It could lead to blindness, kidney failure and amputation. But now a new device an artificial pancreas is being tested. It could make life better for diabetics. Dr. Max gomez reports. Reporter its a marriage of two technologies that have been around for a while, insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors. The device senses blood sugar and then releases tiny amounts of insulin to keep blood sugar from going too high or too low almost like a real pancreas. I have been drinking a lot of water. I lost a significant amount of weight. I was tired all the time. Reporter that was when katie was just turning 6. Her blood sugar had soared to 9 times normal. So for the next 19 years, she grew up pricking her finger ten times a day to check her sugar and then figure out what to eat, when to eat and how much insulin to inject herself with. Its a hard disease to manage. There are a lot of ups and downs. Only about one in five people with type 1 diabetes achieves recommended glucose levels. Reporter but technology is advanced tremendously. Dr. Kowalski has run 19 marathons thanks to the same technology katie uses a continuous glucose monitor that measures her blood sugar every five minutes without a finger prick. And a small separate insulin pump. I still have to look at my continuous glucose monitor and see where my numbers are. And then decide what insulin to give myself. Reporter but now thanks to Research Funded by the jdrf, katie is going to be one of the first to test the marriage of her two devices into an artificial pancreas one that will both sense blood sugar and deliver just the right amount of insulin automatically. The device will be just as nearly invisible as the two she now uses. My skinny jeans, skirts, dresses, yeah, you really cant tell. Its very flat. Tested it in a controlled setting for five days. Now the Clinical Trial will be three months in the real world. I know from just those five days what a mental freedom it became and how much less stress and anxiety i had in my life because of it. Reporter now, the key to the artificial pancreas is that it has to be failsafe because too much insulin is as dangerous as too little. Early tests show that volunteers blood sugars kept blood sugars for the volunteers within a tight range. We know that means fewer long term complications of diabetes like blindness and kidney failure. So this is a real world test hopefully for about three months and the fda will approve it and it will be widely available. Thank you, dr. Max.
