East coast as millions dig in against this massive storm. And we do say good morning, america. No snow day for us. Seven states under a state of emergency. The blizzard moving east. Massachusetts really getting hit hard eastern long island, no fun out there, as well. This is a live shot of boston. It is really smack dab in the middle of it right now. That city getting hit harder than anyone else. These pictures from Grand Central, penn station, shut down right now, just empty and it turns out not really snowing here right now. New york not hit as hard as some feared leading to a debate whether safe to be sorry. They would be criticized any way. Our extreme team is fanned out across the east coast covering all angles of this massive storm and, ginger you walked to work this morning. A couple of gopros on your head. The city was a ghost town. It was. This is from my gopro on my head. No one in the streets. Trafficless. It is not something we see. That is why this morning in new york city is remarkable. You see people in the streets here on Seventh Avenue with me so its not the seven inches in new york that we are weigh talking about, its the foot and a half plus to our east and thats where this storm moved. Let me take you straight up here. Canceled for new york city. North and east for parts of massachusetts and maine, connecticut still in it. Winter storm warnings still in place so you still could see a couple of additional inches and wanted to show you the radar. The heaviest band in eastern long island in connecticut and right there just west of boston and it is still going. How about that that is long island. Feet of snow already reported and we know those wind speeds are upward of 50 to even 60 Miles Per Hour in some places. Agig agiggally you can get another foot to two feet in that pink or magenta area but we know this morning one of the spots that is far from over that would be boston and our rob marciano part of the extreme team getting blasted right there. This is one of the main roads downtown atlantic avenue so theyve done a pretty good job plows keep coming through and piling the snow on the side. It continues to swirl. You can see it in the lights and thats going to be the oncoming problem. The drifts will pile up in the realm of some feet and had to move our live shot location. We were close to the water. Coastal flooding is a problem. We had to come further inland. So many facets as the storm came roaring through last night. Overnight, loud and ferocious, that massive winter storm making its presence felt. Newport, rhode island like a howling wind tunnel wind there gusting at more than 60 Miles Per Hour. Just south of boston snow whipping. This nasa image showing the thick layer of white engulfing the east coast. With states of emergencies declared in seven states many governments and schools closed today as officials prepared for the worst. The extreme snowfall should not be taken lightly. Please remain home and off the roads. Reporter this did what it looked like in new york city. Drivers working to beat the clock as the snow rolled in. Crowded roads filled with rush hour commuters soon going from this to this. Times square just outside our gma studios virtually empty. As the storm set in monday some battling the blizzard by bicycle including this delivery guy. Others on skis. Many people shoveling. Others plowing to keep up with the falling snow. Just trying to stay ahead of the storm, you know. Reporter as convoys of the more than 1800 snowplows marched down the barren long island expressway similar scenes in new jersey road crews there struggling to keep the streets clear. Here in boston the streets deserted overnight. Snow swirling in this new england shore town where the fear is not just the snow but the massive flooding. It is going to be an ongoing battle against the blizzard all day long today and through tonight. Boston has shut down not just for today but tomorrow as well. Windchills below zero and as you can imagine, george what this snow feels like when its blowing in your face at 30 and 40 miles an hour it is difficult to take. Hitting 50 right now, we can tell. Get inside. Well stay in that battered region 30 miles east of boston scituate mass david wright is there and is getting battered right now and shut down the power to prevent any fires. Hey, david. Reporter good morning, george. This is one of the first points of land where the whipping winds going into Boston Harbor hit the land and as you can see, the snow is just about blinding here. Right on the other side of that wall of white is the Atlantic Ocean and the concern out here isnt just the snow two inches of it an hour but also the water. I dont know if you can see here but the water at my ankles is ankle deep. This is normally a thoroughfare and some of these exposed coastal communities, one of the big concerns is that they may be cut off. In scituate they cut off the power as a precaution concerned that fire crews wouldnt be able to get out to those houses to save them. Boy, it is really whipping up. Thanks very much. Such a massive storm so we see the situation there and the eastern part of long island also being pounded right now. The snow still falling there this morning. The roads completely shut down. Highways abandoned and abcs tom llamas is in farmingville new york with the latest on the situation there. Good morning, tom. Reporter robin, good morning