And we welcome Marcela Garcia from the boston globe and with us today is adrian walker, her globe collegue, and welcome leverett wing executive director of the commonwealth seminar providing training and Networking Opportunities with policy maketories diverse leaders and with us, andrea cabral, former secretary of transportation and also former Suffolk County sheriff who always has Something Interesting welcome to urban update and thank you for coming in. What an election this year has been. I never would have thought it could top 2008 but here we are. I just kind of a general question, what is your biggest takeaway from this crazy election year. One day people are predicting a land slide and then a close race. I guess maybe i will start with from what we have seen . The unpredictbility of this. Polls are all over the place. One thing thank you think will and landslide and then a skal dal hits or then its swings the other way. And on top of that also the anger, and we are talking about it earlier, the hatred that has come out during this campaign, has divided communities and the country is clearly divided. And it is divided families. I have friends who wont talk to each other and whos refused to talk to each other. This has been the most Divisive Campaign that i have been a part of. And didnt let my youthful good looks fool you, i have been doing it for a while. The most divisive that i have seen in ages. Ron what do you make of that . Byron what do you make of they are both down there low. They were enough to win a page Party Nomination and i think Hillary Clintons unlikebility in particular is grossly exaggerated. Byron you mentioned the hatred and so forth, the trump effect or the combination of donald trump and Hillary Clinton . I think i would argue though that it is divided, our communities are divided, but that it is a good thing and i have said this before, it is a good thing it is out in the open. Because communities of color and minorities in general have known and felt racism for years. For the whole time of their life in the u. S. , faced rejection or plain hatred or racism but now that it is in the open that Trump Campaign validated the feelings, that again have existed but under the surface before but now that they are out in the open it is easier to deal with them and expose them and frankly, get rid of them. Those feelings. It will take a while, though. I dont know where it goes from here in terms of healing. But the positions are hard. Byron do you think donald trump is a product of, the hatred in t yes, i agree what what Marcela Garcia said and i think that the high profile position that he currently occupies, has resulted in the normalization of hatred racism, and the normalization of lying on a scale unprecedented even for politics. He literally lies so much that and they become baked into what gets reported as fact. On the one hand i think its important for the rest of the world certainly the rest of the country to see what people of color have been talking about as Marcela Garcia points out in terms of racism and this everyday experience that people have it. On the other hand im deeply concerned that he puts a public face on it, because he is the nominee of a major party and all news, there are several independents related, some directly to this impowerment. He got the endorsement of the klan newspaper. White nationalists are campaigning and going to the polls to intimidate voters on behalf. That has not happened. Being divided is not new. Trampled every norm of elections. We have a Major Party Nominee who wont release his tax returns woonts tell the more than people where he gets his money from and wont say if he will accept the results of the election, there has they have been anything like that. The most damaging campaign. And Hillary Clinton, she has her problems as well. Byron and one thing that struck me throughout the campaign is how many not supporting her, younger women. Does anybody think these emails, does anybody care, what do you think about that . What about the number of women who are not supporting hillary . I dont think the emails have are making that much of a difference. People have begun to ash sosh how, what a nothing burger this is and the idea of the fbi date is a help to her. Younger women usually dont understand the shoulders they stand on, and it is tougher for them to appreciate what she has done and all that has come before her to be in the position that they are in. It takes a few years and a little maturity for people to catch on to that. Byron what about what Marcela Garcia said, this election, i dont know if its donald trump or the election in general, has it damaged democracy . I think it hasnt help bud i think i had this conversation with friends last week. We are a resilient democracy. We have overcome a civil war and all the Different Things and we can overcome donald trump. So im not worried about democracy. It may carry on until the inauguration, if the one thing that i think e mail thing, that have lessened her margin of victory and i dont think the whole email thing will change who wins. But if it did, if it did lessen her margin of victory it may lessen her victories in place shes was targeting like arizona or georgia. Even right now North Carolina and florida are being seen as tossups. So the leave no doubt mandate that she was looking for may not a cure which will maybe not concede or try to invalidate the process that will carry up to Inauguration Day. That may be a mess. But ultimately i think we as a democracy we are resilient. Let me say this. I dont think