What is now said to be the reality of Tommy Gilbert jr. s life came into sharp focus monday when he stood before a night court judge charged with the murder of his 70yearold fathered with a multimilliondollar hedge fund. A murder made to look like a suicide, police say. And news that tommy is the prime suspect in an arson investigation. The burning down of this milliondollar home in the hamptons. Police say on sunday night, tommy went to his parents apartment and asked to speak to his father alone. He sends his mother out for a sandwich. She went to get food for junior. About 15 minutes after that she had a bad feeling and decided to return. Reporter she says it was too lates. She found senior on the floor with a bullet hole in his head. She also found a gun resting on his chest with his left hand covering it. Reporter shelby sensed right away that tommy killed her husband and called 911. The wife says the the father on his head. Male white. Jimmy tommy left the murder weapon, a forty caliber glock 22 at the scene to make it look like his father killed himself. Tommy did not enter a plea. We reached out to his attorney who did not wish to comment. The gun laying where it was didnt seem as a selfinflicted wound. Reporter one of the points up for debate motive. It was machineoney. The father discussed no longer paying the rent and talked about cutting his weekly allowance from 400 to 300. Gilbert jr. Reporter and anna says threatening to take away his monthly sti pend may have been the last straw. There was one time we went somewhere and he tried to pay the bill and his credit card was declined. That was quite embarrassing. I didnt question him because i didnt feel it was my place to ask somebody whats wrong with their credit card or where does your money come from or how much money do you have . Reporter tommy sr. Was a well respected founder of wainscot capital funds. They focused on health care and biotech investing and had millions in assets. Jason often worked with thomas senior. When you talk with someone on the phone and they get interrupted, you can see agitation. He never had that. Was always even keeled. Long term. Just very much a professional. Reporter and someone who investeds in sons education. Tommy attended 50,000 a year Deerfield Academy in massachusetts before princeton university. Robby ludwig is a psychotherapist who has not treated tommy but has worked with families like the g boerts s gillberts. A difficult dynamic where the son never felt he could please his father. Contentious. Filled with rage and shame. Maybe the family made excuses fotheir son for a very long time where he was exhibiting problematic behavior that they just assume was immaturity. Or a result of him being spoiled. Reporter the murder allegation was not his first brush with the law. There had been previous arrests, including one for drug possession thats now closed and sealed. Public records show back in september tommy was arrested in South Hampton for violating an order of protection filed by a former friend. He plead not guilty. Three days earlier that Friends Family home was engulfed in flames. Investigators believe it was arson. Abc news can confirm tonight that tommy is the prime suspect. Tommy is currently being held without bail after he was found hiding in his new york city apartment. They found 21 blank credit cards and a skimming device. A skimming device for those that havent prosecuted felonies, its a device you put on an atm machine and it skims the information that people put in when they put their card in. And the skimmer can then use their information to get money. This guy with a princeton degree has a skimming device in his apartment . God help him when he goes in front of a jury. Its very hard to look at a snapshot of how a person reacts after this kind of crime or alleged crime. Thomas jr. s reaction of blankness could have been several things. Number one, in shock and a bit in denial about what happened. It didnt feel real. Or he truly didnt care. Or even worse, felt a sense of relief. Today friends and family are mourning the loss of thomas sr. And the wasted potential of his son tommy who could face up to 25 years behind bars. Tonight there 24 guys perched on a cliff above yosemite who are attempting an unprecedented climb and they are documenting it in real times. T. J. Holmes has the video. Reporter its being called the climb of the century. On a sheer rock cliff, 3,000 feet above Yosemite Park professional climbers are attempting to do what no climber has done before. Free climb one of the toughest routes on earth using only their hands and feet. Ropes only there to protect them from falling. They are attempting to be the first free climbers to conquer el capitan. The journey could take weeks. Its getting pretty rowdy. Reporter these makeshift tents seven feet long bolted and suspended from vertical rock. Getting tossed around like a rag doll. Im on a porto ledge. These two climbers are using one of these secured to a flat surface. They are having to sleep on one of these for weeks possibly trying to make an impossible climb. I have holes here to try to climb the wall. All they have is a flat surface and using their hands and feet. This was no impulse climb. Its been six years in the makeing. Caldwell and jorgensen have planned every step of the way. The last big wall that hadnt been free climbed. When you stand at the base and look up it looks like 3,000 feet of blankness. Theres nothing there. Its steep, intimidating. Just looks like theres no way you could climb it. This footage was shot by big up productions, a Production Company thats been following the climbers throughout their entire yosemite quest for an upcoming documentary. Im grabbing these minuscule edges, jumping between holds, taking huge falls. Theres really an element like, am i going to be able to do this . They set out over a week ago the production crew following their every move. Today is the day. A lot of the snow melted. Thats the hottest part of e day at the hottest part of the route. Feels pretty nice. Climbed all day. Started about 10 00 a. M. We didnt finish until about 10 00 or 11 00 p. M. Tommy and i both felt great. Its been 11 days of hard climbing. Until they reach the top theyll eat, rest and sleep in their makeshift tents. A little tour of our camp setup. Pretty sweet. Right now im just lounging. Got my feet up. This is like a little nightstand. Ive got my ipad for reading books. Two sleeping bags. If anyone is curious, this is our breakfast setup. Hard boiled eggs breakfast sandwich with cream cheese and salmon and cucumber and bell pepper. Pretty good eating up here. They are even getting cell phone reception. Able to post upgrades by solar charging their phones. Fortunate to have good cell phone surface. Solar panels up there to charge their cell phones. Their wives are following their progress back home in colorado. Rebecca says shes not nervous about the dangers of her husbands perilous attempts. They are a climbing family. Their son even has his own miniature wall. I know what its like up there. I know the Safety Systems and how good the gear is and how reliable the ropes and harnesses are. I understand that aspect. I dont have much fear. Theres always a chance there could be a freak accident and someone could get injured. But its pretty unlikely. Grabbing on to total razor blades. And the pitch which i fell on earlier this year is one of the most balancing moves, i still danger is an absolute constant. Climbing a wall completely vertical and the weather can quickly turn brutal. Really calm. A lot of ice built up. Usually little chunks bounce down. Yesterday there was definite big hunks that like go flying by you. The near freezing temperatures are ideal for gripping the mountains. To keep their fingers in shape, they sand them to remove dead skin and apply lotion several times a day. Were taking a rest day today. Ive got to tape two of those Three Fingers which definitely makes it hard to feel what you are hanging on to. I gave it four allout many of us on the ground are questioning why someone would want to go through a climb like this Rebecca Caldwell says for her husband its about more than the thrill of the rise. Climbing is definitely not about an adrenaline rsh. Its about focus and being precise and its about thinking through things. Its really mentally challenging and physically challenging and all of those things together. Its taken a lot of time for tom my and kevin to prepare for this and get everything to align and be performing at peak level in all of those areas to accomplish this. As of tonight, caldwell and jorgensen are resting at about the Halfway Point of el capitan. Still about 1500 feet to go. You want to find something that looks absurd and figure out how to do it.
