Reporter nypd officers outside the boulevard homeless shelter in east harlem today trying to piece together a horrifying crime. How this man, 22yearold Anthony White, killed and nearly decapitated his black a former teacher. I knew both of them. Reporter kenneth knew them and lived down the hall and the things he saw and heard raise serious alarm bells about the security of this shelter and about white himself. Anthony had very bad mental issues. I believe he shouldnt have been here. In the cafeteria he used to come down angry and he would scream out that he is going to kill somebody. No took it serious. He had been bouncing off the wall for weeks. Reporter he also wonders why officials assigned the 62 yearold former teacher to live with Anthony White since white reportedly didnt get along with older people. He had a real attitude against older people. He said he come from an abusive background. Reporter meanwhile, there was tight security at the shelter today. Metal detectors on residents also wanded by hand. It takes to do that with that weapon . Reporter another development a facebook post. Jonah said his dad fell through the cracks of a broken system. Its hard not to hate the man who took my father away from me but ultimately i see my fathers killer as another victim. Had there been Adequate Mental Health infrastructure in place this tragedy wouldnt have happened. The boulevard isnt the only shelter with security issues. This man was transferred there because he had a runin with a resident at a brooklyn shelter. I had got slashed in the face. He cut the one guys face on a wednesday. They let him out of jail on thursday. Friday he cut my face. Reporter Robert Mascali a former Deputy Commissioner in the department of Homeless Services says the nypd should do a security assessment at every shelter and not leave it to the civilians who do it now. Reporter look and see how many cameras, surveillance cameras they should have, where they should be positioned, how many guards, where they should be stationed and also the front door. I tried to bring roberts idea to the commissioner today before he spoke at a John Jay College symposium but an assistant said he was unavailable, his schedule packed. Hopefully he will respond next week. And i need to tell you that just minutes ago, the mayor announced an increase in peace officers and Mental Health workers for all the shelters. Kristine . Some new information now a raccoon that attacked a boy in new jersey has tested positive for rabies. The child was released las night from Hackensack University Medical Center where he was treated for facial injuries. The raccoon attacked the 6 yearold while he was on the way to School Walking with his mother in elmwood park on wednesday. A Good Samaritan helped rescue the boy and killed the animal. That was the he set the bar really for not just the teams he was on but the teams that followed him. Everybody in the community kind of rallied behind that but not only did the community put out their, you know, one heck of an athlete, but one heck of a person, too,. Reporter greg, of course, now lives in carolina and wayne hills actually played a game in North Carolina this year. Greg was there to give the squad a pep talk saying that he played in college at miami, favorite at wayne hills high school. We are hoping he creates a few more fantastic memories in santa clara. I love these stories though in these small communities and the person just rises up and makes a name for himself. It just gives the kids inspiration. You know . Thats the thing. Possibilities. He was there as a ball boy as a child. And he just grew up in that organization with that in that school and it just it has inspired them to they won many championships afterwards. A hoax that had added legitimacy because the call her detailed information about the child including the street where the Childs School was located. These are details gleaned from social media so its going to be a warning to parents. Very unsettling. Thats at 6 00. Also, imagine melting all this snow we have gotten with the touch of a button. When you dont have a regular schedule, you wind up, um, not knowing if its night or day sometimes. Reporter women who struggle to sleep at night are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, which can lead to heart, kidney and eye disease, according to a new study from Harvard School of public health. 46 of women consider themselves insomniacs. Just 36 of men. Something regularly measured at Winthrop Sleep Disorder Center in mineola. Only one in four women who have trouble sleeping even tells her doctor according to the poll. So the problem is likely to be much greater than thought. Reporter these two secretarying in great neck full time mothers and sleep deprived, two secretaries. Asleep because youre trying to put the day to bed. Youre trying to make sure that you have accomplished everything you needed to at the end of the day and then youre also now worrying about tomorrow. Their threeweek crime spree was foiled by an alert witness. Carolyn gusoff reports from commack. Somebody came over, he had the black mask on. Reporter the Woman Working the night shift at this commack gas station spotted a masked man lurking outside so did customers. Inside police say he gestured to a gun indicating a holdup. Then ran off toward a getaway car. Familiar narrative, unusual response. One of the customers follows him. Reporter how brave do you think your customer is . Reporter it was this alert customer who followed the getaway car a short distance then called 911 with a solid description. Suffolk police say it was a break in a dangerous pattern. Arrested, three men and a woman a crew on a month long crime spree. These are people who are obviously desperate, who are brazen, and theyre armed. So the danger cannot be understated. Reporter they are accused in eight gas station and Bank Robberies at times striking twice in the same day. Did they have a gun . Yeah, did have a gun. Reporter Suffolk Police say the uptick in bank and gas station robberies is fueled by heroin and gangs. Accolades today for the alert and quick thinking Good Samaritans. Beautiful man. The last of the four suspects pleaded not guilty today as did the others. 