At issue the suspended work rules that Union Officials believe puts safety at risk for workers and passengers. Nbc 10s jesse gary is live in center city. Explain the suspended work rules. What is this about . Reporter well, i just talked to steve bruno with the brotherhood of locomotive engineers and training and he says septa is in a worse position related to other regional train providers based on the safety waiver in place. The union wants to convince the multiperson federal rail panel today to remove suspended safety rules from the past three years. All of septas train engineers work more than 40 hours a week. Most work six days a week. The waiver results in fatigued workers that can create a scenario similar to the one that led to a fatal metro and north commuter train in new york last year. When you assign the waiver benefits or the waiver changes that septa is taking here to that work they can expend out to 17 to 18 hours, that leaves very little time for meaningful sleep. Reporter what does that mean for somebody riding septa . It could be dangerous. Reporter septa Officials Say the authority will continue to closely monitor data and related information to prevent engineer fatigue as part of the ongoing effort to ensure that safe operation of service. The hearing starts at 10 00 this morning on chester pike down in Delaware County. Im going to tweet out the exact address. It will take about two hours to go through this. And it is a public hearing, so you can come to give your opinion. The panel will make its final decision by may of this year. Live outside of 30th street station, jess sere gary nbc 10 news.
