How this man, 22yearold Anthony White, killed and nearly decapitated his black a former teacher. I knew both of them. Reporter kenneth knew them and lived down the hall and the things he saw and heard raise serious alarm bells about the security of this shelter and about white himself. Anthony had very bad mental issues. I believe he shouldnt have been here. In the cafeteria he used to come down angry and he would scream out that he is going to kill somebody. No took it serious. He had been bouncing off the wall for weeks. Reporter he also wonders why officials assigned the 62 yearold former teacher to live with Anthony White since white reportedly didnt get along with older people. He had a real attitude against older people. He said he come from an abusive background. Reporter meanwhile, there was tight security at the shelter today. Metal detectors on residents also wanded by hand. It takes to do that with that weapon . Reporter another development a facebook post. Jonah said his dad fell through the cracks of a broken system. Reporter Robert Mascali a former Deputy Commissioner in the department of Homeless Services says the nypd should do a security assessment at every shelter and not leave it to the civilians who do it now. Reporter look and see how many cameras, surveillance cameras they should have, where they should be positioned, how many guards, where they should be stationed and also the front door. I tried to bring roberts idea to the commissioner today before he spoke at a John Jay College symposium but an assistant said he was unavailable, his schedule packed. Just 36 of men. Something regularly measured at Winthrop Sleep Disorder Center in mineola. Only one in four women who have trouble sleeping even tells her doctor according to the poll. Reporter the Woman Working the night shift at this commack gas station spotted a masked man lurking outside so did customers. Inside police say he gestured to a gun indicating a holdup. Then ran off toward a getaway car. Familiar narrative, unusual response. One of the customers follows him. Reporter how brave do you think your customer is . Reporter it was this alert customer who followed the getaway car a short distance then called 911 with a solid description. Suffolk police say it was a break in a dangerous pattern. Arrested, three men and a woman a crew on a month long crime spree. These are people who are obviously desperate, who are brazen, and theyre armed. So the danger cannot be understated. Reporter they are accused in eight gas station and Bank Robberies at times striking twice in the same day. Did they have a gun . Yeah, did have a gun. Surrendered to authorities friday morning after escaping with two others from a maximum security prison two miles from the jail. Santa ana and stated he wanted to turn himself in. Reporter duongs friend said the inmate jailed on attempted murder charges suddenly showed up at nguyens family business. He came in and he told my wife call the cop he want to turn himself in. For me he is a good person and a good friend. Reporter Law Enforcement are still searching for Jonathan Tieu and jose nayeri in this white van. They escaped after a 5 a. M. Head count last friday. They were on the run for 16 hours before deputies noticed they were missing. Trio may have had help from this english teacher [ non english language ] he attended several of her classes at the jail where she was teaching english as a second language. She said they exchanged letters and developed a relationship. We dont have any information to determine in fact it was romantic but we know that it was much closer much more personal than it should have been. Authorities offered a 200,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the inmates and at least nine others connected with the three inmates have been arrested over the past few days. The men were ait whatting trials for separate Violent Crimes that carry life sentences. It is a guilty verdict for a sparta, new jersey man for illegally killing three bears on his property. He testified he got his shotgun after he heard his wife scream there was a bear on their deck. This happened in 2014. He said he killed the mother bear because he was afraid and then he killed two cubs. The judge said though that it wasnt selfdefense. But an act of a vigilante. Ailing was ordered to pay 4,300 in fines for a gun charge and for killing a bear out of season. In the battle against the zika virus, scientists hope mosquitos will help kill off the insects spreading the disease. Researchers in brazil are injecting male mosquitos with a gene that makes their offspring die young. These mosquitos are being released into the wild to mate with females and pass on the gene. Max gomez has the story. Reporter mrs. Rogers found new strengths in her battle im amazed how i didnt really feel anything. I feel very little pain. Reporter when the former london teacher was diagnosed nearly two years ago, cancer spread quickly to her bones and caused pain in her arm. Heres the surface of the bone where the nerve endings are. Reporter specialists at britains institute of Cancer Research used high intensity focused ultrasound called hifu to blast cells in moiras bones that were triggering her pain. He is saying what comes from here relieves the pain burning the nerve endings and kills the pain. Reporter moira was the first of nine patients treated with this in a clinical trial. These patients have had all forms. Other treatment and nothing works. Reporter while doctors triggered bone pain instead of the cancer itself, they home to eventually use it as a tool to kill prostate and Breast Cancer cells, they hope to eventually use it.
