Got a noreaster to start the holiday weekend. Ill tell you when the storm is going to start and the areas hit hardest. Plus, when the temperatures are going to tumble again in my full first alert forecast. Live look right now traffic along interstate 76, not moving quickly there on the left side of your screen. Thousands of drivers trying to get where they need to go. Been there, done that, you know it can often be a crawl, but tonight were learning about a plan to ease the congestion here. First told you about the plan last night at 6 00, penndot studying the possibility of opening the shoulder of i76 during peak times from route 202 in king of prussia to the roosevelt boulevard in philadelphia. George spencer has been reviewing the proposal all day. George, this idea would not be easy to pull off. Not easy at all, there are environmental and engineering challenges, but penndot is looking for a response that it could make relatively quickly, and you could see why as we take a live look at the roadway from sky force 10. Congestion like what youre seeing in these pictures is an almost daily occurrence and right now only the shoulders there along the right and left sides of the roadway, about the only inch of road surface left unused. Driving interstate 76 today we saw areas where shoulder space was plentiful. And other areas seemingly too narrow for anything but a motorcycle. Its a contrast that demonstrates penndots challenges as it considers a plan that might allow drivers to use the shoulders as travel lanes during the expressways notoriously packed rush hours. They need to do something about it, huh . Yeah, definitely need to. Alleviate the traffic thats constantly jammed up. Nothing you can do but turn the radio up. I prefer shoulders, i think its safer to have shoulders. Reporter laurie sees the shoulders as a critical safety cushion. This 14mile stretch of interstate along route 202 and king of prussia and route 1 in city avenue carries 107,000 vehicles on an average day. Serious part of the study. Reporter a serious part of the study, Penndot James Blum says, but not a done deal. The agency needs to figure out whether theres actually enough space, how onramps could be adjusted, and if bridge clearances are sufficient. Then theres the question of where emergency vehicles would go on a roadway with basically no space to expand. The expressway when it was designed and built was shoe horned into an area that is extremely restricted. Reporter back now to live pictures. If you do not drive this regularly, this gives you a sense of what so many drivers deal with on this stretch. You might ask why not expand the actual roadway as we widen back out, you can tell with housing and hills on one side and the river on the other side, there is simply not much space for this interstate to get any wider. Reporting live tonight in sky force 10 above i76, george spencer, nbc 10 news. Now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz.
