Good morning. Im katy zachary. Welcome to nbc 10 news at 11 00 a. M. It was a night for the history books, filled with surprising and emotional moments as Hillary Clinton became the first woman from a Major Political party to be nominated for president of the United States. And we are also looking ahead to day three of the dnc here in philadelphia. Take a live look at the Wells Fargo Center, right now in south philly. The speakers tonight, president barack obama, Vice President joe biden, and we are also expecting to hear from Vice President ial nominee, tim kaine. Just a short time ago, kaine did a walkthrough at the Wells Fargo Center and our cameras were there. He toured the stage where hell address the Democratic National convention tonight. And earlier this morning, he spoke at several delegate breakfasts. His first stop was with florida delegates at the philadelphia marriott downtown. There he emphasized strengthening relationships with allies to make the world safer for all americans. The virginia senator then spoke to his own states delegation. Former new york city mayor Michael Bloomberg will endorse Hillary Clinton in a speech to the delegates tonight. Bloomberg is a former democrat and republican, who most recently turned independent an Senior Adviser says bloomberg will make the case that clinton is the clear choice in the president ial election. And clinton appeared live villa satellite from her home in new york just hours after she became the first woman to win a major Party Nomination for president. She finished with this message to girls and young women across the country. And if there are any little girls out there who stayed up late to watch, let me just say, i may become the first woman president , but one of you is next. Thank you all. I cant wait to join you in philadelphia thank you clinton is scheduled to formally accept the democratic nomination tomorrow night. And she got a boost yesterday from her biggest supporter, her husband. Former president bill clinton was the keynote speaker last night. He focused on his wifes personal and professional stories, starting from the time they met in a Law School Library 45 years ago. The former president said his wife has made it her lifes goal to make things better for people. If you were sitting where im sitting, and you heard what i have heard, at every dinner conversation, every lunch conversation, on every long walk, you would say, this woman has never been satisfied with the status quo, in anything. She always wants to move the ball forward. That is just who she is. Bill clinton also complimented the delegates for nominating his wife earlier in the evening. And i move that Hillary Clinton be selected as the nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the United States. Vermont senator Bernie Sanders did the honors for Hillary Clinton during the roll call of the states yesterday. It was south dakota that actually put clinton over the top, but the dnc gave sanders a final say before he officially ended his bid for the white house. Nbc 10 caught up with former pennsylvania governor, ed rendell, just before the historic nomination. Were all very touched and emotional. I dont have a daughter and im obviously not a woman, but when she goes on ill have tears in miss eyes. Hillary clinton won the nomination with nearly a thousand more delegates than senator sanders. The pennsylvania delegation had some special visitors this morning at their breakfast gathering in center city. A member of Hillary Clintons extended family stopped by. Nbc 10s Monique Braxton is live in center city with more on that stop and some other breakfast going on. Hi, monique. Reporter hey, katy. The breakfast wrapped up a short time ago here outside the doubletree hotel. Right now, you can see a few folks are mingling. Even the Montgomery County chair referenced the latenight start last night and the latemorning start this morning, that is. The theme of the Dnc Convention today is working together. We captured video of hillary for President Campaign buttons when delegates entered. We also noticed supporters of Bernie Sanders, seated front and center. That signals a warm reception and embrace by party loyals. We spoke to former congresswoman were margerie margulies, who is also chelseas motherinlaw, as well as sanders supporters about the partys next move. I think this convention will define the race. And i think were doing very well. We had a rough start, but i think weve gotten back on track. A lot of bernie supporters arent hillarys biggest fans, and it may be difficult to motivate them to get out and participate, but bernies really doing a great job of inspiring them and letting them know this Political Revolution is going to continue. Reporter we asked margulies what she thinks her daughterinlaw, chelsea, will say when she introduces her mother, secretary clinton, tomorrow. Margulies told us, no doubt, its going to be fun. Live in center city, Monique Braxton, nbc 10 news. Well, what we are dealing with now is something kind of unique. And i believe, quite honestly, the worst republican candidate in the modern history of the United States of america. Bernie sanders continues his attack on donald trump. He spoke to supporters from his home state of vermont, as well as New Hampshire and maine, during a delegate breakfast at the wyndham garden hold this morning. He continued to push more unity in the Democratic Party in order to beat trump the in november. Dozens