Attorney says that in Seth Williams office, justice was for sale. Questions about Seth Williams conduct have now turned into charges. The federal indictment against philadelphias top Law Enforcement official says he committed fraud and interstate bribery. Mr. Williams was willing to compromise his position of public trust in exchange for private financial gain. Reporter the indictment cites Text Messages between williams and several associates who gave him gifts according to the u. S. Attorney those Text Messages show williams accepting and in some cases soliciting trips to punt ta can na, florida, las vegas. It says he accepted a 1997 jaguar and a 7,000 check in exchange the indictment says williams agreed in one case to reduce a sentence. It says in another he pressured a Philadelphia Police officer to help a gift giver bypass airport security. Those actions are limited to mr. Williams and mr. Williams will be held accountable. Reporter williams has already said he wont run for reelection. Today he remained silent. His Communications Director only saying williams is out of the office today spending time with family. In past news conferences hes resisted calls for his resignation. Hes refused to answer direct questions about even the potential of criminal charges. Mr. Williams, are you concerned about any criminal charges that you may face because of your conduct . Youre not going to take any questions . Reporter todays is not in custody. The u. S. Attorney says he doesnt know how long of a sentence hell ask for. We dont indict in case we have a good faith reason to believe that were going to prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt. Yes, sir. Reporter now, this case is being handled by the u. S. Attorney out of new jersey in order to avoid any conflict of interest, but we do know that it will be tried and heard here in philadelphia. The u. S. Attorney did say that he does not believe that the integrity of the District Attorneys Office as a whole has been compromised. He says that he believes the corruption was confined to Seth Williams. For the investigators, im mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. We want to give you a timeline. Williams took office as District Attorney in january of 2010. The feds say he took bribes from july 2010 until july 2015. In january of this year, the philadelphia ethics board issued a recordsetting fine against him. A month later williams anunsed he would not seek reelection. And today an indictment of criminal charges came down. What about reaction to todays indictment . Its pouring in from the citys Legal Community tonight. As for what the indictment means for courts and police in the city, legal experts say its unclear whether any cases williams oversaw could now be appealed. That would depend on a case by case basis. In the short term attorneys we spoke to said williams should resign. It would be very difficult for him to remain in office. These charges are not just gratuities as had been suspected but actually doing favors in exchange for money, essentially allegations of selling his office. The Philadelphia Bar association is demanding Seth Williams resign to maintain the integrity of the justice system. Within the past hour, philadelphias mayor jim kenney responded. At a time when our Citizens Trust in government is at an alltime low its disheartening to see another elected official give the public another reason not the trust us, end quote. This does not mean that Seth Williams has to give up his position. Three local politicians have recently stayed in office after being indicted. Robert menendez from new jersey has been under indictment on corruption charges for nearly two years but he continues to serve the people of new jersey as he awaits trial. Chaka fattah of pennsylvania worked for nearly 11 months and did not step down from his position until he was convicted. And Kathleen Kane stayed in office for a year after her indictment. Two religious groups filed suit against the boyertown School District on behalf of a student and his parents.
