T os live from the cbs Broadcast Center in new york city. This is cbs 2 news at 11 00. The worst night of my life. Its unbelievable. The tristate area buried in a blizzard. A state of emergency in effect, mass transit shut down. It is really a treacherous, treacherous situation. A seasons worth of snow in just one day. Intense winds, street flooding, even a roof collapse. This is a storm that has a lot of packing a lot of punch. Cars lose control, police and ambulances stuck in the snow and the storm isnt over yet. Good evening, im jake brennan. And im cindy chu. The snow has not stopped for were on track to break a record for the most snow in city history. Mobile 2 is out in times square. One of the few vehicles on the roads right now. New york city is under a travel ban until 7 00 tomorrow morning. Thats also when all Port Authority bridges and tunnels will reopen. Nj transit, long island railroad. Mta buses and aboveground parts of the subway system are shut down and remain shut down. We have a team of reports that have been covering the storm. Well start it all off with lonnie quinn. There was velcro here, i would rip them off. What an amazing storm this has been. And as long as the word has gotten out to everybody and everyone is okay, thats what im most concerned about. After that, from a weather mans point of view, it doesnt get much cooler than this. All these pieces came together. Once again, i keep talking about these storms, it was another one. I dont have an explanation, but it became a huge winter storm. Take a look outside, the snow youre up at elevation at the top of the empire state building. But, on the ground in central park, right now you have 25. 1 inches. The record is 26. 9. You also said a moment ago, we picked up a seasons worth of snow in one storm. A season in new york city typically gives us 26 inches. And were at 25. 1 as of right now. We are the number three biggest snowfall in our history and some of those, like number four goes back to 1888. And for those of you wondering, hey, what about the blizzard of 1996 . That is now number six. Doesnt make the list anymore, can you believe that . And we have been calling the National Weather service saying hey, that figure, 25. 1, was taken three hours ago. Okay. And we have still been catching snow out there. Did we do it . Did we pick up another 1. 8 inches . They will take the next measurement at midnight. And im going to stay. You know, follow me on twitter, on facebook. Ill put it out there. What i want to show you is what were picking up for snowfall. The storm is done for the northwest section of new jersey. Warren county, youre finished. Dutches, it never was your storm. Congratulations, you picked up 0. Nothing. Not a drop of snow. Basically, Orange County youre done as well. Its going to progress. Actually, zoom in tight. I want to show you where we are seeing the type of snow that is still accumulating. Thats the bright white color. The light gray and the darker gray, dont worry about that. Thats a very light snow. Wherever you see the bright white, the ability to put snow into the snow bucket, if you will. Around the nassau, Suffolk County line. Theres a good clip right there. When is it all over and done with . You want to know the last flake . Its going to fall while youre sleeping. Watch our newscast, were on for an hour, go to bed and then get up in the morning, this will all be gone. Youll have a nice looking day. Today was a rough day. It will be much better tomorrow. Your wind gusts are hovering somewhere around 25 miles per hour. But look at babylon, 41mile per hour gust right now. Heres what you will get as you go through your overnight hours. Heres 3 30 earlier. 30 plus for a lot of folks. Then you get into your daytime and they are dropping below the 20mile per hour mark. It will be a calmer day tomorrow, but again, go to sleep the last flake will fall. If i have to put a time on it, i would say 3 00 a. M. And start shoveling right away. Finally, you can shovel once those winds start to back down a bit. You throw it this way, it blows that way. I will be up at 3 00 a. M. , lonnie, thanks. New jersey is dealing with severe flooding as a result of the storm. This entire street was under water. Waist high water pushed up police blocked off the area. Cbs 2s Christine Sloan has more on the flooding fear. She is live in union beach with more. Christine. Reporter thats right, some streets got flooded. We are standing along the bay here in union beach and thankfully, it is calm right now. The winds have eased up. Were not getting the churning water, but take a look at this video we shot earlier this evening. The water from the bay literally rushing over the bulkhead, spilling on to this parking lot. For people who live in this tight knit community, a serious concern because a lot of people here have to deal with super storm sandy. The bay leveled so many homes here. Hundreds of homes eventually had to come down. So we saw a lot of residents coming here and actually parking along the bay. Some with special vehicles and lights so they could alert spill on to the streets and get close to their homes. Keeping an eye on the water so it doesnt flood the houses. We can tell our friends to get their