What you were saying, it weakened as it moved onshore. That is similar to what were seeing to the south. Hopefully that continues. Its this cell were watching to the south. I think the water temperature is still very cold now this mid60s. That could be weakening the storms as they move in. But boy, look at this, torrential downpours, frequent lightning crews most of the area. Oil prices have been dropping months after month since last fall and the low prices meant big savings at the gas pump. Consumer reporter John Matarese looks into why were not getting a break on other things that use oil so you dont waste your money. Reporter oil prices have collapsed in recent months. P plunging from 100 to 30 a barrel. Great for us at the pump but have you noticed prices havent dropped on many products made with oil . With the price of gas well below 2, a fillup costs almost half what it did a few years ago. Airlines are also enjoying cheaper fillups. But airfares havent really fallen. Hmm. Tire manufacturers blamed High Oil Prices for their recent tire well over 100 but tire prices havent fallen. Hmm. And the price of motor oil in the Auto Parts Store jumped to 6 and 7 a quart the past few years. Crude oil is down but motor oil isnt. Hmm again. From the doesnt that stink file, those annoying fuel surcharges from shipping services and the garbage man. We understood them two years ago most people dont anymore. Which may have you saying doesnt that stink . Service providers say they keep these surcharges in case gas prices spike again. And say they are lower than theyve been in years. Again, hmm. Bottom line, when Oil Prices Spike prices we pay rise quickly but as prices fall it takes much longer for the benefits to trickle down. That stinks as always dont waste your money. Im John Matarese. Abc action news. Were in weather alert mode. Strong storms, gusty winds, moving through the bay area now. Ivan is tracking a potential possibly for tornadoes. I think some counties we can begin to lift out of that even though they are not officially out. Lets take a tour of what is going on with the tornado watch. If youre watching us this morning, we have that for citrus, pasco, hernando, then the Storm Prediction Center saw some cells that were pretty strong and exhibiting rotation offshore. So they decided to extend the watch which is still in effect by the way for another 40 minutes for all of us from citrus to sarasota. Lets break down the radar, its pouring, frequent lightning and gusts over 40 Miles Per Hour. As far as severe storms, 60 Miles Per Hour or above, no warnings like that at this hour. That may change with cells off shore but right now doesnt look likely. Further to the north, quiet across citrus and hernando but that will blind you if youre driving around. Northern pinellas beginning to clear out. We still have this tail that is about to come in. Its going to move in towards portions of Manatee County the next several hours. All of this in association with a big cold front, the one that brought the Severe Weather yesterday to the panhandle but you see the low there, that is continuing to move to the north so we were never expected to the kind of weather they had across the panhandle yesterday but for us i think what remains here are gusty winds, over 40 Miles Per Hour, that could cause damage if you have trees that are weak and certainly with the heavy downpours, that could come down on a power line, tico already reports outages there. The lightning will be an issue as well. The watch futurecast, as we head into the early part of the afternoon, were going to continue to see this line pushing in, then clearing out by the time we get to 3 00, 4 00. Then were done. The winds wont be over, were going to see gusty winds with remainder of the day, then behind the front that continues, very windy. Look at the stretch of cold weather. Highs in the 60s with overnight lows in the 40s through the weekend. So again tornado watch continues in effect. Well keep you posted. Its pouring out there. Ill have the latest on when the storms will be here, and were coming up on half an hour left of the tornado watch for counties from citrus all the way to sarasota. We continue to monitor some heavy downpours here, were going to hear the thunder in the studio and certainly if youre heading out, heads up, this is going to be an issue on the roadways. Were winning winning, republican president ial frontrunner donald trump is basking in his nevada caucus victory today. Every year across the country more than 400 people died due to wrongway drivers and its a problem that continues to grow right here in the state of florida. Coming up in a live report the steps local Law Enforcement is taking to alert the public and also to save lives. At 9 30 we begin with the weather alert. Tornado watch in effect across several bay area counties. Families from citrus on the north side to sarasota on the south side need to be on high alert. It will expire in the next 30 minutes or so but its still coming down. Not in the clear yet. No. In fact were talking about the heavy downpours that continue leer with the frequent lightning and gusts 40 Miles Per Hour. That is enough to blow Patio Furniture around. Heres the thing, since this morning, since weve been covering this, no severe thunderstorm warnings so far, conditions remain favorable for some strong thunderstorms here but at this point, in a half hour all this will expire. I think at this point the tornado threat in fact already diminished significantly, further to the north and is continuing to diminish for the rest of us. So what we have left, heavy downpours, frequent lightning and gusts probably up to 40 Miles Per Hour. In fact that icon there, at gulfport indicating 43 mileper hour winds. Here we are in citrus and Hernando County and western pasco, beginning to get into the clear. Not even raining at this time. There are still some showers that will continue to move off to the north and east but nothing severe. Well continue down 75 and take you to tampa, were still pouring now but within the next few minutes it will end and rather quickly as everything continues to push. In fact, ill loop this so you can see what is going on. Look