Our week. Good morning. Im emily riemer. Randy and im randy price. Were tracking every angle of the storm. Were out there this morning as things start to happen. Our reporters, videographers and meteorologists are covering every angle for you. Cindy is leading our coverage for the timing. Cindy a few of you are going to see this storm working in here over the course of the Morning Hours. It will ramp up quickly. Not just snow but wind. That has prompted blizzard warnings south of boston the winds could get up to 65 Miles Per Hour. Elsewhere it is a winter storm warning until 7 00 tomorrow morning. That combination of heavy snow and sustained winds of 30 Miles Per Hour. North and west once you get into Southern New Hampshire and west of worcester it is a Winter Weather advisory. The winds wont be as strong. Take a look at the raid rar right now. We are snowing on nantucket and the vineyard. Notice too its having a hard time kind of lifting north ward. That will be the theme this morning. It will take a while for the snow to push on in. Still quite far away. Typically a storm more than 500 miles away from us would not be affecting us like this. This one is so big indeed it is. Through the Morning Hours by 8 00 a. M. The bulk of the snow still over southeastern massachusetts but by mid to late morning here it comes and once it gets in here late morning through the midday hours, we are talking about really intense bands of snow. Snowfall rates of 12 inches per hour. Roads are going to become snow covered and slippery. The visibility will be reduced here. This intense snow is with us right up until the evening commute with the snow only slowly tapering off as we get into the overnight hours. So when it is all said and done a widespread 610 snowfall across a good portion of the area. North and west of the worcester area. Those oceaneffect bands cape ann down towards the south shore and upper cape could produce localized spots up over 10 inches of snow there. The winds are starting to crank up. Wind gusts at 40 Miles Per Hour at the coast. That will knock back the wind chill here. By days end it will feel like its in the Single Digits and teens. Randy as you mentioned the winds are a concern this morning especially on cape cod where theyll get the brunt of the high tide a little bit later. Emily Danielle Vollmar here tracking that side of the story for us. How is it looking. Danielle good morning. That is correct. Those winds piling up that water. That high tide at 11 00 a. M. Today, there is some concern with some coastal flooding. The winds are very powerful as cindy mentioned over 40 Miles Per Hour. So we do have the Coastal Flood Advisory and a coastal flood lets take you through everything and show you whats going on. If you live along the coastline in boston towards the north shore, towards the seacoast of New Hampshire and into maine, coastal flood advisories are in effect. Two hours before and two hours after high tide. Were looking for minor splashover in those locations. But then as you shift farther to the south, notice around the south shore down to the cape and even nantucket included in this, its a coastal Flood Warning. So we are looking for pockets of moderate flooding. What does that mean . You could see some road closures. You could also see some flooded base manies. You know it if you live by the the reason why well see this water pile up. Heres why. Chatham wind speed over the next 12 hours looks like this. Those winds are sustained at 035 to even 40 miles an hour at a time. Were looking at gusts 5060 miles an hour plus as we go through the day and obviously it will be snowing all day long. Right now not snowing just yet. How are the roads. Olessa in good shape. A live look outside for you at the pike by allston brighton. Traffic getting by without any problems. If you need to get somewhere, now is the time to go. Lets get to the maps. No construction to contend with right now. Youre in good shape as you travel into boston. South of town everybody getting by at the speed limit. Route 3, 24 and 95 looking good. As you travel the pike and route 9 this morning issue free. North of town youre doing okay as well. The trains and the bus s are schedule. Were keeping an eye on the roads for you. Kelley tuthill is live in boston driving for us. How is it looking, kelley . Kelley good morning, olessa. Looking good so far. The trucks pretreating the roads this morning. No snow yet as you can see. A windy, cold morning. Thank goodness we had melting over the weekend making the situation a little better. On the highway same story. We will tell you that governor baker did tweet overnight he believes the storm will create . Hazardous driving conditions. Hes urging people to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Reporting live in roslindale, im Kelley Tuthill, newscenter 5, back to you, randy. Randy we can add to that right now. Nonemergency state employees in the commonwealth are being told to stay home. Executive branch employees who live in barnstable, bristol, dukes, essex, middlesex, nantucket, norfolk, plymouth and Suffolk County should not go to work today. State offices in those counties will be closed today. There are concerns, doug. Doug d. P. Workers have been at it getting prepared for this storm. Parts of brockton just getting their power back on after the last now. Now they are on alert for round two. Crews from as far away as quebec blanketed this area of the state clearing fallen trees and trying to get the lights back on for thousands of people. Here in brockton, theyre