flight fright. a delta airlines jet makes an emergency landing after birds fly into an engine right after takeoff. >> this is the latest scare involving a major safety problem in the skies. it's forced captain sully sullenberger to land a jet in the hudson river. while this emergency landing was not quite as dramatic, passengers had the scare of their lives. we were talking about this earlier. how can a bird take down a plane. >> that's what stuns me. i was no engineering major but a bird can take out half a plane. we'll get into that in just a second. luckily everyone made it off okay. just a few scary moments there. also an update on a major story we've been following all this week. the woman accused of killing the mother of a newborn, and then kidnapping that baby. she finally went before a judge. how can she plead not guilty, though, after basically confessing to the crime? >> later this half hour, warm thoughts for the winningest coach in collegiate sports. pat summitt as she steps away from the job that she loves so much. had a press conference yesterday on the campus of tennessee, and great to hear from her. she sounds like she's in good spirits. >> people were predicting an emotional press conference. that's not, from what i saw, what it turned out to be. she was at peace, cracked a few jokes which is the way you want to walk away. it's okay. i'm moving on to other things. >> and it was important for feem see her in that state. at peace and comfortable. >> and record intact. that's for sure. >> yes, for a long time. first, before all of that, those delta passengers have finally arrived in california after a quite eventful day you can see here on the east coast. >> the plane which was packed with terrified passengers was forced to make an emergency landing after birds disabled one engine. here's abc's t.j. winick. >> reporter: the noise was heard shortly after delta flight 1063 took off from jfk airport thursday afternoon. >> delta 1063 has had an engine failure on the right engine. declaring an emergency due to a bird strike. >> the grinding sound was birds which had flown into one of the engines. this video was taken by a passenger. >> it was the scariest thing i have ever done in my life. >> reporter: according to those on board, the cabin then filled with smoke. >> i was literally calling my wife to say, hey, we could be freaking -- this might be my last flight. i was that scared. >> the plane turned around and after a flyby so the bottom of the plane could be inspected it landed without incident. >> crew handled it beautifully. very smooth. everybody on the flight knew this was not normal. calm. >> reporter: bird and other wildlife strikes are believed to cost over $600 million in damage a year to u.s. civilian and military planes. >> it's very, very difficult to avoid the birds. sometimes you'll see them at the last minute. you are moving very fast, 150, 160 miles an hour. and if you were to abort the takeoff, you might cause more problems than if you just continue the takeoff. >> reporter: even so, 757s like thursday's plane, are designed to fly or take off on just one engine. >> all is well so they can take their time and everybody can be calm out there. t.j. winick, abc news, new york. >> wow. and bird strikes a lot more common than you may think. >> yeah. 2,586 since 1990. at jfk alone. 219 people have been killed since '88. $600 million annual. they test jet engines to withstand bird strikes. but they test them with four-pound birds. when you are talking about canadian geese and the geese we're dealing with, they are a little larger than 4 pounds. maybe they should start testing for larger birds. >> it's the size of the bird that gets in there. that's why the plane -- >> like big bird. >> that's what it takes. you take a little bird. how is that taking out a whole plane. we're talking about sizable birds here. it's scary. those passengers clearly had a little spike in their blood pressure. >> yes, they did. >> it worked out okay, thank god. another mysterious flight drama. this one over the gulf of mexico. controllers actually lost contact with the small plane and then called in air force jets there to the scene. they saw that the plane's windshield was frost period they then shadowed the plane as it circled for hours and eventually sat down in the water and sank. the pilot was a doctor from louisiana. he was the only one on board that plane. the texas woman accused of killing a young mother and then kidnapping her baby has made her first appearance before a judge. defense attorneys hinted that they are considering an insanity defense. abc's yunji de nies reports from suburban houston. >> reporter: verna mcclain trembled as she walked into the courtroom. she told the judge she cannot afford a lawyer. >> you own a house? >> no, sir. >> you own a car? >> no, sir. >> reporter: the judge appointed two state attorneys and set a bond hearing for monday. her defense team says she should be released to tend to her three children. >> she has no prior criminal history. this -- her involvement, which is the degree of it is yet to be determined, would be an isolated incident. >> reporter: mcclain has been charged with capital murder for shooting 28-year-old kala schuchardt and kidnapping her 3-day-old baby boy. police a mcclain told them she recently miscarried and planned to pass the baby off as her own. her attorneys will plead not guilty. >> there are many times when people confess to things that they in fact, did not do under government coercion. >> reporter: schuchardt's mother has no words for her daughter's killer. >> it's a brutal murder, and it's horrible is what it is. and that's -- my daughter was a good person. she wouldn't fight and argue with anybody, but she fought to protect her baby, and she took her life for it. >> reporter: mcclain's attorneys tell abc news, she is very emotional and has been placed on suicide watch in a single cell. for now, her three children, ages 6, 10 and 16 have been placed with relatives. yunji de nies, conroe, texas. >> no relatives have even visiteder in jail yet. i think everyone