stuff up. We can see the white caps, that its getting better. Thats not good. And we got a lot of creeks and stuff, so the creeks is another thing that backs up. It is a cruel reminder once again of how powerful Mother Nature can be. And of course, youre seeing a lot of snow here in this parking lot. This really wasnt the story here. The story here was the high winds, the water, sometimes when the winds are very high, it sort of keeps the water in and the water spills over. So right now, i think everyone is keeping their fingers crossed, hoping this is the end of it. From what were hearing, the voluntary evacuations were lifted because the 7 30 p. M. High tide did not cause the damage they suspected. This neighborhood are flooded and whats really bad is youll see snow like this on top of water. Its really hard to tell if a street is flooded or if, you know, you can go right through it. Again, folks out here thankful after what they went through with sandy that they did not get the floods in their homes that they feared were live in union beach, new jersey, Christine Sloan, cbs 2 news. Christine, thank you very much. The nypd was out enforcing the travel ban in effect since 2 30 this afternoon. And this video was shot at west 57th. Officers stopped drivers who were violating the ban. The roads are extremely dangerous and drivers should stay off the roads until the ban is lifted tomorrow morning or face possible arrest. And residents on the Upper East Side took advantage of the clear streets. They have been out all night. Including cbs 2s lou young who is there live and has been there for hours and hours. Yeah, in the ten hours we have been here, we have seen it go from city scape to snowstorm to whiteout. A whiteout so intense that it seemed like we were in a small town for hours. You could barely see a block or two and people were walking around. It was very quiet. The sound very muffled. That has now changed. The snow has stopped. The visibility has lifted along the street. We can see from park to river. We can see uptown, downtown, we can see all the way into midtown. The buildings reappeared and the black top has reappeared. There is a warmth, a little bit of a warmer feel to the air. The police are keeping an eye on things. And you see the plows there have very little left to plow. The big problem now is to move these gigantic piles of snow that have stacked up along the sides here and get them out of here with front loaders so they been snowed in. These are our vehicles here and well have to try and get them out in a little bit. One of the interesting things we saw at 9 00 on our sister station 1055 we were live. A guy from the Upper East Side comes over and grabs a shovel and starts helping us dig out our vehicles. He said he just wanted to do it because he was watching tv. Listen, his name is kevin white. Listen. Basically, i mean, youve been on the news all day and giving us insightful information so you arent making errors. Why not help you out as well . Reporter we are back here on the Upper East Side. These guys walking around, what are you doing out in the snow here . Its a very nice night. All right. And you guys are just hanging out, huh . Its rare that the city is like this. Just figured to come out. Its so rare. Take a look down the street, this is like a pedestrian wall earlier, but now its looking more like the avenue again and we have seen cars start to come by once in awhile. Not many. The police, if you look down this way, are keeping a close eye on anybody driving around. It looks like this storm is over here and it feels like the city is coming back to normal, which its a little sad, because it was nice while it was going on. It was a winter wonderland, literally, lou young, cbs 2 news. Thank you very much. Happy digging, getting those vans out of there. Lets head out to westchester right now. Brian is live in mobile 2 in yonkers. How is it looking out there now . Reporter well, the roads are in much better shape than they were earlier, thats for sure. Look at the trouble folks have along the side of the road. All of these cars are completely socked in. With two feet of snow. The plows have also come by and absolutely buried them. Look at these cars right here. This is going to be a very big job to get those unburied tomorrow. It is going to be very, very difficult. Meanwhile, in neighboring mt. Vernon, the snow actually caused a roof collapse. It was a building and an inflatable sports dome, called the sports under dome complex on garden avenue. There are two inflatable sports domes there. One of them completely collapsed today. The other one, they had workers that were almost like mountain climbers up on top of it using ropes and safety harnesses, shoveling off the snow. And jumping up and down on it trying to get the snow to slide down off the inflatable dome. So the second dome wouldnt collapse. The mayor of mt. Vernon, richard thomas, tells us his go out and inspect the roof that did collapse yesterday. Fortunately, no one was injured. There was at least one woman inside when it happened, but she told me she got out safely. And the city wants to know if more could have or should have been done to prevent that dome from collapsing. Meanwhile, back here in the city of yonkers, we are looking at actual black top here. So, the plows have been out and they have been very, very busy, but the travel ban was in effect in the city of yonkers, much like the five burros. No one was on the roads today, has had the desired effect. It allowed the crews to get out and do the plowing and get these roads clear. So, thats it from westchester right now. Brian, back to you in the studio. Thank you. All right, well slick roads made for dangerous driving today. A driver lost control of a car in the wood lawn section of the bronx. Slammed into a couple of parked cars. The driver did get out, but it just looked at the damage and then drove away. