In rahway, new jersey, christine sloan, cbs 2 news. Lyme disease is on the rise in new york city. The disease spread by tick bites is especially bad on staten island. The new york city Health Department says there were 55 confirmed cases in 2014. That jumped to 89 last year. The Health Department says all those cases were the result of victims being bitten by local ticks carrying the disease. Throughout new york, there is number of cases in 2015 was 604. Thats up from 567 in 2014. A bronx neighborhood is coming together doing whatever they can for one of their own. This woman is known by her first name only, jen, and she is a fixture on city island. Neighbors say always friendly, somewhat unkempt and confused and recently homeless. Now homeless and Mental Health outreach teams seem to always miss her because she keeps keeps moving and her physical deteriorating. Now neighbors have been tracking her movements and are asking for help. We care about each other and shes somebody that we see on a daily basis, so i think everybody started to see that she wasnt doing well and became concerned. Reporter here at home Health Department trucks are spraying pesticides in some neighborhoods like this area of flushing, queens where there is a large asian tiger mosquito population, though none has tested positive for zika. To those zikaaffected regions should wait about two months before they try to conceive.