definitely concerned that could happen again. Schools are closed. And the mayor says theyre only just recovering from fridays storm. We certainly have a lot of tree limbs coming down and taking wires with them. We have to worry about the falling limbs. We also have to worry about live wires now. Doug many utility crews were supposed to go home last night. Instead, they got the call to stay put, ready for the next storm. Again, the best advice is if you dont have to travel today, just stay off the roads and let crews live in brockton this morning, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. All day long as this storm intensifies. Cutins during good morning america, updates every half newscenter 5 starting at 4 00 p. M. The candidate getting targeted by chris christie, and one contenders stance on a female draft. Randy plus one strange super bowl ad, courtesy of mountain dew. The creature that has people talking this morning. Cindy blizzard warnings up for areas south of boston all the way down to the cape. When the worst of the snow and wind is over, and the cold that is going to be moving in for next week. That is all ahead. First, take a look at how large this system is here on the radar as we expand the view you can see it. It is spinning more than 500 miles away from us. But the outer bands of snow already moving on to parts of this is the First Grade Class from the wood end elementary massachusetts. We are having an Awesome School year. Good morning, america. Good morning, eyeopener. Randy good morning, wood end super bowl, but these kids were showing off their Patriot Pride when we visited a few weeks ago. Com and upload it in the ulocal section of our website. Olessa if they want to learn to stay healthy, keep them away from me. Cindy are they in school today . Olessa probably not. Cindy there are a lot of kids a lot of kids have it on the heels of having friday off. Kind of a fourday weekend for some. This storm very different than what we experienced on friday though because its not just the snow. It is the strong winds. That combination along the coastline leads to coastal flooding. We also have some concern for Power Outages over the nature of the snow wont be as heavy and wet this goround. Danielle vollmar is in and going to talk about that in just a moment. What is is a blizzard . It doesnt have to do with the amount of snow. Its the wind and the snow reducing that visibility to near whiteout conditions. We think that is a distinct possibility here. Likely south of boston for the south shore, the cape and the islands as the winds may gust to 65 Miles Per Hour combined with that heavy, wet snow to really make travel almost impossible. So really tough here in southeastern massachusetts where you see the pink. That is most of us here. We do have a winter storm warning. This is until 7 00 tomorrow morning so winds sus tawn r tained at 30 Miles Per Hour with lighter winds to the north and west of this area. West of worcester, Southern New Hampshire. And were talking about a potential wind gust of 30 Miles Per Hour, but you can see theyre going to be much, much coastline. Were already in the winds. Notice the winds are right now gusting over 40, close to 50 Miles Per Hour along the coast. The coast of rhode island we just clocked a wind gust over 60 Miles Per Hour. Pretty incredible stuff considering how far away our storm is at this point. Temperatures running in the 20s over the interior. We are in the lower 30s along the coastline but the temperatures will be falling as the day wears on and the snow gets going. The winds will shift around from the northeast to the north. Notice how the temperatures drop into the mid 20s here this afternoon. And with the winds blowing, wind chills will be in the Single Digits and teens by this afternoon. Do keep that in mind. You can see the snow making very little progress here toward the north and west. It is backing in at this point. And the outer bands of snow are reaching more than 500 miles from the center of the storm toward the north and east. We are just start to go see this storm spread in now. By 8 00 this morning, i think its really still over southeastern massachusetts where were dealing with the snow but very quickly after 8 00 a. M. That snow is going to spread north ward so by late morning through mid afternoon here, midday, were talking about real intense bands of snow here showing up. Within these bands just like we saw on friday, the snow is going to come down hard at a rate of one to two inches per hour. You couple that with the very strong winds. Snowcovered, slipper erodes reduce visible. Travel will be very difficult here right through the afternoon. By 4 00, notice were still getting the snow and then thereafter it begins to taper in intensity. However, through about 11 00 tonight, it is still snowing very gradually the snow is going to wind down during the overnight hours. When its all said and done, it is a widespread area of 610 inches of snow. A little bit less than six inches once you get outside the worcester area. With those oceaneffect bands cape ann all the way down here shore, plymouth down to the upper cape this is where we could see over 10 inches in spots. A little bit less as you head toward nantucket and 610 for the mid and the outer cape. The consistency of the snow very different in most areas from what we dealt with on friday. Lets get to that now with danielle. Danielle thats right, cindy. The air temperature is is actually below the freezing mark in a lot of spots especially north and west