achievement marks a victory for america for those who seek peace around the world and for all those who lost loved ones on september 11th 2001. amid concerns of retaliation from al-qaeda, the u.s. state department says it will step up security at u.s. diplomatic facilities all over the world. one terrorism experts says the u.s. will be watching to see who succeeds bin laden. >> i think the successor will be nothing fortunately on the scale of what we have seen of osama bin laden. >> reporter: details are still emerging about the special u.s. mission that was successful in pakistan but senior officials say bin laden was shot in the head and his body buried at sea. reporting live, samantha hayes back to you. news of the forces successful operation on the compound in the pakistani city has many across the u.s. and around the world breathing a collective sigh of relief bringing an ento the 10-year manhunt for osama bin laden. this morning, abc2's linda so is live where some people are boarding a train for the morning commute to the nation's capital and linda, you have a copy of the baltimore sun in your hand this morning. >> reporter: yes, today is the day you will want to grab the paper. this is what the headline reads. one word, dead. osama bin laden if you've not heard was captured and he is dead. he was killed during a fire fight in pakistan. the announcement came last night late last night by president obama. and as you mentioned, a lot of people who are already up this morning this early, were asleep so they missed that announcement and we are talking to a lot of folks who this morning are hearing for the first time that osama bin laden is dead. and a lot of surprise, a lot of disbelief and relief surrounding the news. you know, many of the folks are heading off to dc. some of them worked in dc when the 9/11 attacks happened. that was a day they will never forget. where they -- forget where they were or what they were do. today could be another historic moment you will never forget where you were when you first heard about this. a lot of folks were getting ready for work when they tuned into tv and got on the internet and read the headlines. we spoke with one gentleman who was actually he remembers the day when 9/11 happened and he was actually supposed to head up there for a business trip. obviously that got canceled. but let's listen to what he had to say. >> a little bit surprised it seemed to happen so quickly, but, it is good news. i am glad to see it happen before the 10-year anniversary and there's a big celebrations or anything. so he, i guess it's a shame it took so long, but i am glad to today see -- we will see what what pes to see if they fall apart or you know it will be interesting to watch the world events the next few days weeks and months. >> reporter: many wondered if the day would come. i think there's collective sins sense of relief and surprise. we will stand by all morning talking to folks as