kind of understands this is a deeply troubled and potentially mentally ill woman. >> understandably so. she is under 24-hour surveillance in that cell to make sure nothing happens. and she will return to court monday for bond hearings. >> sad on so many levels. after spending a week in jail, george zimmerman could actually walk free. later today a bond hearing will be held near orlando where, of course, zimmerman is now facing second-degree murder charges for the highly controversial shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. experts say there is a good chance he will be granted bail. meanwhile, martin's parents attended a town hall meeting that was held in tampa. they say they will not grant a request for a face to face meet with zimmerman any time soon. we got our first look at one of the call girls at the heart of the secret service sex scandal as we get word that even more agents are expected to resign within days. here's abc's reena ninan in cartagena. >> reporter: this is reportedly the woman at the center of the scandal. the "new york daily news" is publishing images of what they say is the colombian escort. a 24-year-old single mother who argued with an american secret service agent over her bill at the hotel caribe where the agents were staying. baby, my cash money, she told the agents according to "the new york times." prostitution is legal in colombia. so when she didn't get her money, she called the police. finally, collecting roughly $200 for the night. just a quarter of what she says she was owed. the men were in colombia ahead of president obama's arrival. before heading out for a night of fun, abc news has learned secret service officials booked a party room at this hotel, big enough for 30 people. the secret service tells us they have no record a party room was rented. as many as 21 local women were allegedly involved in the misconduct at the hotel. in washington, the outrage is growing. >> it's so -- what would be the word -- disgusting, disconcerting. every "d" word you can think of. >> reporter: three of the agents have retired, resigned or been removed. the other eight agents face lie detector tests and more resignations are expected. in cartagena, colombia, reena ninan, abc news. >> as you can imagine, intense media interest in this case. some of those fbi agents or secret service agents have now been identified by other news organizations, putting their name out there. we, obviously in that piece did not show the prostitute/escort in question, but the "new york daily news" did print several photos of her. they are online in case you are curious and want to go see them. >> you were curious. >> i went to go see them. you see the blurred picture. what does she really look like. 24-year-old single mom. so, anyway, it's -- more and more is trickling out here including names and now you saw photos as well. >> assistant special agent in charge of the k-9 division and two of those had been pat summitt. and yesterday on a court named in her honor she, reflected on her amazing career and talked about her next challenge ahead. tennessee's pat summitt is a coaching legend. famous for a competitive drive that pushed her to the top of the record books. >> get her! get her! >> reporter: but now after 38 seasons, summitt is stepping down. less than a year after being diagnosed with early onset dementia. >> i have loved my work at the university of tennessee. it's been awesome. >> reporter: summitt is the winningest coach, male or female in ncaa college basketball history. >> we have managed to win some ball games and hang championship banners. >> reporter: that's a huge understatement. during her time at tennessee, summitt won 1,098 games. she coached in 18 final fours and her lady vols won eight national titles. >> we have grown the game of women's basketball. >> reporter: but the final season of that journey was an emotional one. summitt announced last august her devastating diagnosis. >> i'd wake up in the morning and, you know, i would think, where am i? >> reporter: summitt started losing her keys and forgetting her schedule. a specialist at the mayo clinic confirmed her worst fears. >> i night sound this way, but, why me? dementia? >> reporter: summitt will serve as coach ememeritus of the program. >> reporter: she'll be a spokesperson in's fight against alzheimer's. yesterday the white house announced that president obama will award pat summitt with the nation's highest civilian honor. the presidential med alf freedom for her success on and have uncovered a major new clue in the disappearance of a little boy 33 years ago. >> etan patz was just 6 years old when he vanished. now investigators want to know if his body was buried in a new york basement. it's friday, april 20th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> tgif. good morning, everybody. i'm paula faris. >> good morning, everybody. i'm rob nelson. this little boy's disappearance back in 1979 sent shock waves across the country when he vanished after walking to the bus stop alone for the first time. moms and dads became a lot more protective of their little boys and girls and he became famous. this was the first face on what's the ubiquitous missing child's picture on milk cartons. this was the first face on those milk cartons. >> hopefully 33 years later that family can have some closure. >> they've waited long enough for it. another major headline is the mysterious ghost plane that crashed in the gulf of mexico after it lost radio contact. the private plane flew in circles for hours and hours and a respected doctor is now feared dead. >> strange story there. also later this half hour -- talk of a brand new role for the biebs. is the biebs engaged? that is the million-dollar question. was he really shopping for wedding rings? we'll have that and more in "the skinny." man, i hope the answer is no. i think he's way too young. >> 18? >> 18 is way too young. >> and he just released "boyfriend." now he's going to re-release it and call it "fiancee." >> at least wait until you get all your adult teeth before you get engaged. etan patz