of the city. So youre going to start off with powdery snow but there are concerns at the start of this for heavy, wet snow the farther south and east you live. In fact, as you look on this graphic, you see that orange there. That is the area of concern for wet snow to start with wind guffs especially at the coastline at 5060mileperhour plus. There could be the potential for Power Outages. I know a lot of you are concerned with that because you saw a lot of that on friday. Here is why. Notice north and west of boston right now were in the 20s but south and east, were in the mid 30s. So temperatures are borderline. Thats why once that snow starts its going to be heavy and wet. It continues through about 10 00. We start to see the south shore, the cape drop into the 20s through the day. And again that reason why is because those winds are going to be gusting out of the north and east at about 5060 miles an hour. Really bringing down that cold air. For more of the extended forecast heres cindy. Cindy cold air. Look at the temperatures overnight. Teens and 20s for overnight lows so tomorrow starting out very chilly but were not done with the snow yet this week. I have additional light snow and flurries in the forecast on tuesday. Some scattered light snow showers lingering first thing in the morning and then those will let up. During the afternoon, there may be some oceanenhanced andeffect snow bands that really target the coastline. Very being as layings expected on tuesday. We go into wednesday and still light snow in the forecast. Not a big storm per say. The storm will be cutting by to our south. That may keep the steadiest snow here south of boston so there may be additional light accumulations on wednesday. By thursday, arctic front coming in. Were drying it out. Look at the cold coming in. Temperatures dropping by the weekend. Coldest air of the entire season. Were talking about highs only in the teens and by sunday morning, lookate at that. Many spots near or even below zero. Coldest air of the season on the way. But snow on its way in, olessa, this morning. Conditions will be deteriorating pretty quickly. Olessa if you need to get to where youre going, go now. Right now were in good shape. No problems to report. All the overnight construction we typically see not a factor this morning. Youre in good shape getting into boston. Nice and light trip and so far so good as you head south of town, 24, 95, route 3 all nice and light. So is the pike and route 9 for you this morning. As you travel north of town, 93 southbound also looking okay out of methuen and all the way down to the leverett connector. Trains and buses starting the morning on schedule. Emily thank you. I expect those bands to pivot closer to boston by late morning and continue all afternoon. Its not just the snow. Winds gusting over 40 Miles Per Hour already along the coastline. Its going to bring blizzard conditions to cape cod. Already we have strong winds in the area. This will be not just our first chance. Well have other snow this week. Good morning. Im randy price. Emily goodie. Olessa excellent. Randy a good week to look forward to. Emily im emily riemer. Cindy, danielle, olessa, all here this morning keeping an eye on this for you. Cindy today is the storm day. But additional snow chances so this storm today is not just the snow were talking about. Very strong winds. Coastal flooding concerns. Could be more Power Outages especially south of boston as we get deeper into this storm. So theres a lot to talk about. Blizzard warning here in southeastern massachusetts. Winds gusting potentially to 65 Miles Per Hour combined with heavy, wet snow. That will create near whiteout conditions later this morning into the afternoon. Outside of that, we have a winter storm warning up until 7 00 tomorrow morning so a good portion of the area west of worcester. Winds not as strong, not as much snow but still Winter Weather advisories for you. Here is the snow right now on the vineyard and nantucket. It looks like we have snow on the cape. Maybe a few flurries at this point. But really not reaching the ground in many areas yet. But it will. You can see our storm a good distance away. The outer most edges of a very large storm just starting to impact the area. If youre thinking about heading out right now through 8 00 this morning, the brunt of the snow is going to stay focused here along the south coast and the 8 00 a. M. , that snow moves in. It moves in fast. And it moves in hard. You can see the darker blues midday. When we get into that time period midday into the early afternoon, were talking about snow falling at a rate 12 inches per hour. Very slippery snowcovered roads. And reduced visibility as well. And this snow is going to stick with us into the evening commute and lighter snow is with us into the overnight as well. Its going to take until really late tonight before it tapers off completely. A widespread 6 to 10inch snowfall. Less outside the worcester area. There may be with those north to northeastly winds spots on cape ann and south of boston that do exceed that 10inch mark. Less as you head down in order nantucket and about 610 mid to outer cape. Already if winds are gusting over 40 Miles Per Hour so that combination of the wind and temperatures this morning going to be dropping the wind chill. It will feel its in the single digit here by this afternoon. So a lot of elements to watch with this storm. Randy and emily. Right now the coast is a big emily the eyeopeners Frank Holland is monitoring conditions in sandwich right