to you. Were going to need a bigger shovel. When people walk out of their front doors in long island theyre going to see this piles and piles of snow and when its all said and done some parts of long island may have up to two feet of snow. But whats really going to keep people inside today, its not the white stuff, its those whipping winds. Overnight, a grueling commute, millions racing home before the height of the storm and before sweeping travel bans went into effect in five states. By nightfall, those bans turning some of the nations busiest cities into ghost towns. Here on long island 15 inches of snow and whipping winds. Normally one of the busiest highways in the country, the long island expressway completely shut down looking like a desert of snow. Overnight, i rode along with the Suffolk County police. Can we make it up there . Reporter patrolling making sure drivers were off the road. Look closely, just before the 11 00 ban, this car nearly spinning out of control. One of the reasons why the roads are closed visibility is almost zero. This pickup being pulled from a ditch after sliding off the road. The snow is just growing. Its getting worse and worse as the hours go on. Whats really affecting us right now is the wind thats whipping at us. Take a look. The snow is falling every which way you look coming in sideway, coming down. Anywhere you look it is a complete whiteout. Emergency management officials advise stay home and off the roads. And we were out on the roads all night. Most people did listen to the warnings but, unfortunately, one person did die here on long island. A teenager who was out sledding with friends went too fast and slammed right into a light pole. George. Okay tom, thanks very much. Going to go to new york city. No blizzard here but everything shut down the roads are closed. Trains and subways closed as well. Abcs gio benitez there you see overnight everything slowing down and getting empty through the course of the evening. Gio benitez in Columbus Circle Upper West Side of manhattan. Normally busy. Not now. Reporter oh george not at all. Just take a look behind me. This is that famous broadway. This is one of the busiest roads in all of new york city and look at it. It is just desolate just a few people walking by. Not many cars at all. The only ones weve seen are emergency crews walking by and driving by. Take a look. The subway here is where people constantly are getting here at Columbus Circle going underground. Nobody there. I want to show you photos we saw earlier from Grand Central and from penn station. Its just unbelievable that this is what it looks like in new york. Just entirely empty, nobody is there getting to work this morning. And i was with Emergency Management officials last night and i got to tell you, they said that they were relying on these forecasts from the National Weather service and they really did not want to see these stranded cars here on the road so this is going to cost a lot of money, not in terms of any damage but certainly lost business. They wanted to be safe. Err on the side of safety. Gio, thank you very much. Philadelphia was also bracing for the worst and thankfully that didnt happen there either. Really dodging a bullet. At one point it was expecting up to a foot and a half of snow. Right now here in the city just about a half an inch. Further north in the suburbs theyre saying up to 2 inches but the salt trucks still out in force coming here to fill up to load up to make sure the roads are safe but some of them like the one behind me taking off their plows because there just isnt enough snow for them. City officials overnight really voicing frustration about the forecasts and decided to e rchltrr on the side of caution. Only half an inch but they have airports at a standstill creating a Ripple Effect across the country, 4500 Flights Canceled already today. David kerley at Reagan National airport. Quiet all up and down the east coast but a quarter million passengers across the country, im talking all the way to the west coast, have been affected by this storm. This morning, the big five northeast airports some of the busiest in the country are ghost towns except for some passengers who are stuck. A Virgin Atlantic flight couldnt take off late and with new yorks travel ban passengers had nowhere to go at jfk but to the floor to get some sleep. In philadelphia cots for those who are stuck. The lucky ones made it to hotels. If this pushes beyond me getting on a flight by thursday morning, ill not be a happy camper then. Reporter this life flight map usually lyly lyly filled with planes has a gaping hole but its spreading across the country. The blizzard cancellations from those five northeast airports rippling across the country leaving passengers stranded. Id like to be back in new york. I know there is a blizzard but i want to go home. Reporter this morning more than 4,000 Flights Canceled. An estimated 250,000 passengers affected. Im exhausted and annoyed and i just want to go home. Period. I want to go home. Reporter in the early hours of the storm we had a camera on the tarmac at new Yorks Laguardia airport. As plows removed snow trying to get the last flights out. No break for those who wanted to escape on a train. Amtrak shut down too between new york and boston. Late monday commuters took to social media posting pictures of passengers scrambling to board the last train