became the face of the missing child's movement when he vanished 33 years ago. >> he was the first missing child to be featured on the side of a milk carton. now a new search here in new york city for possible new clues in the case. here's abc's jim dolan. >> reporter: 6-year-old etan patz was abducted back in 1979. it quickly drew nationwide attention. despite a flood of media reporting, his body was never found and no one was ever charged in the case. >> this is a re-examination of evidence as well as leads that we get. >> reporter: recently, though, in an effort to revive the long, cold case, police interviewed 75-year-old miller here in an old mug shot. back in 1979, miller did carpentry work in the building police are now investigating. he befriended etan, even gave the boy a dollar the day before he was abducted. police have known that all along, but when they spoke to miller this time, he gave them information that confirmed the need to take a fresh look at the building. by that time, though, cadaver dogs had indicated that a body was there or had at some point been there. new technology available to law enforcement will help in the search. neighbors say miller is quiet and lives with his grown daughter now. he was picked up by the fbi. now the central character in a case that changed so much about america. >> it was very disturbing to know a child had vanished on our block. >> reporter: we want to stress that no one has been arrested or charged in connection with this case. sources continue to refer to mr. miller as a person of interest and not a suspect in the disappearance of etan patz. etan patz's parents put out a sign outside of their soho apartment last night asking reporters to please leave them alone. for abc news, i'm jim dolan. >> that man in question had given etan patz $1 just a couple of days before for helping him out with something. but it's amazing these cadaver dogs, these forensic dogs, even if his body was there for 24 hours, they'll be able to detect it even decades later. but they said there was fresh concrete that was laid down in that building the week he disappeared. so they're going to have to dig all of that up. >> imagine what his parents are going through when they get that phone call that there's been a crack in the case. they said they never moved out of that soho apartment, never even changed their phone number all in hopes the little boy would still call or show back up 33 years later. let's hope they finally get some -- there's never closure in the death of a child or this kind of case, but some peace or sense of what happened. >> i can only imagine as a parent. never going to let my kids walk by themselves to school. can't do it. now to the los angeles-bound flight forced to make an emergency landing after a bird strike. one passenger said it sound like a volkswagen was being ground through the engine. the plane returned to jfk airport here in new york as a precaution. experts say that birds and other wildlife have cost hundreds of millions of dollars in damaged aircraft. the coast guard is investigating a mysterious flight that ended in the gulf of mexico. the small plane set off from louisiana bound for sarasota, florida. but it drifted in circles for hours before crashing into the water. alison morrow of wfts in sarasota has more. >> golden eagle 4-8 delta lima. >> golden eagle 4-8 delta lima. i'll be right back with you. >> reporter: at 6:45 thursday morning an exchange between dr. peter hertzak and air traffic control marks the beginning of this cessna 421's last flight. >> delta lima cleared to sarasota. >> delta lima cleared to sarasota. >> reporter: within an hour, controllers lost contact with dr. hertzak. by 8:45, two f-15s caught up with the plane flying in an odd circle pattern for hours before running out of fuel around noon, crashing into the gulf about 120 miles off the coast. >> according to the pictures we saw, the plane spiraling, it tells me that the oxygen system possibly failed. >> reporter: national guard pilots flying beside the cessna noticed the cockpit windows had an icy or foggy look. experts say a sign the cabin lost pressure and its pilot lost vital oxygen. >> they would have equipment on board that they would be able to put on an oxygen mask in that situation. >> reporter: but some say if the oxygen leaked slowly, a pilot might not even know. a sense of euphoria would set in and then sleep. >> obviously, he blacked out. >> reporter: friends say the louisiana doctor kept his eight-seat plane in top notch until his body is recovered, no one may ever know exactly what happened. >> anything is possible. >> reporter: the plane completely sank and no one has found any wreckage yet. there are currently two coast guard ships searching right now with two more on the way. in tampa, alison morrow, abc news. a maintenance worker at a sears in california is accused of placing hidden cameras in the women's fitting rooms and restroom. my biggest fear. police say alejandro gimez may have been videotaping female customers for up to three years. he was arrested and fired last week when those cameras were discovered in the walls by a fitting room attendant. sears has since inspected its restrooms and fitting rooms across the country. today's password is perv. in south carolina, a mcdonald's employee has been arrested for spitting in the drinks of at least two customers. the customers had complained their sweet tea wasn't sweet enough. i didn't know paula deen went to that mcdonald's. their second cups did not have enough sugar, they removed the lids to add more and that's when they saw phlegm floating on top. police say surveillance video caught 19-year-old marvin washington leaning over two cups before filling them. >> it's appetizing. >> i can literally throw up. phlegm floating on top of your sweet tea? >> probably couldn't detect that if you ordered a cappuccino. and on that note, starbucks is going to stop using dye made from crushed up bugs. consumers, particularly vegans, had complained about the use of animal products if various food and drinks. instead the coffee mega
