David cohen served as Deputy Director of the cia during the last few years of the obama administration. No National Security adviser right now. Many of the deputies have not been named. If there was some sort of international incident, how equipped is our National Security apparatus as it stands right now to handle that incident . Were a month into this administration. And the apparatus, and the process, to handle, the response to potential crises isnt in place. No National Security adviser. The team that mike flynn left behind in the National Security council is relatively weak. There are not even nominees for most of the key positions in the agencies that support the National Security process. So, i think theres a lot of work to get done by the president and his team to fill out that team and to get the processes established. Well talk about the folks who might be filling those positions. But theres been talk about having the autonomy to put their staff in place. If the president would trust somebody enough to name them as National Security adviser, why wouldnt they be trusted to make their own personnel decisions, too . I think its critically important that the National Security adviser have the authority to put in place people, and to replace some of the people who are in place now, so he or she has a team that he could he or she could trust. And related to that is also this strange organization in the white house now, thats led by steve bannon, that appears to be senior to the National Security council. This Strategic Initiative group. Any National Security adviser want to understand that they can put in place the team they need and how they relate to this steve bannon organization in the white house. David, based on the generals that will being considered to replace michael flynn, and the ambassador himself, what can we glean from this group about President Trumps National Security policy . Well, President Trump seems to have an affinity for generals. So, leaving aside john bolden. The other three individuals hes looking at are senior, retired military officers. He has other senior retired military officers in other key positions in his administration right now. That seems to be what he feels comfortable with. I think a little diversity of viewpoints could be useful. But each of those men, none of whom i know personally. But each of them have a good reputation. Former cia Deputy Director, david cohen. Safety concerns, in part inspired by school shootings, have led 43 of schools to rely on security personnel. Many of them police officers. And black students are threetimes more likely to be arrested than white students. Its become a civil rights issue. Certain kids get rehab. Certain kids get counseling. Certain kids get wraparound services. Other kids get juvenile detenti detention. Ive seen the racial bias since i was a high school student. Reporter getting this right is personal for kansas city superintendent mark badel. Out of a family of eight, he is the only one making it past the eighth grade. He currently oversees callebs school but wasnt on the job at the time of the incident. He believes School Police play a vital role. But the jobs need to be clearly defined. Police officers have become the disciplinarians. That shouldnt be the case. Reporter is it ever okay to handcuff a small child . I have a 5yearold. And i would probably lose my mind if she was to be handcuffed with something that could potentially have been deescalated by trained school personnel. Reporter a child doesnt get handcuffed if the handcuffs arent in the school in the first place. Right . Correct. I think theres a conversation that we need to have in this area. Its something we have to do, considering we cant afford to lose anymore of these kids. We just cant. Reporter callebs family is suing the Kansas City School district for violating his constitutional rights. In court papers the district responded saying his rights were not violated and the handcuffing incident was lawful. This is an issue that School Systems are struggling with around the country. Guys, there is no simple answer for it. I thought your question about, you know, having handcuffs in the school. Thats why we take washable and edible, too. These next random act of kindness kits. In is awesome. Its not just fun to do but a good teachable moment. This is a nice time to take advantage of the day you might have with them, to create the things. We use a simple lunch sack. This is a random act of kindness. We fill them with snacks or treats. Hopefully theyre passing on kindness and they should be grateful for what they have, too. You can use a lot of stuff you have around the house. Hopefully you have it. This looks like something this is fun. And actually, its fun for kids. It includes boiling water. These are snowflakes made from borax. We have taken borax, a deterg t detergent, oldschool. And we added 3 1 2 cups for each cup of boiling water. When you pick a mason jar or vessel, it has a wide mouth. Were making any shape. They can have a blast to use pipe cleaners. We did some se met cal. And a couple of hours, youre going to see the crystals start to form. You leave them overnight. And in the morning, they look like this. Isnt that fun . Great for ornaments in the winter. Its winter break. Lets put them up on the windows. Its so much fun to do. And these are finished. These are about to go in. You need the adult supervision more than the ice painting or anything else. Its a great project. Something that will last. Weve done the same thing with snow fakes here, but its done with puzzle pieces. Now, you have something to do with those. You dont need to put them in the trachsel. Weve spray painted puzzle pieces. And used regular elmers glue, after creating a snowflake shape and glued them together. You can put them in the window or save them for the next holliday season. And you can make them creative. Yeah. Good stuff for throwing away puzzles. If you have one of the kids that says, im bored or i dont know what to do, ive saken a twister spinner. And i made an envelope for every thing thats on here. I say poach them first, leave them in ice water. When youre ready, put them in warm water and youre ready to go. While this is poaching, youre doing something with soy sauce. I make a soy sauce to top this dish. I put some soy sauce in the pan. And it will reduce about halfway. It adds a nice touch to the final dish. Do we get to the smash part . The smash part. I love any dish that has an action verb in the title. I feel like im in a cartoon. You smash that up. You do some smashes. Ill do smashing. Im into it. Its like a dump and stir recipe. Lemon juice, lime juice, and feta. Cheese, citrus and avocado are the main components to an avocado smash. And some ginger, skcallionscall cilantro. This is the final product. Theyre noshing on it. This is tatar tot pie. This is a play how my mom would make shepherds pie growing up. Zucchini, onions and peppers and the tatar tots. You can do it with ground turkey or something. Lamb is usually the shepherds pie. In the pan, we have 80 20 beef. Some worcestershire sauce going over the top. Hungarian paprika. If youre trying to season your beef properly, about a teaspoon of salt per pound of beef. It will get you at the zone. Youre going to cook that down for a few minutes until it looks like youre making tacos. What kind of cheese . Harvarti. I love havarti. It had a sharp note to it. You can do sharp cheddar, mozzarella. Youre going to add Chicken Stock or beef stock. Doesnt matter. Easy weeknight cooking. A little tomato paste. Move that around. When thats done, youre going to take it out of the pan and have a little fat left over. Okay. Heres the part that my mom would excel in, getting the vegetables in. This is a freezer section buy i love. The fire roasted onions and peppers. Nose are in the freezer section. Its a storebought short cut i love. Julienne those. You took it down until its like this. Now, here comes the fun part. Lets start layering, right . The oven at 375 degrees. Get half of the beef in. A nice lower half layer. Then, over that, going to add a little of the cheese. Doesnt have to be havarti. Can you do versions of the layers . I like to use the cheese as spackle between the layers. Meat again. Meat, cheese, meat, cheese. Thats our spackle. Over the top of that, you go with the veggie layer. Right. Then, more cheese. Like a lasagna. Its like a layerup. And you put more cheese over the top. This is called comfort food. Exactly. This is how i grew up. This is why im almost finished. With a shepherds pie, you do mashed potatoes. But i say tatar tots on top. Those are cooked or not cooked . Theyre not cooked.