how quick its moving to the north and east. Again there are still pockets offshore. As we continue further south, portions of manatee to sarasota, bradenton, still in pockets of heavy weather there, then this moving in, no lightning associated with this, what does that mean . Its weakening, so that is excellent news, ive not seen rotation the last halfhour with this as it continues to head in. But we are looking at some very heavy rainfall. No question bit. As all of this moves to the north and east and rather quickly. By the way if youre in polk youre in pretty decent shape now as far as the rainfall. Light to moderate rain. But of course its coming from your west so in the next 10, 15 minutes youre going to get heavy downpours as everything continues to frame on to the north and east. Futurecast shows this nicely. By the time we get to 1 00 everything continues moving south. Look at the clearing. Its going to come. In a little showers left over but at that point the cold front would have moved through. That will be the story the next few days. Full sunshine heading into the weekend and cooler temperatures. And watching breaking news from overnight. The National Weather service fact hit pensacolaa, that area of the panhandle with heavy winds and also pretty really heavy rains last night. The damage is pretty extensive. Chuck e cheese says it hopes to put parents at ease by mutting a Security Guard in place starting this weekend. Suspects who started the fight took off, still on the run. With the weather alert we continue with the tornado watch, just a few minutes left at this point. I think the threat continues to downpours this morning, wind gusts in excess of 30 Miles Per Hour. Much quieter to the north and then pockets of very heavy rainfall continues certainly across portions of eastern pasco and into hillsborough as well. Pinellas getting a break now but again theres more activity offshore, not looking severe to me at all at this time. Further to the east polk county looking at a light to moderate showers here. Then eventually well get all this heavy rainfall on top of you here. More to come in the next half hour to hour. More heavy rainfall. Again theres this cell that is about to move in. Doesnt look severe and winds associated with it not that strong but could have gusts up to 30 Miles Per Hour and pockets of heavy downpours. When will this be over . By the time we get to 1 00 i think this will all push south and east. The reason its been a bit of a slow moving system here is that weve had a northerly component to it. A northeasterly movement so we have not been able to truck this through. Be in better shape. We have 70s but i want to show you what is going to happen later today. Temperatures dropping into the days. Small craft advisory is in tomorrow. Three to five foot seas today. Six to 10 feet by tomorrow. So despite the fact we lose the gusty winds from the thunderstorms were going to front. There just wont be rain associated with it. Very windy on thursday. Gusts to 40 possibly here as temperatures fall back into the mid60s and then look at that. 40s for overnight lows, were back to winter friday, 62 about it for the high. We stay dry through the weekend but cool, 40s and highs in the mid and upper 60s. Its 9 46. Students spent 10 days with candidates for president. I lost my voice, i dont usually lose my voice. When i did i was like oh, this trip is going to be fun. But i kept going. Talked to people as much as possible and reached out and they were so much more accepting than i expected. We have a breaking news. We have a Tornado Warning that is issued by the National Weather service. Includes extreme portions of eastern pasco county along with northwestern polk county. A small area here but theres enough rotation indicated on now. Its valid until 10 15 so we have another 25 minutes or so, with this warning. This will all continue moving to the north and east. In fact its doing so at 35 miles an hour. That will put it outside of our area in the next few minutes, but this is where the warning is, east of zephyrhills, doesnt include you but includes portions of extreme northwestern polk county, parts of looks like sumter, this headed to the north and east so. Again this is not a watch at this time. Its a Tornado Warning. Its radar indicated, theres enough rotation on the radar for them to go ahead and prompt this. Were all under the watch as we talked about for another nine minutes. Sometimes you get flareups, pulses of thunderstorms even as they make it onshore. So again all of this headed off to the north and east around 35 miles an hour. Im going to step off camera, to show you exactly what is happening with this cell. Put this in motion and show you this is indeed headed to the north and east and doing rather rapidly here. Its going to be out of our viewing area within the next 10 minutes or so. As you see this is the particular cell here that is warning. Ill put a track there and show you exactly where this is headed up, towards clairmont, you see across extreme southern portions of Sumter County. These are quickmoving cells rotation for the national prompt that Tornado Warning. The velocity product basically indicates on doppler where the rain is moving. If you get enough green and red that just means basically theres enough significant rotation there. I dont see that much. This is one of those things where there is enough rotation and this is radar indicated. We dont have indication its reported on the ground. In fact we certainly dont at this moment. All this headed to the north and east. This is what we have. In fact, ill pull this out a little. Able to show you sometimes these things are so fluid, the Tornado Warning is partially in an area where we didnt even have a watch. So again its this Little Pocket here and this storm is certainly, has the capability to put down a tornado but now doesnt look all that impressive as it continues to race off to the north and east. For Sumter County that is going to be an issue in the next few minutes, if youre watching this, again from extreme northwestern polk county, polk this, this is going to be going to your north. Where you get gusty winds, but the rotation associated