out of boston. And Train Service from new york down here to washington and virginia affected as well. Slower. Heres the good news robin. If the winds die down we didnt get as much snow as expected so the airlines might be able to start gearing up later today earlier than they thought they could get the whole system back up. Really going to be affected through tomorrow as well. When i said i would get to dallas today, you were right. That aint happening. Did not happen but so far so good when it comes to Power Outages, only 10,000 customers affected. Far fewer than you would expect from a storm like this but its not over. Abcs linsey davis is in hartford connecticut, with more on that side of the story. Good morning, linsey. Reporter good morning, robin. Were at a hartford Power Substation with good and bad news. The good news only about 10,000 people without power or i should say its not as widespread as initially feared but do have those 10,000 without power. 8,000 of them right in massachusetts and then you have this snowy as it continues to get wetter and heavier could be problematic and potentially bringing down some of those power lines, in addition to the ones already down in some parts of massachusetts but help is on the way. You do have crews that have come in from across the country to help restore the power. And then additionally some things working in their favor. You have the travel ban so the roads are open and can get right into where they need to go and in a large in addition throughout a lot of new england, the weather, the wind not as bad as some had feared. Now, im no ginger zee but according to our portable handydandy wind reader here our weather system only 5 to 10 Miles Per Hour in the hartford area so not as bad as initially feared. George. Weve had about 11 inches of snow overnight and expecting a lot of snowfall now to be hitting us this morning. About 1 to 3 inches per hour until tonight and winds are picking up in the city of boston. Guys in boston are pretty used to this. Whats the biggest challenge right now . Keeping the main arteries open and staying ahead of the storm. So far people have been in compliance and havent been listening to the ban we have and when people get up thinking theyll go to work when they look outside theyll realize theyre probably not going anywhere fast today. You shut down schools through tomorrow. Do you think youll be back to normal by thursday. Im hoping. Make sure we do the work we need to get dong to clear the roadways tomorrow and thats hoping well be open thursday but as the day goes on well assess it better later on. In new york and other parts south we didnt get hit as hard as some people feared yet youve taken extreme measures shutting down the roads, train stations airports. What do you say to people who think thats an overreaction . Youre better off safe than sorry. Yesterday as we were preparing people were concerned saying oftentimes we get all worked up over the weather and the forecasters say itll be bad and sometimes we dont get as bad of a snowstorm but better off being prepared because in boston right now were being hit pretty hard. If you didnt take the precautions yesterday that we took wed be in a worse situation than we are today so better safe than sorry. You cant really judge. Thank you. All right, george a storm like this is not just dangerous for people driving on the roads, there are hazards for people out shoveling and even playing in the snow. Remember tom told us about the teenager killed sledding on long island. Abcs dr. Richard besser is here with what we can do to stay safe and sound and you were saying dont go out but some people are doing it so layer up. You got to layer up. The wind and cold will add up to frostbite and hypothermia if youre not careful. Several layers of loosefitting closer. You want to go with silk polypropylene over cotton. Cotton is not good at keeping you warm. You want to change clothes if you get wet. Shiver its your body saying go inside. We heard from linsey davis that the Power Outages are not as widespread as feared but for those people who have lost power what do you suggest . Important things to know babies and the elder di having a harder time keeping themselves warm and get somewhere that has the heat. If you use a generator it cant be in your basement it cant be in your garage. It has to be outside because of Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Make sure your monitor is working if youre going to use a generate sfler people will get out there and shovel you know. If you have Heart Disease or not fit, hire someone to do it. If youre in philadelphia or new york city let me explain this to you. Our team was extremely conservative with numbers. We went 8 to 16 inches and even we were a couple off. So this storm moved to the east and thats what it will still be doing. The heaviest bands set up just east of where they could have and could have been a crippling storm. I still didnt think it was going to be as big as a lot of other folks had but look at this. The storm timing takes you right through new england and by early tomorrow morning, we are pretty much through with it. Places like rhode island into eastern massachusetts and maine will still see a little bit of that wind affected too but behind it its going to even be sunny by tomorrow. A lot of other news to get to. Amy has ha. Good morning. We begin with breaking