Lots of cold air and snow flurries. More on that coming up. A Philadelphia Police officer is recovering this morning from an armed ambush that investigators are calling an assassination attempt. Three bullets hit officer hartnett in the arm, in the hospital in stable condition. The shoot eer fired at pointblk range thursday night, but the officer somehow found strength after the shooting to chase down an wound his attacker. Listen to the radio dispatch call. Shots fired, just off spruce, im bleedi ining heavily. Firing a dozen shots before being chased down and shooting the suspect. A closer look shows the officer pulling up to a stop sign at 60th and spruce streets. Within seconds, a man in a white robe comes up to the car firing his gun. We spoke with a witness in the neighborhood who describes what she saw and heard that night. Boom, boom, boom, and the cop was like, you know, trying his best to block from the hits and stuff, from getting hit. Despite a loss of blood, a broken arm, and some nerve damage, the officer shot the suspect in his backside. The alleged shooter, edward archers, is in Police Custody right now. According to investigators, he said hes loyal to isis and targeted cops because they defend laws contrary to the teaching of the koran. The fbi is looking into whether archer was radicalized. On that note, specifically, the fbi is investigating the suspects recent travels to the middle east. Nbc 10s monique brackton is live in yeadon where the family lives and police gathered evidence. Reporter thats right. Police were here for several hours collecting evidence. We spoke to the attorney painting a picture of a troubled, paranoid young man. He confessed to shooting the officer and said he did so in the name of allah. As local and federal authorities try to find a clear motive in what police call an assassination attempt, detectivings executed search warrants on two properties associated with archer. You see them in full body suits, taking photos and carrying out pictures. The fbi says archer went to egypt in 2013 and saudi arabia in 2011. Theres no known link to terrorism or groups like isis. 2013, when i met him, talked to him in the prison, no indication he had ties to any type of radical islam or muslim or anything like that. Reporter archers mother told the Philadelphia Inquirer that her 30yearold son was hearing voices recently and felt targeted by the police. She said the family had asked him to get help. Archer is known to police as hen neighbors. Hes had prior convictions for simple assault and weapons charges. Coming up in the next half hour, were going to tell you where archer is believed to have gotten the gun he used in the assassination attempt on thursday night. The Philadelphia Police commissioner says theres no piece of equipment that could have saved the officer from this attack. The commissioner calls it the grace of god. The ambush has Law Enforcement in the meantime across the country on high alert saying the incident is a sobering reminder that officers are targets. For now, police in the 18th district where the officer worked are all going out in pairs as a result of the shooting. Personally, im not usually scared, and seems like when you see things on the news like that its far away, and now all the sudden, wait a minute, its close to home. Services are also made available to the officers in that district to help them cope with the stress of the incident. Leaders at philadelphias Muslim Community speak out on officer hartnetts ambush and say no part of the islamic faith supports such an act of senseless violence. The Muslim Community does not believe they necessarily have to feel responsible or apologize for every event committed by some psychopathic nut job extremist.