of frustrated bernie supporters walked out of the Convention Last night. Think held at sitin at a tent for journalists. Some scaled a fence in protests. Nbc 10s tim furlong is following another rally this morning. Hes live at the Municipal Services building right near city hall. Tim, hows it going out there so far . Reporter its quiet so far here. This is as close as theyre going to get to Bernie Sanders, probably here today. This is black men for bernie. They have a big concert set up and today theyre going to have a barbecue with occupy dnc and a lot of other groups. They going to bring a lot of people here for a barbecue and at 5 00, theyll host a big photography session. Theyve invited all the delegates to have a big picture taken, so they can get the word out, even though sanders hasnt got the nomination, were still with them. And they keep saying the words, the revolution will continue. If youre in the area of toms payne plaza, they say everyones invited to come down. Youre going to see a lot of Bernie Sanders signage here. You can see a lot of the signs that theyve been passing around. People still saying they want bernie, despite what has happened on the convention floor. They say they want bernie, and even if bernie is telling them to back Hillary Clinton, were hearing a lot of people say, katy, theyre not going to do it. Theyre not going to vote for Hillary Clinton. Theyre probably going to vote for jill stein, third party candidate, at this point. Live in center city, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. Thanks for that update. And nbc 10 has your allaccess pass to everything dnc related here in philadelphia. Our crews are working around the clock to bring you what you need to know about the convention. The free nbc 10 app has full coverage of this historic political event. Our heat wave continues today, though its not quite as hot or humid as it has been heres a live look at the ben franklin parkway in philadelphia. And nbc 10s first alert chief meteorologist glen hurricane schwartz is here with that forecast. Hope you have some good news, glen. It depends on what youre looking for, because if you want a little bit of relief from the extreme heat, youve got that. If you want major relief, thats going to take a while. Weve got up to 80, 97 degrees on monday. It felt like it was well over 100. So compared to that, weve had were typical type of heat for this time of the year, in this part of the country. Its going to be 92 today, 91 tomorrow, and may actually break the heat wave on friday. And if not friday, then on saturday. But today, were pretty much assured of getting to 90 degrees again. To 87 in philadelphia. 89 in dover, already. More much humid in delaware than across the rest of the area. We dont have any showers around, so this may be a day where most of this, if not all of us, stay dry. Its not going to stay that way for the rest of the week, though. We are going to be getting into the low 90s, again, today. Not expecting showers or thunderstorms. It will get a little more humid later on tonight. The p. A. Suburbs, grazing the 90degree mark during the afternoon. Same thing with the lehigh valley. Just barely to 90 degrees. So weve had worse than that. And weve had this week, as well. Much of new jersey near 90 degrees, but the jersey shore, staying in the 80s with the sea breeze. So its 87 now. Weve got temperatures going into the low 90s. Not much wind during the afternoon. Well talk more about when to expect the next round of storms with the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. Well talk to you then, glen. Thanks. Were following some breaking news this morning about the man charged with shooting president ronald reagan. The decision that will essentially make John Hinckley jr. A free man. Well have the details, just ahead. Plus, the new comments from republican president ial candidate, donald trump, this morning, as he prepares to campaign in pennsylvania while the dnc is underway. A federal judge this morning set free the man who tried to kill president ronald reagan. The judge allowed John Hinckley jr. To leave a Mental Health hospital and live fulltime in virgin virginia. For more than a year, hinkley has been allowed to spend more than half of every month after his mothers home. Hinkley is now 61 years old. Doctors have said for years that he is no longer suffering from the Mental Illness they say drove him to try to kill the president. On march 30th of 1981, hinklhin hinckley jr. Opened fire on president reagan. Reagan was seriously wounded. A Police Officer and a secret Service Agent were also hit, as was White House Press scare, james brady, who was left paralyzed for the rest of his life. Hinckley jr. Was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Baltimore prosecutors have dropped all remaining charges against the officers yet to be tried in the death of freddie gray. The move brings the case to an end without a conviction. Gray was critically injured in the back of a police van in april of 2015. A judge had already acquitted three of the six officers charged in the case, including the van driver, a jury deadlocked on charges against a fourth officer. Well, Philadelphia Police did not have to look very far for a teen wanted in connection with a carjacking. The 17yearold appeared at a City Hospital overnight. He had been shot. Police say hes one of three people injured in a latenight shooting at fifth and moore