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. Now we want to go to Staten Island where some residents say their streets have not been properly plowed since the snow began falling. Dave karlyn has been all over the place, now hes in castleton corners. Dave, how are things looking there . Take a look for yourselves. Staten island, the neighborhood that im driving through right now, very bad. The roads unplowed. What youd expect to see piled up on either side, smack dab in the middle. Now this is castleton corners. We are at mark, and were having a hard time making it through here. Luckily, mobile 2 is very heavy and we are actually navigating fairly well. But, neighbors here not happy. They have reached out to us and on social media, weve seen the hashtag, disappointed. You why people are concerned that they would have this situation for so long today. In eltingville, video of an ambulance having a difficult time making it down the street and then got stuck. Neighbors came out and pushed it. Youll see them trying to get it on the move. I can tell you that eventually they did. Back here in castleton corners, look up that street. Look up actually, craig, the man behind the camera, take a look out this way. Im going to open the window so we can get a view of what it looks like down there. This is something we have seen in previous snowstorms on Staten Island and we do often get people telling us that they feel left out. They feel that they are forgotten. You can certainly see why people here might think that way. We are slip sliding to get out of that neighborhood and well be following up to see what is done for the residents of this neighborhood. In castleton corners, in mobile dave, thank you. The blizzard left behind a heavy blanket of snow. Carolyn is live in west babylon. Carolyn. Reporter it seems as if its beginning to taper off a bit, but it has been quite a day on long island, as you know. Its a day that dumped 2 feet of snow on the island and we have massive snow drifts and plowed piles. Its a day that closed our major roads and brought a high tide that spilled os icy waters into our lowest lying communities. This military vehicle outfitted to navigate frigid flooded streets. Now in the arsenal on the fire department, at work tonight, a high axle vehicle hitting the streets at high tide. We rode along with rescue crews in communities that face the great south bay. With homes destroyed by sandy. Waters coming inches from flooding all over again. We are seeing the water level, we are right at the dock come over the dock. We are also seeing the water in the street coming out of the storm drains, because high tides coming in. Have you ever seen it this high . Weve seen it high, unfortunately, but this is not a good sign to start now. Dozens ready in position at the west babylon fire house. Working 18 hours until midday tomorrow. Until the extent of the high tides makes itself clear. It is coming in pretty fast. Its up in the streets. Its level with the docks, but where its coming out of the drains, its on a flood. How difficult is it to fight a fire if you get called out in conditions like this . It would not be any fun today, thats for sure. You know, obviously any time we spray water on a day like this, its going to turn to ice instantly. Reporter there have also been 25,000 outages on long island, but truly keeping up. They say right now only 500 also two deaths to report, unfortunately. Two people using snow blowers, 94yearold and a 61yearold lost their lives today. Officials say that it was worse than they expected, but that they did prepare for the worst. Reporting live in west babylon long island, carolyn, cbs 2 news. All right, carolyn, thanks very much. The blizzard may have shut down the city, but its not stopping new yorkers. Valerie is live on the Upper West Side with that part of the story. Valerie. Thats right, all evening long, weve seen people trudging through these massive piles of snow just to get across the street. The plows went by here not too long ago and look, you can see the pavement. This puts things in very good shape for the cars when they hit the roads again tomorrow morning. The snow didnt stop people from venturing out on the Upper West Side. Many took advantage of the travel ban to walk and even play in the middle of the jams were nonexistent. No cars meant mostly open roads for both emergency vehicles and snowplows working all night to serve the city. People we spoke with say even without any real plans today, they had to go outside to witness what could be a historic storm. I