trump will win but i do worry about what a Trump Presidency which is in the incon severable. He is openly antidemocratic. We may not have elections for a it wouldnt be so blind about it. Byron what about the voting process, early voting and the number of people coming out. They are saying there is a suggestion the number of white voterses up and number of black voters are down because obama is not on the ticket. Latino voters, they are fired up about this election. When you, does anything stand out to you in terms of the early voting and who is voting and who n evidence in the early voting in florida, they have voted the right twice as large as the last election. So you know, there is evidence that everything that we have. Saying that will happen, that a Trump Campaign would you know, incite the voters. Ron run they are voting against donald trump . This is a Hillary Clinton Hillary Clinton or both . For hillary, yes. Right. It is for Hillary Clinton but it is a vote against donald trump as well. And there is evidence all over the country that voter registrations are up. I think it will have an impact on the latino vote for sure. We will take a quick round here on the predictions. What do you think or what is most important thing that you want voters to think of, will it be close or riding out, on november ninth . I think on november ninth, what happens if Hillary Clinton wins and what happens to this large, millions of name voted for trump, do they create their own party or, that happens to them . That is the biggest question. Adrian, what do you think . Trump has to win every state up in the air, he wont win in pennsylvania or wisconsin. I think she will win. I say clinton by about 3 chaos on Inauguration Day and it is broadcast by trump have. His ultimate plan. Byron everyone is so Hillary Clinton will win. Lets say she does win. What happens to donald trump the next day . What do you think we will see from him . He will play golf. I will take him at a word. The one true thing he said. I will predict on your show trump tv will ever happen. Ron run will the Republican Party revive itself or will they be dead . Ron run well leave it and see what happens, a couple of days to go. Leverett wing, andrea cabral, adrian walker, Marcela Garcia, thank you for coming in. And know you will be working late on Election Night like i will, too. Well see what happens. When we come back, the discussion turns to Charter School expansion, another one of the hotly debated questions on the ballot on tuesday. Well be back right here talking to both sides. Stay with us. Kelly ayotte blocked lower cost generic drugs. Youre paying high Interest Rates on college loans. Ayotte voted against letting you refinance at lower rates. And youre paying higher bank fees while ayotte voted for special breaks to wall street executives. Kelly ayotte. Shes siding with corporate special interests and thats costing you. Shes not working for New Hampshire. They are the bedrock of our communities. The place where 96 of our kids are educated. But even now, these local schools are losing more than 400 Million Dollars a year to privatelyrun Charter Schools. And if question 2 passes, it will only get worse. We cant let that happen. To protect our Public Schools and the right of all our kids to a quality education, vote no on question 2. Byron this year your vote will not only chose a this you president but it will also decide on four binding statewide ballot questions. Our next segment will focus on ballot question number 2, and Charter School expansion. A yes vote will allow up to twelve approvals each year of enrollments in differenting schoolance a no vote would make no change in current laws and would not allow any more Charter School expansion. To give you their views, we invited both sides this morning. We are asking thome present their case without entering into criticism of the other side, we want to offer each side an unfiltered platt form to state their case. Ri opponent of the yes on 2 campaign. The massachusetts director of families for Excellent Schools and board member of democrats for education reform. And on the other side we have marisol santiago, an active and vocal chelsea parent who is a no on question two, field director. Welcome to urban update ladies. And thank you for coming in. By the pos of the coin today, keri lorenzorodrigues you get to go first. Kids in urban communities to have access to more Charter Schools . You are yes on 2. Because these schools are performing for children in urban centers. Today a report that was released talking about how Charter Schools have doing incredible job in terms of educating children in urban centers in massachusetts. And every single Charter School in massachusetts is level 1 or level 2. There are Charter Schools in urban centers in massachusetts. There are 47 of the children in urban set thanks are in level 3, level 4, or 5 schools. Parents are crying out for this. In are tens of thousands of chin on the wait list in our urban center whos want these schools and thats why im here to ask folks to vote yes on 2. Ron run and you are no to oh question two. How would that Impact School where are you opposed . Im really concerned with the current setup of the Charter Schools and the way Public Schools chair the themes. Statewide currently Charter Schools are taking out 450 million out of a local district, budgets, and in boston alone 135 million. And i feel that given the current instruct you ares and seen from past, i dont see how we could in good conscience vote on a ballot measure. I agree there is room to improve public ides. Im in the sure that given what we know and the facts this is the best way to do so. Byron keri lorenzorodrigues, you know some people may have their vote influenced by who is supporting it. Who supports your position . Endorsed by every major newspaper in massachusetts including the boston globe and Standard Times of new bedford. Newspapers looked at this and said the funding argument is rlg not true. Charter Schools Education 3. Nine of the children in massachusetts and 400 million is 3. 