Federal police have heightened security at all of the countrys borders, issued a wanted notice for that third suspect who they are still trying to identify. An iraqi intelligence official says isis militants targeted brussels because of the recent arrest of the top suspect in the paris terror attacks. The iraqi official tells the Associated Press that isis has been planning terrorist attacks at europe airports and train stations for two months. The european leaders knew about the plans but at the time brussels was not part of the plot. Brussels is the capital city of belgium with a population of 175,000. He worries most about the Impact Todays attacks will have on his children. The second bomb that went off in the metro stop was about a mile away from where i was. When armen got to work in brusselings he says conversations were filled with shock and concern for the victims of this mornings attacks. People have gone around asking okay, is everyone who is normally supposed to be here, here, make sure there is nobody unaccounted for. Sprecher had lived in belgium for 14 years, is an Emergency Room Physician with the medical organization doctors without borders. The haverford township native previouslying worked at cape regional at the jersey shore and spent summers as a life guard in cape may. He, his wife and three children live on the outskirts of brussels. My concern is not so much about being victimized directly but more that this is not a great atmosphere for the kids to grow up in. I know that they will have lots of questions and they will be scared. His children were already nervous following the paris attacks, which prompted a lockdown in brussels. In the months that followed, sprecher and his wife tried to reassure the kids about their safety. They calmed down and life went back to normal. Now that there are actual violent events occurring, explosions in the city, that will to a certain extent undue some of the work weve been doing. Sprecher tells me his job has taken him to other parts of the world where bombings are more common so he says he already had a certain degree of risk tolerance, when it comes to terror. The church of jesus christ of latterday saints confirms three missionaries are in Critical Condition from the bombings at the Brussels Airport. Three students from Quinnipiac University were at the airport the time of the attacks but all of them are safe. And accounted for. A huntsville, alabama woman was ready to board her flight back home from brussels, but she was stopped in her tracks by those deadly explosions. Now to insight about the attacks. Late this afternoon we learned that belgian officials knew that a terror attack was possible, they were bracing for it. Could they have done something to stop it . We know this was a soft target like many others including paris. They knew there was an attack but didnt have details. Its clear that the Security Services in brussels had been overwhelmed for some time. There were reports saying that the number of people they were monitoring was so large it was impossible to stop every attack. Even if you do your best there is no way you can stop every attack. Recently the government in belgium approved expanding but the problem they have is they have a lot of people in the society who are essentially sympathetic to isis or kaek and they cannot monitor them all. You can never stop ever terrorist attack. Weve seen security beefed up across the United States including at the Philadelphia Airport here, train stations, 30th street station. What does this mean for us here at home . In the United States, theres always a risk of terrorism. Whether you are in europe, United States, there is always a risk. I would argue that the situation in europe is in many ways worse than the United States. The reason that is is that there are a lot of people in european societies who fought in the syrian iraq and now returned to europe and to places like brussels and are trained and capable of launching those attacks. By all accounts the number of americans that fought and returned to the United States and launched these attacks like we saw in brussels and the american airport are much smaller. So although there is always a risk of terrorism the risk in europe and in places like paris and brussels is much greater than in philadelphia and elsewhere.