havent done anything yet. Im a little bit cold. I was home all day. I have to leave. I have to go outside and get fresh air and enjoy the scenery. What do you think of all of this . Thats beauty. You have to have Mother Nature do her work. Thats part of it. We have to embrace that moment. Oh my gosh, its craziness, isnt it . I dont know. We love it because were lucky. We dont have to shovel it. Reporter and we talked about the travel bans all afternoon that kept the cars off the streets. Theres an ambulance coming down the street, probably for some sort of emergency. But that it was the purpose of that travel ban to get the cars off the streets so emergency their way around the city. Also for those plows to be able to make their way down the streets and keep things clear for any kind of emergencies. Reporting live on the Upper West Side, valerie. Well check in now with elise finch. She is live with the conditions there. Hi, elise. Reporter i have to tell you theres just the tiniest bit of snow that is falling out here. We have a little bit of blowing snow and gusty winds at times. Take a look at 7th avenue. It looks a lot different than when we first got here. Still a couple dozen people walking around, not quite as many adds there were earlier and really, i have to tell you it was really lucky that there were people out walking earlier. Emts that had gotten plowed in. They were having a lot difficulties. Lucky for them, Good Samaritans saw how much trouble they were having, helped dig their cars now one of the Good Samaritans talked to us, the other one wouldnt. Take a listen to what she had to say. He was also walking by, i think with his young daughter and he saw me starting to help, sob he asked if he could help. Do you feel like thats what you need to do . Of course, help each other. How long have you been out here shoveling . Or how often . First time, because i started work at 7 00 p. M. First time i clean a little bit. Its tough . Very tough. Now, of course that second gentleman was at work at one of the delis. He was shoveling the walkway. Take a look at those cars. The big dig is what people will have to do if they want to get their cars out tomorrow. You can see that obviously, some folks have really been plowed in. That was the only way we could get main streets cleared. People have quite a jog. But most people we talked to said they really enjoyed the snowstorm. E they were looking forward to the snow and a lot of them said it was wonderful the streets were closed, walk around, talk to their neighbors, so pretty much everyone was pleased with not only the travel ban, but also what it allowed to happen here in their neighborhood. We are live in park slope, cbs 2 news. Thank you. A dangerously high tide tonight at the shore in south jersey. It is sending water spilling into beach side neighborhoods. Cbs 2 is live where there is massive flooding at this hour. David, whats the latest . Cindy, the wind is still very intense here and i want to show you right now, this is a popular street, jfk boulevard under water and despite what governor Chris Cristie said, the mayor says this is worse cold water quickly covered the streets around 8 45 tonight. About an hour after high tide. When is this going to end . Weve had a heck of a day today, but its all in a days work. The mayor spent the day worrying about his residents. He calls this storm full of wind, snow, and water, worse than superstorm sandy. I think its worse than sandy because the weather. Its cold, its snowy, its raining. A fire broke out. No one was inside and the fire was under investigation. The wind never stopped. The roads empty. But we found this storm chaser from york, pennsylvania, braving the brutal winds. We just recently got here. This is a flooding event for us. We have 13 inches of snow. The fluting will cant overnight. We have know, rain, wind, well get through it, though. The snow is still blowing, but the big story is the wind and the water. Although its receding, his big concern is over night, he plans to wake up at 2 00 in the morning because there is one more high tide tomorrow morning at 8 00. So officials are concerned about that reporting live tonight in sea aisle city. Cbs 2 news. David, thank you. Scary, a transit bus slid down a hill, hit a utility pole, one rider was injured, the accident knocked out power to some of the homes. In. Current Power Outages. Reporting more than 8,000 customers without treesty. In the dark. Not many outages, north carolina, just 1656 customers without power. And outages have gone back down to con ed. Gluch you have to admit, thats a very low number considering this storm. Stay with cbs 2 for continuing coverage of the storm. We have live pictures in yonkers, but the roads we will be right back. The common core rollout was a disaster. Parents knew it. Teachers knew it. And now, governor cuomos task force is doing whats right. State tests dont unfairly count against students. And test scores wont be used in teacher evaluations. Less testing. Greater focus on learning. Thats a start, but theres more to do. Lets Work Together to support sensible and fair learning standards beautiful live picture over central park. Nice look with the snow and the lights. Very nice.
