies it. >> reporter: that's why dr. sardian and patient lz want to spread the word about this promising treatment. >> anyone that's been diagnosed, if they can just get this treatment, come in and see a doctor like dr. sardy, there's hope. >> saved my life. >> reporter: linda so, abc 2 news. >> well, that's great to have dr. sardy here with us. thank you so much for taking the busy time out of your day to join us. "grey's anatomy" last night, and now the whole world knows about it. how did abc come to find out about this? >> i don't know because this is a very rare condition, although it happens more frequently than we think it is. >> do you anticipate the phone will be ringing off the hook today because of the national exposure you are got? >> i mean really, we see patients contact us every day because there are very few centers in the united states who perform this operation. >> what do you tell the patient or who qualifies for that? >> these are patients who have advanced what we call advanced cancer that could be coming from the appendix, the ovary, the lining of the inside of the abdominal cavity, the colon, or the stomach. >> is this the last option? >> pretty much. unfortunately, most of these patients have been treated with many previous surgeries and previous chemotherapy and get to us very, very late in the course of the disease. >> what do you find? what's the success rate? >> we have done well, depending on the primary tumor. we have people now alive 14 years later pretty much after they have been told to go home and die. >> when you started the procedure, what do you think at the very beginning? >> when you start the procedure, there is so much tomber that really you have to believe in this to make it happen because it takes an operation 10 to 14 hours and sometimes even longer to complete. the sad part of this is always the patients are being denied the therapy by insurance companies. medicare doesn't want to approve it even though i have 25 patients with medicare that are alive now, five, six, seven years later. >> so this isn't covered? >> it's not covered. many insurance companies actually fight for this, yes, and last week we had a patient scheduled from michigan. that patient has been denied so now we are appealing so she can be treated because otherwise she will die. >> can i ask a dumb question. can a drama on abc turn things around? >> i hope so. >> can this make the insurance companies start stepping up? >> i think so. we're not talking about one patient. >> right. >> we're talking about literally hundreds around the world who have benefited from this approach. this therapy. i think we need to find ways to get the word out so we can train more physicians to do it, more institutions willing to do it and get insurance companies to accept it. it really works. >> doctor, how do you explain it to the patient about the procedure? how do you break it down? >> it's interesting because most of the patients have it through the internet. most talk to other patients or web sites that tep sites that help us about it. i say listen, will be a big operation. we'll start first thing in the morning and when we finish, we don't know. i will run a truck over you. some patients say you will run a truck over me? you back it back a couple of times. it is a big operation because there are multiple operations in one. what you are trying to do is remove all of the tomber that you can see. -- all of the tumor that you can see. and when you are done, you want to see very little tumor or no tumor less than a pea sized tumor. that allows the chemotherapy that will follow immediately in surgery to work. we do heated chemotherapy because heat kills cancer cells. >> right. >> it also enhances, makes it work better. >> when did this procedure start, how many years ago? >> dr. sugar baker in washington started over 30 years ago. and i started about 14 years ago, that patient was still alive today after she had three previous surgeries. the patients that were discussed last night, you know, they are living with the imappreciation of what really happens. there is a lot of data. the sad part is that there is over 300 publications in the literature. the top journals in the world showing the benefit of this approach. but there is a negative belief by medical oncology, institutions and many others to see that it works. there are hundreds of patient as live having a normal life because of this operation. >> i hope you go back to your office and hope there's a stack of messages for to you return on people trying to save their lives. >> anything we can do to help, we'll be glad to do so. >> thanks for coming in, doctor. megan? >> thanks, jamie. good stuff. the list is out. "baltimore" magazine has released their top singles in our city. two of those people are in the studio. we'll introduce you to them when we come back. we're wawping the return of sleet and snow. maryland's most powerful doppler radar tracking mainly wet streets expected but still a winter weather advisory. we'll talk more about that and the next storm on the way by the end. weekend. stick around. there's more "good morning, maryland" after this. to our community it's our lifeline to the emergency information we need it's a free service that provides free entertainment. but one day soon, it could be taken away. there's a movement among special interest groups to limit free antenna tv and millions of americans who depend on it would lose out. let's tell congress to keep free antenna tv as part of our communications future. always free and always local. all right. where are the best places to work in baltimore? according to "fortune" magazine, life bridge help. our buddy rudy miller making everybody know about life bridge. it is the only state health care system to make the list here in maryland. warren, what do you have to say about that? >> it's a combination of benefits and culture. two of them working together. we try really hard to be the best employer we know how to be and reach out to our employees in a number of different ways. >> congratulations. another local company to make the "fortune" list are mccormick and the marriott. congratulations. megan? we've been waiting for this interview all morning long. the february edition of "baltimore" magazines hitting the stands and right now we'll talk about the top singles. we'll meet two of them so take a look. sharon a mother of three, co- founder f cool kids the campaign likes a guy with a sense of humor. her biggest turnoff, gum cracking and arrogance. then we have trey lewis, 26 years old, the police officer. loves 1970s r & b music and a die hard baseball fan. then jess bloom here to tell us about the article. thanks for coming in. >> thank you. >> you are good sports for doing this and coming in. sharon, how did you get approached? >> my friend tina called me back in october and said i'd like to nominate you, what do you think? i said that's fine, and she sent it in. i never expected to hear anything then jess contacted me so it's been fun. >> are you hoping to meet someone or do you want to see what's going to happen? >> i was. i didn't know the editing process or anything like that with it but everything we said, they kept. the photo shoot went well, and i had a lot of fun. >> your dream dates with alicia keys? >> right. she did call but left me a voice mail. >> you have to keep it open. the article just came out. what's your dream date? >> i put dr. ben carson. i know he's married, but he is an amazing man and what he does for other people. i thought that would be great. >> that's great. so you are looking for a smart guy with a big heart. >> and don't crack gum. >> how do you go about finding people? is this a fun process or is it stressful? >> it's very fun. this year we got 500 no, ma'am nations which was double last year. usually singles are nominated by friends or family and some older singles nominate themselves. i send them out a questionnaire, turn offs, turn- ons and movies. then i get great, eligible candidates with fun answers and i pick them. >> michael orr's in here. >> he was a great sport. he had a lot of fun. he said his teammates think he looks like anthony anderson from" law and order." >> i would have said the guy that played him in "the blindside." >> you have the dating and single in baltimore. it's a hard place to be single because everybody knows everybody. do you think it's hard to be single here?