streets. Officers found 36 shell casings from two semiautomatic guns there. Now investigators say the teen is not only wanted for the overnight shooting, but they believe hes behind a brazen carjacking, where an officers daughter was held at gunpoint. Monsignor lynn could soon be out of prison. Monsignor lynn already served three years in prison more child endangerment, but the Pennsylvania Supreme Court says there were problems with his conviction, such as indirect testimony, allowed from other abuse victims. Lynns defense lawyer will ask for lynn to be released this week. Well, police in south jersey are warning residents to be on the lookout for a giant snake. Pallsboro officers were called to East Jefferson street where that snake spotted there was spotted undera porch. Animal control was unable to get there before the snake slithered into a hole in the ground. It is believed the snake is 10 to 12 feet long and weighs about 60 pounds. Officials think its a boa constrictor, which is not poisonous, but can hurt and kill small animals, so residents should be careful when letting their pets and kids outside. Well, the dnc continues here in philadelphia today, donald trump will be makinge g ing a c stop about two hours north of the city. The republican president ial nominee will be in scranton this afternoon. Trump and his running mate mike pence will hold a town hall style forum at lackawanna college. Trump spoke a few minutes ago from his golf course near miami and talked about the dnc email scandal. If i would have used language like they used about religion, about race, about Everything Else that they discuss in those emails, i would have had to run and hide and probably drop out of the race. Last night, donald trump was busy tweeting out comments during former president bill clintons speech of the dnc. Among things he said was this, no matter what bill clinton says and no matter how well he says it, the phoney media will exclaim it to be incredible. Highly overrated. T the number of Police Officers killed by gunfire is up 78 in the first half of this year compared to last year. A new report shows 32 officers were shot to death so far this year, compared to 18 in the same time period last year. The National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund Research Also finds an increase in ambushstyle assaults, like the ones weve seen in dallas and in baton rouge. Well, we continue to see this extremely hot july pip mean, its supposed to be hot in july, but this is getting a little bit out of question here. Delaware, 86 degrees. Weve got temperatures that are getting close to the 90degree mark. Marshalton at 89. Harmony hills, 88. Glasgow, 87. Clay months 87. Odessa at 90 already, but right at the beaches, weve got a little bit of a southeast wind, keeping it more comfortable. Only 80 at dewey beach and Rehoboth Beach right now, where inland, its 89 in millsboro. 89 at selbyville. We dont have anything on radar close by. There are a few showers down by baltimore. Its possible a couple late showers could sneak into central delaware, but most of the area is going to be dry today just plain hot. This is our third heat wave of the month. The first one was three days. The second one was five days. Now were already up to day six and were going all the way into thursday and friday is going to be pretty close. That also may be determined by the thunderstorms. Because there are thunderstorms that are going to be coming back. Not so much today. As we go through this afternoon, maybe an isolated shower in southern sections, but this is to the a real stormy day that we have here. But watch what happens as we go into tomorrow. Theres tomorrow morning and were dry, as we go into the afternoon, at least a few showers start popping up with the heat of the day. And then in the afternoon and evening, we have the chance of some locally heavy rain. And we patch locally heavy rain around. We dont really need this kind of rainfall, but you can see how heavy some of this is, as we go into tomorrow evening. Not necessarily expecting severe weather. Our greatest threat over the next couple of days, thursday and into friday, i think, is going to be mainly localized flooding. And then on friday, there we go, with some more showers, even in the morning hours. So its going to be a fairly wet period, once we get passed today and tonight. Over the next few days, theres today at 92. Tomorrows 91, but we have those thunderstorms around, so that could effect some places, not quite getting to 90. And friday, with more in the way of clouds and showers, maybe even morning showers, were talking about temperatures may not reach the 90degree mark. And through the lehigh valley, looks like its mainly dry during the day tomorrow. So the further south you are, the better chances of thunderstorms, the jersey shore and delaware, and lots of places get into that on friday. And the tenday, there are storms tomorrow and friday, and yeah, the moisture does hang around for the weekend. So we have a mix of clouds and sun, and some more thunderstorms, but as we go into next week, things start to dry out a little bit. And we wont need that dry weather by then. Well take it. Thanks, glen. Part of the process. Coming up, meet some College Students in our area who are truly getting the experience of a lifetime as they get to live history this week at the dnc. And perhaps one day, maybe soon, they, too, can work their way up to this stage. Reporting live