news. An attack inside a luxury hotel inside libyas capital of tripoli. They stormed the corintiha hotel. Five foreigners killed at that hotel. No word how many hostages may have been taken. Well have more details when we get them. Also breaking overnight, terrifying moments athe a City Council Meeting in suburban minnesota. Two Police Officers were shot just outside the meeting and the gunfire was caught on tape. A resolution authorizing the purchase of an electronic sign [ gunshots ] get down. Get down. Everybody, get down. At least five gunshots heard as the counselors took cover. The one on the far left pointed his gun. The two officers shot returned fire killing the gun pman. The motive unclear and two officers are recovering. New concerns about security at the white house after that drone crashed onto the south lawn early monday. The owner saying it was an accident but the indepth is raising many serious questions. A Government Employee says it was his drone, he says it was just an innocent mistake but this investigation continues. All that commotion at the white house after an intrusion into restricted airspace was over this this is the drone broken and tattered seen by a secret Service Officer flying at low altitude on the south lawn early monday morning. Its a socalled quad copter a tiny helicopterstyle device that could be bought at your local electronic store. Law enforcement Officials Say its quiet and flies at ten feet per second but the breach raises all kinds of disturbing questions. What are the white house defenses and what if it had been armed . There are bigger drones that can carry payloads and use some light explosives. Reporter drones are a growing problem. A number discovered off the washington mall. One just a block from the white house. Others found near the lincoln memorial. In a tree at Freedom Plaza and on the capitol grounds. Who sent that at 3 0 in the morning. Law enforcement sources say a Government Employee called the secret service after all that Media Coverage to say it was his recreational device. He says it was just an accident no harm intended. The secret service is investigating his story and its unclear if any charges will be filed. It may all be innocent but the secret service is doublechecking its security measures concerned this new age of drones could be dangerous. Amy. All right, pierre. Thanks so much. Now to dramatic and emotional testimony in the trial of those two former Vanderbilt University Football Players accused of sexually assaulting a female student. One of the defendants taking the stand with his alleged victim in the courtroom. Abcs ryan smith is there in nashville, has the latest for us. Good morning, ryan. Reporter good morning, robin. For two weeks prosecutors have laid out their case against Brandon Vandenburg and cory batey. Batey said of the night in question his recollection foggy but making a crucial admission that could cost him his freedom. Do you take responsibility for yournduct . After seeing the footage, i do. It was me. Reporter testifying in his own defense monday former vanderbilt Football Player cory batey stunned the courtroom admitting he is in a cell phone video that prosecutors say shows him sexually assaulting a female classmate in 2013. Batey even attempting to apologize to the victim from the stand. I would like to extend a personalapology. Reporter batey and Brandon Vandenburg are charged with aggravated rape and sexual battery. Batey testified he was too drunk to remember the incident. Claiming he blacked out after consuming between 14 and 22 drinks that night. What if any, recollection today do you have of that event . None at all. Reporter batey saying he didnt realize what he had done until the next morning finding graphic pictures on his phone on his way to church. I was horrified. I didnt i didnt know how they got there. I immediately deleted them. A lot of things you dont recall. Blame it on the alcohol, correct . Reporter the alleged victim a former neuroscience major and Vanderbilt Dance Team member overcome with emotion when those pictures and cell phone video of the attack shown in court monday but like batey she says she has no recollection of the actual attack testifying last week she had been out drinking that night with vandenburg who she had been casually seeing at the time before passing out. We distorted her voice. I remember waking up in an unfamiliar room at 8 00 something the next morning rt both have pleaded not guilty. Vanden expected to make his close arguments then the prosecution has the final word before it goes to the jury. If both defendants are convicted on all charges they face decades in prison. Robin. Part of New Hampshire have been up there above a foot and not over yet. That low is very close to coastal new england, so what youre seeing on the screen are wind gusts and theyll be anywhere from 30 to 40 Miles Per Hour throughout the day. That goes through tomorrow actually. So its still going to be windy and cold behind this thing. But we had to talk about one other place and that would be a mild southwest. Reporter this morning, the harrowing story behind one of the most dramatic splash landings ever 25yearold pilot lou morton was flying sunday from tracy, california, all the way to maui but he radios to say there is a problem getting gas to the planes engine and hes going down over water, 250 miles short of the nearest airport.