9 of education funding. We spent tele16 billion on education and that is fractiontion of w the money on. To be honest it is frustrating because there is not a lot of conversation regarding the rei will burstment for many la. The boston globe and Boston Herald many incidents supports us on this. We were up to 208 School Committees statewide. They supported our resolution managing School Budgets and the mayor marty walsh and boston City Councils a our city council of over a hundred state legislators. And but most importantly parents and students and educators who have been at the front and center of this movement and at the end of the day this is who we are and that means the lives of the folks most impacted and im preproud to core of our support. Byron keri, talk to me, you think Charter Schools closed achievement gap in communities of color . The data is very clear. There have been independent study is by m mit and harvard saying Charter Schools do incredible work in neighborhoods color can only access failing schools that are not serving their needs. When you look at the high performing char tr schools the department of elementary and secondary has given accolades to phoenix charter and Excel Academy in east boston. Incredible work in terms of catching kids up to grade level when they leave a failing District School setting. Marcela garcia a recent report schools on municipal credit rightings. This question were to pass, what do you think the affect on credit rightings and city credit rightings would be . Moodies for example, can you tell us about that . Clearly a gold star Rating Agency released a report or an article saying that currently boston is triple a rating. For folks that need a Little Agency that oversees the way finances are able to in fact get alone, and how they a loan and how they balance budgets. When you share that there is misconceptions about whether it will impact funding. We have an agency that says this would be devastating. Ron run hurt the citys Credit Rating. Absolutely. Become to politicized for people to make a rational judgment about this . Unfortunately that is perfect example. Ed moodys rating was based on an email and we Vice President seen the report in terms of how they evaluating how our Credit Rating would change in cities across massachusetts. And frankly, a lot of the problem has on do with fiscal irresponsibility in the district adjust their budget. If they lose a child you get reimbursed for six years to make sure your budget is on point. If you cant figure that out, that is fiscally irresponsible. Ron run what about what the reports say about how charters, some believe will underserve a special ed student and els students . Charters are not equipped to serve every single child the day that they show up on the doorstep. In fact there is Credible Data that shows that latinos and africanamerican students are suspended at a very much higher right in Charter Schools than they are in Public Schools. Also the teachers that are educators in the Public Education system go through various certainfications in that have disabilities and charters are not equipped to do the same. Ron run thank you. We have to leave it there. A come of days left and people make up their mindance hopefully you have helped our viewers make up their minds, though. Marcela garcia keri lorenzorodrigues vote yes and marisol santiago note no. Coming up next, ranging from comedy to details on the upcoming boston jewish Film Festival on urban update. And Family Friendly movies and a live pod cast taping and we reach out to everyone in boston. Shown across town. We have photos of some of the movies, if we could put one up there. Getting a little preview of on take a look. This is a film called jerry lewis the man behind the clown. You cant tell behind that nose. And it looks like jerry lewis and his whole life and his career. And also asks the question what made him so appealing to the french and not so much to americans. Byron and lets look at another one. Stories of israels Basketball Team which in 197 beat the sioux in the height of the Cold Soviet Union in the height of the cold war. Americans players played for the team and many stayed in israel after. And it was miracle on ice type of story. And this is the freedom to marry. I love this film a documentry that we are screening on veterans day about the fight for legalization of samesex marriage battle. And one more. This is that we are doing, an event called gary lucas on the coolidge on move tenth. Old betty boop cartoons and popeye with music that was inspired by them. Ron run why the Film Festival is important to the community in really taking people from across the Jewish Community ran across the community at large, bringing them together, and you are sitting with, near people getting conversations with people, and they are people, many people come, for instance, the Latino Community comes out. And i think bringing people together, learning what we have in common and what we can learn from each other is really important. Ron run where can folks information and tickets .