at independence mall, im Pamela Osborne, nbc 10 news. Thanks for that, pamela. Former democratic candidate Bernie Sanders is pushing for unity in the party here in philadelphia this morning. This is video from his appearance to the the breakfast for vermont, New Hampshire, and maine delegates. He told the crowd that its essential clinton be elected in november, not donald trump. Sanders was supposed to speak to pennsylvania delegates this morning, but canceled due to a scheduling conflict. Delegates last night heard from a group called mothers of the movement. A group made up of mothers who have lost their children in racially charged incidents. The Group Includes the mothers of trayvon martin, eric garner, sandra bland and others. They spoke about their effort to end gun and policeinvolved violence. But philadelphias police union said they would also like to see speakers on behalf of the officers who have been killed in the line of duty. They feel the dnc should offer widows of slain officers the chance to share their side of the story. Hillary clinton isnt afraid to say that black lives matter. She isnt afraid to sit at a table with grieving mothers and bear the full force of our anguish. As were standing outside, making sure the peoples rights are protected inside, we dont have any say for our fallen heros here in philadelphia or around the country. Police Union President john mcnesby says hes open to speaking about providing a speaker for the convention. He told nbc 10 police and our Community Need to have a genuine conversation insider to unite. I think that tonight showed a little bit of both sides of her. Showed that compassion and love sthaez for people, for children, for all races, for all religions. The foundation of this party is simply about fairness for all. And the movement is for fairness for all. It just shows that were going to be together as one, whether its Trayvon Martins mother or Sandra Blands mother, were all in this together. This is america, all races, all creeds, were in it together. Pennsylvania delegates also say having the mothers speak as a part of the democratic message to let everyone in the country have a voice and be heard. Several groups are meeting at the Pennsylvania Convention center this morning, to discuss issues, including the native American Council and the hispanic caucus. Nbc 10s cydney long sat in on one of the meetings of the black caucus. Cydney, tell us whats happening there right now. It sounds like a lots going on. Reporter katy, good morning. Wrapping up as we speak, its former attorney general eric holder. He has brought the crowd to its feet several times, talks about gun control, as well as the tragedy in newtown. The message here inside the dncs black caucus has been loud and clear, that this is our voice and our vote. They are inspired by hillary. Women here campaigned and stood beside civil rights leader jesse jackson. They say 50 years now removed from the civil rights act, there is still much work to be done on poverty and recent cases of Police Brutality against black men. Our message is reach one, grab one, and bring it into the polls. The democrats win when black women and men vote. Well do anything by all means to make sure Hillary Clinton does not get a seat in the white house. It doesnt matter, any other way, but it shouldnt be her. Reporter as you just heard, not everyone in the black community is standing side by side with hillary or side by side with the black caucus. Theyre still organizing grassroots to revolt against the Democratic Party, not only for this election but also for future elections. We do plan to discuss that concern with leaders here and get you some answers, coming up on nbc 10 news starting at 4 00. Were live at fenls convention center. Sy im sidncydney long, nbc 10. Com and church wednesdays child. You can call the National Adoption center at 1866doadopt. This weeks National Democratic convention in philadelphia has been historic on many levels. And there has also been a lot of talk about the impact of the Millennial Vote in novembers election. Just yesterday, we saw strong support for Hillary Clinton as she received the democratic nomination, matched with unwavering loyalty toward her former opponent, Bernie Sanders. Ed steve la cara joins us now. You are the president and cofounder of the millennial action project, which started about 3 1 2 years ago. Thank you so much, steve, for joining us. First, steve, tell us a little bit about the millennial action project and how you do. Thanks for having me on. The question were trying to answer with the millennial action project is how will this new generation, the millennials, govern america, in an era of polarization and gridlock, it feels like we just cant get things done anymore in our country, at the national level. So we activate millennial policy maker s wit makers, the first of our generation to be elected to congress, to foster bipartisan cooperation. And some of those individuals, were they at the rnc and dynamic . Absolutely. Theyve been at both conventions and weve been at both conventions as well. We have a group in ohio that has been very successful. They enacted online Voter Registration and we have a group here in pennsylvania and we have congressional representatives from both states as well. Help us peel back the layers, so to speak. Despite Hillary Clintons nomination yesterday, you have diehard Bernie Sanders supporters, who are unwavering in their