Gas electric shut off while they search for leaks. People on worth street between hudson and church that this area is going to be cut off largely cut off or partially cut off for several days. Old david wichs was killed two others injured seriously enough to go to the hospital expected to survive. The margin of life and death measured in a few feet and which way to run. Cbs 2s Steve Langford was the first reporter on the scene. He has been talking all day. Steve. Reporter new york the city shake a certain fear of heights involving construction cranes. This catastrophic sight a symbol of the building boom in tribeca thats made a certain apocalyptic vision here come tragically true. This was a disaster waiting to happen. Reporter bruce lives on the block where the crane has loomed over the neighborhood in recent days. What he heard and saw this morning reminds him of a dark day in september 15 years ago. It was the same feeling physically of shaking as 9 11 only far, far worse. I thought the building would collapse. It looks like a movie. Reporter Brian Orourke lives in front of where the crane was planted until it fell from 500 feet up. He was out this morning when he got a call from his wife at home. She called me and said, it fell and i knew what she meant. Reporter residents and workers here felt the crane collapse as much as they saw it. You have heard the boom and then you run to the windows and then you see i see a crane falling on the street. Reporter some present at the scene scrambled to help. We all ran to help. Always try to run to help. Then we saw a man trapped but they wouldnt let us go no farther. Reporter the quaint quiet cobblestone streets of tribeca will echo to the sounds of this tragedy for a long time to come. Live in tribeca, Steve Langford, cbs 2 news. We just in the past few minutes have been working to get even closer and right now, im actually on worth street. Im going to ask my photographer to pan this way. Heres the street where the crane collapsed. You can see it laying down worth and that narrow street middle of pardon that bobcat that just got into the view there. They are [ pause ] removing some of the concreted that broke apart here on the street when the crane collapsed. Over here, maurice, look at this. These two trucks, unfortunately, are blocking some of the view but you can see the treads of the top of the base of the crane. It flipped over from the force of the collapse. And then you can also hopefully make out that black car thats right there underneath the crane arm and it just completely destroyed. There is a lot of work here to be done, maurice. They dont believe they are going to be able to get this street cleared until monday. They are going to have to take this apart piece by piece section by section and then remove each section at a time and as far as the base of that crane, well, they are going to have to basically get another but really i hope that this gives you and our viewers a better sense of the enormity of this and really its incredible. I know people have been saying this all day that more damage wasnt done and more lives werent lost although our thoughts and prayers with that man who died. Thats the latest. Back to you. You can almost feel the weight of this thing crushing down on the street. It really is. There are cars along the street that are just flattened. I know we have been showing that video. This street here actually maurice, um, was closed down because thats where that crane was stationed. And they had cleared out the whole area when they were lowering the boom because of those winds this morning. Well see what happens with the investigation over the next couple of days. And broader concerns about crane safety amid the citys construction boom, cbs 2s dick brennan here now with that and more. Reporter its still not clear why the crane fell but we know it happened as workers were trying to secure the crane by lowering the boom as snow was coming down. When boom was being lowered, wind speeds were about 20 miles per hour. The crane manufacturer requires it be taken down when winds reach 25. Lower than the typical standard for cranes but for standard. So in fact they were in the process of securing the crane. Reporter the crane had just been inspected by the city yesterday morning because an extension was being added to it. 565 feet. So its a very large crane. And it was approved and submitted by an engineer. Reporter there were several other crane accidents over the past year including and ac unit untethered and fell 30 stories leaving several people bruised. The Administration Says its investing 120 million to add 100 new inspectors for a total of 500. We have more and more inspectors who are going to get on top of that. Reporter but the city is seeing a building explosion. In 2009, there was a total of 21 million square feet under construction. By 2015 the number hit 88 million square feet. In addition right now there are 376 mobile cranes in operation and 53 tower cranes. A lot of ground to cover for inspectors. We have had some real serious issues on construction sites that we are taking major steps to change and to address. But thats different from what weve seen here. Reporter different because as the mayor points out, this crane passed inspection as recently as yesterday morning so maurice, they have a lot of digging to figure this whole thing out. They do. [ applause ] reporter fellow officers lined the path from the hospital door to the van taking officer Patrick Espeut home. With his wife he left in a wheelchair but stood up to walk the rest of the way. How are you feeling . Reporter the wound on his nose where he was shot small. The bullet went through his his head. Earlier commissioner bratton was at the hospital. He tweeted these pictures with espeut. He and his fellow officer diara cruz were struck at a Housing Project in the bronx last night. Officer down. Reporter the housing officers were on patrol. Thats when investigators say they were fired at close range by 23yearold malik chavez of the bronx. Police say he and two others were inside to allegedly buy marijuana. According to one of the men chavez announced he was robbing the other two. Then four uniformed officers encountered the man. Police asked chavez and the other man for id. Thats when chavez shot. The the two cops were shot. The woman was hit below the vest. Officers returned fire and miss. Chavez ran into an apartment and said, i shot that blank cop. He asked the occupant to kill him. When he refused, i killed himself. Pat lynch talked about the dangers of the vertical patrol and having rookies do it. Theres a staffing problem. We can keep saying we are going to put Senior Police officers with every newer Police Officer but we dont have that staffing. Reporter as for officer cruz, lynch says she underwent surgery here at Lincoln Hospital and will be okay. He says she will be here for a few more days. No timeline for the release. Outside of Lincoln Hospital in the south bronx, alice gainer, cbs 2 news a video shared on social media leads to a criminal investigation in new jersey.
