Well explain how the state is making money off your personal information. We built our factories here because of a huge natural resource. Not the land. The water. Or power sources. Its the people. American workers. They build worldclass products. And that builds communities. And a better future. For all of us. Because making something in america means so much, to so many. Weathertech. Proudly made in america. Look, i know youre a cow and all. And you may not know what im talking about, but, uh. The yogurt made from your milk, is delicious. Mmmm, yoplait. You may not know it, but the information on your drivers license, if you think about it, its a gold mine. And pennsylvania is apparently cashing in. The nbc10 investigators are finding out how much or how little is being done to protect your privacy. Nbc10 Investigative Reporter mitch blocker went to state leaders for answers. Reporter albert lopez goes out of his way to avoid solicitors. I am trying to protect myself from outside sources that could do me harm. Reporter his address and phone number are unlisted. If a solicitor calls, he has an ad blocker. Somehow he says, since he moved to pennsylvania, solicitors keep finding him. The only place you have given up information is to apply for a drivers license. Thats correct. Apply for a pennsylvania drivers license. Reporter lopez, like so many drivers, had no idea penn dot sold the information on his license and his driving history. He is not the only one. The nbc10 investigators found penn dot sold millions of driver records to more than 32,000 private companies and government agencies. We tracked pennsylvania drivers information to companies in every state in the country. Credit agencies, insurance companies, and car dealerships. Do you know specifically why a car dealer in hawaii needs access to pennsylvania driving records . Again, we have 30,000 as you note. I dont know specifically why each individual business on a particular case would ask for a particular record. Reporter penndot superintendant secretary curt myers told us Companies Sign a contract agreeing to use the driver information for legal reasons, like background checks. Reporter has any of this information been used for identity theft. Not that i am aware of. Reporter has any of it been used to solicit . No. Not that i am aware of. Reporter our investigation found its unlikely penndot would be aware if driver information was being misused. We found the state rarely tracks it once it leaves their control. The one time penndot did check, auditors found problems. Why has there only been one audit completed . Thats a good question. We are in the process of auditing our wholesalers. Reporter the one wholesaler penndot has audited is sterling info systems. The Company Claims its the Largest Company focused entirely on background checks. Penndot found the company had inadequate security, inadequate controls over personal information and was reselling penndot driver records. Their access to information was immediately taken away based upon the based upon the audit. They still to this day do not have access to records. Reporter sterling would not agree to an oncamera interview but in a statement said these types of audits are typical and part of the ordinary course of business, due to the ongoing nature of the audit, sterling cannot comment further at this time. Around our region, not every state sells driver records. Delaware only shares it with Law Enforcement. We consider their information their information, and it shouldnt be spread. Reporter public records in new jersey showed that state did sell driver records to more than 1500 companies. No one from the new Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission would speak with us on camera, citing privacy concerns. There is always a risk whenever information is being exchanged. Reporter the federal trade Commission Says drivers should have a choice. Giving them notice and allowing them to opt out gives them a chance to take themselves out of that information loop. Reporter albert lopez says he wasnt given a choice in pennsylvania. It doesnt belong to whoever runs penndot. That information is mine. Reporter he says he will continue to protect what information he can. And hopes penndot follows his lead. The state should not be doing this unless they can control it. Reporter in the last five years penndot has made more than 157 million selling driver records. To give you an idea of how many records that is, each one costs just 9. Thats more than 17 million records. Within the last few days a handful of lawmakers have written a bill to stop this from continuing. For the investigators, i am mitch blocker, nbc10 news. Three people are dead, including a child. Nbc10s Monique Braxton has been following all the developments that happened here on dekalb street in norristown. Moi n monique, fill us in on the latest. Reporter hi, rosemary. Firefighters tell us two adult passed away here and the one child died at a local hospital. Weve also learned so much more about the moment leading up to it. Were told by one neighbor it was frantic. He was calling for help. I guess he was calling 911. And he was saying that his two daughters were in the building. Reporter that was just before 4 00 this morning. The relationship between the deceased isnt known. According to the fire chief, he tells us six other people were injured and taken to local hospitals, including one child listed in Critical Condition. The fire in the 800block of dekalb quickly grew to two alarms. We asked about working smoke detectors. Were not quite sure if there were any working smoke detectors in the building. First arriving crews did not hear any working smoke detectors, but that will be part of the final investigation. Reporter most of the damage is on the first floor on the side. The cause of this blaze is still under investigation by state police, norristown firefighters and Montgomery Countys District Attorneys Office. Back out here live now, you can see that the investigators are sifting through the rubble on that area where the fire chief believes the fire began. Its so much rubble back there. We have seen them lifting it by shovels and tossing it to the side as they sift through it in an effort, of course, to determine exactly what sparked the