Coming up, were going to talk to numerous athletes who are from our area, from the delaware valley, and they are here in rio trying to compete, including kelsey whirl, who will swim the 50meter butterfly 100meter butterfly and she does it in under 50 seconds. The force actually sent debris flying, people inside said it sounded like an explosion. Nbc 10s cydney long is outside the criminal Justice Center where this all happened. Cydney, two people hurt, one with critical injuries. Talk to us about how theyre doing at this moment. Reporter rosemary, both victims were in separate elevators that share the same shaft, when they were hurt earlier this morning. One was a sheriffs deputy. He is in Critical Condition and undergoing surgery for numerous broken bones. The female victim was talking as she was wheeled on a stretcher into the ambulance. Fell down on top of the elevator. It exploded. I have no idea. Reporter rescued from an employee elevator on the first floor, clerk Beverly Smith said she started on the fourth. What did you hear . Explosion. Thats all i can tell you. Reporter thats when falling debris, according to philadelphias deputy fire commissioner, jesse wilson, said came loose. An apparent structural failure of another elevator in a side by side shaft broke through the ceiling and came crumbling down. The debris from that failure fell down this common shaft, and then hit the second elevator. Reporter sheriff joe williams said if not for the woman rescued first, they would not have known right away that Sergeant Paul oh weapons was trapped in the elevator higher up. If she had not got hurt we wouldnt have known he got stuck in the elevator at the 13th floor. Reporter the courthouse was quickly evacuated. Immediately hit the box. And it was hard. And theyre supposed to have security to keep it from stopping. That thing went straight down. Reporter the department of labor and industry will now have to determine the mechanics of what failed. Fire officials did quickly rule out any incident of an explosion. It was a noise of the malfunction of the elevator. It wasnt an explosion. So that part, were sure of. Reporter it will not open again until tomorrow morning with that bank of elevators, and perhaps others that were inspected today off limits. Were told that the female victim, Beverly Smith, broke down in tears in the e. R. Today when she learned that the deputy suffered more injuries than she did. Its all part of a massive investigation involving new york police and the fbi. Members of numerous crime families were among those arrested. Theyre accused of extortion, loan sharking, sports gambling, fraud, firearms trafficking, and arson. Joey skinny morelynno is accused of committing health care fraud. Investigators say he and another man convinced corrupt doctors to bill insurers for unnecessary and excessive prescriptions in exchange for kickbacks. The longtime lawyer for the mob boss declined to comment on the allegations. We were able to arrest 46 members of numerous crime families. Those arrests came one day after the arrest of john gote jr. Were told its not harmful. A Water Quality test is under way. The district is retesting the Drinking Water at 40 schools throughout philadelphia. The project is expected to take about four months. And it will be an independent state lab that will be doing the testing. We turn to a followup investigation at nbc 10. Now considering selling its troubled sewer system. The nbc 10 investigators uncovered its history of problems and how neighbors could be on the hook for fixing them. Thats right. Mitch blocker is following these details and impact. Our initial investigation found that for 20 years, cheltenham township knew their sewer system needed repairs. During that time we found several sewer overflows that actually flowed into creeks flowing down to philadelphia. They were fined hundreds of thousands of dollars because of these spills. Commissioners estimate it would cost between 70 million and 80 million to fix the sewer. One commissioner floated the idea that homeowners could be on the hook for as much as 10,000 to reconnect to that sewer system. At this point, the township is weighing its options and getting more information about how selling that centuryold sewer system could actually save money. I did talk to one commissioner who said that the sale is just one of several options that they are now considering. The commissioner would not say which way they are leaning. More than 23 million worth of cocaine is now off the streets of philadelphia. That is the announcement Pennsylvania Attorney general kathleen cane made today. Authorities arrested six people part of a drug ring that smuggled cocaine from puerto rico and the Dominican Republic to the united states. They said they found more than 500 pounds of cocaine in philly at a warehouse and also in two cars. Its one of the largest drug seizures that theyve made in years. We are targeting these Drug Trafficking organizations who are bringing large amounts of poisons into our streets and distributing onto the streets of philadelphia and the vicinity. The suspects are all behind bars with bail set at 1 million or more. Atlantic city is one step closer to having one of its biggest and most valuable eye sores developed. They received two bids for the sprawling former airport bader field. The cashstrapped city is selling the site to bring in muchneeded money. No word yet on who submitted the bids or what kind every projects have been proposed. Theyll now be evaluated by city leaders. Officials will also make their decision based on which proposal is best for atlantic citys future. Delawares indian tribe is eligible for services. And the experts that we talked to said that its not only possible, but probable that you would have some districts where that would be the case. That there was no classified materials among the emails she sent and received using a personal email account when she was secretary of state. The academy trains Police Recruits from all across the state. To train them here so that if there are mistakes that are made, we can learn from that, and to make it as realistic as possible.