now. Frank good morning, guys. Now. Grass. Sandwich. That gives you a good idea of are. Theyre really whipping fast. As fast as 40 Miles Per Hour, even a little fast every down here. If you look over here behind me, its dark but thats the beach over there. Low tide right now but were also expecting astronomically high tides. Possible. We dont think any sea walls should be in jeopardy. Last but not least heavy, wet snow should be on the way later on this morning. All that together is a Severe Weather triple threat. Well keep a close eye on things here at the cape all throughout the morning and bring you the latest. Live here in sandwich, Frank Holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. Randy storm team 5 Danielle Vollmar breaking down concerns up and down the coast. A Coastal Flood Advisory or a coastal Flood Warning. Frank in sandwich is under a coastal Flood Warning expecting moderate flooding. You can see this. Were watching that 11 00 a. M. High tide two hours before, two hours after. There could be some slashover especially north of boston where youre under that Coastal Flood Advisory into the north shore as well as the seacoast of New Hampshire. Down along the south shore though and the cape and nantucket, watching for moderate flooding. There could be some road closures. And flooded basements. Remember the tides are astronomically high, something to be concerned with. One of the reasons why were going to see this. We have really strong winds out there. Cindy already mentioned it. Those winds are pumping this morning. Already wind gusts reported at 57 miles an hour on the vineyard. Were seeing wind gusts at 57 miles an hour in rockport. 56mileperhour winds in fair haven. Even on blue hill, 51mileperhour winds. This just in too. In freetown, mass around route 18 they actually had tree rims all righted down. Were expecting more of that as now to the roads. Olessa good morning, everyone. The roads for now are quiet. If youre heading out the door you should be in good shape at least at this point. Heres route 1 in saugus. Emily were live along cape but first cindy is tracking the timeline on the storm and who sees the worst of it. Cindy nobody is in great shape. Emily okay. Cindy but unlike fridays storm theres a lot of wind with this one and along the coast theyre really going to take a beating. Sandwich. Already. These are gusting over 40 Miles Per Hour. Get stronger as the day wears on. You can actually see here. Take a look at the wind potential gusting over 60 Miles Per Hour along the coast south of boston. Boston on north ward the potential for winds gusting over 40. As you get over the interior, the winds will be gusting over 30 Miles Per Hour. Keep in mind a lot of our tree limbs vulnerable from fridays storm already. So any wind certainly not a good thing. Along the coastline were going to be watching that high tide just before 11 00 a. M. Minor to pockets of moderate coastal flooding likely during that high tide south of boston. But the Coastal Flood Advisory to the north for that high tide. Blizzard warning up through 7 00 this evening. That combination of the wind and the heavy, wet snow that could produce near whiteout conditions south of boston as we get deeper into the morning and certainly this afternoon. Elsewhere, it is a winter storm warning up until about 7 00 tomorrow morning. Here is our storm. Just thinking about 500 miles away from us and typically a storm this far away would not be impacting us, but the outer bands of this very massive large you can see the visibility is down right now on nantucket about a mile. Weve just dropped to under two miles hyannis so the snow is coming. Notice it is just kind of slowly creeping on toward the north so its making its way on the cape right now. That mean the rest of us are in decent shape here. Through about 8 00 this morning, i think the snow primarily is going to stick down here in southeastern massachusetts. Very quickly thereafter, it is spreading up so by 10 00 this morning notice here worcester to boston and areas to the north as well. Intense snow bands. See these darker blue colors hovering the coastline here especially south of boston right through 2 00 this afternoon. This is where we could find snow at a rate 12 inches per hour. The intensity starts to wain by 5 00 p. M. However it is still snowing. By 11 00 tonight it is still snowing. So its really going to take through the overnight hours before this all tapers off. Thats why were talking about a widespread 6 to 10inch snowfall. Where we get those intense bands oceanenhanced could be cape ann down to areas south of boston on to the upper cape locally more than 10 inches of snow. This obviously is going to big problems on the roads. Recommended later today. But lets get you out there dealing with. Olessa so far okay. A live look outside at the expressway at the gas tank. And a little bit of volume starting to pick up. Lets check the rest of your ride as you head south of town problem free on 24, 95 and route 3 from weymouth into praintree. One incident here. From 128 to highland avenue expect a slowdown there. Pike looks great. Route 9 also. As you travel 9 southbound youre in good shape. Theres a disabled car over by 125 in wilmington. Then traffic looks good as you head down toward the leverett connector. Trains and buses also starting the morning on schedule. Randy randy as weve been telling you, the coast is expected to get hit hard during this storm. Emily the eyes Frank Holland is live in sandwich with the conditions there right now. Frank .