loyalty to him and they refuse to support Hillary Clinton, despite his push for them to support her. Yeah. First of all, i think typically you see the supporters of a candidate take a little bit longer to heal these divisions and wounds from the primaries than the candidate itself, but second, i think there is an underlying narrative that the Clinton Campaign does have to resolve and theyve started to do it during this convention. That is the issue of corruption, perceived or real, and the issue of money in politics. This was one of the key messages of the bernie campaign. He didnt have a super pac when no one said that was possible or he would succeed with that approach, and his average contributions are famously 27, which again, people didnt think was possible. Thats the fervor that represents the bernie movement. I think the clinton still has more work to do, but theyre making progress. So our two nominees, donald trump and Hillary Clinton, have historically not really been favored well in appealing to young people. What do nthey need to do to get that demographic behind them . One of the interesting trends about millennials is that we are increasingly independent. Actually, a majority of millennials today identify with either party. Were, in fact, independents. And the reason for that is because the millennials, a majority of millennials actually do not trust government to solve the problems that we face, less than a third of millennials see Public Service as an appealing career track. So there is a trust and confidence gap here. And so, the Major Political candidates need to speak to a Solutions Orientation to talk about how theyre going to Work Together across party lines. Because the labels for millennials just do not apply. Ideologically, we span the gamut, but were not into these labels today. We only have a little bit more time, but tell us about the event you have at the Comcast Center this afternoon. Absolutely. Well have a big event, at the top of the Comcast Center, featuring a couple of our congressional future caucus members. This has been millennial caucus that weve organized in congress. A hometown congressman, brendan boyle, as well as a congress mab, seth mullton, and were going to talk about the issues facing millennials and the ones that have been talked about in election cycle, as well as agenda ahead. But interestingly, these millennials in congress have changed how business gets done in washington and well speak to that as well. Steve with the millennial action project, thank you so much for joining us. Thank you. Well, the heat wave continues. Temperatures climbing up through the 80s. 87 in philadelphia, 89 in dover, and 84 in allentown. Now, we do have temperatures that are in the 80s, but it feels like its about 88 in philadelphia, but over 100 degrees in dover, delaware, right now. As, so it is pretty impressive the farther south you are. As we look to the shore, were seeing a little bit of the sea breeze, just enough to keep the temperatures down. 81 degrees in atlantic city. 82 in ocean city. 88, cape may courthouse. 89 in mays landing. You can see the difference between the shore areas and just a few miles inland. Now, we are having the longest heat wave of the year that is occurring right now, its the third one this month, started back on friday at 94 degrees. Got up to 97 saturday and again on monday, when it felt like it was well over 100 degrees. Now were talking about 92 yesterday and today and 91 tomorrow. And if we dont end it on friday, we should end it on saturday, because were seeing an increase in showers and thunderstorms and the clouds. This h thats going to help keep the temperature down a little bit. Heres the futurecast as we go through the afternoon. Its generally dry and dry through the evening, overnight hours, tomorrow morning is dry. Increased humidity tomorrow. And then some showers break out by early afternoon. They become locally heavy, as you can see, some of those oranges and reds. Not everybody is getting the storms tomorrow, but there is the potential that some of those could be quite heavy. Not necessarily severe with damaging winds and large hail, but im thinking more of the heavy rain types to produce some localized flooding. And we got more threats coming on thursday night and even into friday morning, with some locally heavy rain. And we hope the same places dont get hit, both of those times. That would, of course, increase the threat of any kind of flooding. The neighborhoods tomorrow are generally going to be seeing showers and thunderstorms, especially farther south. The valleys keeping the showers out. Thats why we do the neighborhood forecasts. Some places have greater threats than others, and we can show that to you here. We do think that you can be some storms at the jersey shore tomorrow, but of course it wont be as hot because of the sea breeze tomorrow. As we go into friday, we can see the temperatures drop a little bit, although we still have the threat of some showers and storms, even the lehigh valley, which would be out of it during the day tomorrow. Again, the jersey shore staying into the 80s. But more showers over the weekend. Well be right back. Cause i am superwoman thats grammy winner alicia keys performing her hit song superwoman, live. To close out the democratic Convention Last night. Alicia keys was one of several celebrities who appeared on stage to back Hillary Clinton, with many taking aim at donald trump.