24yearold Robert Digrazia is unemployed and lives with his parents. We are following a developing story in california where police captured one of three inmates who escaped last week. The inmate was arrested in santa ana. The same city where the men made their wild escape from the Orange County jail. Cbs 2s Chris Martinez tells us how he surrendered. Surrendered to authorities friday morning after escaping with two others from a maximum security prison two miles from the jail. Santa ana and stated he wanted to turn himself in. Reporter duongs friend said the inmate jailed on attempted murder charges suddenly showed up at nguyens family business. He came in and he told my wife call the cop he want to turn himself in. For me he is a good person and a good friend. Reporter Law Enforcement are still searching for Jonathan Tieu and jose nayeri in this white van. They escaped after a 5 a. M. Head count last friday. They were on the run for 16 hours before deputies noticed they were missing. Trio may have had help from this english teacher [ non english language ] he attended several of her classes at the jail where she was teaching english as a second language. She said they exchanged letters and developed a relationship. We dont have any information to determine in fact it was romantic but we know that it was much closer much more personal than it should have been. The woman gave the master mind crucial material to hatch a prison break including a google earth image of the jail. The three inmates face escape charges. Chris martinez, cbs 2 news. Authorities offered a 200,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the inmates and at least nine others connected with the three inmates have been arrested over the past few days. The men were ait whatting trials for separate Violent Crimes that carry life sentences. It is a guilty verdict for a sparta, new jersey man for illegally killing three bears on his property. He testified he got his shotgun after he heard his wife scream there was a bear on their deck. This happened in 2014. He said he killed the mother bear because he was afraid and then he killed two cubs. The judge said though that it wasnt selfdefense. But an act of a vigilante. Ailing was ordered to pay 4,300 in fines for a gun charge and for killing a bear out of season. In the battle against the zika virus, scientists hope mosquitos will help kill off the insects spreading the disease. Researchers in brazil are injecting male mosquitos with a gene that makes their offspring die young. These mosquitos are being released into the wild to mate with females and pass on the gene. The zika virus has been linked to birth defects in central and south america and the caribbean. Tremendous trouble on the ground in the northwest following torrential rains. The family called 911 but first efforts at cpr failed showed up arnold reyes brought drugs that go right to the heart that stopped. Max gomez has the story. Reporter mrs. Rogers found new strengths in her battle im amazed how i didnt really feel anything. I feel very little pain. Reporter when the former london teacher was diagnosed nearly two years ago, cancer spread quickly to her bones and caused pain in her arm. Heres the surface of the bone where the nerve endings are. Reporter specialists at britains institute of Cancer Research used high intensity focused ultrasound called hifu to blast cells in moiras bones that were triggering her pain. He is saying what comes from here relieves the pain burning the nerve endings and kills the pain. Reporter moira was the first of nine patients treated with this in a clinical trial. These patients have had all forms. Other treatment and nothing works. Reporter while doctors triggered bone pain instead of the cancer itself, they home to eventually use it as a tool to kill prostate and Breast Cancer cells, they hope to eventually use it. We can try to burn away the cancers, too,. Reporter moira says while she doesnt know what the future holds, she is thankful to live life painfree. Scientists say once they perfect the ultrasound technique they will be able to precisely target tumor cells while sparing nearby healthy tissue. But meanwhile the ability to relieve the excruciating pain of cancer that has spread to the bones will significantly improve the quality of life of many thousands of cancer patients. Dr. Max gomez, cbs 2 news. And dr. Max says the cancers that often spreads to the bone, breast, kidney, lung and other cancers. Working out more may not be enough to shed extra pounds according to a study in a journal. Researchers measuredded the Energy Expenditure and activity levels of more than 300 adults over the course of a week. And the study found most active people hit a plateau and working out more did not necessarily burn more calories. Check this out video from hawaii, monster 25 foot waves on the north shore of oahu. Dozens of surfers were there. Lifeguards made more than 50 rescues. The bay is one of the most famous surfing spots in the world and judging by these pictures you see why. But in terms of precipitation, most of that is staying north. Possibly a few little snow flurries would make their way into some of our northern suburbs but just not a big problem out there.