with it is going to be headed off to your north. Again its this little angle here, little polygon here, highlight it for you its this area here that is under the Tornado Warning. Very small area east of zephyrhills along 98. Then crossing over to Sumter County. This will happen again in the next few minutes. Zooming out a little, just to give perspective on how fast all of this is moving, to the north and east, the only area under a Tornado Warning now, all of us have been talking about this, with shay included, that we had the possibility under a watch which is what we have of rotating thunderstorms. All of this looked benign then all of a sudden this cell decided to come one a little spin the last several minutes so the Weather Service said its post that warning. Its in effect until 10 15 this morning. Well be out of here. Its moving about 35 miles an hour so this thing is trucking to the north and east. So put a track on it there and there you see parts of Sumter County now being included. If youre watching us not from extreme northwestern polk county, this does not involve you but you are experiencing certainly some heavy rainfall and still we are looking at that tornado watch until five more minutes but right now just looks to me like a significant wind event for the rest of us here. 40 mileperhour, perhaps 50 mileperhour winds. Heavy downpours continuing. But as far as the threat, biggest threat now, that includes northwestern polk county which is where we have the Tornado Warning and across portions of extreme southeastern pasco county here. That does not include by the way up in citrus and hernando. You see the polygon . That is the Tornado Warning. So well stay with you and continue to track, to see if we have reports coming in. Youve got two types of tornado one. Then you have the one that either media or Police Officers have noted, reported tornadoes. That we dont have here, but we treat them both equally as if they were producing a tornado, because obviously better to be safe than sorry. Again, heading up towards bay lake in about a halfhour. This will be out of the area here in fact at about 15 minutes. Meaning our viewing area, eastern pasco and portions of northwest polk county. Back on the velocity here, velocity product, again shay with me, doesnt look that impressive, shay enough of a rotation, where they decided to go ahead and post this warning. Ill loop that for you. See that green there that just popped up in the last few images . That would have been the indication of rotation. That would have been northeast by the way of crystal springs. Northeast of zephyrhills. And at this point my goodness, looks like its even weakening this is a radar image we dont normally show on air. What this helps to show this is what you normally see on air which is the reds and yellows and oranges and greens that show the amount of rainfall that youre getting, or the intensity of the rainfall. When you switch to the other mode. Its what we like to use to show if there is any rotation. So it is showing the Storm Movement and so when you see the reds next to a green, that is when it indicates that you may have some spin out there. So that is what ivan was showing you on the last image. About an hour loop of the radarem you can see how quickly its moving. Tornado warning prompted east of zephyrhills. If youre watching from us there you dont have to worry about it. Youll be on the back side of the rainfall itself in the next few minutes. This is underway as far as the Tornado Warning just for extreme portions of pasco county, northwestern polk county and getting into portions of Sumter County. I want to let everybody know why im holding my cell phone here. That may seem weird but its important because a lot of people are not watching tv so we want to get the word out to as many people as possible and as many platforms as possible. Again east of 98 is where we have the Tornado Warning continuing to move quickly to in this is heading into that clairmont area so if youre headed into that area, just to our well to our north of i 4, again that is that is one of the bigger town that is in the path. Youre at least going to be gusty winds. But a lot of the heavy rain, i would say even heavier rain and thunderstorms across the lakeland area, not necessarily associated with this warning area. No question there are pockets of much more significant downpours but as far as what would be threatening to you and me on the ground, this would be the cell here because of the rotation and that certainly is nothing to mess with. 10 15 is when it expires for pasco, polk and sumter counties. Warnings and they last for a halfhour. An indication of a couple of things, how relatively weak this rotation is. Which is why theyve prompted it until 10 15. They may extend it, i dont think so but also an indication of how fast its moving, 35 to 40 Miles Per Hour on the back side you see it moving along 98 now. As we continue with the radar, you will be able to see heres what shay was talking about. Look at the heavy rain rolling through polk. So important to know, if you are watching us from lakeland its thundering outside now. Its pouring outside now. But you are not under a Tornado Warning. That is only for the extreme northwestern part of polk county heading east of pasco there as well. Zooming in a little and it is if there is a tornado on the ground its what we call rain theres so much rain associated moving through. Like what we had with our big event a few weeks ago. Right now. This is going to be ending pretty quickly too. In fact around zephyrhills moving. Direction. So the threat is certainly the warning is posted until 10 15 but i would say that you are going to start to see even the rain letting up in that warning now. Within the next couple of crystal springs, youre starting to dry out as well. So again were seeing the tail end of this system, what has brought us just got cancelled. These things sore fluid and can can happen so rapidly. So the National Weather service decided, guess what . Theres not enough rotation with this. This cell is weakening so were going to go ahead and cancel it 15 minutes earlier. Thats whats going on, if youre watching from any other