blaze that has killed three people. We should also tell you that the American Red Cross has arrived. We have seen them working with three people who live in the adjacent building. Live for now from norristown, Monique Braxton, nbc10 news. Thanks for that, monique. You heard me mention that we are following three fires this morning. The third is in south philadelphia. Well continue to keep you posted as soon as we learn new information on all of them. In other news, we are finding out some new information about the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. Nbc news reports that as many as six assistant coaches at penn state allegedly saw sandusky engage in inappropriate behavior with children dating back to the 1970s. Also there are new revelations stemming from a lawsuit between penn state and the universitys Insurance Company. A court order issued this week says there was an abuse or molestation exclusion in the 1992 to 1999 insurance policies. Between 1992 and 1999 the Insurance Company would be exempt from paying settlements related to any sex abuse claims involving university employees. Penn state would be responsible. We spoke to a legal expert who says the timing of that exemption to penn states insurance policy raises questions. Whats interesting and what the court notes is that, in 1999 forward, this exclusion didnt exist within these policies for penn state. It also coincides with mr. Sandusky leaving the employ of penn state university. Sandusky retired in 1999. I reached out to the Insurance Company covering penn state. They did not want to comment on this. Now, if this lawsuit proceeds to trial, we may learn more about whether that kind of insurance exemption for sex abuse claims is common and why in this case it ended after sandusky retired. Today Community Leaders in wilmington will offer support to young people so they can avoid violence and crime. A new vaccination study shows that kids in pennsylvania could be at risk because of how the state keeps records. A report from a Bipartisan Group of lawmakers found that not enough children are being immunized and that its too easy for families to skip required vaccinations and there are problems with recordkeeping which could slow response in the event of a disease outbreak. The report recommends changes including limiting the amount of time children are allowed in School Without being vaccinated. 9 07 right now on this saturday. It took him time to kind of realize this happens to all of us. My feeling was, hey, man, you know, were all here and we expect you to be the starting quarterback. You need to understand that from your teammates perspective. He knew that. I wasnt telling him anything he didnt know. Carli lloyd said yesterday that her knew has had plenty of time to heal before the summer olympics. She expects to play. Theyre trying to follow up their world cup win with a gold medal. And thats never been done before. I think it is a challenge. I love a challenge. I think its great. I think that the media always brings that up to us and were like, okay, cool, bring it, you know. Its something that hasnt been done, and were up for the challenge. Love to hear that carli lloyd still killing it. I am john clark. Enjoy your weekend. Nbc10 continues our commitment to clear the shelters and find homes for adoptable pets. Joining michelle and me this morning is jacob and amy from the animal care and control team in philadelphia. Thank you for being with us. Thank you for having us. Jacob is so good. How did he come to you . He was an owner surrender. His family lost their home so he had to come to us. He is doing amazing in his foster home. We think he would fit in perfectly with a family maybe in the suburbs who has a big yard. So he can run. He is a lab mix. He loves to fetch and run around outside. Like you said, he is pretty docile. The lab part of him. You can see the lab in him. I dont know if you can tell because hes being so good and sitting. He is a big dog. He is a big boy. 65 pounds or so. He is six years old. So hes past all the crazy puppy antics. He is not a barker. He doesnt chew. He is kind of just a ready to go be your new best friend dog. Good with kids, you think . He lived with children in his former home. His foster mom doesnt have children so were not sure. According to his former family he lived with little kids and did really well. Good. Amy, he is not going to be at your adoption event this weekend so well tell folks how to get in touch in a moment but you have an event going on for other pets. Yes. Its the Petco FoundationNational Adoption weekend. This weekend the theme is mutts. The comic strip. Its so cute. We love it. Adoptable dogs and cats will be at six area petco locations across the city on saturday and sunday from 12 00 to 3 00. Do people need to bring anything to these events when they show up . Its good to bring, if you have other pets at home, if you have a dog, bring the dog so they can meet the potential family member. If you have children, bring the children as well. Other than that, you know, just make sure to bring i. D. And an open mind so you can find the best pet for you. Jacob wont be at the event but people can get in touch with you to give you a call and find out how to adopt him. They can actually follow him on facebook. Its adopt jacob the dog. There are like five people staring at him behind the camera and hes doing great. Michelle, you know we have seen other dogs in here. Theyre out of their normal surroundings, the number is on the screen if you want to give act philly a call to find out more about jacob or follow him on facebook. We have a minute to talk about the weather. If anyone is going out today to this event, bring the umbrellas. Scattered showers across the area. Not a big deal. Such wet weather yesterday but today just scattered showers. Some light rain across the area. Its kind of damp and dreary. A nice day to go to an event like we were just talking about. Get outdoors. Were looking at scattered showers through the afternoon. 64 degrees later this afternoon. Thats about 10 degrees more than where we were yesterday. 50s is where we were yesterday. Tomorrow, 72. Mothers day looking really nice. Well look forward to that and monday as well, that 76. That will do it for us for nbc10 news today.
